Motts’ Movers – Midfielders R9

by Motts on May 20, 2009

Right, you’ve had a couple of days to digest the backs for R9. Lets now have a look at what should be the highest scoring section of your team – the Mids. I’ll give you 3 options here. A Rolls Royce, a good mid-priced option, and a bloke I think is a steal at the price he’s currently going at.

Bryce Gibbs (price – $513,900, ave – 106.50) – He went at number 1 two years ago, has shouldered everything the Blues have had to throw at him including leadership group duties, reads the play beautifully and is strong overhead. What more could you want? He’s had a 143 and a 124 over the last couple of rounds and has only gone up $13.5k since the beginning of the year. With his young legs underneath him he’s going to run out the year while others are fading. Get on ‘im.

Cale Morton ($457,600, 94.00) – I was this bloke last year as a rookie and gee he gave me some good numbers. This year Dean Bailey’s “handball-first-ask-questions-later” policy sees him getting a lot of possession evidenced by the 143 and 119 he’s scored over the last couple of weeks. His price has risen $129,800 already this year but if you’re looking for someone around the $450k mark I don’t think you could do much better.

Steele Sidebottom ($124,200, 65.50)– Has already played 2 games (67, 64) and will get a run this week so is due to go up. Dominated last year’s TAC Cup GF racking up 34 possessions, 14 marks, 11 inside 50s, 10 clearances and 10 goals. Is great on both sides of his body and could also be used as a forward.

Who to avoid?
Gary Ablett ($753,700, 148.00) – Yes, he’s God’s gift to SuperCoach and if you’ve still got him on the bench and have been winning games all kudos to you. But if you haven’t got him, don’t you think three quarters of a million dollars is just a little bit much to pay? At that price you could pick up a gun like Bartel and Sidebottom with change and still average over 150. His price has to come down. Grab him when it does.

Ricky Petterd ($289,500, 59.62) – Sorry Bob you were wr-wr-wr-wr-wrong. The guy simply ain’t much chop. Hasn’t scored higher than 85 all season and when you consider his price, there’s better value elsewhere. He’s gone up $84,900 this year. I’d piss him off now.

Travis Tuck – ($314,400, 67.17) – I had such high hopes for you, Trav. You were great in the pre-season and you opened up in R1 with a 125. “Happy days” I thought “I’ve unearthed a gem”. Since then you were injured in rounds 2 and 4 and haven’t scored above 75. You even scored 32 in the last round which is pitiful for a midfielder – especially one of your calibre! I’m just happy I got rid of you in R6 when you were still worth $348k.

Very happy with picking up Bryce mate, he’s by far exceeded my expectations and i wish i’d had him captain last week ….. bloody Chad did nothing for me!!

Had a tip that Sidebottom was going to play Anzac day game so grabbed him as a cheap rookie …. i think he made his debut the week after and has proven solid choice in R8, better than Beams i reckon.
