The AFL advises the Match Review of the remaining games from Saturday and Sunday of Round Seven have now been completed. The following charges have been laid with three other incidents requiring further explanation.

Charges Laid:

Eric Hipwood, Brisbane Lions, has been charged with Striking Jake Lloyd, Sydney Swans, during the second quarter of Round Seven match between the Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans, played at The Gabba on Saturday May 4.

In summary he can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Careless Conduct with Low Impact and High Contact.

The incident was classified as a $3000 sanction as a first offence. The player can accept a $2000 sanction with an early plea.

Billy Gowers, Western Bulldogs, has been charged with Misconduct against Dylan Grimes, Richmond during the third quarter of the Round Seven match between the Western Bulldogs and Richmond, played at Marvel Stadium on Saturday May 4.

In summary he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Misconduct.

The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction as a first offence. The player can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Jack Martin, Gold Coast Suns, has been charged with Misconduct against Dom Sheed, West Coast Eagles during the third quarter of the Round Seven match between the West Coast Eagles and the Gold Coast SUNS, played at Optus Stadium on Saturday May 4.

In summary he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Misconduct (Pushing player into the path of an Umpire).

The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction as a first offence. The player can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Alex Sexton, Gold Coast Suns, has been charged with Misconduct against Brad Sheppard, West Coast Eagles during the fourth quarter of the Round Seven match between the West Coast Eagles and the Gold Coast Suns, played at Optus Stadium on Saturday May 4.

In summary he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Misconduct.

The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction as a first offence. The player can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Ben Ainsworth, Gold Coast Suns, has been charged with Misconduct against Brad Sheppard, West Coast Eagles during the fourth quarter of the Round Seven match between the West Coast Eagles and the Gold Coast SUNS, played at Optus Stadium on Saturday May 4.

In summary he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Misconduct.

The incident was classified as a $1500 sanction as a first offence. The player can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea.

Gary Ablett, Geelong Cats, has been charged with Striking Dylan Shiel, Essendon during the first quarter of the Round Seven match between the Geelong Cats and Essendon, played at the MCG on Sunday May 5.

In summary he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Intentional Conduct with Low Impact and High Contact.

The incident was classified as a one-match sanction.

Incidents assessed: Contact between West Coast Eagles’ Shannon Hurn and Gold Coast Suns’ Josh Corbett in the first quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The ball is handballed in the direction of player Corbett. Player Hurn moves to intercept the ball. In the process of taking possession of the ball Hurn makes high contact with Corbett. It was the view of the MRO that Hurn was contesting the ball and had no realistic alternative way to contest the ball. No further action was taken.

Contact between North Melbourne’s Cameron Zurhaar and Carlton’s Liam Jones in the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. The ball was kicked into the forward fifty for North Melbourne. Zurhaar moves to mark the ball and simultaneously Jones runs backwards with the flight of the ball. A head-clash occurs between Jones and Zurhaar. It was the view of the MRO that Zurhaar’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.

Contact between North Melbourne’s Tarryn Thomas and Carlton’s Tom Williamson in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. Williamson takes possession of the ball and is immediately tackled by Thomas. It was the view of the MRO that Thomas’ tackle was not unreasonable in these circumstances. No further was taken.

  1. Not great for cats fans (and I don’t think Gaz should have been rubbed out) but could be great for our supercoach teams. Chook may get a reprieve and continue to make us some cash before upgrades.

  2. As a Cats supporter I’d love to see us challenge and win and then rest the great man anyway. What a farce.
