  1. I personally have Dusty & Whitfield as promos with Smith & Steven in there for now as mid pricers hoping that Smith will return to a premium but if not that’s fine.

Is this the way most of us are leaning if not share your fwds. Let’s work out what is the best stategy for what is a weak year for FWD options.

    1. I still believe Smith is a huge trap if people are expecting him get back to a 100 average. The year he came to the Dons and averaged just under 100, he played like 80% midfield. Now after a year off, and with Shiel taking that midfield spot, Smith will most likely get relegated to the forward line. I think he’ll be lucky to average 90 this year.

  2. Not, sure but heading towards dusty(durability) and the GOAT.
They recently said Stevens will play fwd for a while to get fit, Duncan and selwood still on modified programs. And sure they have kids to play in the mids, but it’s his last season, last chance for a premiership, I think he’ll run through there enough to ave 100+.
I was trying to sell people on boak last year but ended up instead not selecting him myself. While it’s a different matter, I have a good feeling about gaj.

  3. Interestingly, I just read that Ablett only scored 9 points fewer than Dusty last year and is 30k cheaper. He also played 21 games. Given no Kelly, no Selwood, Steven will be predominantly forward, Danger and Gaz may get a lot of mid time.

    1. Think if you pick Gaz you will need to be prepared to trade him at some point – either due to injury or general rest.

Other than that I still like the Gaz option because of his skills. The only reasons im not picking him is because his highest possession game last year was 28 touches, he had seven games in or below the 60s last year which is unacceptable for any premium, and he would have to defy the almost proven truth that age-decline. He is nearly 36 after all.

      1. That’s what everyone said last year yet he played 21 out of 22 games. He finished off the year with good numbers too, so I think he will make it through ok. Any problems and I can cross trade for Dusty who always starts slow….M

  4. Slim pickings indeed. Not a lot after Dusty and Whitfield (beside Heeney, but he just broke his thumb). I really don’t trust many popular midpricers Fwds either (Smith – role had changed before his injury last year; Steven – past it I think, and just done a calf; Dawson – too versatile which I fear will mean Horse moves him around a lot).

Allsaints mentioned in the Richmond article comments that he was considering Tom Lynch, and it made me think that the forward line is probably the best position to go a midpricer POD if there is a lack of rookies come rd 1.

I’d always prefer a playing rookie, and am generally not an advocate of a midpricers unless you can make a really solid case that they will significantly increase their output to become a) a keeper or b) make as much cash as a rookie would. But if you had to start a midpricer for structural reasons/lack of enticing rookies, then I can see merit in starting a POD.

If they start well you’re obviously ahead of the pack in terms of scoring, and if they misfire you just sideways them to one going well, or downgrade to the inevitable rookie that you missed. Admittedly there is an added element of risk here, but just some food for though given that I keep seeing the same midpricers Fwds in most teams.

Im thinking along the lines of someone like Darcy Parish, Chayce Jones, Brett Bewley, Josh Kennedy (WCE), etc. Obviously PS will shine a light one role, scoring power, fitness etc, but I think there are a lot of options that are just as good as the popular midpricers.

Just a side note: it would be hugely speculative and banking on a him vastly improving his consistency, but I would love to be able to take advantage of Powell-Peppers DPP this year. I reckon at some stage in his career he will average 95ish, just not sure if it’ll be this year. Same deal with LDU from North. Definitely not ballsy enough to start either though.

  5. Everyone’s thoughts on Darcy Fogarty? Looked pretty solid at the end of last year and is looking likely to play in the 22 unless hamstring is worse than they are saying.

    1. Yea I reckon he will play all 22 Becc. There has even been talk of Walker playing wing, so I think his JS is quite high. The only issue for me would be his scoring potential, his career highest score was 81, and apart from a 78 everything else has been 60’s or below. I’d be confident that he would increase his ceiling, but as a key fwd erratic scoring would likely remain a nuisance for cash generation. At 280k I’d have though you’d need him to average at least 85 in order to make enough money to justify the selection.

On the flipside, if you could get a few tons in a row out of him, which is conceivable given the crows favourable early draw, he could earn some quick money. The likelihood of him being a keeper though are next to nil I would’ve thought.

      1. Thanks. Was just considering as a stepping stone and something a little different as most forward lines are likely to look similar.

  6. As the polls suggests, I think Dusty and Whitfield are far and away the only two must haves and I wouldn’t be scared off because everyone will have them. It’s going to be about who else can/will slot in there to get the forward line moving.

Personally I’m looking at 2 2 4 with Smith and Brayshaw as the mid pricers, chucking in Hill and a rook to round out the six.

Also think AS is onto a bit of good oil in Lynch, can’t see him struggling now that he’s fit and receiving from the Tiger mids. Others worth considering if you need to fill with mid pricers would Blake Acres, Hugh Greenwood, Chayce Jones and I even reckon Jack Lukosious will become a useful DPP and scorer for the price, for what it’s worth.

  7. Can you count someone as a premium if they only average 15 games a year?

    I don’t think so.

Out of that list I have the only 2 I would count as premiums.

The others? Two of them never play enough games, a third almost never plays enough games, one is on an age based downward spiral and one is overrated and overpriced.

Seriously the forwards look pretty bleak this year.

If I have to, and I have trades to burn near the end, I might consider Whitfield.

But I would need a lot of spare trades. A hell of a lot.

  8. I have been waiting to commet on FWDs for several wks & I suppose this is the ideal time. My current team has Whitfield[lock], Steven?, Smith?[can/will change] plus rookies. Happy with the remainder of my squad[DEF 4 keepers, Mid 5 keepers, Rucks G&G] therefore at this stage will go with a very simple/low cost FWD setup and wait & see what FWDS put their hands prior to the bye rds
