Motts Movers R15, 2013 – The Backs

Written by Motts on July 8 2013

Its another one of those weeks where the real world is going to impinge upon my ability to analyse the data and bring you the recent top SC performers.

So for the benefit of all – and we have thousands of readers daily – check out our stats page, run your eye over the numbers, and write up a Defender that you think is worth of mention for his performances over the last few weeks.

If you’re feeling really energetic and verbose, do a Premium, Midpricer and Rookie.

Thanks!

  3. Premiums:

    Brendon Goddard $ 523, 200. Avg: 105.7

The Essendon midfielder is the highest averaging defender this season and the most popular Supercoach pick. Has the Doggies and GWS at Etihad in his next two; he averages 117.93 at the venue.

Wait on: Heath Shaw, Bryce Gibbs, Garrick Ibbotson

    Mid-Pricers:
    Scott D Thompson $485, 300 Avg: 98.57

B/E of 54, 4 tonnes in the last five games. Very tough run home; but that mightn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

    Pearce Hanley $ 411 100 Avg: 98.4

Susceptible to the forward tag; don’t buy Hanley if you want guaranteed scores of 80-110. Hanley can be held to scores >70 but can also deliver the big 110+ scores. Brisbane also have a reasonably easy run home.

    Hamish Hartlett $430, 300 Avg: 90.29

Hasn’t raised his bat since round 5, but has been consistently averaging around 90 points in his last five: 86, 94, 79, 95, 94.

If you’re tossing up between the two ‘H’s, consider that

Hanley averages higher, is cheaper and has a higher score ceiling
Hartlett is more reliable, has DPP and is consistent.

Keep for now: Brett Goodes, Dean Terlich.
    Trade: Nick Vlastuin.

    Rookies:

Look at Xavier Richards of Sydney; he’s injured, but if you need a rock bottom priced downgrade to, for example, trade Watson up to Dangerfield/Ablett/Pendlebury, he could form a useful DPP swing with Staker.

Sydney have the next four and five of the last 8 games on Sunday, meaning he has great loophole flexibility.

  4. My choice of Prem are Gibbs,Goddard,Taylor and Shaw
I believe best value choices for next in line would have to be Goodes ( very consistent dpp) Staker (starting to really impact and also dpp) TMc (Ablett protege) no others have really grabbed my interest.

My Def are God,Gibbs,Shaw,Taylor,Goodes and Staker
with Frost and B Wilson on bench.

I have two trades left with 205K in bank, in top 8 in all my leagues and Jobe to deal with, I have dpp cover all over but my dpps for the mid/back are all in back, so…I am thinking after a lot of research, to use both trades and hope the dpps will get me through

TU = Watson to Pendles, Hodge out ,Goodes moved to midfield, TMac in. and use all my dpps to cover me for the rest of the year.
TD = Watson and Hodge to Dangerfield and K. Jack and complete Midfield to cover any deficiencies in the back.

    or please Comment something else

  5. Premiums:
    B Goddard $523k, av 105, be 99.
You all have him anyway, but with 8 tons he is the top performer in defence this year.

S Thompson $485k, av 98, b/e 45. With 117, 109, 66, 124 and 119 as his last 5, and near premium status and price there is a case for him to be in the premiums. But despite my 500k/100 av as my policy limit im still counting him as a premium as he is sure to be one next week with that b/e. Well worth a look and a good POD.

Special mentions to H Shaw. Hold off a week with that b/e of 154

    Midpricers:
This is where all the action is in defence.
D Terlich $430, av 80, be 38. Two tons on the trot and way better than his average suggests. Might be a bit of a stretch at this price for many, despite the breakeven.

P Hanley $411, av 98, b/e 49. A bargain given his early season price of $547. 6 tons, but cannot shake a tag, and was sub 50 just 3 weeks ago.. Bargain based on his average, but a less reliable option than many.

B Staker $330, av 80, b/e 16. More famous for eye rolling rather than footy skills, he is still a good player who came in at a rookie price due to long term injury. Dpp is a benefit, but decent dpp fwd/def are rare. A downgrade to X Richards $96k in combo is a worthy consideration for those needing flexibility.

B Goodes (you may have heard of him) and M Talia very worthy mentions.

  6. PREMIUM:

    Brendon Goddard $523,200, Avg: 105.7, BE: 99

Best defender in SuperCoach, and therefore should be one that everyone holds. However, most SuperCoach players do have him, so you’ll be kinda sheepish and won’t offer any POD.

No other premiums are worth recommending, as their BE’s are too high and there are only four of them. Ibbotson however is worth considering as he’s under $500k and is good for the valued POD.

    MID-TIER:

    Scott Thompson $485,300, Avg: 98.6, BE: 55

Would be a very shewed pick in your backline. Has hit the ton in 4 of his past 5 games, and better still, less than 4% of SC teams have him. An awesome choice if only for the POD.

    Pearce Hanley $411,100, Avg: 98.4, BE: 49

Effectively a slumped premium, who’s very cheap due to a mid-season halt. Can be tagged, but Brisbane have an easy run home, and can blast out big scores. This week is probably the only week you can pick him if you want him.

    Harry Taylor $486,100, Avg: 96.3, BE: 96

Geelong play 5 of their last 8 games at home and less than 10% of SC teams have him, so could be a shewed option in your backline. Inconsistent scores are a worry, though.

    Robert Murphy $500,500, Avg: 96.1, BE: 99

Less than 2% of SC teams have him, but will come at a cost. Probably didn’t do well enough against GWS to stake his claims.

    Trent McKenzie $476,000, Avg: 95.9, BE: 111

With only 3% of SC teams having him, he could be a good POD in your backline. Could wait a week though.

    Michael Talia $379,200, Avg: 91.8, BE: 27

Good POD, but comes at an awkward price. JS is kinda questionable too. Good option for your Draft League though if he’s still available.

The other options aren’t really worth it in my opinion.

As for the big 3 defence rookies, I’d keep Terlich and Goodes for now, but ditch Vlaustin if you still have him. You’d probably need to ditch one of Terlich or Goodes for the finals though, unless you have six premiums in your backline.

No real downgrade options available this week, sadly. Clisby seems to be fading, don’t go for them. I suppose Xavier Richards would be an OK option if you need the DPP and are desperate for a downgrade.

    Anything I’ve missed? Comment then.

  7. AFL Comission meeting tonight out of session.

Word is that they will hold a press conference to announce a zero tolerance policy on players admitting to taking performance enhancing drugs!

It appears they will stand down Jobe Watson for 4-6 weeks pending the outcome of the ASADA investigation.

Got to hand it to the AFL, always one step ahead of the game! 😉

  9. Anyone remember Corey Enright? Proven gun who started slowly and very consistent for 90-100 rest of the year. Less than 5% of Teams have him, Good POD

  10. I would definitely consider bringing in Trent Mckenzie if you haven’t already got him in your team. High BE of 111 this week, so wait a week and then bring him in…….but a Defender averaging 95+ with a Standard Deviation of just 11.11 in 9 games…..thats pretty value i would say! Best SD from the group of top defenders

  11. Call me crazy but I’m keeping an eye on Jack Grimes over the coming weeks. Was averaging 99 over the first five games before getting injured in the first quarter of Round 6 and scoring a 13. Price is expected to plummet to $360K in a fortnight by which time he might be starting to find some form again. One to keep an eye on at least.

  12. Which trade option do I take?

Watson – Selwood OR Watson – Stevie J
Rockliff – Johnson Vlastuin – Scott Thompson (NTH)

Vlastuin is starting on the field right now as is Rockliff
