Mid-Pricers Review – Round 2

Written by Hot Sauce on April 2 2019

The all-important make-or-break Mid-pricers are here to be analysed with the hope of providing some coaches with the answers they need in the chaotic Round 3 trade action.

Get Them In!
Players your team needs

Despite being a premature decision last week, there are several players you need to bring into your teams immediately, especially if you require corrective trades for either severely under-performing players and/or injured players. Tom Rockliff and Dom Sheed top the list for midfielders to be traded in to correct some initial mistakes. If you don’t have an obvious trade out option, it is a little more difficult to justify but they both are in red hot form and unlikely to fall off too much. If the price required for Rocky and Sheed is a little out of your reach, then it’s fan favourite Tom Liberatore and youngster Jack Bowes that could be the answer you’re looking for. Libba is only slightly behind Rocky and Sheed and substantially cheaper however comes with 34% ownership while Bowes is currently in 0% (only 588 teams) and presents not only great value but an incredible POD. Hugh McCluggage is banging on the door to be included, but I would like to wait another week, despite being set to increase over $20k.

There are plenty of choices down back as well with Daniel Rich tempting us coaches once again and Adam Saad scoring 100+ in consecutive weeks, but it is Blues recruit Nic Newman and reinvigorated Magpie Darcy Moore (forward eligible) who are screaming to be traded in. Newman backed up his impressive round 1 score of 134 with 82 against Port at AAMI Park on the weekend. Moore looks right at home in the Magpies defence and looks set for a solid year where he will make coaches plenty of cash for a future upgrade.
If you missed out on either James Worpel, Lincoln McCarthy and/or Scott Lycett, then find a way to get one or more of them in. Worpel looks to be the pick off the bunch with two excellent games to start the year, while although McCarthy is sure to generate some cash, I am less convinced on his ability to sustain this output. Lycett was huge on the weekend scoring a massive 167 against the Blues in what Port fans and his SC owners will be hoping as a sign of things to come. Depending on your cash flow, any of the three would be great inclusions to your team.

1. Tom Rockliff (Mid; $405,900; and 19.1% ownership)
2. Dom Sheed (Mid; $394,100; and 19.0%)
3. James Worpel (Fwd/Mid; $395,700; and 15.6%)

Pass Mark
If you have them, keep them.

These players may not be setting the world on fire but instead meeting our expectations, justifying their selections prior to round 1.
Down back, popular choices Brodie Smith and Zac Williams have started well and proved their popularity were safe choices. Both players seem to be fitting in seamlessly and building towards a possible monster score in the upcoming weeks.
Last season’s post-bye bolter Wayne Milera is finding plenty of space and the pill amongst a crowded Adelaide line-up. A solid round one performance was backed up with an impressive outing against the Swans and the young dashing half-back doesn’t look like slowing down.
In the midfield there are plenty of noteworthy Mid-pricers to be happy with led by impressive Lions cub Jarrod Berry. The tall run-with Lion is getting his fair share of the ball and using it well, if he could hit the scoreboard as well it will be sure to elevate his game to a must-buy player.
Dylan Shiel, Luke Shuey, Brad Crouch, Tim Taranto, Mitch Wallis, Anthony Miles and Aaron Hall have all proven themselves to be smart choices at this early stage with solid scores with all except Wallis and Miles already cracking the century mark.
Luke Dahlhaus looks as though he has been a Cat for years and seems to be relishing his move away from Whitten Oval with consecutive 100+ games. Exciting Saint Jade Gresham has started extremely well while Jack Billings, despite not playing as well as Gresham, has also started well in 2019.
Players up in Queensland flying under the radar are excitement machines Charlie Cameron, Alex Sexton and Jack Martin. All three have scored 100+ once and are all averaging 98.5, and despite the likely low scoring games they are more than handy POD choices for brave coaches willing to back them in for the remainder of the season.

Chopping Block
If you have them, you face a tough decision.

It’s still a bit early, but there are some definite warning signs coming from young Bomber Andrew McGrath. The team is clearly struggling (massive under-statement) and he is epitomising their play at the moment with uncharacteristic fumbles and skill errors. He isn’t the only Bomber that could be deserving of being traded out with youngsters Kyle Langford (still can’t believe what I was seeing from him on the weekend) and Orazio Fantasia worthy of being dumped from your team.
Others who could see themselves traded out this week or next are big man Sauce Jacobs, Dion Prestia, Dom Tyson, Jasper Pittard, Mark Blicavs and most noticeably Swans young rising star Callum Mills. Granted he has played more down back than most expected due to personnel issues at Sydney, if he doesn’t get a significant run in the middle it is time to let the POD go.

Bite the Bullet
These players need to be traded. Now.

No major injuries this week, but if I had to select a few players that you would have to close to being axed it would have to be Callum Mills due to a lack of midfield opportunity; Michael Hibberd for those hoping he would return to SC significance; and Bomber Kyle Langford – running off the ground not once, but twice is enough for me to rage trade him in a heartbeat.

Let me know your thoughts on the players named above and on any players I may have missed.

  1. I’m biting the bullet with Heeney and bringing Worpel in, allows me to trade Marty Hore to Moore and gives me DPP with Burgess in the forward line.

    Thumb up/down appreciated.

    or comment any other suggestion.
