Motts Movers R2 – The Forwards

by Motts on April 9, 2010

Rounding out this week’s edition of the Movers is the frontline. First up are the fellas who have had their colours lowered over the last fortnight.

Kurt Tippett ($425,900, 39.50) – Kurt was unceremoniously dumped from The Maulers this morning after his appalling start to the season. Word from the club is that he has knee tendonitis. Why didn’t I hear about this in the preseason when I drafted him in? Should be a super player one day but just doesn’t seem ready yet.

Brendan Fevola ($495,700, 51.00) – We knew it would take time for Fev to settle into the forward structure at Brisbane but while Jono has gone about business as usual, Fev has managed only 3 goals in both games he’s played and not much more.

Brent Harvey ($499,300, 60.50) – Its tough putting Boomer in here because he’s only played one bad game (last week’s output of 11 against the Saints) but when you’ve only got 2 weeks to work off, thems the breaks. Have no doubt: he’ll bounce back and the only time you’ll see him mentioned in this column from now on will be on the other side of the ledger.

Dishonourable mentions: Barry Hall, Mark Williams, Warren Tredrea and Travis Cloke.

And the blokes you’d love to have in your team right now (if you didn’t already have them):

Nick Riewoldt ($600,500, 163.50) – I try to only highlight the extraordinary performances in these posts and we’ve come to expect those from Roo but a 163 average is beyond expectations even for him. Can you imagine the Saints in the Top 4 without him? Me neither.

Jonathon Brown ($525,400, 150.50) – Had his Maulers guernsey presentation dinner last night where a lot of fun was had by all. As Aker said on The Footy Show last night: he’s in a good place at the moment with a wife and a young child and its showing in his footy. You know you’re doing alright when they’re comparing you to one of the greatest players of all time, Wayne Carey.

Ryan Houlihan ($419,300, 109.50) – Gotta give props to Houla and to a lesser extent his brother –in-exile, Eddie Betts (happy 100th game this week, Eddie!). He’s always delivered it on a dime so he’s a very good SC player to have because his efficiency is right up there. I’m just hoping for the sake of the Blues that he kicks a few for us along the journey which so far he hasn’t done.

Other honourable mentions: Ryan O’Keefe, Brett Ebert, Robert Murphy, and Luke McPharlin.

Who else in the forward lines has inspired emotions (either positive or negative) in you these last 2 weeks?

Patty Dangerfield deserves a mention as he has been the Crows only shining light in the past couple of weeks (Did you see those contested marks against C. Bolton on the weekend?). I have finally lost patience with Robbie Gray and used a trade I didnt want to, but with Dangerfield set for a healthy price rise I just couldnt resist. Free’s up some cash in the bank which will allow me to get one C. Judd in the weeks to come.

I’d be interested to know what other trade you made to make the cash for buying J Brown Motts…
Tippett > Brown
Clark > Seaby??

Clark -> Krooz. Rucks are now Krooz and Nic Nat.
Forward line now reads: Roo, ROK, Jono, Higgins, Gia, Waite, Ziebell. If anyone has a more potent front line than that I’d like to hear about it.

I’m in the same position at the moment, got Clark in the ruck Tippett in the forward line (desperately want Brown), but only have $4,000 in the bank, so that trade doesn’t work for me. Which ruck would you suggest apart from Krooz, who were you’re other considerations?

The only other ruck I considered was Sandi but that didn’t give me the cash I needed for JB. If you’ve already got Naitanui then I’d say your only option is to trade for Seaby if you want Brown.

Got Hille in the other spot, so Nic Nat is an option, but still not convinced on any of the ruck spots. I’d take Ottens, but his durability is a little unsettling, and Jamar? well he’s a Melbourne player, I’ve always thought Seaby as a huge dud when he played for WCE so still not sure about him now.

Traded tippet for ottens cash saved helped buy ROK after trading BOOMER.Wanted to save trades as long as possible but the scores of these players did’nt make the choice that hard.ROK should be a certain captain of all players who have him in his team this week. Also keeping a close eye on Gram his scores are not setting the world on fire.Have given Silvagni a run this week & put Goose on the bench.

Goose is much more experienced than Silvagni, and Silvagni might not be used to the quality of ball entering the Cats’ forward line.

Definitely, if we’re judging players on the season so far. Not many would have picked him which makes him all the more valuable.

Haha. Point taken, Motts (one hundred times). Of course what I meant is that we all try to include some players in our team who aren’t that popular in others’ teams. That’s how we can gain an advantage (or disadvantage). Ultimately none of us want all the SC teams to look too similar, even though it’s unavoidable to an extent.

Medhurst on the pine for mine. Pods could go either because of debut and a undermanned Geelong, but Medhurst could go either way because he is Medhurst and he is playin against the Saints who would like to make a statement against the pies as they are meant to be top 4 contenders.

Haven’t seen too much of him, but he looks a lively type on the field: scores of 72 and 59 are OK (13 disposals in each game), but you could certainly do better with a midfield rookie and bank the spare cash.

Pending any last minute injury news my trades are all but done…
Clark > Seaby
Tippett > Brown
Pretty popular one I think, but I’ve thought about it for a while and have finally made the decision: leaves me with a handy ~ $115 000 in the bank.
18 trades remaining. When Gray returns, the forward line looks very potent:
Riewoldt, O’Keefe, Brown, Franklin, Gray, Hall, Medhurst
subs: Hitchcock, Gumbleton
happy with that!

I am the salmon swimming upstream who thinks trades this week is a massively sensible idea – you won’t make this much money off 2 trades again in the season. Of the 3 I would keep Hall – the lesser of 3 evils.

Personally I’d go Dangerfield (or Ballantyne if you have Dangerman) and Brown for the other 2. That would leave you with pockets full of coin and 2 over-performing forwards for their price tag.

Well, that and for mine it’s the fact that all the experts are leaning on Scott to reduce Harvey to a tagging role for at least a few rounds. It’s the sort of thing Scott needs to do as a young coach trying to make an impact…he needs to be seen to be proactive, and Harvey would do well at it which would build his confidence after the worst game of his career.

He’s billing $500k. I’m guessing he’ll rock up at a solid 45 average for the next 4 weeks. Imagine when his 110 drops off the calcs in 2 weeks…his value will drop faster than US Real Estate.

I doubt Scott will use him as a tagger, he actually said Boomer should have got more support from his team mates:

It’s just a simple calculation, chin music. Divide the player’s cost by their average to see how much you’re paying per point that they scored. I don’t usually calculate it but then people don’t usually get stuck into me for who I’ve chosen to highlight in Motts Movers.
