Motts Movers R3 – The Mids

Written by Motts on April 12 2011

The Guns

Daniel Jackson ($449,900, 118.33) – I knew this ranga was good but I’ve been wary because of his propensity to miss games either through injury or suspension. Has a tough game to get through this week against the Pies but his BE of 42 means he should add to the $29k he’s already increased.

Andrew Embley ($473,300, 137.33) – I confess, I thought Embley was past it. 30 in a couple of months I thought his best was behind him. I’m not afraid to say it, I was wr-wr-wr… not right yet. Went up $50k last week and has a BE of 37 so you can expect him to go up again. The big test will be this week against the Hawkers at Aurora. Has missed only 2 games in 2 seasons.

Brent Moloney ($430,100, 111.67) – It may seem strange that I’ve selected Mr Moloney as a Mover this week given he’s in the Melbourne doghouse at the moment but give it some thought. Here’s a bloke already averaging 111 with a “drinking problem” who will now kick the booze and knuckle down for the rest of the season. Not only that, he’s up against the Witches Hats this week and has byes coinciding with non-competitive weeks. No. Brainer. Oh, and did I mention that Melbourne faces the GC again in R23 when you should be planning on being in the SC semi’s?

Honourable mentions:  Luke Hodge ($566,800, 114), Cameron Ling ($374,400, 114) – neither have yet changed in value.

The Nuns

Alan Didak ($458,700, 74.33) – Had it going from the first game last year with a 116 against the Dogs but didn’t have a questionable shoulder then. A 125 BE this week ain’t beyond him (especially given he’ll be playing a depleted Tiger defence), all the same though, I’d sit tight a little longer if you’re considering him.

Kane Cornes ($458,800, 79) – Port are getting owned by every team they play at the moment and its being reflected in Kane’s scores. With Cassisi out, its one less gun midfielder the opposition has to tag meaning they’re going to Kornes and Boak. Even if this guy’s price drops to $350k I wouldn’t bring him in.

Kade Simpson ($451,400, 79.67) – Averaged 100 last year playing in a stacked midfield which is no mean feat and scored 124 on debut against The Tiges but how can you only score 52 against Gold Coast?? Members of the cheer squad marking Carlton shots at goal that night scored more than that! Now has a 188 BE against the Bombers this week so will drop more. Carlton have their first bye in R8.

  1. If you’ve got him, hold onto him. Not worth a trade. I’m still hurting from trading out Everitt last week.

  2. Good to have The Movers back Mottsy… great write up. Embley is in awesome touch at the moment, it will be interesting to see if he can maintain it…… Actullay, funny thing, I played against a fella whos team is called Tasty Embley, and doesn’t even have Embley in his team, which was just as well.

  3. Given that most of us are out of contention for the big prize money on offer for winning the whole thing…

I’m interested on people’s thoughts about trading for the next few weeks?

If I read it correctly, there’s no team vs team competition until Rnd 7 (?) now, so is it a good time to just sit back, save a couple of trades, take stock and see what happens with player averages/prices?

Or is the time to trade now, before duds decrease and guns increase in time for the next League games?

  4. Adds more weight to the GnR strategy – who would even consider starting the season with at least two of Jackson, Embley and Moloney in their midfield?

  5. For the prize… they are the 4 teams that play the witches hats during Supercoach Finals!
What do I need to do to collect my prize, just keep coming back?

  8. This week is gonna hurt with Goddard, Boyd, Libba, Higgins and the volt all resting on the pine. Thats about 500 points just there my team is gonna loooooose…..

what do I do? currently ranked 395 overall….

Just suck it up and hope my usual bench coverage players of curnow, swallow, duigan, otten, matera and petrie all step up?

Or trade someone like Knights and Krakouer for a cheap rookie and a gun. Have $167,500 in bank…

FWD line probably needs the most help this week with both higgins and Volt sitting out. Petrie and Matera arent gonna get me 100+ each….probably nothing even close.

  10. Its a marathon not a race, champ. Stay the course. I guarantee you, the chick/bloke that wins it all this year won’t have made any trades this week.

  11. I think so. Im a statistician for the Casey Scorpions VFL team, and he absolutely dominates the VFL, so I dont see why they wont give him senior game time.

  13. He’s shown the ability to score very well and very poorly. I think he will eventually be a gun but two things worry me about his JS – Tom Scully coming back and the Beau Muston rule.

  18. Yeah Motts i know you’re right mate. Just so hard. Probably wont trade but if I do i think it would be something like this

    – Petrie out and Prestia in (have Z Smith as ruck cover)
    – Knights out and O’Keefe or Rioli in (or Dawes, Silvia, Hurley?)

    Keep the trades?

  19. NHWMT
At your ranking it is a very reasonable strategy to aggressively upgrade this early to remain with the leaders. That’s why we have the extra 4 trades this year. I am at 3200 (approx. 350 from leader) and am looking at making up ground over the next 3 weeks of the byes as that was part of my initial team selection strategy.
I would look at your team make-up for Rd’s 5 & 6 as well when you choose an upgrade target.

  20. Well, there you have it, NHWMT. 2 very different pieces of advice. Maybe just compromise – one trade only 🙂
