Movers & Shakers – Round 3

Written by The Salamander on April 4 2019

For those who are new around here (or those who might have forgotten), Movers and Shakers takes a look at the most in and out of form players in SuperCoach.

Players are listed according to the following template:
Player Name (Club, Price, Average)

DEFENDERS

Jake Lloyd (SYD, $608,200, 127.5)
Ah, Young Skywalker. Is he ever not up and about? Hated by all those who don’t have him, revered by those who do; Lloyd is perhaps less of a mover and more of a permanently high fixture. Maybe he deserves his gazillions of points, maybe he doesn’t; all I know is, if you want to win SuperCoach, you’re going to have to get him.

Kade Simpson (CAR, $570,300, 77.5)
A SuperCoach premium since before most of us were even born (okay, not quite), Simpson is yet to really get going this year, with scores of just 83 and 72 in the first two rounds. History says he’ll get better from here; his 13,760 coaches will be hoping that history is right. Whatever happens, I’m still backing him to keep on playing until he’s 50.

MIDFIELDERS

Lachie Neale (BRL, $607,300, 133.5)
No longer playing in Fyfe’s shadow, Neale has started the year in shockingly good form, posting 127 in round 1 followed by 140 last week. Can he keep it up for the rest of the year? As one of his 36,000+ coaches, I certainly hope so!

Elliot Yeo (WCE, $585,500, 77.5)
This spot nearly ended up going to Dustin Martin, but two dodgy scores trumps one dodgy score and an okay one, so Yeo it is. Averaging 24 disposals (11.5 contested), 6 clearances, nearly 400 metres gained, and a goal per game, he’s certainly finding plenty of the ball; unfortunately for his owners, he’s also averaging just 52 percent DE and a whopping 9 clangers every week. If he can find a way to clean that up, he could very well find his way into the ‘movers’ section in the not-too-distant future.

RUCKS

Scott Lycett (PTA, $421,200, 118)
Making the move from West Coast at the end of last season, Lycett has gone from playing second-fiddle to Nic Nat most weeks to being the Power’s no. 1 ruck, and so far seems to be relishing the extra responsibility. With his 118 average coming from a 69 and a 167, you could argue that it’s a bit premature to declare that Lycett is ‘moving on up’, and I’m not unsympathetic to that view. The 9 percent of coaches who started him certainly won’t be complaining, though.

Max Gawn (MEL, $692,100, 101.5)
Like Lycett, this assessment may be slightly unfair, being based on one bad score and one fairly decent one. Still, although a 102 point average isn’t terrible, it’s not what people payed nearly $700K for, so the 48 percent of coaches who started him will be hoping he can turn things around in the coming weeks and months. He scored 168 last time he played the Bombers, so tomorrow night’s game should be a good litmus test of where he’s at.

FORWARDS

Tim Kelly (GEE, $505,800, 108.5)
Averaging over 30 disposals (16 contested) and nearly 10 clearances a game, the second-year Cat has picked up right where he left off last season. Back-to-back tons, dual-position status, and a very reasonable $506K price-tag – is there anything more you could want in a forward? It seems that the question of who to start at F3 wasn’t really all that hard after all. The question of F2, on the other hand…

Isaac Heeney ($529,200, 76)
He’s not the only supposedly ‘premium’ forward to have started poorly in 2019, but it’s the sheer weight of expectation that gets Heeney the nod over other candidates like Mundy and Smith this week. Playing with a dodgy ankle in the forward line of a poorly-performing team, is that expectation fair? Perhaps not, but it’s hard to blame his 90+ thousand coaches for considering their options.

  1. is very tempting to use my last corrective trade on gawn to lysett & bank the 250k , scored well when nicnat was out , but the saner side of by brain has prevailed , going dev smith to lloyd instead , with a bit of luck , wont be trading again till my cows have fattened

        1. no need to trade again , i didnt start with the risky pics like heeney , dusty , williams etc , no negative coming next week , except for grundy & gawn

  2. Didn’t get to see all of the Geelong Melbourne game but Menegola just doesn’t seem right. Don’t have any other trades I’m going to do this week, is switching Menegola to Kelly worth it?
    T/U – trade
    T/D – keep

    1. He’ll be fine DB. Don’t do it. Posting low scores now means bigger ones later. Easy to say cos I don’t own him. But I do have Heeney and am not selling.

  3. Looks like over 60% of Heeney owners are trading him out.

I’m beginning to have FOMO thoughts!

    HeeEELLpP!!

    1. 16000 Coaches are trading him which is roughly 15% of the entire supercoach community that own him are trading him. By holding him he becomes more of a POD, so when he does well all these other coaches will regret trading him.

    2. I’m someone who is trading Heeney and whilst I think it’s too early to conclude he wont be a top fwd for the year, I am convinced that Tim Kelly will be.

That makes the decision for me very easy as even if Heeney turns it around he will be cheaper and easy to upgrade a rookie to.

  4. Unsure as whether to bring in Whitfield or Sicily as a corrective trade in my backline. Although whitfields numbers look great I feel like he could struggle to replicate these scores once Kelly and Ward return. Sicily looks brilliant and should have cracked 100 again this week but his temper worries me. What do you guys think?

    1. Sicily has a BE of 150
      Whitfield BE of 86
Also look at the bye rounds as that may help you with your decision.
I’d pick Whitfield due to Sicily’s probable price drop. He is looking to be a target in the next few rounds if he can throw in another average score.
Whitfield may not produce those 120+ scores again with a return on Kelly, as history shows he doesn’t have a very high ceiling, but he still scored many tonnes in a row when Coniglio and Kelly were both playing.

    2. Those who ignore history will perish by it.
Sicily, greene. Rockliff at your peril. Honourable mention to fyfe.

  5. Ahhhhhh Yeo, why do you hurt me so?

Not being able to watch any footy for the first weeks makes it really tricky to see if he is worth holding or not.

Does he need to be traded out (T/U if you think so)?

    1. By numbers game, he corrects his disposal efficiency and he’s back to some pretty big scores. I think Gaff coming back will actually help him in the long run.

  6. Pretty happy with my team, no trades yet, none planned unless Hore not named tonight. Thinking Hurn to Lloyd?

T/U: Do it, happier days ahead
T/D: Don’t, unnecessary sideways luxury trade

    1. Think hurn has missed three games in five years. Can go large, and poor ones still 80+.
Why waste a trade. Why did you have him in the girst place….has that changed after 2 rounds?

  7. Whats everyone thought on the AFL just scrapping the bye and having split rounds?
Or is waiting 2 weeks to find out your score too torturing?

    1. Wrong thread or not, it’s something I’ve been thinking for years. They used to do it this way, but then decided that three weeks of less football and misleading ladders was somehow better than two.

      1. I agree with this. The other thing that bothers me is games spread over four days (especially the Thursday – Sunday spread) and with a rolling-lock-out, the round is active / live for longer than it is not every week. Makes it difficult, especially being in on the other side of the planet.

  8. Just going to put this out there, if I had dusty and was completely sold on trading him, I’d definitely consider Taylor Adams.
