Motts Movers – The 2011 Awards – The Forwards

Written by Motts on August 31 2011

Nat Fyfe ($454,600, 108.05) – Scored more points than any other Forward in 2011 (2,269) and did so after starting the season at $353k. Consistency was a little bit of an issue in the first half of the year – by R11 he’d scored 49, 71 and 58 – but after that, with only 3 exceptions, he belted out a ton every week. His highest score for the year was 164 against the Roos in R4 and his lowest was the aforementioned 49 which came against the Cats in R2. Has burnt everyone who showed faith in him by heading in for a shoulder op on the week of the GF (his first game out for the year) but can’t be faulted too much for that – he probably got you over the line in a ton of games up until now.

Adam Goodes ($496,600, 105.14) – When you’re being mentioned as a cheeky chance to pick up your third Brownlow you know you’ve had a pretty good year. Goodes is one of those rare players that can take over a game. I questioned at the beginning of the year whether the spring was still in his 31 year old legs. He answered decisively by burning off opponents last week in Geelong. At this early stage he’ll be back for another go-round with The Maulers in 2012. Played every game, raised his bat 15 times, season high: 167 (v Dogs in R18), season low: 47 (v Carlton in R6), scored 2,208 points.

Ryan O’Keefe ($420,000, 102.19) – Rather than choose either of the other 2 gun Sydney M/F DPP’s at the beginning of the year, I chose Ben McGlynn. Still kicking myself about that one. Both ROK and Goodesy have had stellar years (again) while Benny Boy has lost over $100k in value. ROK played every game, notched tons on 12 occasions and scored 2,146 points for the year. His best SC game for the year was against Brisbane in R11 when he scored 143. His worst came against Carlton in R6 (same game as Goodes – no coincidence they lost) when he scored 65.

Honourable mentions: Matthew Pavlich ($421,200, 105.70), Travis Cloke ($452,800, 100.57), Buddy Franklin ($492,600, 110.79), and Stevie J ($512,200, 107.89)

So there you have it, 3 Mid/Forward Dual Position Players make up the top 3 spots in 2011. Make a mental note now to flood your forward line with M/F DPP’s in 2012 – these guys get a ton of the ball. Of the Top 10 Forwards in terms of points scored, 7 of them were M/F DPP’s (Fyfe, Goodes, ROK, Pavlich, Harvey, Zaharakis and Chapman).

Over to you for the Thrillers and Chillers.

  1. Jack Riewoldt for chiller.

Got sucked in from his concussion causing a bargain pickup.

  2. Forget Chillers. Go straight to the freezer and take out A. Didak. He may thaw in time for next season. But I doubt it

  4. I will give a shout for Hale and Nahas.
Hale – Solid Ruck/Fwd option and has not scored below 86 since Rd14.
Nahas – a surprise packet with 11 scores over 90 this season.

  7. Unrelated, but everyone check out the herald sun article about our inspirational captain Kyle Matthews. He got king hit last year, was in a coma, couldn’t speak, couldn’t walk, lost heaps of his memory. He has fought his way back to normal life, and he played for our seniors on the weekend. He is an amazing individual, and a great comeback! GO KYLE!

  9. I said to myself at the end of last year “No more key position forwards, midfielders only!” and then promptly forgot. This year just another good example
