Defensive Upgrade

Written by MJ on April 26 2013

The omission of Stevenson this week may have forced some of you, like myself, into an early defensive upgrade. Here are the pick of the bunch (assuming you don’t have enough $$$ in the bank for the expensive Grant Birchall), who would you pick?

Hartlett has been dominating and is by far the most popular selection (15% of sides) but will he start being tagged? Only managed 38pts when tagged by the Giants. Will probably be the least consistent of the lot and has to be the most injury prone. How will he go when Port inevitably start losing against tougher teams? Has certainly shown a heck of a lot of improvement from last season though.

Grimes saves a few $$, which would make next week’s upgrade a little easier. Was 3rd highest scoring DT defender last season, just needs to convert into SC pts, which he has done so far this year. Basically plays as a midfielder for Melbourne, collecting 22+ disposals in 15 of his last 18 games in 2012, but only kicked the 1 goal. Averaged 106.7 from Rd 17 last season. Can obviously perform well in a losing side. A POD in only 4.7% of teams.

Waters averaged 100 last year, hence the higher price tag, but has only been a premium for one season. Shows signs of continuing that with 117 & 103 in his first two hit-outs. Has a relatively easy fixture list from here til the byes with Port, Dogs, Lions, North, GWS, Rich, StK. Leaves less $$ in the bank for an upgrade next week though. In 6.3% of sides so could make as a handy POD, but has already been injured this season.

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Out of those 3 hartlett is the pick, yes he got a 38, yes he was tagged but he also tweeked his back. Just the way he is playing is very positive, if he keeps it up could be in the top ten by years end.

  2. Agree he is a risk MJ, but the role he is playing is SC gold. Playing around the ground with some rucking included for good measure. Means lots of contested footy. Shaw is a proven premium, but is susceptible to off-field muppetry. Also gets a forward tag often, which means he is capable going large, but also tiny. Dixon imo will be more consistent (the 70 he scored he came off at 3QT with an ankle injury), which is my preference. I don’t like rollercoasters!

I am also considering holding off and going Stevenson >> Docherty next week. First world problems! 🙄

  4. Out of those 3 id go Hartlett but What about a even cheaper option Hibberd yet to score under 90 and has scored over the ton last 3 weeks and could have a day out against the witches hats and at $387,600 looks a bargain if you cant afford any of those players.

  5. Hanley is worth consideration when back from suspension.

Another option is wait a week. Downgrade to Docherty, then upgrade to Birchall.

Why have you only included three voting options? What about Goddard and Gibbs?

I enjoy your regular articles however I think you are taking a liberty by publishing an article that is clearly based around a question that YOU have for YOUR team.
If you want this sort of feedback then the appropriate forum is in the Trade Talk or Teams threads.

    Keep up the great work!

  7. Ive got a question in relation to this post…
If you have 50k or less in the bank you cant really do any of these upgrades unless you do a triple trade ( over two weeks) or unless you trade a Wines out of your side….Otherwise you cant afford it as all the cash cows havent fattened up enough…..Is that not true???

  8. Can i get an opinion guys? I’ve got B.Hill and J.Viney as Mid rookies and want to upgrade one of them to a premo def via swinging Goddard into the midfield. Viney seems to have better scoring potential but has that sore of 9 and is being rested this week. Hill is scoring less and will reach a lower peak price (probably ) but he is playing this week. Who would you trade out?

    TU Viney
    TD: Hill

  9. Is it worth trading in Hartlett as a long term option before his price gain?
I want to trade Karnezis down to a rookie but Mayes is too highly priced for mine and Kerridge and Paparone aren’t on the bubble.
    Also have Stevenson.

  10. Pittard out for Stevenson has thrown my planned trades up in the air. Had planned to go: – Stevenson & Viney out for Hartlett & J.Selwood (using 700K of 835K cash).
Now unsure whether to go only Viney to Hartlett & let def rookies rise before switching Hartlett & Goodes into Def & replace Def rookies with Selwood & J.Watson in the mids.
Defenders of L.Brown, Hutchins, Pittard, C.Heath, Stevenson all much of a muchness. Hutchins & Stevenson my least favourite of these. Hutchins is sub today & was not overly impressed with him last week, but not keen on selling so quickly.
    Anyone got similar thoughts today?
