As I mentioned yesterday, there are some bargains to be had here but as with most bargains in this comp there is a risk you sign up to if you draft them. More often than not its injury and the two blokes I’ve placed on the field this year both missed significant numbers of games in ’09. As with my backs, the strategy is to take the value gain before trading up to fellas like Clark, Cox (if his foot stays good), Tippett, McIntosh and Kreuzer.
RUCKS
D Hille ($311,300, 73.25) – starred in the comp a couple of years ago but played only 4 games in 2009 before blowing out his knee in the Anzac Day match. Great value at this price.
J Charman ($159,300, 30.00) – probably the biggest risk I’m taking this year after 2 injury riddled years but for $159k….
Emergencies
R Warnock ($132,200) – transferred from Freo last year but didn’t get a game due to injury. With Carlton looking to whack Krooz up front this guy will be shouldering the majority of the ruck load. He’s healthy. Get on him.
A Cordy ($100,200) – didn’t get a game last year but has football smarts and has put on a fair bit of size since being drafted. Rocket has touted him as a potential 200 game player in the past.
The ruck division is where I’m taking my biggest hit in order to acquire The Little Master in the middle. Am I taking too much of a risk?
Tomorrow, the all important forward line.

That’s an interesting theory, buying some cheaper guys and backing them in to rise in value …. i will need to follow a similar track, already running out of $$ now and would rather take a hit in the ruck and ensure the other key positions are filled at the start of the season.
Bring on the FWD’s tomorrow mate.

think you should seriously consider swapping Cordy for Wade Skipper. About the same price (I think) and Skipper much better chance of playing and scoring when playing! Could be just talk, but Brad Sewell mentioned he could play wing and I have a funny feeling that AC has a man crush on the idea of having a mobile ruckman type (like Clarke/Rydar!

Onto it already, PMM. Wrote this post a couple of days ago and then discovered the former WB’s name in the list. With the Hawks need of a decent ruck I think he’s much more likely to get game time.
Closer to the start of the season I’ll re-publish the team. The boys are getting tuned to within an inch of their lives at the moment!

Gotta get over this Bob Warnock thingy you seme to have running. Head not heart Motts. I know you want…in fact need him to play plenty of games and play well to help the Blues to ninth position but the reality is…he is a dud.

Always happy to take criticism, Grimmo, but its very easy to knock, not so easy to come up with something yourself. Who, in your esteemed opinion, would you replace him with at that price?

Daniel Currie from Sydney. With Jolly gone the youngster will get plenty of time in the middle mate.

With Goodes, Mumford and White in front of him I just don’t think he’s going to get enough games. Warnock is a walk up start.

Goodes wont be playing in the ruck. CGF for the big man this year with maybe a run on the ball here and there. The have big wraps on the young Currie. Keep an eye on him this weekend mate. Warnock would struggle to get a start behind the Krooooooz and Laurence Angwin.

i’d downgrade your 4th ruckman to a rookie and save the cash. if you need to swap a ruckman at some stage use a trade, thats what they are there for, thats my theory at least…rather then having 30k extra sitting on the bench

Agree with David Hille. Was the standout ruckman in ’08 and was on track again last year, absolute bargain at that price. I keep thinking back to picking Daniel Bradshaw in a back pocket for $150,000 the year after he did his knee and hoping for a similar return from Hille. If Charman id a huge punt, has to displace Clarke and Luenberger for a spot and is no guarantee of playing, you don’t earn points playing in the QAFL, good bench choice but I’m not sure about having him in your starting 18. My other choice is a bit of a punt, but from all reports he’ll be given more opportunity than most now that Mark Seaby has been traded to Sydney – Nick Natanui. Will play forward and I’m hoping for more consistency from him that he showed in his 10 games last year. as for reserves, I’ve taken Hawthorn’s need for a ruckman and Richmond’s lack of ruck depth into account and picked Wade Skipper and Andrew Browne. Probably won’t set the world on fire but I’m hoping for at least 5 games between 50 – 100 points to make some money and upgrade to someone of better quality.

Looks like Wade Skipper is the man mate …. seems to be a few blokes getting on him, so to speak. Team will be revised AGAIN tomorrow.

Would think Trent West (yes, Geelong bias) would get a few games. Would need either Ottens or Blake, or possibly both to get injured. Whether Geelong bring West in or not is unknown. I think he played 1 game last year, then Mumford came over the top to almost finish 2nd ruckman.
Also interested in Skipper, but is he likely to get a game over Taylor and Renouf? Or is 1 of the 2 injured?

There’s far less value in upgrading rucks – you’d profit far more from other positions. Set and forget…
