Motts Movers R3 – The Rucks

Written by Motts on April 12 2011

The Tall Timber

Dean Cox ($479,000, 138.33) – Admit it, until you saw his preseason scores this year, you thought he was done. Don’t be ashamed, we all did. Massive took a couple of gulps from the fountain of youth over the summer and is back to the kind of form that saw him average 111 in 2008 and 9. There’s nothing to say that he won’t go a little crazy against a Renouf-led Hawks this week either. Its one thing to say “I’ve got a huge Sandilands in my Ruck division”. But how many of us can say we have a Massive Cox?

Paddy Ryder ($449,700, 120.67) – A lot of us would be Cox/Sandilands combo’ers but how many of us are Cox/Ryders? (I’m not, but Big Sexy probably is). It took guts to select Paddy given the uncertainty around how The Dons would go this year but the new rules suit him to a ‘C’. You coulda captained him up in any of the first 3 weeks and been happy with his output: 141 (v The Dogs), 128 (v Sydney) and 105 (v The Saints). Goes missing in R24 and that’s probably the reason most didn’t select him. But until then he’s gonna make you wish you did.

Honourable mentions: Brad Ottens ($373,700, 111.67), Tom Bellchambers ($179,100, 87.5) and Nic Naitanui ($346,400, 92.50) – neither of the latter 2 have changed in price yet.

The Dead Wood

Darren Jolly ($356,600, 60) – Came home super strong last year – from R13 to R22 he scored: 115, 127, 100, 81, 120, 73, 88, 85, 118, and 91. Those who liked the cut of his jib paid close attention in the pre-season and then couldn’t get him out of their teams fast enough. What’s happened?? Ruck’s are supposed to be the flavour-of-the-month now the new rules are in.

Keplar Bradley ($399,300, 66.33) – Strung a few good games together last year and everybody started talking about Kep being The Next Big Thing. Well, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Kep ISN’T The Next Big Thing. He’s just a very naughty boy.

  1. if i have a spare trade this week, is it worth swapping joel tippert for z.smith?
tippert was in my time just to swap with petrie when either sandi or ryder had a bye..

  2. Petrie vs Smith for R2 spot is a huge contest!

Went with the one Prem ruck in Cox for the year and have been impressed (like everyone) with Smith so far.

Pressure on Petrie to keep his spot, there’s no extra value with him either as I don’t have the DPP player to swap him with up forward.

Good problem to have I suppose…

  3. Ottens is in exceptional form…. Prob the first pre-season he has done since ’07. Now he’s the primary and single ruck in a top 4 side…. I don’t think we will see many sub 100 scores (and I traded him in last week 🙂 )

  4. I KNEW you wouldn’t be able to get thru this post without shouting to the world about your Ottens trade. Bet we don’t hear a peep from you when he goes down at some stage in the next 6 weeks :-D.

  5. Guys, should I wait till Round 7 (when the next price change is) to trade Jolly, or should I trade him now? I think he will improve, I just want to get some opinions.

Not sure what comp you’re playing champ but after a player’s third game his price changes weekly based on the average of his previous three scores.

  8. Not sure if Kepler deserved ‘dead wood’ treatment… true he forced a site name change due to your non believing last year Motts but now you’re just being petty.

  9. I’d trade him for Ottens.
Thats presuming you don’t have enough cash to get Cox, Mummy, Ryder or Sandi.

  11. I’ve got Sandi/Cox/Smith and Petrie/J.Tippet. That’s essentially five Ruck possibilities. Question is, do I really need all of these ruck options?

Before Smith proved himself as a viable ruck alternative (Sandi/Cox bye sub) I had Tippet as DPP so I could bring Petrie in for cover. Now, I’m thinking Smith is enough at R3 and there’s no real need for R4.

I’ve only used 1 trade and have 23K in the bank. Should I dump Tippet to gain some valuable cash (another 20-30K) for upgrades.

  12. Alternatively, I could wait for Smith to go up in $$ after this weekend then trade him out and leave the Petrie/Tippet combo. Hmmm…

  13. Really, it’s about how much you value your trades.
Is one trade worth 30k? Not sure.
I’d leave it for now unless you have 1 player in mind who’s just out of your price range.

  14. Motts isn’t petty. Motts goes solely by the numbers. Braddles has dropped $37k after averaging only 66. That’s simply not good enough for a bloke valued at almost $450k in the preseason.

  15. Over the last two days I’ve been mulling over what many may consider an insane move within my ruck department.

Currently my rucks are: Sandilands(avg 115.33), Smith (avg 89), Trengrove (avg 64.67) and Petrie (avg 60)
I have been considering Trading Sandilands and Trengrove (plus spend 119400) to get Cox (avg 138.33) and Ryder (avg 120.67). This would give me an average of 79 more points a week, and I feel more consistency as they should be more consistent than Trengrove.

What do you guys think? Thumbs up for pull the trigger, thumbs down for get away from the keyboard you raving lunatic.

  16. If he gets a ton and a half this week, I’ll give Jack/JC/TC/Leatherheadpro/Brad/Crime vs Time his own crystal ball post.
