  1. I learn t that even some Essendon supporters hate essendon right now. I understand that they could have taken a bus like StKilda but with the 6 day turnaround and with the common people not knowing anything about the recovery strategies of the professional athlete, I can’t fault the bombers for taking the opportunity. In saying that I too was a little disappointed cos I am a country boy too.

  4. I went to the Pies v Dees game and learnt the following:
    – NAB cup performances can be misleading..
Haven’t been to a preseason game before but it wasn’t anywhere as intense as I thought. Those pushing for it to be scrapped have a good argument.

The premiums seemed to be going at 70%, the fringe players were trying their hardest to push into the starting 22 and obviously the rookies were going flat out.

Watched a few guys closely, namely Magner, who is a lock to be upgraded before round 1. I didn’t realise his possie count until after the game but the guy just knows where to run. He will continue to get touches just by getting in the right positions. (and he is a tank!)

Pendlebury, Swan and Thomas rack them up without trying. Out of the 3 I think Thomas was the most interested but you won’t go wrong with Pendlebury or Swan. The question is which one and will the pies look to rest more guys throughout the season.

Silvia can play, no doubt. He again wasn’t fully committed to the game but he knows how to get it. The only problem was every time I looked at him I wondered, when will be the next time he does something stupid!

Shaw is a lock. Now I just prey he doesn’t do a Heath Shaw…

Sidebottom only played a half but did okay. Still not convinced he will take the next step this year though.

Overall its hard to gauge because there were no real tags, players playing well out of position (Pendlebury full forward start of last qtr) and players racked up numbers on sub standard opponents (Dunn on McNamara)

On the McNamara situation I think its time to stop with the experimenting. (Don’t get me started on the rugby guys!) Even Clark is only okay. When you see guys from the minor leagues (VFL, WAFL etc) and what they have achieved in the past few years you wonder why clubs are wasting their time trying to find the next Jim Stynes. Our game is unique and unlike any other game in the world. While you don’t need to have played it since age 5, a good understanding and basic skill level is a must. There are too many guys running around at lower levels that should be given a go before some American who sends in a video tape. Just my opinion…

  6. For those people going down the 1-0-3 ruck strategy, are you any further convinced that Giles can do the job after the weekend?

  7. After reading much about this weekends games both from this website and others, i think i have many more questions than answers as to what form my final side may take. Still, it’s two and a half weeks yet til lockout so i’ve got planety of time i s’pose.

Some of the names i am reconsidering (in a positive): Cox, Shaw, Dangerfield, Hargrave, Lake, Porplyzia, Broughton, Bower, plus a hole host of rookies
Some of the names i am reconsidering (in a negative): Clarke, Giles/Stephensen (can either of them step up to R2 for the first 8-10 rnds??), plus a whole host of rookies

Hoping to get up the highway to North v Doggies this Sunday in Nth Ballarat to investigate on a few.

  8. I’ve learned that the final hour before lockout is going to test the supercoach servers massively.

    Also:
Lake and/or Clarke in the risk/reward spot in the back line.
    Hogan for M6 POD
    Neale over J Mac/Mitchell
Porplyzia for the risk/reward spot in the forward line.

Fyfe is locked in but Magner needs the elevation sooner rather than later to be a total lock.

Was happy with a ‘berger/McIntosh ruck combo up until the weekend. Might well be better served going with Cox after all.

Redden is doing well to knock Orren out of the R4 spot but round 1 teams will determine their fate.

Boomer is probably a safe bet even at his age. Goodes as well… would like him to play this week though. Same for Adcock and Deledio.

I guess the big question is do we pick rookies according to potential or rookies that will play in the first round? Relton Roberts comes to mind as a Round 1 starter that went nowhere while Podsiadly was the talk of the town but didn’t surface until round 3.
