Motts' Dilemma

Written by Motts on March 20 2010

I’ve been going round and round with this one. Do I downgrade a premium ruck (in this case Aaron Sandilands) to David Hille to free up $220k which can then be used to upgrade my 4th midfield spot from a mid-priced midfielder to a premium (in this case Jack Ziebell to Jobe Watson) or do I leave it as is?

Looking at it on averages:
Sandy: 101.4
Hille: 73.25 (but we know he’s capable of much more)
Difference: -28

Ziebell: 60.4 (but I’m expecting this to go up this year)
Watson: 101.86
Difference: 41

Overall gain based on last year’s average: 13 pts.

Am I taking too much of a risk by drafting in Hille and his questionable knees for the sake of a mere ~13 points a week?

  1. Yes. I reckon the Sandi points are easy money and Ziebell will close that gap on Jobe rather quickly. Plus with a healthy and happy McVeigh and a few new runners Jobe is more liekly to go down a tiny bit not up

    1. ok so lets say its not Jobe. Lets say using cash in the bank its Deledio, Cross, Priddis or Boyd. Does that change things?

  2. Prepare yourself for a weekly ulcer if you’re going to take on Hille. That’s a mighty big body to carry around on anything that remotely resembles a dodgy knee. Having said that, J-Mac proved that a big man can recover adequately from knee recon. to post decent scores. I like Hille and would be happy to see him do well but not at the expense of my stress levels.

  3. How about this food for thought Mottsy,
Mumford, Seaby, Roughead, (Lobbe / Fitzpatrick / whoever)

Two lateral thinking experts like ourselves always consider the less than obvious genious choices. Question is whether this is one of those…..

Grant Thomas always had a thought that rucks were relatively useless…..Should we adopt the thomas theory and choose two mid scoring rucks who are pretty safe for 22 games and use the extra 500 on other areas where scores that are higher more consistently are regularly achieved???

    1. I like all off-the-wall theories, SS. The value gain on Mumford & Seaby will be significant. But will it be more than on a midfield rook like Banner or Barlow or even Trengove? Probably not. This gives you an insight as to where my mind is currently at.

  4. I’ve got a dilemma, its this partial lockout during game 1. See you can lock in your blues and tiges players for the night and the following day you are allow to mix around with your lineup expect for your blues and tiges players. Anyway my dilemma is do you put in a fake lineup (expect 4 your blues and tiges players) because wouldn’t the peps in your league be able to see your team and copy it or is this not the case.

    1. It’s a good point, PA, but with the amount of sharing that is going on with team assessments and selection suggestions, there is little extra to gain from the spying you suggest. If I looked up Motts’ team and saw that he had picked Duffield, Pendles and Boomer as relatively unique picks, I’m not necessarily going to change my selections of Enright, Gibbs and Brown. If Grimmo had picked 3 rookies in his midfield, this would be no reason to doubt my own strategy of 2. If Duck had loaded his forwards with 5 premiums, who says he’s right to do so? Everything under the sun has already been suggested and intricately cogitated over so, in the end, you just have to be confident about your own strategy and assume that your opponents feel similarly prepared.

And then there’s the risk that the SC servers will inevitably overload on Friday, leaving you with your mock team or at least some unintentional selections – that would be a disaster; one that could be prevented.

  5. Now motts. I have been told about your fantasy football teaming ability. From a reliable source, i hear your the man to go to. Now…Three starting midfield rookies…What is your thoughts on this. (Martin, Trengove, Barlow, with shuey and bastinac on the bench)

  6. I also have a dillemma with my forward line. I currently have BBBB, but only have 1,400 in the kitty. Do I downgrade Hall, who is 33, for Dangerfield, who is more likely to play 22 games than Hall? This would then free up around 35,000 to cover my team if i need to trade out a player early on? Dangerfield could also make me money, but i am a bit worried with his disposal, which is why i dont have him in my team so far. WHat do you think I should do?
    cheers
