Panic Trading

Written by Big Sexy on May 16 2011

Who of you have fallen victim to what I like to call ‘Panic Trading’, and by this I mean you spend your whole week mulling over what trades you will make with more and more uncertainty creeping in. Then, come Thursday night, teams are named and your best layed plans go out the window.

Examples: Crap, no bench cover: Trade!….. Crap, I can afford for him to be on the field: Trade!…. Crap, crap, crap…… that wasn’t meant to happen:  Trade!

I made my first panic trades of the year on Friday night, after only having used 3 trades for the season I was pretty happy. Then come Thursday night Harris was out, Higgins was out (again), Blues had a bye (Duigan, Gibbs and Curnow for me), Toy dropped….. I would have have McKernan on the field with no bench cover, and Matthew Wright for the Crows on the feild who I only brought into my team to make a few bucks then go out, and have no bench cover.

So, I broke my Rule number 1: I traded in Issac Smith after one game for Curnow, because I didn’t want Wright on the field.
I also broke rule number 2: I traded Otten for Newman knowing Newman would likely drop in price again next next week to be a real bargain.

Waiting one more week for both would have allowed me to ensure Smith gets his third game, and allow Newman to drop another 20k.

But no, premature adjudication kick in, and I did both trades…. Newman had a stinking 67, despite his pre-game average over 100. Then to top it off, the guy I didn’t want on the field; Wright plays a blinder and scores 116… the best of all sub 200k rookies.

Now I’m not disappointed with Wrights 116….. just me struggling to hold my cool.

We’ve all done it (I think)….. what are your panic trades so far this season?…. if none this season, then you are sure to have a classic from your past.

  2. BS. Exactly how my last week panned out.

Thursday night and all my week’s work is out the window

With GCS having the bye this week, we’re all hoping we can get our full teams out on the park for ONCE

  3. My panic trade was getting rid of Josh Kennedy after round 2…He had two scores of around the 50 mark and I thought what a bad move. His average since those two games is about 120 I reckon

  6. Did a stupid trade early in the season when I saw Lower out of the Freo side, so I traded him for R. Tarrant cos he was on the bubble. Tarrant scores a 17 or something that round then the next week Tarrant gets dropped and Lower scores a ton 🙁 , beat that fellas.

  7. RD 6 got so scared by the prospect of copping one donut dumped Stevie J for Dudak.

Since then Duds has dropped another $73k and generously given my a huge 110 from 3 rounds (one bye) while Stevie J has only played one of three but risen 18k and cranked out 136 on the weekend.

Probably not as dire as some but the fact that I can’t stand Didak and love Stevie J makes it that much harder to cop.

  8. Unfortunately I also jumped on Newman for Grimes. I had no bench cover and I didn’t want Mckernan on the field so I got rid of Grimes planning to get rid of him next week and Newman goes out and scores a 67 -.-

  9. traded out JRoo after his dismal scoring run between rounds 2-4 and brought in Delicious Cyril . Since then JRoo has pumped out a couple of tons (although settled down abit now) and Cyril is permanently injured and has yet to score over 80 for me 🙁 A complete waste of a trade.

  10. I dont consider it panic trading, the way i see it is every year there are 2 sets of rookies, the cash cows, rookies who start from game 1 or in the early round who you can cash in on around about round 9-12. Then comes the 2nd round of rookies who will most likely be your cover for the rest of the year. These players are your down grade targets ie smith puopolo and jacobs…. you arent looking to trade them out unless they make you a bucket load of cash.

No need to panic, coming into the finals ill be happy if i have 6-10 trades left.

  11. Got Polec in while he was on a bubble for 160k (super expensive for a rookie).

Gets 18 that round and only a 20k price rise, then gets dropped! Haven’t seen him since. Not sure what to do with him now.

  12. Last year traded in Barlow and he broke his leg that round.

This year haven’t done too much wrong apart my team sucking from the very start and have been playing catch up ever since. Goddard and Roo have hurt me.

  13. Ahhh.

Thinking of trading Petrie in the next few weeks.

    Sandilands thumbs up.
Mumford (as a POD) thumbs down.

    Cheers lads.

  14. Talking last year here, but remember the Seaby bandwagon!? Anyone who jumped on it would have! Did Mitch Clark > Seaby before R3 2010 after Seaby had exceeded expectations to score an 82 and 135 and was only priced $250,000 odd from memory. Buy him in and he gets an 10-12 week injury a minute into the game to score 3 points. In the same round I use the cash from Seaby to make an upgrade in my forwards to J.Brown who was smashing it (130, 171)! Only for him to do a Hodge and play poorly with a niggly injury until R11 to only score 2 tons in that time, then get surgery. Not only that, but I captained Nick Reiwoldt for him to do his hammy for a 25. Round 3 2010 still plagues my nightmares. Winner?

  15. Been doing some math and need Swan to drop $18,800 this week in order to pick him up next week. He has a B/E of 176. Would be a high chance he would drop this amount any other week. However, Collingwood are versing Adelaide at the ‘G.
Think he’ll drop enough for me?

After all the talk on this site about Gibbs pulled out 2 massive scores & Adcock did nothing. Then Round 3 onwards Gibbs turns into a Tagger & Adcock the go to player/captain!!!!

  19. last round there was like 1 minute left till lockout an I was going to cop a donut in backline so I posted on here to get Jacobs in for curbow so I cab change him with Gibbs and then I won’t cop a donut. and then I gor 1 thumbs up so I did it with about 2 seconds remaining an then it locked out so I couldn’t even put Jacobs in the backline an on the field. so I ended up coping the zero that I was going to get anyway an then another one on hurley 🙁

  21. I think this week is the week to downgrade with both trades with Tom lynch, Puopolo, Isaac smith, and lots more rookies on the bubble and cash cows getting to their max price IMO

  22. Traded out Krakwhore after his pathetic scores and looked like he was on extented bench and not getting a game. Pulls out 126. Same weekend traded out Yarran, who I was loving – scoring well and i barrack for carlton, who was under an injury cloud and actually was a late withdrawel, so looked like okay trade. Has come back and scored another 100+. Really wish I held on to him cause he is looking awesome. Can I trade him back in?? 🙂

In fact pretty much most people I trade out go on and score massive that weekend. Krak, Matera and Libba all scored 100+ as soon as i traded them out!

  23. My friend’s team is in total disarray and still has Hayes as Captain. I told him to trade him out and use the extra money to fill gaps in his backline, but upon careful consideration, he traded out Gibbs instead! He looked totally shattered when I told him that the reason Gibbs wasn’t playing was because Carlton had the bye and he’d be back next week, unlike Hayes!!!

  24. Traded out Curnow for Smith & Savage for Mitchell. Savage pulls out a blinder and Mitchell gets tagged and scores low. Was playing ladder leader so tried to get an edge but it didn’twork. I lost. Wanted Pendlebury, but was $4K short, Had I waited, I would have won, plus could have brought Pendlebury this week. 🙁 :-/

  25. I’ve lost my mind 3 times this year :
    1. Traded GAJ out after his 1st game- was unhappy with his 95! Thought somebody who cost me $600k + should be pumping out 120’s from the get go…
    2. Traded out J.Roo after his concussion donut…
    3. Traded out Selwood after HIS concussion…

I reckon I may have had concussion- some kind of recurring ‘panic-trade-lockout-knock-to-the-head’…

Am thinking of getting GAJ back in the side. WISH I still had J.Roo in the side,(traded him for Where’s Higgins?), & traded Selwood for Watson, which is hurting right about now!

  26. As a painful exercise, I realised that the team I have now could’ve been the team I started with. (going by the season’s starting prices). Except I would’ve saved myself 10 trades! What if I could start again….

So I did! I resurrected an old e-mail address and put my ‘new’ old team in. It still fitted into the $10mil salary cap going on current prices, (with a couple of tweaks). Nice to have all the boys on the bubble too…Puopolo, Hibberd, Jacobs, Isaac Smith, Lynch, Siposs, Pedersen…I can put them all in! And now I have 24 trades to swap/& reswap non playing premiums every week!

It’s all pretty pointless- there’s no league games or chance of overall win. But I found it fun and somewhat cathartic. The Benefit of Hindsight league code is 954958. Come join me! See if your hindsight is better than mine!
