Motts Movers R7 – The Defenders

by Motts on May 15, 2012

Its a special week this week. I’m going to give you the punters the opportunity to write the Movers column. (I feel like Robbo on Twitter with his Likes/ Dislikes and WWYRB).

In Comments, give me your best Defenders – premiums, mid pricers, and value picks. Feel free to even say a couple of words about why you chose ‘em too. Or don’t. Completely up to you.

David Johnson May 15, 2012 at 8:21 pm

PREMIUM
Heath Shaw … repaying the faith
Brett Deledio … would almost warrant a place on your MIDFIELD

MID-PRICERS
Scott Thompson … could be a good pickup for the R12 BYE
Greg Broughton … also repaying the faith

VALUE
Lee Spurr … probably the only real downgrade option this week

My biggest mistake so far was trading shaw to carazzo the week he went down. Heater is really starting to rub my nose in it now. I guess I could swallow my pride and bring him back…… Maybe later if I have any trades

Premo – cant go past God and Lids for your premos.

Mids pricers- birch and suckling will have bottomed out for the year with both around $470k. A bit cheaper, the pre season faves of lake, Hargrave, Conca and Clarke are all scoring well but have gone up a bit in $.

Value Picks- Not too much value around after those. The rookies in Spurr and Brennan are both looking ok – with questionable JS.

Lenny’s Movers R7 – The Backs

Premiums

Brendan Goddard ($504,900, 107.00, 66) – Very reliable, just keeps delivering week in week out.

Heath Shaw ($530,200, 105.4, 52) – Starting to hit full gear.

Grant Birchall ($475,800, 95.4, 101) – Hawthorn’s short passing game style very much suits Birch. I suggest get on! (Not just because i’m a Hawks fan.. ;) )

Midpricers

Paul Duffield ($456,700), 94, 86) – Playing a role under Ross Lyon where he finds plenty of the footy. Worth considering as a POD.

Scott Thompson ($474,400, 98.1, 60) – I would stay away, but once to keep an eye on.

Chris Newman ($468,400, 89.4, 71) – In a side that is finally stringing some wins together on a regular basis, he will be determined to keep standing up.

Value Picks

Lee Spurr ($116,700, 60, -51) – Mature age, solid downgrade option for Bugg/Ellis.

Jacob Brennan ($113,200, 67, -67) – No convinced on his job security, but will make some cash if he gets a few more games.

Beau Wilkes ($106,600, 44, -25) – Hard at the footy, if he can secure a place in the side, will be a slow burner but should keep improving.

Dazza’s Dazzling Movers -Backs
Premiums
Brendan Goddsrd-$504,900 Avg:107.0 Last 4:93,58,120,113
This Guy is a gun if you dont have him by now you have got rocks in your head he proved lastyear that he can score you 100 even if his havin a shocker but this year his been alot more consistant.
Brett Deledio-$591,600 Avg:118.1 Last 4:102,129,143,100
Mr reliable dont have to worry about this guy playin a bad game because that rarely happens.Just like Goddard he should be another player you should have.
Heath Shaw-$530,200 Avg:105.4 Last 2:120,136
I know this guys only been back for 2 games from injury but hard to ignore those scores.
Midpricers
Alex Rance $474,900 Avg:101.6 Last 4:86,91,98,108
Playing some good footy but next 4 weeks will test him with games against Bombers,Hawks,Saints, and Dockers. I would keep an eye on him for the next 2 weeks and if he produces the goods jump on.
Beau Waters $465,900 Avg:94.3 Last 4:100,100,120,96
Having another solid year and is a bargain at that price.
Scott Thompson $474,400 Avg:98.1 Last 4:112,83,104,117
Havnt heard much about this guy not sure why because take away that 83 v Gold Coast and his scores for the last month look really impressive and his next 4 games arnt the toughest either Power,Lions,Hawks,Gold Coast.
Value Picks
Lee Spurr $116,700 Avg:60.0 Last 2:50,70
Not many good Downgrade options but if your lookin to cash in on Ellis whos BE might be startin to get out of reach Spurrs the one to bring in as he has played 2 games and is set for a price hike but wait to see if he gets named this week as there could be a question mark over his JS.

If Rance’s next 4 games (against Bombers, Hawks, Saints and Dockers) are going to “test him”, would you say that is actually MORE of a test than his games played thus far against Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, West Coast and Sydney … during which he has averaged 104 SC points ?

Alex Rance last 4 Games
Geelong 86, West Coast 91, Port Adelaide 98 Sydney, 108
IMO Geelong havnt been in great form Port Adelaide are hopless i didnt watch the Swans v Tigers match but i heard the Tigers were all over them shouldve won by more and being in Melbourne wouldve helped his score.Westcoast on the other hand wouldve been a big test in which he scored 91 but the next 3 weeks in particular will be a huge test Bombers are flying, Hawks are starting to play some good footy and Saints just knocked off the flafg favourites and then he has freo.
As for Carlton and Collingwood i dont think there going as well as would like though Collingwoods startin to hit some good form.

I don’t think you quite understood my point, which was that Rance has actually done BETTER against the better teams (Collingwood, West Coast, Carlton, Geelong and Sydney Swans) – average of 104sc points, than he has against the worst teams (Port Adelaide and Melbourne) where he has averaged 96SC points. If – as you state – Geelong “haven’t been in great form”, then this actually makes my point even more pronounced because that would mean against the good teams (Coll, WC, Carl, and Syd.) his average actually INCREASES to 108sc points per round, and his scores against the “out of form” teams (Melb, Port and Geelong) decreases to 92 sc points – this doesn’t help your argument, it works against it … as it shows even MORE dramatically that Rance performs better against the better teams than he does against the worst. This means that it should HELP him, not “test” him, to be playing teams you consider good over the next 4 rounds. This was what I was stating previously.

So it seems your point is that Hawthorn, Fremantle, St Kilda and Fremantle are in better form than Collingwood, Carlton, Geelong, West Coast and Sydney !! Checked the ladder recently ?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

Reply

DamenS May 15, 2012 at 11:52 pm

PS – You can’t argue opposite points in one comment ie. You can’t say Rance performing well against Carlton isn’t significant as Carlton “aren’t going as good as they would like”, and at the same time argue St Kilda is a tough game as they just beat Carlton (“the premiership favourites”) who you said aren’t playing well. These are opposite arguments – either Carlton are bad (and Rance playing well against them is not significant and St Kilda is not a tough game as they just beat an out of form team) OR Carlton are “premiership favourites” (a good team) therefore St Kilda beating them shows St Kilda is also a good team, therefore Rance playing well against Carlton shows he plays well against the good teams.

Anyway – it is not even a given that a defender is disadvantaged by playing against a good team (any more than a Ruckman shakes in his boots about playing Collingwood or Hawthorn – who cares if they are “good teams” if they don’t have a good opposition Ruck you will be playing against ?). This is just common sense – playing against a “tough team” does not disadvantage all players and all positions equally and may actually help some (why are GWS putting so many of their good players in the backline ? Because that’s where the ball will be).

Max Movers- Defence ;)

Premiums:

Brett Deledio: ($591,600) – Last 3 round ave: 124
One word to describe him- Gun! Will be the highest scoring defender for sure by the seasons end.

Heath Shaw: ($530,200)- Last 3 round ave: 120-
Glad I kept him. Starting to repay some faith.

Beau Waters: ($465,900)- Last 3 round ave: 104.7
Quite a solid average. Keep in mind he has had an easy draw thus far.

Midpricers:

Scott Thompson: ($474,400)- Last 3 round ave: 101.3
Considering bringing him in this week for a POD.

Brian Lake: ($388,700)- Last 3 round ave: 94.7
Starting to hit some form. Should be a keeper for most sides.

Michael Johnson: (434,900) – Last 3 round ave: 87.3
Very unique and is playing a fantasy relevant roll under Lyon.

Value Picks:

Lee Spurr: ($116,700) Last 2 round ave: 60
Best out of these three to bring in IMO. Good job security and mature aged.

Jacob Brennan: ($113,200) Last 2 round ave: 67
Not completely sure about his JS but solid average.

Beau Wilkes:($106,600) Last 2 round ave: 44
Should remain in the side, but can’t see him averaging much.

Dazz hit the nail on the head with the 3 prems of Goddard, Deledio & Shaw. Got all 3, but these 3 defo the must have prems IMO.

5 reasons to get Goddard if you don’t have him:-
1/ @ $504,900 he is never to be repeated value – BE of only 66
2/ Only remaining MCG games in Round 19 & 20.
3/ Round 13 bye means you have in 11 & 12 & can up-grade others to cover in Rnd 13
4/ Def / Mid DPP (however Rich, Carlton & Hawks share Rnd 13 bye)
5/ Final 4 games v Melb, Geelong, GWS & Carlton (& unlikely to be rested).

Matty’s Round 7 Movers
Defenders

Ok assuming everyone has Deledio and Goddard (if you don’t GET THEM NOW!) here’s what I think:

Premiums:
Heath Shaw $530, 200. Average 105. Break-even 63. Last 2 games (after a injury forced lay off) 120 & 142.
The only reason Heater wasn’t in my starting team is because i got burnt like many in his suspension last year, also I hate collingwood. But I will be making room for him this week.

Heath Scotland $528 000. Average 101. Break-even 133. Last 3 games 106, 93, 97.
Considering bringing in this guy this week but don’t know how long he will be playing before he gets locked up! Is a mid/def. Defying his age by still having a solid start to the year.

Mid-Pricers
Brian Lake $388 700. Average 83. Break-even 39. Last 3 games 85, 91, 108.
If you jumped on this guy from the start you’d be one happy guy. Dosnt look like he’ll get back to the high scores of 2010 but starting to look solid. Not to late to jump on.

Ryan Hargrave $385 200. Average 84. Break-even 43. Last 3 games 110, 95, 98.
Once again a bargain pre round 1. Starting to hit form and still has money to be made or even could be a keeper.

Bargains:
Lee Spurr $116 700. Average 60. Break-even -49. Last 2 games 50 & 70. Looks to have almost cemented himself into the freo line up. Looks to be a great pick up for anyone looking to downgrade.

Jacob Brennan $113 200. Average 67. Break-even -65. Last 2 games 47 & 87.
Father/Son pick up and a favorite down at the eagles. Will get alot of game time this year now that he’s proven he can play. Check the team sheet this week, with scofield and selwood coming back he could be omitted or worse…subbed. Lee Spurr looks a better SC Prospect.

Okay, who is the better guy to trade out (consider job security as well):

Bugg (Average: 78, BE 82… next 3: Bris, Ess, Geel) – Thumbs Down

I have three players down back who will share the rd11 bye. So I am tempted to keep Ellis and trade Bugg (or Shiel in mids) purely for that reason. The good thing with Ellis is I think the Tigers will play him all season so he should be a safe 50 points bench cover if he is not the sub (I think they just rested the young fella this week).

Bugg (BE 82, Avg 78) to Birchall
Shiel (BE 53, Avg 66) to Pendlebury

Leaves me with about $10k

Thumbs up – Good idea
Thumbs down – Pendles can wait a week, get Spurr, trade Ellis, save your trades

Thinking of upgrading Ellis to Value Prem Defender (got Godd, Shaw, Lids & Broughton). Votes & thoughts would be appreciated: –

Thumb UP: – Newman (Mr Consistant). $468,440, BE 71, Ave 89, 5w ave-92, 3w ave-98
Predicted good scores in tough upcoming games with Ess (103), Hawks (102), St-Kilda (105) & Freo (95) before GWS & Rnd 13 bye.
Final 4 games of WB, Freo, Ess & Port.

Thumb DOWN: – Duffield. (Mr Up & Down) $456,700, BE86 , 2 scores in x 50′s, 2 x 90′s, 2 x 110′s & 1 x 130.
Hawks, WC, Adel, Rich then Rnd 12 bye.
Good draw after the bye – WB, Melb, GSW, Port, WC, Adel, Rich, NM & Melb

Also, had a close look at Birchall ($475,800 BE92), Rance ($474,900 BE76) & Burgoyne ($404,000 BE 78, Def / Mid DPP) who i think are all unders at the moment.
