Motts Movers R14, 2013 – The Mids

Premiums

Ryan Griffen ($670,500, 127.55, 117) – The Griffo trained rolled on last week after he opened up a can on the Demons to the tune of 148 taking his average over the last 7 games to 143. That’s not a typo. Guess who he’s facing this week? GWS. This would have to be up there with the best streaks ever produced in SC. There’s your first post topic, Don C.

Gary Ablett ($687,900, 136.46, 155) – I think we’d all agree he didn’t do enough last week with 115 (geez we’re tough task masters). To the extent that some who’d placed the VC on him actually switched the captaincy to someone else playing later in the round. No doubt Brisbane will Raines on his parade again this week (see what I did there?) so I’d suggest V’ing him up.

Scott Pendlebury ($624,500, 126.77, 121) – I put the mozz on Swanny last week, so given the Pies are playing my boys tonight, I’m hoping to do the same to Pendles. Its unlikely though, he’s scored the second most points in SC this year behind guess who. His lowest and only sub-ton score so far this year was a 96 against Freo in R7. After that it’s a 105 in R4 against Richmond. Everything else has been above 110, all the way up to 161 (Saints R6). Will probably get Carrots this week who’s done a right job on him in the past so hold off if you can.

Midpricers

Ben Cunnington ($490,400, 92.82, 82) – His performances over the last month have helped take the focus off his surname which always reminds me of a certain act which usually brings a smile to the face of half the population. 101 v WC, 116 v Adelaide, 108 v St Kilda and 107 v GC. Nice going, Benny Boy!

Matthew Broadbent ($384,200, 78.38, 4) – If you had him, and only 2,145 coaches do, you’d tear your hair out at his inconsistency. Raises the bat some weeks (4 so far this year), scores 40’s and 50’s in others. He’s done well recently though which is why we’re talking about him. Over the last 3 he’s gone for 88, 123 and 107.

Luke Ball ($425,400, 96, 49) – $301k at the beginning of the season is starting to look like a bargain for BAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Since scoring 64 in his first game back against the Cats in R8 (no vests), he’s gone for 101, 105, 119 and 91. Would be a great pick up for your draft team if you’ve got one, otherwise I’d just respect him from afar. Note: he did his knee in a game against the Blues last year. Just sayin’.

Rookies

Matthew Arnot ($115,900) – Bikkies came out and scored an 85 on debut. There’s a lot to like about that, especially when you consider his price. Unfortunately didn’t get named this week – Vlas is back – so do not under any circumstances bring him in.

Tom Sheridan ($115,900) – 68 in his first game for the year for Freo against the Cats. Good effort but can you see him getting a lot of games with Freo in the mix for a Top 4 spot? I can’t.

Brad McKenzie ($115,900, 57.5, -46) – Got a couple of games last year before leaving the coaches that had jumped on him a week early stranded, and has now played 2 for the Roos this year. Got the vest in the first and lodged a 26. Got a free run against GWS and had a field day – 89.

  1. Cunnington is a good recommendation if you’re short of cash but he hasn’t played for the last two weeks due to family reasons so he may be a little under his best this week.

  3. Surely that “Cunnington” act brings a smile to the faces of more than half the population, Motts … perhaps when you do it, you frown or cry, but some guys don’t mind it either …

As regards Griffen’s hot streak of 7 games at an average of 143 being one of the longest ever, that really puts Gablett’s performance into perspective:

    2009 SEASON (18 games) – average 140
    2012 SEASON (20 games) – average 138
    2013 SEASON (13 games thus far) – average 136.5

Looks like Griffen still has a lot to learn.

PS. The other massive hot streak I remember was Jonathon Brown, 2006. He only played 10 games before season ending injury, but during those 10 games he averaged 140.5 points. Great stuff !!
