MJ’s Pre-Season Side

Written by MJ on March 4 2015

For something different, I’ve uploaded my No-Ablett iteration, which will no doubt raise a few eyebrows. Like most of us, my team is changing by the day, but it’s probably containing the majority of the thoughts I’ve encountered this pre-season. There are a few punts in there that I’d love to hand a jersey to come the first bounce of the season, but chances are I’ll cave in and revert to safer options in a month’s time. There’s $53k sitting in the bank.

Biggest locks: Pendlebury, Selwood, Deledio, Martin, Swan.

  1. Really like it mate! Only slight issue is I’d rather spend the money on someone other than Toby Green, but the rest is very quality

  2. Could offer some critique but there’s still a month to go, it will change another hundred times till then. If you’re comfortable with no Ablett and those PODs in the midfield then take a chance. Gotta do something different to get the jump on everyone, right? Biggest worry would be NicNat, Berger and no back-up……..

  3. Must… destroy….. must…. destroy.

Other than the no ablett /rocky it is reasonably hard to fault.

Swan, NicNat, Parker and Danger i guess are your vc punt options before you go with the proven pendles/selwood.

The only name I’m not so sure on is Bennell. Not exactly a 22 game player.

At least with luey he’s maybe a 40% chance of playing most of a season.

  4. Love your forward line and want to be friends with it.
Like the upside of your mids, makes sense not having Ablett if you didn’t double his score each week.
Had that ruck combo then chickened out and replaced NicNat with Goldstein.
Hate every back combination I have seen including my own and and considering leaving the back line blank.

  5. Everyone is being a tad kind MJ. I get that you are a vital cog in the running of this site, but you said “Go on, tear it to pieces. You know you want to.” and practically dared me into it, so here goes.

Jaensch came from no where last year. No history of playing 22 games, or scoring well, but well and truly broke out all the same. Backing it up is an entirely different prospect. New coach (that apparently loves Ricky Henderson) means that he could find himself on the fringe again. If you remove his hot streak at the start of last season, he looks a lot more like what we should expect this year. An average of 83. I’d look elsewhere (I know that will be hard with the mess of defenders that we have this year).

I really rate Parker, but it is hard to expect someone to continually take such big leaps forward. I would think that K.Jack and T.Mitchell should increase there output this year, and you I would expect Parker to plateau. Better value elsewhere.

T.Greene. All of his big scores last year came with Coniglio out, and in a few games Ward or Treloar out. With the addition of Griffin I would think it will be hard for him to maintain the rage and be a worthwhile selection in 2015.

Sell both, buy Ablett and look at getting one of those rookie defenders off the field. The team just looks better with Ablett. I know this is the ‘No Ablett’ iteration, but even the ‘No Ablett’ teams should have Ablett.

Rucks are fine for the time being. You, I and everyone else will be waiting to see if Nic Nat shows up at all in the preseason.

Agreed with HH on Bennell. You can’t be expecting 22 games, 16 at best every year, and he shares R12 bye with a few other gun forwards that should be in consideration. Spend that 50k in your kitty on turning him into Goddard.

You don’t have Jesse Hogan in your team. I normally don’t focus too much on rookies, but he is a must have. Clearly best 22 unlike Krak, Lambert, Steele, D.McKenzie, Saad, Viojo Rainbow, H.Goddard and Dick. He is a rookie that should be in every team.

Love what you do, but any team without Ablett, and only clear best 22 rookie, and with 3 ‘premiums’ that broke out last year, needs some more work.

  6. Good way to gain ideas, thanks for sharing. I currently have Goldy/NicNat combo in my ruck with a rookie sitting on the pine..am I putting too much $$$ into Ruck? Thumbs down says I am and I should change it up.

  7. It’s a bloody good side MJ. Shows what can still be done without the great GAJ – but I still can’t leave him out.
Any thoughts on including both Jaensch and Brodie Smith? Both playing in the same part of the ground, it’s hard to see how they can both be consistently high scorers.

  8. Way too many same team players in each line in my opinion
2 carlton rookie defenders both won’t get games
    2 adelaide premos in defence
    2 saints defenders
    3 Richmond Fwds
    And unreliable ruck combo

  9. A lot of risky selections….
I don’t see jaensch scoring aswell this year with Henderson back
Dangerfield is proven to start bad average of like 90/ contract negotiation weighing over his head
Leuy and Bennell miss games a lot
And your 2 forward rookies both have to be exacted off the rookie list
Maybe change one for Jesse hogan
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Ablett dosnt get up for Rd 1

  10. Is Hibberd likely to one of the infamous 34 Bombres (former and current) who is likely to miss games?

  11. HH – I just read that Savage and Roberton have also done hammies (although they are saying they are only 3 – 4 week injuries).

That’s a pity because I really like Savage’s role on the weekend – and he was firming for my SC defence.

With Webster also out for an extended period of time, it will be interesting to see how they use Geary?

Also, does these further injuries (along with Billings, Markworth etc already being injured) get McKenzie into that half back rebounding role – or do they go taller with say Goddard?

Lots of questions at the saints currently – but it is looking a little more promising for a couple of backline rookies being ready for round one!!

  12. One major thing for mine, would you not be better served turning Bennell into a better defender? There seems to be some better forward rookies than defenders at the moment.

I’ve also got 5 premo/ high-mid priced forwards, but 2 starting rookies in defence and 3 in the guts. I’m happy with there being more mid rookies provided a few of them really standout, but no sure about defenders.
