Marsh Series Week 1 – Match Statistics

Written by on February 26 2020

Let’s just dive straight into it …

Game 1 – STK v HAW

Notable Absentees:

STK: Zak JONES, Dan HANNEBERY, Jimmy WEBSTER, Jarryn GEARY and Dylan ROBERTON

HAW: James SICILY, Jack GUNSTON, Shaun BURGOYNE, Jarman IMPEY and Daniel HOWE

Match Statistics (ranked by $/PPM)

NB: ALL these stats now include Kick-In/Play-On stats, eg Greaves had 4 kick-ins and played on 3 times.

Watchlist

Hard to see Damon GREAVES making it into the 22 with Sicily (and Scrimshaw?) back, but he and CJ are definitely worth keeping an eye on.  Thought Greaves was that good, he can’t be ignored.

Was also great to see the price-discounted Dan BUTLER in the red, white and black for the first time; he attended a few centre bounces (6) too.

Game 2 – WBD v NTH

Notable Absentees:

WBD: Matt SUCKLING, Tim ENGLISH, Tom LIBERATORE, Taylor DURYEA, Aaron NAUGHTON and Josh BRUCE

NTH: Shaun HIGGINS, Jack ZIEBELL, Jared POLEC, Ben BROWN, Aaron HALL and Mason WOOD (who has been training with the DEFs this pre-season!)

Watchlist

A bit like Greaves, I thought Tristan XERRI was that good he has to be given another chance?  Great pressure, excellent efficiency and kicked straight in front of goals.; just the support-act Goldy and the Roos could benefit from week in, week out.  I wasn’t overly impressed with Aiden BONAR, though he did jobs and his numbers stand up.  With Higgins and Ziebell to come back, he may still struggle for a spot, but there is no denying his extra size in the guts could assist the Kangaroos.

As an aside, I thought Schache had a particularly good game as a key link in the Dogs forward-moving chain on multiple occasions.  Great hands and composure suggest he might finally be showing what all the fuss was about  … though still not SC-relevant, this could be great for the Doggies’ Finals chances.

Game 3 – MEL v ADE

Notable Absentees:

MEL: Max GAWN, Angus BRAYSHAW, Bailey FRITSCH, Steven MAY, Marty HORE and Brayden PREUSS

ADE: Brodie SMITH, Paul SEEDSMAN, Tex WALKER, Riley KNIGHT and Darcy FOGARTY

Gawn and Brayshaw are both expected to play in Game 2 for MEL.

Watchlist

While there were no real standouts, McHenry and Butts should get another run out and with Doedee now OUT for Rd1, we may get a decent look at Fischer McASEY in game 2 for the Crows.  Thought Chayce JONES looked very composed and could be a steal at his price.  Ben CROCKER the other one to keep an eye on; not SC-relevant in the past, but looked good on a couple of occasions.

Sparrow and vandenBERG both looked good for MEL, but the latter has terrible injury history and we need to see Brayshaw in the Dees next run out to get a better steer on their likely roles in 2020.

Game 4 – GCS v GEE

Notable Absentees:

GCS: Jarrod WITTS, Brayden FIORINI, Anthony MILES, Pearce HANLEY, Jarrod HARBROW and Charlie BALLARD

GEE: Mitch DUNCAN, Joel SELWOOD, Luke DAHLHAUS, Sam MENEGOLA, Brandan PARFITT, Jack STEVEN and Mark O’CONNOR

Watchlist

Matt ROWELL looked great for three-quarters and Connor BUDARICK also caught the eye.  Budarick was gonna be a loophole for me, but if he does that again in Game 2, he may well get a guernsey for Rd1!

Thought both Close and Kennerley eventually got themselves into the game, but with the number of OUTs for GEE, they’ll be lucky to get a gig when season proper starts.  Narkle was more impressive but am not sure he’ll be consistently producing these sorts of numbers when GEE are at full strength.  He scored 45, 67 and 55 in Finals last year, the last score playing MID.  Personally, think he’s overpriced in 2020 because of this, but if he gets the role, who knows what he could do??

Weller, Atkins and Macpherson on the other hand, were super impressive.  Watch!

Game 5 – BRL v PTA

Notable Absentees:

BRL: Allen CHRISTENSEN, Noah ANSWERTH and Ryan LESTER (almost full-strength)

PTA: Scott LYCETT, Ollie WINES, Robbie GRAY and Willem DREW

Match Statistics (ranked by $/PPM)

Watchlist

The one game I didn’t see so can’t really comment.  Starcevich and Georgiades produced pretty decent numbers for rookies.

Am personally pleased to see Rozee (breakout contender) and Sam MAYES (been waiting for two years for his opportunity) produce decent numbers.  I have always liked Mayes for SC (ave’d 80.3 the last time he was given a run at it at the Lions – 21 games).  He’s struggled with niggles for a year or so, but moved back to SA two years ago, is at the prime age and a top-draft pick, which are all good signs for a decent SC year.  Will be watching both very closely in game 2.

SUMMARY

So that is it for week one.  I have deliberately not commented on all those generating hoohah on social media (eg HyPetracca, PeTrappa etc.).   We should not be changing our starting premos based on Marsh Series numbers; especially after only one week.  But they won’t be ignored.  The focus for now is on potential ‘cash generators’ (both rookies and ‘underpriced’ players).

You can expect the same stats next week and the week after.  But after that, the wheels are off … we will be highlighting ALL the risks & opportunities …

… we’ll be doing Rookie, ‘Underpriced’ and ‘Breakout contenders’ stats by line (ie DEF, MID, RUC and FWD).  That should generate decent discussion as we head into Rd1 proper.  Not long now.

Bring it on!

In the meantime, all thoughts and discussion are welcome.  Any thoughts on layout/ data are most welcome.  There will be an added column at the end of the Marsh Series showing expected cash generation, based purely on the numbers.

    1. He’s not there, as are a lot of other players.

Those players who didn’t perform well enough to at least hold their price have fallen out the bottom.

These stats aren’t designed for ‘keepers’ and their performances. They are produced to help identify the valuable rookies and decent underpriced options.

  2. Given the unknowns of the forward premos this year Connor Rozee is looking very tempting at his price. I imagine he will do better than he did last year, and in any case he levels the same it isn’t too far to upgrade him to a premium if necessary…

    1. Concerned he might be just a little over enthusiastic and be injury prone.
Guess the Marsh will point that out to us.
