MJ’s Team Analysis – Halfway Point

Written by MJ on June 17 2013

Ever wanted a chance to get a closer look at a top 10 side?
Motts has asked me to give you the chance, and I was more than happy to oblige!

Team Name: Such Is Life
Currently sitting in 9th place, just 201 points away from the overall leader.

Progress (Halfway)

This is how the team lined up for R1, after weeks of meticulous planning:

2013 Starting Team

Biggest regrets:
– Starting with Varcoe & Karnezis and overlooking J. J. Kennedy.
– Taking a risk with Luke Shuey. Next year I will not mess around in the midfield, only starting with players proven to average 115+
– Starting with Franklin (although, I would never have foreseen such a drop off in form)

This is how it stands at the conclusion of R12, before any trades this week:
Current Team (Halfway)

Trade History & Analysis:

Trades History (Halfway)

Note: Used maximum trades every week from R3, leaving 8 in the bank at the end of R12.

Best trades: R6
Hutchins ($201k) > Ellis ($237k)
Gibbs ($486k) > Shaw ($484k)
Round 6 has so far been my season defining week. People will remember it as the week Gibbs succumbed to hamstring tightness and both Goodes and Fyfe were handed out 2 weeks suspensions, leaving us all in chaos. Instead of trading in Vlastuin, who had played just the one game at the time, I decided to take a punt and grab Ellis instead, who’d just come off a 134 against Fremantle after 4 straight games with the vest. My thought process was to use Ellis as a cash cow as his BE was negative, expecting some solid 70-80 scores, whilst also getting another look at Vlastuin before spending 160k on him. Instead Ellis has gone: 82, 103, 149 and 127, turning into a likely keeper in D6!
In the suspicion that Gibbs would be out for more than 1 week, I sideways traded him to Shaw to gain some ground on those who decided to keep him. As it turned out, Gibbs missed three games, with Shaw scoring 125 & 98 in his absence before missing a week himself. Nevertheless, he’s averaged 120.6 since traded in. I later brought Bryce back into the side in R10, receiving scores of 93, 119 and 132.

Bye Planning:
When trading in premiums throughout the season, I made sure I was not loading up one position with too many premiums sharing the same bye, resulting in a bypassing of Jobe Watson in R9 as I already had four midfield premiums with the R13 bye.
Another key tactic was to trade out the R11 rookies first, saving the R12 and R13 bye rookies to trade around their bye. As a result, I’d already cut Heath, Pittard, Stevenson, Wines, Neade and Stevens before R11 arrived.
I devised a trade plan that would have me trading out 9 non-keepers (including Shuey) in the three bye weeks in order to attain premiums who had already had their bye, keeping the usual upgrade-downgrade pattern. This leaves me with O’Meara, Macaffer and Dwyer to trade out this week. Two solid scores of 2124 & 2228 in the byes has been a nice reward for so many hours planning.

Future Trade Plans:
According to my plan, the following moves were on the cards for R13:

Dwyer > T.Mitchell
O’Meara > J.Selwood
Macaffer > J. P. Kennedy

I had targeted Selwood and JPK as likely inclusions for my last two midfield positions, but may have to reassess due to the concern I face not owning Jobe Watson for the 2nd half of the season. He looms as a must-have if I’m to be any chance for the $50k with 8 scores of over 120 in just 12 games.

For the run home, I plan on grabbing one more ruck or forward premium, to have one excess premium covering the midfield, rucks and forwards through DPP flexibility. This should allow me to cover any short-term injuries without playing rookies on the ground or burning sideways trades.

Well, there you have it. How do you think I’ll fare in the 2nd half of the year? Am I going to run out of trades with only 5 left after this week? Feel free to offer up an analysis of your team as well, including best trades and biggest regrets.

  1. Ballsy move trading out Gibbs and then bringing him back in again, MJ. I traded him out but am too scared to trade him back in. Well done so far and good luck for the rest of the season, Bro.

  2. Great stuff, MJ!

Its amazing how similar it is to mine. Shows that there is such a fine line between being just average and being in the Top 10. Its all about timing and a few players here and there.

  3. Liam McBean might be some good foreshadowing on your behalf also… They showed highlights of a Coburg game during the half time break of the WAFL one afternoon and he looked bloody good.

Might be good for a game late in the season if they finally work out that Vickery is a lost cause and Ivan needs a rest for a week.

  4. Great work, very consistent and great trades made throughout good luck with the 50k!
Also I see you traded out B.Crouch I was thinking of doing the same this week but was unsure about it…..seeing how you have done it makes my decision much easier!

  5. Gr8 stuff, MJ.

Thanks for the insight to how the class of the Supercoach competition goes about it! I’m looking forward to the “HUGE” challenge of taking you on in LoEC1 in R15.

  6. Bloody cracking team MJ, really well planned out and executed.

Only 2 real worries I see are the obvious lack of Jobe and the lack of Hanley in the back lines. Lions hit an easy streak of games soon and Hanley traditionally score much more against the weaker teams (+31.5%). Something to mull over anyway.

Only a couple whiskers behind you myself (181 points), so best of luck for the rest of the year mate, not too much though 😉

  8. Amazing to ready MJ, Brilliant work!

Now next week, who should I be trading out for another premium?

    T/U – Goodes (ave – 91.11)
    T/D Vlastuin (ave – 90.14)

    Thanks

  9. What a bloody ripper side!!

Trading Gibbs out in the first week of his injury and getting him back in at his cheapest price was a masterstroke!

Finding Ellis at under 300k deserves a mention as well.

    Good luck!

  11. Very impressive MJ. I feel there is one major distinction in this game for players going for the overall Vs a league win, as I’ve only be focused on my cash league win, stingey with trades to ensure I have quite a to few to carry into finals.

I’m thinking next year I’ll have a separate team and have a crack at the overall as i can now see if you want a crack at the overall “trade like a bastard early!”.

However, I’m not certain…. but I think if you have a real crack at the overall it will be hard to save enough trades to be competitive in finals, but I guess that depends on playing-rookies and guns getting rested.

  12. When I saw your team I was like how the *%#% do you have an almost premium as an emergency in your defence! Great trades in round 6 MJ. I did the same and I brought in Ellis but I also downgraded to vlausin without making a side trade. This is my first time playing and everyone at work keeps telling me that you need to conserve trades for the finals. Do you think having so little trades coming into finals is a good move providing people don’t get injured or Geelong resting its players?

  13. love the insight MJ… cheers for that mate. Gibbs in/out had never crossed my mind… and I pulled the trigger on Hartlett/O’meara/Birchall/Dwyer/Mcaffer way too early it would seem… hope you hold together without injury mate and get the chance to trade in those key 2/3 blokes that get you late monster scores!

  14. Great work MJ, really impressive side.

Really like your trades this week, only 5 left is a bugger but anyone who’s in the running for the 50k is gonna need a little luck. Hope you can avoid the injuries.

Unfortunately i’m the Frosty ranked 15201st, not the one who’s 6th.

  15. Great work mate. Excellent team!

My team is not even close to being in your league but a group of my mates take our super coach pretty serious as we have been playing for money for the last 5 years.

Was just wondering if u have been taking advantage of the emergency and captain loopholes each week. Personally I haven’t but a couple of the other boys have and was just wondering how far behind the 8 ball this has put me not getting involved.

Wish u all the best for the 50k!

  16. Nice work MJ. I had a look your team last night predicted you’d make those same trades this week but with Watson instead of JPK. Good luck mate! It’s an honour to have lost only game in the SCT cash league – to you! 😀

  17. What i find fascinating and inspiring for next year is that you don’t need to start off in the top 1000 week one. You were a fair way back there MJ!!

  18. Great write-up MJ, thankyou for sharing. I have saved this as a blueprint for next year, it is a great learning tool. Your round 6 move was brilliant and very gutsy bringing Gibbs back in – well done! Hoping you collect the cash.

  19. Aside from your impressive rise up the ranks, your heads up on Ellis at $230,000 was the reason I got him in and have reaped the benefits. On ya! Hope you can go all the way mate

  20. Nice work MJ,
Awesome looking team and it gives me confidence for the 2nd half of the year as it shows I’m on the right track for a PB this year.. I also traded out Gibbs and got him back in and jumped on the Ellis train for some quick cash now he looks like being my D6. I dumped Dusty early doors (itchy finger with 30 trades) now contemplating bringing him back but Buddy does look like a winner at that price (3rd time I’ve changed my mind on that today already). I only need 1 more mid premium and 1 more forward premium for a full side with 10 trades left. Now I know its the golden rule BUT would love your advice would you possibly consider even for a minute Hartlett to Hanley or Shaw as a dreaded sideways??? Cheers mate and heres hoping a SCTer can claim the overall prize in 2013.

  21. Can’t wait to see how your round 13 team looks. With only 8 trades left ( I’ve got 10) so will wait with baited breath to see what your next move is.

  22. My side and your side were incredibly similiar at Round 1!!!!

Congratulations on some wise trades, mine have been ordinary and cost me big time this year.

I have finshed in the Top 1% for the past 5 years and this year will be my worst to date. I do feel disadvantage to others tho, as playing sport on weekends kills my chances to check the subs/late changes and change my team if necessary within half an hour before the game starts (as im usually getting ready or out on the field during this time!)

My one suggestion to supercoach will be to abolish this ridiculous flexibility with rolling lockouts for every week and game. It basically means you have to have access to ur team and the necessary time to change it to have a chance of winning. Unrealistic for many im afraid.

Granted some dumb trades have hurt me this year, but the amount of points others have cashed in on due to the non existent lock-outs this year is crap.

    Rant over, well done MJ.

  23. took lester over ellis been spewing since. Getting ellis this week hurts so much but at least i know he can be consistent

    never got the vlas train

got rid of houli rd3 – been killing it since

theyre the 3 decisions that have hurt – along with some bad ruck choices sitting 1100th
