Player Spotlight – Tim Kelly

Written by Motts on February 5 2020

Tim Kelly (Mid, $561,800, 103 BE)

Tim Kelly burst onto the scene in R1, 2018 with a 118 against Melbourne and hasn’t looked back since.

Over the course of 2 seasons he’s never missed a game averaging 93.2 in his debut season and 103.5 last year.

His ceiling is reasonably high: in year 1 he scored 155 against Freo and in year 2 backed it up with a 162 against North but admittedly those games are few and far between.

Last year he was a lock for many teams with M/F DPP status. This year he’s a mid only and the big question is: how will he perform in a new team after being traded from Geelong to West Coast in the offseason?

The West Coast midfield boasts a lot of firepower: Gaff, Yeo, Shuey, Sheed and Redden are all proven performers.

Given all of that, does TK represent good value at his current price?

Kelly in 2020?

  1. need another option: will probably score around the same (i.e. his price is about right), but that will be too low for a top 8 mid spot and thus makes him irrelevant

  2. Running a 6 premo midfield atm, so I’ve got Kelly at M6. Granted I’m obviously biased, but the 10.2 average increase between his first and second season is what’s sold me on him – would be starting him irrespective of club tbh.

Confident he can now step it another level at West Coast with defensive cover from Yeo and Shuey, Hutchings handing the opposing #1 MID and good supply from Gaff.

Think the inconsistency he experienced last year can be attributed to the Cats midfield structure, too many cooks in the kitchen and heaps of rotations. From what I’ve read, we’re [West Coast] clearly structuring things around Kelly being the #1 inside MID- got a members’ email the other day about how Dom Sheed’s now going to be playing up forward.

We gave away the farm for him, hoping he repays the faith and kills it!

    1. Interesting info GD! Thanks for that! Hmmmm will have to re-think maybe – I had him down with just too many premium mids at the Eagles.

I really rate him and think he just oozes class. Has that rare ability to make it look like he has more time than everyone else – it’s going to be a tough call … depending on what happens with Gawn he’s a maybe for me – have Oliver at M5 and Rowell at 6 .. hmmmm

  3. I had Kelly a week ago then analysed data and am actually now sold on Yeo instead as feel he will outscore Kelly given injury free preseason and how he finished year .
Have Rowell at mid 6 as feel there are many mid rookies available .

    1. Yeah – that’s the key I think isn’t it?
In terms of ‘real’ footy, for the Eagles, it’s just a massive bonus for them to have that many mids – the question for us though then becomes will it / can it translate into good SC scoring????

Time will tell and it / he will fall into that luck factor percentage for SC!!

  4. I’m all over Kelly this season…….finished 4th in the Brownlow in just his 2nd season of AFL. After having read up on his private situation, I think we’ll see the best of him back in Perth. Tipping him to make the leap into the Top10 MIDs…….

  5. Looking at the Brownlow votes Kelly increased his tally from 13 to 24 votes in his two seasons at Geelong, very impressive as votes tend to align with SC scoring.

He is a goal kicking midfielder having averaged a goal per game in both seasons. The Eagles do not have a goal kicking midfielder the closest being Yeo who has kicked 25 over the last two seasons.

Someone loses their spot in the midfield to accommodate Kelly and I think it may be Hutchings with Yeo taking up a more defensive role whist also being damaging at centre bounces.

Kelly was able spend 84% TOG in both seasons at the Cats and can see the Eagles midfield being very the the most damaging should a full season be offered by Natanui.

Would say a minimum 115 is the benchmark from Kelly in season 2020 if he has settled down to home life in WA.
