My Team Today

by Motts on March 12, 2010

I’ve been handing out a lot of comment about other people’s teams and at the risk of giving the game away to everyone I’m playing in leagues against I’ve decided to publish my boys. For the last month they have been changing daily so I have no doubt that this team will look very different to the one that takes the park at the first bounce of Round 1 but as of today it is:

Backs – Goddard, Enright, Hodge, MacDonald, Malceski, Hunt, Waters (Farmer, Davis)

Mids – Ablett, Murphy, Harvey, McVeigh, Trengove, Martin (Barlow, Bastinac)

Rucks – Petrie, Naitanui (Warnock, Skipper)

Forwards – N Riewoldt, O’Keefe, Giansiracusa, Tippett, Hall, Dangerfield, Ziebell (Rockliff, Podsiadly)

$1,200 in the bank.

OK, let the tearing down begin.

Your Focus is to heavy on DPP. I won to high ranked comps last year and never needed a DPP. Also no Banner & Shuey, this will provide good upgrade $$$. Also where did you pull the expensive O’Keefe from was this your last minute decision on Pav’s poor scores?

DPP’s weren’t needed last year because the rule wasn’t instituted to accomodate them. With the new rule coming in this year I’m putting the pieces in place early.
And yes ROK was a knee jerk reaction to one poor game from Pav. I’ve since swapped them back.

Why harvey in the midfield, he is gettin on and very injury prone. Go for a gun, Prismall is over his injury from last year played 12 games at a avg of 88 , not bad for his first season at essendon. Why no BROWN this guy is going to star this season. Fev is going to have too many problems off field his form will slip. Brown will be the fwd that the mids will be aiming for.

Harvey had an elbow dislocated in a freak accident last year – don’t know if I would call that “injury prone”. I had Prismall a few years back when he was struggling to get a game at the Cats but when he did take the field he always did well. He’s a good option but the knee injury troubles me. I’m holding off on Jono until I see exactly how he works in with Fev. His price dropped markedly mid-season last year making him a bargain for those who timed their purchase right.

My recollection of last year is that Boomer’s only injury was from being smashed into the ground during a tackle and hyper-extending his elbow – an occupational hazard, I’m afraid. This clearly effected his avg (I think they’ve included the 0 game when he got injured) and therefore, this year’s starting price. The previous 4 years, he played 22 and averaged 100+.
Now, advocating for Prismall on the basis of injury-proness is calling the kettle black.
Brown is a slow starter, will be adjusting to change in fwd structure and will be dodging dummies from his new FF. He may also need to be a little more proactive in controlling the big dunce which may distract him.

It would seem we were tapping away on the same wavelength at the same time, Motts – beat me by 6 minutes. It would seem our tendency for close matches may continue this season.

personally i have gotten off the idea of mcveigh and changed him for dangerfield. i still think having two rookies in your midfield is a big risk and won’t score highly, trengrove more so. in the forward line o’keefe seems to pricey at the moment and either scores a lot or nothing. and gia is a risk but you could look like a genius. still aren’t on the hall bandwagon, i’m just not feeling it. i say have either skipper or warnock, not both, save the cash as it looks like you need some in the bank. otherwise i reckon you’ve nailed it and with ablett who knows! i rate it a 9 out of 10

Thanks tap. Apparently McVeigh is looking great on the training track and has something to prove I reckon. 2 rooks in the midfield is a risk but an acceptable one for me. Who they are at the end of the day will come down to who gets named in R1. Take your point re ROK – have already swapped him back for Pav.

Supercoach Superstar March 12, 2010 at 11:57 pm

Given i have given Motts the critique of a century i figured that you deserved one too Tappy…………
Supercoach Superstar rating 8.5-9/10…
Backs:
Almost great- Waite is the problem. BIG risk and by all reports was horrendous tonight. Back/Fwd/Back/Fwd. Given the blues have a leaking defence and a much less potent fwd line this year he will be a Mr fixit which i think will be to his detriment. Think Hodge looks better back there. I think Motts should adopt your approach and have Waters on the bench.
Mids:
Again Harvey is another injury risk and see comments in Motts review re rotations. Reckon also you can do better than having Dangerfield in the middle given the plethora of talent and scoring options in the mids.
Rucks:
Hille- one of the big questions of 2010. Risk = reward but can also lead to catastophic failure. Nic Nat is the other option.
Fwds:
Some big coin there that perhaps could have been better used in the mids. Pav is interesting, is he on the same decline that we saw with Tredders a few years ago? Medhurst will be hit or miss. Swap out Gumby for Posiadly and use the extra coin as discussed above.

Petrie missing 2 games is a penalty of 5ppg over the year assuming your coverage scores 50ppg and he averages 90ppg. It doesn’t look like much, but 2 games is a big penalty.

Motts,
A chance to return fire………your team is solid however there seem to be a few glaring issues (and i’m assuming as you have mentioned you are aiming at the grand prize rather than league glory)
Supercoach Superstar rating- 7.5-8/10 and here’s why………………..
Backs:
With Malceski and Hunt still carrying some risk returning from injury you seem light on for back up. Then you have Waters starting??? Davis probably won’t make the crows round 1 team and Farmer is still a bit of an unknown. With Malceski pulling out of tonights nab challenge match with Hammy tightness it highlights potential problems for you there if the especially fragile Waters goes down….
Mids:
Harvey is pushing the age barrier and whilst i love him he is a risk of being injured. Also he may end up spending less time on the ball as North start to introduce more young recruits through the middle. Murphy is still blowing out cobwebs after a minimal pre-season and whilst he may score ok, I’m not convinced Mcveigh will be a heavy scoring mid. So it begs the question- in the most important section of your team do you really have the capability to consistently score heavily enough???
Rucks:
No problems seen there….
Fwds:
Certainly is solid but will it consistently score well? O’keefe is a notorious slow starter. Gia is a gamble at that price.
if you want the big dollars then you need the big scores consistently- 2200-2400. Good effort but i think there’s room for improvement Mottsybaby!
(Also think you are toying with us and that is not your real team)

Didn’t realise Malceski missed yesterday’s game. That affects my thinking on him. Waters is a cash cow but to increase in price he’s going to have to get played. Will leave that decision til later but am already considering de-Abletting and am eyeing off Gram. You make a good point about the North kids affecting Boomer’s numbers. Will re-consider him. Agreed about Murphy. Got to have a Carlton player in the midfield though so it may end up being Gibbs. McVeigh is another cash cow – Essendon have a relatively easy start to the year so points will be on offer for him. ROK = gone. Gia is a gamble but gee he’s been playing well so far this year.As I said yesterday, its a work in progress. I’m grateful to all that have provided comment and given me food for thought. Will re-post the boys before the season proper.

Yes, just found out about Malceski myself – gone! I’m not taking anyone who smells remotely of injury.
I agree with Gibbs over Murphy. I never seem to be able to fit the former into my teams, only to suffer pain as he accumulates consistently good scores.
Also agree on Gia.

thanks super star for the critique. i dont like podsiadly at all. much rather stick with gumby who surely must be ready to play. i believe dangerfield spend plenty of time in the midfield and will go up. i had mcveigh since the start but got off the bandwagon although im a bombers man. so im sticking with hille all the way. harvey at his price will rise i’d reckon. as for pavlich, his consistent and if he gets 100 every week i’ll be happy. and finally medhurst, his almost out the door on my team. just not sure who to take yet. thanks again SS

I must be one of the few who is not on the Dangerfield bandwagon. I think he butchers the ball too much to be a big scorer. I also think there is better cash cows out there for around that price.

OK, here’s my thoughts on your team Motts. I won’t comment on your emergencies, because I’m sure they’ll be changeable right up to the 1st round selections.

Backs – 1st 4 are all very reliable. Personally think Goddard is a bit overpriced, however, half time in the gf, he’s racking the possies up, so I may need a re-think. Agree with a comment earlier, Hunt Malceski and Waters is dicey waters for me. 7/10

Mids – Again, 1st 3 are super but then it drops off pretty fast. I’m all for making the cash in the middle this year with rookies. It’ll either be buckets or roses. 7/10

Rucks – Good choices there. Both have the potential not only to make money, but also consistantly score well. May be lacking someone of genuine quality. I had Pettrie, found out he was out for the 1st 2 weeks, swapped him for Jolly. Amazingly, nearly all of Jolly’s dull scores were at the SCG. Big things loom for him this year. 7/10

Frwrds – By far your strongest area of the ground. You’ve got potentially 4 100+ gamers a week. I have my doubts about Rod D, but should at the very least, make some cash. Gia is being pumped up, I’m not completely sold on him, but hey, should go ok. 9/10

Overall – 7.5/10. Prob a bit of a harsh score. I guess you’ve got 10-11 regular 100+ point scorers, with the others chipping in here and there. But hey, what do I know, I live i Spain.

Impressive. Will Palmer play round 1? Check injuryupdate.com.au.

Don’t know about Maguire and Waters being on the field at the same time but looking at your midfield and forward lines I can understand why you’ve done it. Your backs reserves are questionable but other than that, it looks solid to me.
