Poll – Timmy Timmy Timmy

Written by Motts on February 20 2020

Sometimes, after filling your team, you find yourself needing to fill that last premium midfielder’s position with less than $600k.

That’s where you find yourself muddling over blokes like the two Tims here.

Both averaged over 100 in 2019. Both tipped to take the next step in 2020.

Which one would you take?

Kelly v Taranto

  1. I would rather compromise D3 or F2 to get another uber premo at M6.
Think you can safely pick 6 MIDs who will all ave. 115 min.
I doubt any DEFs will and apart from Whitfield, I don’t think any FWDs will come anywhere near that.
We’ll see over the next few weeks what the rookies are looking like, but think there are plenty of ‘value’ options forward and back to make that shape work best for you.

I think they’ll both improve in 2020, but reckon you can afford to wait. If one of your Uber premos goes down with an LTI then that will be the time to look at these alternatives if they appear to have improved markedly.

    1. In principle I agree, I personally don’t have any of the “Value” guys in defence because I have some pretty strong beliefs in Luke Ryan & Sicily & to a lesser extent Houston even going 3 ‘guns’ & 3 rookies back there i can only afford the 5 uber mids.

  2. Word from GWS is that most mids except Jelly will be spending more time forward due to the high number of quality mids in the team. Cogs and Taranto were specifically mentioned

    1. I heard it was more time on the wing for Kelly, not forward. So it shouldn’t affect him too much, as he plays well as an outside mid anyway.

  3. Kelly is great when he’s on field but for last 3 years i’m always burning trade to get him out once he goes down. Rockliff mk2 =[

    1. Oops thought it said Josh Kelly haha.

Neither Tim or Taranto to me due to stacked midfielders rather go lone wolves at other teams who will rack up points at ease while not competing with other guns.

    2. This is apparently his (JKelly) first full pre-season since his debut season obviously you hear a lot of stuff like that this time of year.

    3. Sorry, but rockliff was an absolute beast in his prime, so good he was worth a punt when started getting injured (just not 3-4 punts lol)kelly has never inspired that level of risk Vs reward. Rocky may suck supercoach wise now but he was amazing once.

  4. Thought a better comparison would be T. Kelly v Coniglio. With the 0 point game removed from Coniglio’s score he was very close to a 110 average already. The other darkhorse who I can see pushing close to 115 is Zac Merrett, am strongly considering starting 1 of the 3 whilst at the same time hoping I can find the extra cash for Neale if I end up not being convinced by any of those 3.

  5. Haven’t considered either to be honest.

Feel that there’s too many capital G guns in the middle to try and overthink it looking for value.

  6. Currently have Taranto at m6 although he has a high ceiling with 4 games 130 plus he is also capable of putting up a 70, even with 25 possession and 5 mark game. Tim Kelly has me intrigued as at Geelong was a goal kicking midfielder something that the Eagles do not have. Plus he will be travelling interstate this year including 2 trips to Qld, and one visit to Tassie and Adelaide to factor in.

    Taranto 13 tons with 4 being 120+
    Kelly 12 tons with 5 being 120+

    Comparing the above two to say Marcus Bontempelli (additional $70,000) if you can stretch your budget, currently in my side at m3;

    Bontempelli 13 tons with 9 being 120+ with 5 being 140+

One of the two will be in my some come round 1 but they have some big ground to make up in reaching that 110-115 mark after 2 to 3 seasons experience only.

  7. Both of them are in new look midfields and until we see where they land and how they stack up, a bit too much risk for me.

TKelly obviously changing teams could have a big impact. I’m sure they’ll try to give him the same role as he had at the Cats, but they have a boat load of good mids to share with.
Taranto will have to compete against all the guys coming back from injury or who were playing injured. Cogs and Ward will play mostly mids I think. Cogs will rest forward, but not sure where Ward will go, I can’t see him forward or back.
