The last set of rookies to take a look at are the Mids, and they were the toughest. I need to mention I have excluded DPP’s from this list and they are covered in the other reviews. I will also mention that Manger would be on the primary list, but an injury to his finger kept him off despite likely being available for round 1.
- Stephen Coniglio GWS $191k – Coniglio was taken at Pick 2 by GWS (essentially number 1 midfielder drafted) and is rated very highly by the footy fraternity having played for Swan Districts in the WAFL for two years. He is worth a bit of extra cash, but those looking to sure-up their midfield rookies should look no further. Barring injury, it seems he will be a certain regular for the Giants and if NAB Cup stats mean anything, then get-on-board.
- Clay Smith WBD $116k – Your parents decided they wanted to breed you tough when they went with ‘Clay’ as your fist name, and in this instance it seems to have worked. Clay was taken as Pick 17 by the Doggies having played for the Gippsland Power.
- Anthony Miles GWS $113k – Miles is a 20yo who knows how to find the footy. He played 2010 in the national U/18 championships and TAC Cup, and then spent 2011 in the NEAFL for the Giants.
- Simon Hogan Geelong $162k – A proven player who had to confront some demons last season. I understand he’s back on the rails, and back at a rookie price. The Cats have him pegged to pick up Lingy’s tagging role which inherently takes a player to the ball if following the opposition’s number 1 midfielder. He has been looking good during the NAB Cup and at this price I’d suggest you pretend he’s a mature age rookie who’s been playing senior football, then pretend you’ve never heard of him and he almost selects himself.
- Chad Wingard PA $171k – Wingard was taken at Pick 6 from Sturt in the SANFL with PA’s first pick which was in-fact the first non-GWS pick. Wingard maintained solid performances throughout the NAB Cup and Ports list (which make me shake my head) means if he is really any good, he’ll be playing a lot.
There are plenty of other Rookies worth a punt, and at the end of the day the NAB Cup is a poor guide at best, so any of these may also be the next Michael Barlow: James Magner (Melb $94k), Lachlan Neale (Fremantle $106k), James Macdonald (GWS $106k), Anthony Morribito (Fremantle $168k), Stephen Clifton (GWS $130k), Sam Gibson (North $94k), Harry Cunningham (Sydney $94k), Thomas Ledger (StKilda $113k), Dylan Shiel (GWS $113k)

With all due respect, I tend to disagree. The bandaid is off, Magner should still be included. Great work as always otherwise.
I don’t rate Clay Smith that much his disposal efficency is s#it which will mean he’ll be in and out of the doggies team. Plus he has major competition with Libba and Wallis who play similar roles. For DT maybe but not SC.
I’ve went with Cunningham mainly due to the fact I cant afford anyone else.
How you you guys rates his chances of a regular gig?
Josh Caddy, just a tad over the $200,000 mark, what are people’s thoughts on him?
Throw Koby Stevens, Jesse Stringer & Hoskin-Elliot in the mix as well
I also have spots available in SC league 673683 and DT league 506540 for those who had a high ranking last year (preferably top 1000), have a spare league and want some good competition!
Hey guys what are your thoughts on Kyal Horsley? Havn’t seen his name mentioned much..
D. smith would have to be the Pick of the (rookie mids) bunch . Smith has averaged 82 SC points in the nab cup , plus having a mid /fwd link he would have to be the most popular rookie picks this year .

Luke brown – crows, 19yrs, 79 kilos, and unless I’m blind, didn’t play any NAB cup games…
no thanks.
What about Clifton from gws or was he suppossed to be A secret.
I’m a tomlinson (Def/fwd) man, so to speak, but budget and GWS overload prevents me. Taking a punt on baguely if he is named, but other than that it’s draw straws time on a sole def rook……
I got 6 but am a bit concerned with their possible revolving selection door
Lachie Neale seems to have slipped under most peoples radar. Might miss round 1 but should be ready to go after that. Thoughts?
Everyone’s thoughts on Koby Stevens? I like the kid, especially at 135k
Last spot for Mid/Forward rookie:
Alex Sexton Thumbs up
Sam Kerridge Thumbs down
Cheers
Luke Parker (Swans) or Coniglio? Presently i have Parker, real good scores in the NAB cup. Good call?
