It’s Round 1, which means you won’t find any surprises in my captaincy picks this week. I’m guessing you’ll be playing it pretty safe with your VC/C choices in the opening round too.
MJ’s Top 5 Captain Candidates
#1. Gary Ablett (Last 5 games against opponent from most recent to least: 161, 67, 152, 165, 125) Let’s face it, if you’re picking him for round 1, (cast your vote on the poll!) you’re bullish on his chances of shaking off the lack of pre-season and coming out like the GAJ of old. You’re probably going to captain him if you’ve got him, or at least use the VC if you still have it available just in case he’s eased in. Oh, did I mention he’s playing against Melbourne?
#2. Scott Pendlebury (119, 108, 108, 132, 159) Scotty is pretty much a lock for VC/C usage every week if you own him. If you have the ability to VC Ablett and C Pendles, I’d advise you do it. It’s tried, it’s tested, it works.
#3. Nat Fyfe (141, 122, 87, 103, 64) The Teenwolf has killed it in his last two outings against Port. He’s also tonned up in his last FOURTEEN matches at Patersons Stadium. Coming off back-to-back 130s in the NAB Challenge, he screams “Captain Me!”
#4. Tom Rockliff (137, 86, 119, 133, 91) You’re probably not going to spend $711k for a player you don’t back for the captaincy. He touched the leather 43 times against the Pies in R21 last year. His last three games at the GABBA read: 168, 158, 175.
#5. Joel Selwood (90, 83, 151, 126, 132) His last two H&A games against the Hawks haven’t been too flash, but he stood up in the Qualifying Final with 151 points and booted three goals. He smashed out 157 points in Round 1 last year against Adelaide. A prime candidate for a Sunday captaincy if there ever was one.Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.
