Motts Movers R13, 2013 – The Backs

Written by Motts on June 24 2013

Apologies for the late publication of the Movers this evening. I went to the gym. To make up for my tardiness I’m bringing you a bumper edition tonight with tons of Midpricer options for your reading pleasure.

Get stuck in!

Premiums

Heath Shaw ($557,900, 107.11, 59) – Best Defender going around so far this year and comes with the price to prove it. His lowest score for the year was a 51 against the Hawks in R3 but he’s more than compensated for that over the last couple of weeks with a 147 against the Dees followed by a 136 outing against The Dogs last week. The only downside is the possibility of missed games. For one reason or another he’s already missed 3 so far in 2013.

Bryce Gibbs ($503,300, 104.89, 58) – Another strong backman who’s spent significant time on the pine so far this year – a red vest followed by 3 games off for a dodgy hammy. Since then he’s come back and scored 121, 93, and 101 so it looks like he’s over it and you can pick him with confidence. I reckon he’ll stand up this week against The Swans.

Midpricers

Colin Garland ($462,000, 87.83, 28) – What the what?!? A Dees player leading the Midpricers? Yup! Check out his last 3: 114 against Hawthorn, 107 against The Pies, and 144 v The Saints. Woah! His variability is an issue so I don’t recommend him if you’re serious about this game – and the fact you’re reading these words means you are! – but with those 3 weeks under his belt he deserved a shout out.

Garrick Ibbotson ($496,400, 103.38, 65) – Snuck Ibbo into my Draft team after a 94 in his 2nd game this season (against GC in R6) and then sat back and watched with glee as he cranked out 142, 82, 112, 79, 137 and 98. I’m now seriously considering him for Goodes or Vlas this week

Bachar Houli ($487,400, 96.5, 79) – And this is bloke he’s gotta beat out for that spot. H scored 77 and 66 in the first 2 rounds this year. At this point, good mate Bob traded him out of his squad. Since then he’s gone on to record 6 tons and a couple of 90’s proving once and for all the Bob is the kiss of death. Public Service Announcement: Bob’s planning on bringing Nic Nat in this week.

Nick Malceski ($479,700, 93.58, 90) – Malsexi just keeps getting it done. Look at that average! 5 tons, a couple of 90’s and a couple of high 80’s have gone into that. Given the dearth of quality backmen this year, why not put your faith in The Eski?

Trent McKenzie ($462,900, 97.25, 63) – I’ve seen him getting a few mentions when watching the GC games but I never knew his average was THAT high. He only started playing in R5 but since then his scores have been: 108, 76, 91,91, 102, 88, 114, and 108. You coulda got him for $360k at the start of the season.

Jack Hombsch ($406,900, 105, 52) – I’ve gotta put him in because of his stats (a 121, a 93 and a 101) but do I recommend him for anything but your SC Draft team? Not on your Nelly. Motts rates him as: Flash in the Pan.

Michael Talia ($309,800, 84.33, 2) – Here’s an interesting one for you. Has only played 3 games so far this season but since opening with a 69 against Port, he’s taken a good hard look at himself during the bye then come back and scored a 94 against Collingwood and then a 90 against Richmond. Again, he’s another one for your Draft team unless you’re prepared to take a hell of a risk on an untested player.

Rookies

Mitchell Clisby ($96,200, 71) – one game in for 71. They don’t get much cheaper than Mitch which on that basis alone will mean he makes his way in to many, many teams this week. I’d warn you about his job security but if he gets named again this week and you’re short of cash, you probably won’t listen.

Blayne Wilson ($115,900, 72.5, -76) – He of the unkind parents has now played a couple of games for returns of 89 and 56. Got a tough draw coming up with Essendon, Adelaide, Freo and Sydney all looming so think twice about him.

  1. I want to bring in a defender this week (sorry if this is meant to be in trade talk). Who is the best choice to bring in considering finals run as well, Shaw or Ibbotson? Save 50k with Ibbo, and seems pretty consistent. Biggest downside is FURL but Shaw comes with the usual stupidness.

Ibbotson has – GWS, Melb, Port and St Kilda versus
Shaw having – Syd, Hawks, West Coast and North

    Ibbotson thumbs up
    Shaw thumbs down

  2. Nicely done Motts…. I have Clisby in the RR going up tomorrow and was curious why you thought his JS was poor? Obviously we need to wait to see if he gets another run and how he goes, but my line of thinking was Neil Craig has probably liked him for a while, and this was his first chance to give him a run… so JS potentially very good. Thoughts?

  3. What about Oxley at Collingwood? Fair enough his JS is pretty poor but he is a Def/Fwd and can easily be swapped around with Staker. If you’ve got decent cover in each position plus staker then I think its worth considering.

Imagine having another $200k to play around in your sky rocket

  4. Surely Goddard should get a mention also? I’m comparing Gibbs v Goddard and the in game eye test, both have been good of late.

  8. thought these 2 would be keepers, but it’s time to go Goodes and Vlastuin

    TU – Goodes/Vlaustin to H Shaw/ B Wilson
    TD – bad trades

  9. Oxley comes in this week for Docherty – not for his scoring potential, but to enable Staker to swing between DEF/FWD as bench coverage.

Also enables be to upgrade Vlas to H Shaw…

  10. Looking for 2 premium defenders to complete my defence this week.
I have settled on H.Shaw as one of them.
The other was going to be Hanley but his recent performances have put me off.

    Have 500k to spend.
Defence will be: Goddard, Gibbs, Birchall, Hartlett, Shaw, ??, (Goodes, Thurlow)

    Considering Hibberd/Ibbotson/Heppel/Duffield/Hanley

Who should my last defender be?

  11. Defence: Goddard, Birchall, Vlastuin, Goodes, Staker, Hanley (Emerg: Thurlow, Frost)

Im in a bit of a bind. With 200k in the bank I Need to trade Birchall obviously, and Goodes if he doesn’t play (finally as a rookie upgrade).

Thinking of bringing in Houli & Heppell. It would then leave me with 2 Bris, 2 Ess and 2 Rich on the field. Anything bad about this? Should I change my mind on Houli or Heppell? Considered Gibbs…

  12. My backline reads:
    Goddard,GIbbs,Heppell,Shaw,Birchall,Goodes(L.Brown,Saunders)
Looking to trade Birchall to Hibberd
Do you think I can play Goddard, Heppell and HIbberd in the same backline, considering Goddard and Heppell are more midfielders than they are defenders?

T/U: Playing all three bombers will be fine
    T/D: LOL nope

  13. With so many teams already having most of the premium defenders, it could be an interesting poll to see who people are bringing in for Birchall, Mr. Motts

  14. Running Goddard, Heppell, Shaw, Gibbs, Hanley, Birchall (Thurlow, Saunders)
Thinking Birchall to Ibbo but considering Eski and Holi thoughts?

Mid, ruck and forwards and finalised for finals so keen to drop birch.

  15. My backline reads:
Goddard, Shaw, Gibbs, Birchall, Goodes, Vlaustin (Brown, Thurlow)

Was thinking of giving Vlas the flick, but with Birchall going down am giving some thought in going Birch to Ibbotson, Thurlow to Oxley (for the dpp) and holding onto Vlaustin. That would give me the 4 most consistent defenders plus 2 mid pricers.

    Is this a good idea?
