Preferred Structure – Forwards

Written by Big Sexy on February 21 2013

I was curious what setup everyone was looking at this year, so I’m going to run a series of posts covering each line to see where everyone’s thought’s lie. In turn, hopefully give a little advise to those unsure. People are probably familiar with the Guns-n-rookies strategy, the midpricer, the chunky combo etc etc.

Rules are: Rookie <; $200k, Midpricer $200k – $500k, Premium >; $500k

The options were a little tricker than I thought to cover all combo’s so it’s based on on-field players only as I’ll assume bench are Rookies, so here goes….. What is your team most closely aligned to up Forward:

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Just for the record, I’m currently running 3 Prems, 2 Mids and a Rook….. but likley will change.

  1. Yeah i’ve got 4 prems and a midpricer (varcoe) and the rest are rookies; Mayes, Daniher, Rowe and Macaffer (not a rookie..)

  2. I’ve got a 2-4-0 structure, with 2 rookies on the bench
    Franklin – Rockcliff
    Martin, Bruest, LeCRas, Varcoe
    Daniher, Simpson

  3. 3 – 1 – 2
Prems – Cox, Rocky, Stevie J
    Mids – Wright (Adel)
    Rookies – Stringer, Macaffer

The midpricer is the biggest challenge as there are so many options at both ends of the pay scale, comes down to who you want to take a punt on, is it the return vet with an injury cloud, or is it the next big thing about to make the jump into the premium category. Decisions, decisions.

  4. 4-1-1 and my midpricer is Wright (at the moment anyway, maybe Dusty or Breust).

With so few prospects with the forward rookies (damn you Staker) I’m looking to go pretty strong with my forward line. I don’t trust any the low range midpricers (Varcoe, Lecras, Byrnes) so I’m hoping to get five forwards who can average 100 from RD1.

This will compromise my backline (2-2-2 – midpricers Heppell and someone $300-$400k) but half of even the top ten backmen don’t average over 95. Heppell will get that this year (and then some I reckon) and if I can get at least 85 out of a smokie then I’ve had a win.

  5. 3-2-1 for me.
Buddy-Cox-SuperPav (depends on playing rd.1 at this stage,he was wounded a lot last year and still did ok) Siposs and Varcoe as mid pricers with Macaffer as the rookie even though hes not really.Of course that will change heaps yet.if Staker comes good he will be there or on the bench somewhere.

  6. Definitions of “premium” differ from site to site.

What do we reckon? Has to be over $500k to be a premium?

  8. 4-2-2 (counting Macaffer as a rook here, though technically he is a mid pricer)

Walker, Rockliff, Johnson, Hawkins, Varcoe, Byrnes (Macaffer, Paparone) for me

  9. I’m noting that there is about a handful of decent midpricers, which have either underperformed last year or its their second year..
Most of which seem to be in the forward line, Martin, Cloke, Breust, Brown, Embley, de Boer etc.

Am I looking in the wrong places..? Like is there more?
