Myth-Smiters: Stefan With(Out) Archie

Written by Father Dougal on March 24 2017

Today’s Myth: I hear that Stefan Martin does not score as well when Archie Smith is also playing. Easy to check; we just look at Martin’s average with and without Smith playing with him.

  Martin &
Martin

Round Friend Alone Smith
1 95
2 112
3 106
4 63
5 69
6 81
7 119
8 84
9 48
10 40
11 69
12 56
13 142
14 105
15
16 92
17 72
18 162
19 96
20 90
21 70 52
22 111
23 98
70.0 90.7

Oh come ON!  One match! Yes, in the one match they both played, Martin had a lower average than the rest of the season. That is, however, not enough data to reach a meaningful conclusion. The data is not ripe. It is immature. Even Cardinal Pell would just be sweeping this data under the rug!

Conclusion: Inconclusive! Not enough data.

  1. You are spot on FD: One match does not a theory make, but he was rubbish when he shared with Trent West last season as well.

To be fair to Stef and Goldy, both had interrupted seasons in 2016 so it is difficult to use their 2016 stats to predict 2017.

    1. just on that – West played in rounds 9-12 last year. You can see for yourself the effect that had on Martin’s scoring….
I wouldn’t write off Stef just yet, he was a beast for the 18 months before that.
