Murphy v Gibbs

by Motts on June 30, 2010

Some will claim it is my Carlton bias but with both players averaging about 109 a game and both valued at $531k I thought it was time to ask you to separate them. Both #1 draft picks, both could be future captains of the club, both capable of almost anything on their day. Who would you take first?

GIBBS for me. Alot more versatile, Murph is good as a goal kicking midfielder but GIBBS is more the HODGE, GODDARD type and will get the nodd for captain before Murph. I also think GIBBS will win a charlie in the next 3 years.

Not a bad argument, Bb. What about their consistency though? Murph rarely has a bad game while Gibbs all too frequently will score under 90.

Agreed. Gibbs is way too inconsistent. I revert to my previous statement of him being in the GODDARD/ HODGE mould. Both these players were also #1 picks and inconsistent in their first 5 years, and took time to be classed in the elite category. Murphy will continue to do what he does best which is get his 30 possies and a couple of goals a game. However I feel GIBBS will become alot more consistent next year and have alot more influence on games than Murph. I would compare the 2 to GODDARD/NDS of this year. NDS is awesome but Goddard influences games more.

Murphy is better than Gibbs, who is improving. They are both very good midfielders, but, I’ll pass on these two & stick with my solid gold midfield group thank you very much.

A more important consideration is the teams for Carlton v Brisbane. Will they be announced this afternoon?

I had both last year and Murphy’s lowest score was 98!! Every other game he cracked the ton, but I don’t think anyone realised this…. so I just kept quiet. Gibbs will be an absolute gun in the coming years, but right now when he gets tagged he scores a bit too low.

He isn’t getting tagged this year, he has become a defensive tagger in certain games ( Melbourne/Green) that why his scores had been inconsistent. IMBFO Gibbs is a far more talented player than Murphs and will become one of the game’s greats in years to come, but his has been given a different role this year, so this one is a toss of the coin.

Motts creates these toss-of-a-coin polls to generate this kind of discussion.

How can you not think Geelong will make the GF?

I just got that feeling that they will knocked out of a prelim final. Any team can beat them on any given night.

True. But at full-strength (or close to it) they will enter any match as favourites.
