Lessons Learned Round 3

Written by Big Sexy on April 13 2011

A few Lessons Learned from Round 3:
1. I mightn’t be gay, but I’m loving Big Cox….. and loving the fact I jumped on Big Cox at the start of the season, and if you haven’t jumped on Cox, get on Cox NOW! Now I don’t mean to ram Cox down your throat, but Cox is just that good! (165 & 129 & 121)
2. Confirmed – The Suns are absolute rubbish.
3. Confirmed – Goddard continues to crack the ton without playing well. In the 20mins of his game I saw, BJ kicked into the man-on-the-mark, and then dropped an absolute sitter chest mark…. He had a stinker 112!
4. Don’t you hate it when you trade players out, and they step-up… i.e. Everitt 125, Clark 95, JP Kennedy 109 and Yarran 111… etc. Though, I am confident inconsistency will be a curse with all these players, and those who traded will benefit in the end.
5. Rucks are hard to pick and inconsistent (excluding Sandi & Cox) Warnock 46, McEvoy 72… following tons!
6. Time to consider any A-Grade premiums you have that are playing against the Suns as your captain… Boyd 131, Griffen 118, Higgins 122, Cross 130 etc…
7. Andy Otten doesn’t look like he will be racking up anywahere near the scores we hoped for, and the Sub rule will hurt his scores. He is no longer an automatic ‘starter’.
8. Why did I not notice Nicoski and his price in the pre-season…. much better than Otten, for the just a few extra bucks. … No superstar, but better than Otten and 6th highest points scorer for WC thus far.
9. I said it last week: Don’t forget to take the players who have the Bye off the field…. They won’t play!!!
10. I also said last week: For god’s sake, don’t make your trades on Monday… Wait till teams are out!!!!
11. Lastly: My early call for the year is Cox for 1st Ruck in All Australian team!

Surely you learnt something… saw something, that taught you something?

On a side note:
1. I’m rapt with my trade-in of Ottens…. Nothing under 100, and 129 this week (and awesome form to go with it!… touch-wood, no injuries)

  2. 13. Adelaide’s post-bye form should have everyone looking closely at the form of North Melbourne this week and factoring it into their tipping/multi’s. Now I don’t think anyone seriously thought they would get up over Freo out west but now at least we know it.

    14. 3 rounds of no H2H competition is going to draaaaaaaaaag like a MF.

  3. In round 3 I learnt that I have way to many players that have a bye in round 4. God, Boyd,Libba,Missy and Roo. I have the emergencies to cover the spot in the field but they will not cover the points these guys would normally give me. Looking ahead at round 6 will hurt me even more due to Freo (Broughton, Lower, Sandi and Pavlich) Geelong (Selwood and Stevie J) and Hawthorn (Franklin). I can see a massive coronary coming my way unless I can pull some smart trades without sacrificing my Premiums.

  4. I am still holding on to the faint (decreasing into oblivion) hope that I can have some sort of impact on the overall. I figure if I do well over all then the league wins should take care of themselves.

  5. Things I learnt this week 1) There is one guy in my league I will never beat, 0-5 in 3 years. 2) Boak is good, Bartel is better should have picked the Brownlow winner. 3) Don’t break the golden rule of trading while drunk, even more so when on the cricket trip after drinking for 8 hours.

  6. Loving the fact that I got on Big Cox to take out the Brownlow @$100/1 ($10 e/w) and going to Ride him out throughout the season 😆.

  7. 15. You can call Eddie Maguire with any rumour you like about a football player and he’ll put you to air. Except of course if that player plays for Collingwood.

  8. hey guys, some help would be great,
i wont trade until friday but will these be good ones?
Goddard – Suckling (willl pick up goddard when he moves down a bit)
Bewick – Scott Thompson (think he will gun it) that will leave some cash for future upgrades.’
cheers, (thumbs up and thumbs down great and also feedback!) 🙂

  9. Juddy in exactly the same boat as you mate! Same 5 out this week and have just looked forward to RD6 as well! That is going to be horrible!

What are you thinking of doing? riding it out this week and hope the emergencies step up and score well or you burning two trades to help out?? just not sure. trades are gold but if used well this week could really help your team get ahead or make some ground on others that might sit back and just hope for the best…

  10. Max goddard is a keeper u shouldn’t trade him unless he gets injured, that’s my opinion, as for Thompson he’s in the same boat as embley, both guns but maybe firing early and gonna die down, if you need premium cover you may want to look at Watson, more consitent scoring and having a blinder also fairly unique

  11. I was kind of hoping that I would find the solution from every one in here TSNW!
My initial thought was to trade away but that can be dangerous and I have learnt over previous years that trades are gold. This week I am going to ride it out and hope for the best as I have the Em’s to cover. The same philosiphy will apply in R5 but I will make 2 cash cow trades so as to have $$$ in the kitty to potentially upgrade couple of mid pricers who are out that week (Lower, maybe Stevie J). Bit hard to tell but I do know one thing and that is that the Bye is officially an MF!!!!!

  12. I’ll be focusing on my overall ranking team. However the week to week trading advice will be useful, mostly to make sure we don’t miss any bubble boys. Joel and JRoo will be cheap over the following few weeks as well, good points for discussion.

  13. I’m not at all advocating having more than one team, but . . .
One might consider creating another team specifically for the bye rounds just to have a crack at the weekly prize (premiums chosen from teams that don’t have the bye, playing weaker sides, etc). Hmmm . . .

  14. If I were to bring in a rookie defender this week, what order would you place the following (from 1-4) … Shaun McKernan, Robbie Tarrant, Matthew Watson or Brodie Smith? All four are about to go up in price.

    0

    0
  15. That’s my plan, it makes tough decisions easier by picking one of each 50/50 decision in each team, based on bye/team analysis.

    0

    0
  16. No right answer… but I’d suggest Smith, McKernan, Tarrant then Watson (but I haven’t seen as much of Watson)

    0

    0
  17. I think Matthew Watson’s head may be bigger.
At least biggest head to shoulder width ratio. That mellon is massive!

  18. PA’s Douche of the week goes to Richard Tambling for poking Big Sandilands in the eye, making him go off the ground and getting subbed off in the 3rd quarter (He could of scored 150).

  19. BS is loving that fact he doesn’t have Sandi, and praying he’s under 500k by the second half of the season….. perhaps wishful thinking….. Either way, given evey second opponent has him, I’m happy with any sub 110 scores. Sorry PA.

  20. Well, the bloke that got the highest score for round 3 came from position 130,000 or so. He had crazy selections, like Cox and Nic Nat. Some joke players.

Shows why scores were down across the board.

  21. Hey guys, my dad is making a team that will hopefully win this round which excludes st kilda, bulldogs and brisbane players cause of there bye. Is it a good idea to put Liam Jurrah captain because he is playing suns and he could score monster then i will win the round. Or should I stick with COX!
    thanks guys 🙂

  22. I learnt that Big Sexy considers himself more likely to be gay than not.

    “I mightn’t be gay, but…”

  23. “Blues coach Brett Ratten today flagged some changes to the team that lost to Collingwood by 28 points.

Henderson, tall defender Paul Bower and midfielders Kane Lucas, David Ellard and Brock McLean are all possible inclusions.”

That cant be good news for curnow & duigan…

    0

    0
  24. and what if i wanted to get curnow to cover my mid for the 456 byes shoould i do

    Petrie ==> Smith
    Buckley => Curnow

but then i would hope derricks comes back by round 5 for the westcoast bye or im gunna have a donut

  25. Ok guys and gals,

I still have Rhyce Shaw in my backline (after trading in Curnow and Libretore last week) and although scoring a heathy 78 on the W/E he only averages 64 over his 3 games. I think I will get him out of there and swap for either Jed Adcock or Matt Suckling.

    PROS FOR:
Jed Adcock (108.3 & $373,400) – Possible premium, will play all league H2H games barring injury, plays the witches hats in R7 and R21 (SC W1 of finals). Doesn’t play this weekend so won’t increase further in price till after R5

Matthew Suckling (100.3 & $283,500) – Could be a main link man for the hawks defense this year, is 90K cheaper than Adcock, plays the WH’s in R13 & R24 (SC GF).

    CONS FOR:
Jed Adcock – Injury prone (9 games last year after 15 in 2009). Plays for Brisbane. Has already increased in price by $40,000.

Matthew Suckling – Has a bye during H2H match (R17). Will most likely need another trade to upgrade at end of year, unless he’s still avging 100 by then. Has already increased in price by $60,000.

Feel free to add any further pros or cons to either player and a thumbs up for Adcock or down for Suckling. Cheers.

  26. Trades are gold. That said I would trade Shaw, although I’m not sure which out of those two I’d take. Leaning toward Adcock.

  27. I’ve currently got Simon Buckley sitting on the pine, and his not playing. Last week he was out with a groin injury, but can’t see his name anywhere on the Round 4 injury list. Does anyone know how severe his injury was OR if he is even injured?

  28. 1. There are good rookies and there are bad rookies (Scoring)
    2. Coaches are starting to rest rookies through the sub rule.
    3. Pittard gets easy kicks (Kick ins) So more points for me.
    4. Harris looks to be playing a lot as a small forward.
    5. Jack Darling will be a jet.

    0

  29. I’d bring in Smith. Matty Watson’s job security isn’t too flashy now with Paul Bower fit again. Tarrant looked impressive in his first game, but I’m not sold on him just yet. Shauny Mac has some fierce competition for spots from Walker, Tippett, Maric and Talia to name a few. Brodie Smith scored 80 odd last week, so looks servicable. He was sub for Adelaide’s 1st game though, so be cautious.

    0

  30. Think he was always going to struggle to get games when maxwell came back in. Competing with Keefe, although different players and Leon Davis for spots. May get a couple more games during the year but not enough fOR fantasy coaches IMO.

  31. Yeah still on track at the moment

I am planning on either gray or Yarran out round 7 as well as Darling and trade them into Rioli and a downgrade target maybe Lamb, have made 1 trade to date so have 3 for poor form or early LTI’s the trade i made was in round 2 Hibberd——–> Liberatore

    0

    0
  32. As long as you picked your team for the overall prize and have a trading plan (which you do) then you’re still in the running. Expect to climb the rankings over the next 3 weeks – by then you’ll know whether to persist or just go for a league win. I’m in the top 4,000 but not considering a shot at the overall, simply because my team wasn’t set up for it.

    0

    0
  33. Yeah i’m actually doing ok in leagues, i think it may be due to luck though as i tend to get the opponent when they score low

    0

  34. I’m enjoying that luxury in a few of my DT leagues. Undefeated in 2 or 3 of them, yet placed in the bottom half for overall points. Luck ‘o the draw, buddy boy.

  35. Another con for Adcock would be Drummond returning (whenever that is).
Drummond is a gun and will surely take away from Adcock as they play a similiar roll.

    0

    0
  36. Drummond is only listed as 1 week away on the official AFL injury list. Thanks guys, but hasn’t made my decision any easier. Will wait until Friday teams at 5:00pm and then come back here to see if anyone else has weighed into this debate.

  37. currently have petrie in the forward line.. but if i were to put him in the ruck then downgrade him to z.smith, would that be a good trade?
    forwards are:
n.riewoldt, franklin, pavlich, goodes, knights, krakouer, petrie (darling, matera, richardson)
    rucks:
    sandi, ryder (j.tippert, McCauley)

  38. Any tips on a trade for Otten if his form doesn’t pick up?

I’ve got 140k in cash, but i’m trying to save that to upgrade a rookie to Rioli in a bit

  39. Anyone else hear the rumors that big Sandi is a definite no starter for the dockers this week? They have NM coming back from their bye so no real worries for freo there.

    0

    0
  40. Petrie has only played one game and it was against Collingwood. He scored a reasonable 60 in his 1st game of the year. Give him a chance. If I were to trade anyone out of that line up it would be tippet (assuming it’s Joel) as he is not even playing and is still rookie listed by GC as far as I know.

    0

    0
  41. Michael Coad (wait a week for otten to rise in price and see how Coad goes before making this choice)
Matt Suckling (cost more but I think will have a big year)

If u haven’t already got them then u can’t go past:
    Nick Duigan
    Nick Lower
    Danny Stanley

    0

    0
  42. My “wife” and “son” have teams in this year and it just so happens that they have no premiums from teams with byes in Rds 4 and 6 respectively. The only problem is that I, sorry they, forgot to trade in the good rookies after wk 2 so upgrading may affect my, sorry their, scores!

    0

    0
  43. Have a good look at Pederson as he has been BOG for the twos the past two weeks and scored 112 in Rd 1 against the mighty Eagles. Should get picked this week to allow Petrie to play forward and with McIntosh out indefinately looks like a great MAR option.

    0

    0
  44. Bower will replace Watson but I can’t see Mr Ed losing his spot as they will need the midfield run against the Bombers.

    0

  45. He hurt his groin last week when leaving MM’s office after being told he was dropped trying to get on the phone to Sheeds.

  46. Yeah Tim Gossage (@TimGossage), who works out of Perth, tweeted today:
“Rumour sweeping town .. Sandilands is a definite non-starter against North Melbourne.. Three sources including Dockers insider. True? #afl”
But a little later he tweeted:
“Ryan Crowley says Sandilands will play!! .. I guess the rumour off the mark. #phew”

  47. JT’s there for the F/R DPP with Petrie Bender Boy.
I’m in the same boat mz and have considered trading JT for Z Smith this week to take advantage of his potential imminent price rise. The conclusion I have come up with though is that the cost of a trade and to place so much emphasis on a rookie ruckman with an injury plagued pre-season to cover for byes is too much downside for the potential upside.

    0

    0
  48. Last year there was a similar rumour about Pav circa Rd 6-8 eminating from the same source. IMO it is just some over-exuberant tweeters/bloggers getting their jollies. (PS: I helped it along last year with comments on this site and TS!) What can I say? Sometimes it gets pretty boring in a two team town – especially when only one team’s been successfull.

    0

    0
  49. Yeah but it’s still good having a bloke who kicks in because they play on a fair bit of the time.

    0

    0
  50. So true about the mids pricers- I vs’d this one guy two weeks I a row in diff leagues-rnd 2 scored a massive 2300+ and beat me, rnd 3 barely scraped 2k with help from an inspired Jurrah. My mostly GnR has kept all three of my scores between 2167 and 2196 (with a 2180), wow!

    0

    0
  51. The thing I hate about losing to mid-pricer teams is that guys like Ladson, Sylvia and Danger who did nothing for me last year suddenly start pulling out 100+ scores for the opposition! It’s like they know I’ve dumped them and they want payback!

    0

    0
  52. Two of my best mates are Ricmond supporters and they say Chris Newman is one of their first picked every year, simply because of the fact he kicks to himself and plays on almost 100% of the time. Was strongly considering Newman because of this before last round. I chose not to though. But players that play-on all the time must be made point of and seriously considered

    0

    0
  53. Nice to see you two boys posting on TS today too.
    PA
IMO if you can cover Hibberd for the next two weeks and there’s no obvious CC, I reckon you should keep him as you will probably be trading him back in within the next 6 weeks anyway as a downgrade costing you 2 trades for the same outcome. Walesy reckons he’ll be fit for this week or next at Bendigo and with Myers out you never know.

    0

    0
  54. I’ve already got J.Tipp on the pine doing nothing so I need to make some cash from the bench. Might wait a week and see how Coad and Perdersen go on the w/e B4 trading the Doc out.

    0

    0
  55. I’m hoping Woosh keeps him as a sub ’til circa Rd 8 as on the slow burn he may be a great downgrade target for a M7 keeper the way he’s scoring in half games.

    0

  56. Harsh but fair…. Ok, I used the word “mightn’t”, but I also learnt that Brad looks for any loophole, and obviously is not comfortable with his own sexuality.

Don’t worry Brad it’s not gay if you’re giving.

Before, anyone gets too excited…. Just having a little fun 🙂

  57. If you want to dump Hibberd I’d have a look at Brodie Smith. He played senior footy in the SANFL last year and looks like he might get a bit of time in the midfield this year. Plays his 3rd game this week with a BE of -52.

    0

    0
  58. Yeah i know kick ins dont but simply do to him then recieving the ball back from short kick ins or playing on

    0

    0
  59. I thought that kick-ins didn’t count for Supercoach or for statistical purposes (unless it is a kick they take after they have kicked the ball to themselves and played on from a kickout scenario). Except that CLANGER kicks from kickout are counted for Supercoach – therefore it is easier to lose Supercoach points from taking a kick-in than it is to gain them.

    0

    0
  60. LOL – that hurts, but not quite as much as the more immediate scenario of dumping someone from your team and having them burn you within the same year (never had Everitt, but I bet he averages over 100 for the rest of the season to piss off those who had).
