Players To Avoid In 2020

Written by Schwarzwalder on July 24 2019

Wighty asked the question in the Polling Station and we’re kinda curious to see the answers………

Wighty has already got Josh Kelly on his list of ‘players to avoid’ for the next season due to his history of injuries.

Who are you planning on giving a miss in 2020?  And for what reason/s?

  1. Issac Heeney such a tease for the last two seasons as he isn’t able to be trusted in terms of playing position. Can’t see me picking him next season unless heaps of fwds lose DPP

Honourable mention to Matt Crouch not quite an avoid but needs 40 disposals in order to score 120+

    1. Depends on Heeney’s status. If he’s fwd he might get a lock in but if he’s just a mid then heck no.

    2. I swear every time Heeney gets tackled or dives into a pack he gets up limping and grimacing after being on 80 at halftime. I don’t think I can go through this again.

  2. Matt Crouch. Never again.

Excruciating watching him rack up 35 touches for 87 SC. So happy I sideways’d him earlier in the season.

  3. This is a safe space for all those that fell again for Tom Rockliff’s alluring ways. Please, the first step is to admit you’ve got a problem.

  4. Josh Kelly averages 125 when fit and Heeney upwards of 105. Heeney will settle into an outside mid role eventually and Kelly will play 20-22 games. Writing them off because of frustration is simply folly. Rockliff for example, is a noted burn man, Walters too. I’d never consider them given their age and injury history. Matt Crouch is an interesting one, I’ve been an owner for 3 years now and just watching him it seems that he’s always the second handball receiver. This is the worst thing in Supercoach as winning a handball get, effective handball is plus 8. Say Sloane gets this, he handballs to crouch who handballs to Brad on the outside. Matt gets plus 2 for an effective uncontested handball, and Brad plus 2-6 given the effectiveness of the kick. In 2017 Matt was more hungry and seemed to win more of the ball that Sloane seems to win. The type that scores big. I don’t doubt he will get back to that eventually and when he does he will average 130-160. Matt Crouch can average 160. Consistent 40 possession games at 75% with many ground ball gets and a few added tackles, his 105s soon become 140-160. Plus, given his consistency he won’t chuck in a bad game and drop his average like Titch did. I repeat, Matt Crouch at 23 will become the greatest supercoach player of all time eventually, however I will not be starting him in 2020.

Close, but Sloane would actually get 6 points (4.5 for the ground-ball get, 1.5 for the effective handball), Matt would get 3 (1.5 for handball receive, 1.5 for an effective handball), and Brad would either get 1.5 or 5.5, depending on whether or not the kick was effective (the difference between getting 0 and 4 points).

    2. RB, not quite sure why you say Kelly will play 20-22 next year…22 is the max anyone can play Last year, he only played 15, and this year, he will be lucky to match that…still needs three more. He has the equal second highest average this year, but is not even on the first page when it comes to total points……some 500-600 behind the leaders, and as we all know, its pts that do the job in sc, not averages.

        1. Don’t throw me into this, i’m steering clear of the Kelly and Whitfield types that play 15ish games a season.

          1. I’m pretty sure I had these covered in the early season articles Average v Total points – will roll them out after this round to see how they stacked up, this far ( but yes despite those articles I still had Kelly in my team)

          2. Roo Bloke, Whitfield has had a corky and a broken bone. Hardly ‘injury prone’. If he is def eligible next year he’s the lockiest of locks.

            1. At least one of those contact injuries happened in a game where the opposition (Gold Coast) was targeting him all day. If this becomes a regular occurrence, he could cop even more contact injuries.

    3. Heeney is currently the 8th best scoring forward based on total points.
Some of the guys above him aren’t going to be forwards next year and yes some people below him will jump up next year but… if he has low ownership, then he is going in my team.

      1. This is correct. I fearlessly predict that all the forwards ahead of him this year, except for Walters and maybe Marshall, to lose their forward status next season.

Heeney is very much a viable forward option in 2020, in my admittedly biased opinion!

          1. I can justify most of them myself, I started with Hurn this year and I know for a fact next season he wont be in my side, main factor being age. not a fan of picking up players once they pass that 32ish barrier. Feel like there will be better options next season.

Mundy is very hit and miss as we have seen this season so I would avoid him completely, he will be 35 next season. If kelly & boak are moved as primary midfielders and no longer have the fwd status, I doubt many people will pick them up.

On the otherhand Dangerfield will be a lock yet again, as long as he stays as a fwd. Brad Crouch & Sloane I cant justify. Feel both have been good options this season especially Crouch. Love having him sitting at M8 averaging me 100 odd.

I may be wrong and change my mind but thats just my view on how im overseeing things right now…

  5. 1.Harris Andrews
    2. Dustin Martin
    3.Alex Witherden
    4 Lachie Whitfield
Probably in that order, Andrews is too inconsistent, Martin is no longer in the best 6-10, Witherden had a good first year and that was it, Lachie is in the same bracket as Fyfe , injury prone.

    1. I think that’s a bit harsh on Whitfield. He did struggle with injuries this year but we’ll have to see if it’s a recurring problem (like it is for Fyfe).

  6. Any KPP FWD

    Any GWS player until either:
    HULC is gone and/or
They decide to better inform the media on injuries and timelines.

PS HULC (hate you Leon …) I want this to stick!! 😉

  7. From this year

Crouch Bros, Cameron, Kelly and Cogs

Crouch bros & Cogs usually need to be very clean and rack up touches to get a sub decent score.

Kelly becoming Rockliff MK2 very injury prone can’t rely on his body sadly =[

Cameron way to inconsistent in my team =[

    1. Defidenly he burnt me & a lot of others last season. If he was to move into the mids which I feel he will in 2-3 years then he COULD average 95-105 but he does go missing in games

      1. The issue is that Melbourne’s midfield is pretty set (Oliver, Harmes, Jones, Viney, Brayshaw etc), and that Petracca is too valuable as a forward.

  8. Not so much players to avoid for the whole year, more a reminder not to start players that had surgery or missed a large portion of the pre season.

I started Oliver over Neale and that was a disaster for the first 6 weeks.

If your going to pay full price for anyone to start the season…
Make sure they have a reasonable injury history a proven scoring history, and a great pre season.

I also wouldn’t write off “anyone” at this early stage.

Yep J kelly is injury prone, but if he somehow starts the year at sub $550k, now thats a risk I’m willing to take.

For me it comes down to price point and what I think they could potentially score for the season.

I don’t want to jinx him but Brad crouch was avoided by many as his injury history was terrible. He has now gone on to play every game and possibly been the best midpricer this year.

I guess what I’m trying to say is.. If a player has youth on their side, and a very attractive price point. It maybe worth the risk in starting them even with an injury filled past.

I still won’t be starting Rocky ever again.

  9. Harmes and Viney are the reasons for Brayshaw’s fall.
Would love to know if there is any stats to cross reference Brayshaw to Harmes/Viney absenteeism.
