Poll – Top6 DEFs

Written by Schwarzwalder on April 23 2018

allsaints has asked us in the Polling Station if we could vote on the ‘perfect team’ from this point onwards.  Only too happy to help……..today we look at the back line.

Forget about chasing points from Rds 1-5, which six DEFs do you think will score you the most pts from THIS POINT ONWARDS? (Players are in order of price after Rd4)

Which six DEFs will score the most pts from this point onwards? (six choices)

  1. Surprised Sicily is getting the love from coaches considering he is off to the tribunal this week. Won’t be a surprise if he gets another suspension later in the year

      1. It wasn’t really a stomp; he trod on him quite lightly. He might get a week, but I doubt it will be more than that.

        1. Intentional, low impact to the body = fine. Should not have gone to the tribunal.

He may be such a flog that his hobbit name is Drongo Flogbottom, but that is no reason not to follow the rules.

          1. I rolled the dice with Greene last year knowing he was a suspension risk.

This year I just couldn’t go Sicily even though I felt he was under priced and had plenty of improvement in him.

We all discussed his risks in the preseason yet some chose to ignore his failings.

2 likely suspensions before round 6 have proved he is not worth the risk.

How many more games will he miss this year?

            1. Most people who had him knew he’d miss 2-4 games for suspension. Still worth picking when any other player can easily miss 2 games due to injury.

            2. Sicily + rookie over 2 weeks would have scored more than Billings outright for cheaper and a better bye. Depends how you look at it.

    1. He’ll be a top-6 averaging defender, but you’re right, with the games he’ll miss through suspension it’s unlikely that he will be top-6 for total points.

But as long as you have decent bench cover, the weeks he doesn’t miss should more than make up for the ones he does.

  2. Sicily 100% if it was based on averages.

But the bloke cannot stop being a dickhead for the life of him! Im loving his scores when his on the field but his making me despise him more than ever…..

  3. Thanks Schwarzy. Interesting results to date. Like Witherden. Sicily probably there as a 60+ bench cover should just about cover his continued idiocy.

  4. This was on the AFL website Dec 14, 2017.
Three low-level offences in a season will no longer result in an automatic one-match suspension, with a fine now applicable for the third offence.
Cases referred directly to the Tribunal will attract at least a three-week suspension save for exceptional circumstances.
Staging will now attract a fine for a first offence.
Automatic loading for players with bad records has been scrapped.
Fines for low-level offences will increase from $2000 to $3000 for first offences, $3000 to $5000 for second offences and $5000 to $8000 for third offences.
So he’s gone for 3? Appeals on the basis of Intentional, Low Impact, Body Contact and it’s a fine? Notwithstanding a bad record has been scrapped, it was just such a bad look I’m expecting 3 weeks. (So that’s Cox, Byrne, Ablett, Marchbank, M. Crouch, J. Kelly, L. Ryan, Caddy again and Sicily – again, from my opening 30. High risk, no reward selection policy!)

  5. As I was going down the list, I was able to see 4 I was pretty confident would be there (Laird, Yeo, Simpson, and Hurley). Not surprisingly, those were the ones that about 80%+ of coaches selected. The second tier has about 4-5 guys that could end up top 6, including Ryan as noted above.

With regards to the rookies, they might end up keepers but what usually ends up happening is they taper off the last 5-6 rounds because of how physically demanding the game is for that long of a period.

    1. I do bring up your last point in the rookie review tomorrow. It happens every year, we always say someone will be a keeper but they do slowly drop off, even if they are still mature ages. AFL is physically demanding and even some of the best slow down so it’s only natural.

  6. Sicily , very frustrating. Clarkson knows he gets targeted , and will continue to be targeted while he has skin deep flog tendencies!

  7. Do you think either Andrews or
Cutler(both BRL) would be an option
If so who would be better?

    TU Andrews
    TU Cutler
    Thanks for your help

    1. Would have thought both are a risk. Cutler a definite no from me. Andrews would be a better option of the two but he’s a key defender. He’s played 63 games and rarely misses one, but will have the odd low-score playing the role he does. Clearly gonna be a gun, but Witherden is really the only SC-relevant DEF at Brisbane right now. Sadly, he will probably be close to $490k once this round finally comes to an end. Sigh.
