Motts Movers – Defenders – R9

by Motts on May 18, 2009

If you’re like me and can’t wait for the teams to be announced on Friday so you can start trading the next 4 days draaaaaaag along. Here are some options in your backline to think about this week:

Jack Grimes – if you haven’t heard of him yet you must be living under a rock. The guy had a back problem that meant he didn’t play one round last year but has made up for lost time in the last couple of weeks with scores of 92 in his first game against West Coast in R7 and then 109 against the Dogs last week. If you’re prepared to risk going with a player who has had injury issues in the past then its pretty hard to look past Jackie Boy at $188,400. Watch his value shoot up over the next few weeks.

Brendon Goddard – if you’re looking for a Rolls Royce option down back look no further than Goddard who averages 121.75 and has twice scored over 170. The guy goes forward and kicks goals or he just floats across the back racking up the possessions and the tackles. He’s not cheap at $610k but by Goddard he’s worth it.

Paul Bower – Grimmo loves referring to this guy as “Gentleman’s Perm”. If you’d told me I’d be recommending GP at the beginning of the year I would have checked your miso for hallucinogens. But since a couple of average 40’s in the first two rounds, the guy has consistently scored well maxing out at 154 in R4. He had 106 against Collingwood last week and his average over the last 5 rounds has been 101.40. Looking for a mid-priced option? He’s $427,900 having gone up $93,700.

Who to steer clear of:

Tom Williams – this guy came out a couple of years ago and had a couple of hundreds in his first few rounds. He showed plenty of promise and I traded him in late in the year as a cash cow. After suffering a number of injuries in relating to his shoulder, thighs and quads, he only played six games in ’08 . In ’09 he’s already played one more game than last year but is only averaging 42.57. Subsequently his value has dropped $65,100 to $221,100. Given his poor form and shocking history of injuries I’d look elsewhere.

Jared Petrenko – if you’ve already got him, this would be a great week to virtually do a direct swap for Grimes with the $98k you made on him. If you don’t have him, you’ve missed the boat. The kid came out in the first 4 rounds with scores of 65, 57, 75 and 59 but since then has seemingly fallen out of favour with Neil Craig and dropped right away averaging only 34.6 over the last 5 including a 16 last week. Seriously, you get 10 points for just running up the race to get onto the field. How the hell do you score only 16 points in an entire game?!? There are much better options out there.

Leigh Brown – Collingwood’s star recruit does go forward but rarely does anything with it. Even Collingwood fan’s don’t like him. He averages only 41 a round and has dropped $63,600 since the beginning of the year. Eeeeeeeeee awwwwwwwwww.

I think a lot of punters will get on Grimes this week mate, he’s doing very well. Couldn’t agree more about Leigh Brown either, he got a flogging on the radio over the weekend ….. glad his sorry arse isn’t in my team.
