2012 Supercoach Strategy

Written by Motts on January 11 2012

After a few years of thinking I can jag a mid priced bargain who’s going to play his pants off (see McGlynn, Ben in 2011), I’m now firmly of the opinion that the best strategy to go with is a pure Guns and Rookies (G’n’R) play.

For those not familiar with this strategy it means packing as many blokes with around a 100+ average (the Guns) into your team as you can and then filling the rest of the positions with players priced about $200k or less (the Rookies).

An example team might be:
DEF: B. Goddard, H. Scotland, B. Deledio, H. Shaw, P. Bower, S. Morris, B. Smedts (C. Heath, B. Wilkes)
MID: M. Murphy, J. Selwood, B. Gibbs, T. Cotchin, K. Stevens, D. Shiel (J. Stringer, D. Zorko)
RUC: S. Mumford, B. McEvoy (S. Rowe, O. Stephenson)
FWD: L. Franklin, A. Goodes, N. Fyfe, D. Beams, A. Tomlinson, A. Saad, L. Casboult (T. Walsh, J. Hamling)
CASH LEFT: $900

Is anyone planning on following a different strategy in 2012? Care to post an example team utilising it?

  1. How’s this for a sample team? Mid-priced strategy.

    Def: N. Bock, X Ellis, J. Grimes, J. Drummond, R. Rambling, M. Coad, K. Hunt (M. Hartley, N. Winmar)
    Mid: C. Judd, D. Wells, A. Monfries, L. Power, B. McGlynn, F. Ray (M. Williams, J. Sheringhan)
    Ruc: T. Goldstein, M. Gawn (A. Phillips, R. Bathie)
    For: P. Chapman, D. Giansiracusa, S. Higgins, S. Milne, C. Knights, J. Koschitzke, J. Patton (B. Dick, D. Farmer)

  3. You are right Motts, Guns and Rookies are the way to go. Throw in a few guns returning from injury (aka Petrie 2011) and you’re set.

Is it my imagination or does the rookie prices seeem to rise each year? 190K+ is a high price for a top draft pick.

  4. There r some mid priced players definantly worth the punt this year. Most teams will have atleast 2 of m.Barlow l.Hayes b.lake n.brown j.brown r.conca and there r a handful more. 4 of these players r potential 100ppg players in Barlow Hayes brown n lake. Ud b silly not to try atleast 2 of these out. I’ve gone the strategy with 4 guns on def, mid n forward line. 1 mid priced in each and the rest rookies. Team look very strong.

  5. I tried the mid-priced strategy last year and made the grand final but it was a tough slog. Very slow start to the season with a handful of losses while my mid-priced players decided whether they were going to fire or not.

The strategies I’m putting in place this year are Guns and Rookies, and not to invest heavily in certain top teams whose coaches have a habbit of resting half of the team in the last round of the year (ie. Alaster Clarkson!). Cost me the grand final that did 🙁

  6. Mottsy…. With a few changes in 2012 and a few more lessons learnt in 2011, I think Guns n Roses is the only way to go…. With a pencil through Danger, Missy and any other mid pricer I can think of, I’ll see if I can resist the temptation of dragging in one before the first bouce of the big dance….

  7. Yeah, in all seriousness, the Guns & Roses strategy is def the way to go nowadays. Since the introduction of the two new teams it’s meant there are a lot more rookies playing AFL footy on a regular basis. Even for the last few years, other clubs have been playing kids early to see what they’re capable of.

Also the new rule changes have meant that the big bodies don’t have as much of an impact as they once did and players must rely more and more on their running game. It means all the athletically gifted kids can come in straight away and make an impact.

It was once a tough task to pick enough rookies that were going to play regularly throughout the season. However, now there’s too many rookies to choose from, which makes the Guns & Rookies strategy the obvious choice.

  8. This is in my view is the ultimate GnR team for 2012: there may be 1 or 2 too many guns in the mids as there might be good priced rookies in there. maybe boyd and priddis out for shaw in backs and fyfe up fwd to even the spread of guns out more. but if its a true gnr strategy then priddis and boyd would outscore shaw and fyfe every week!!! what do others think???

B: Goddard Deledio Lake Clarke Bower Buntine Blee
    Wilkes Ellis
M: Pendlebury Swan Ablett Murphy Boyd Priddis
    Shiel Miles
    R: Sandi Berger
    Big O Giles
F: Franklin Martin Clifton Saad Porpas Rowe Tomlinson
    Treloar Zorko

  9. If you are choosing 12 gun players for your team I dont think it gets much better than these 12. but i think having a full compliment of stars in the mids might not allow you take full advantage of upgrading mid rookies?? Do people think there is enough value in the backs and fwd rookies to make my team viable???

  10. What are some other good fantasy games apart from SC and DT? Want to try something with different scoring this year.

  11. Definately GnR again for me but with two subtle caveats:

    – premiums will be assessed with more weighting to their durability ie: Franklin, Rioli, SJ, Roo, Shaw etc. will not be considered; and
    – will give significantly more weighting to mature age rookies (subject to nab of course) as first rd picks are too expensive and the compromised draft makes it harder for 18yo’s to excell in first year. Eg: Coniglio will have to average 15ppg more than Clifton to have the same proportionate increase in value.

  13. I agree with Rioli, NRoo and Shaw Deano but are Buddy and Stevie J’s durability questionable? I thought both were outstanding last year.

  14. Guns and rookies are the way to go it what i have done for the last 3 years
80% of the skill is picking the right rookies coz it what makes your team better then everyone else at the end of the day
The other 20% is picking the right guns but from reading a few teams on this site they still get it wrong with like 6 out of 12 guns being ok-good players

  15. Hey Mottsa,
Whats your opinion on scotlands 2012 campaign?
’11 repeat? worse? better? to old? He’s 32 in July!!!!
Whats the good word coming out of cardboard park?
I think Lids may be a better option ATM, age is only factor IMO.
Both D/M, both avg 105 odd in 2011.

    Whats everyone’s opinion on Broughton?
09 & 10 he avg 98. Everyone jumped on board in 11 and his avg dropped to 92??? Unfortunately options in his price range (500k) are limited.
New coach always spells trouble trying to pick squads in SC.
Whats the word coming out of the purple haze?

  16. Hey Motts,

The byes look like a killer this year. How do we cover for six teams each week for three weeks? I wonder if anybody has worked out a good strategy?

I had a crazy idea. What if one week was sacrificed? Choose rd 13 for example, what if all you guns come from GCS, STK, RICH, HAW, CAR, PTA? Rookies and bargians come from any team and rely on bench cover. Here is an example for this unusual strategy …

    B: Goddard, Lids, Scotland, Birchall, M.Clarke, Docherty, L.Brown, B.Wilkes
M: Gaz, Murph, Judd, Barlow, Coniglio, D.Shiel, T.Mitchell
R: McEvoy, Kruez, Big O, giles
F: Buddy, Dusty, Lewis, NRoo, Brown, Rowe, Saad, Trelor, Zorko
    REMAINING CASH: 27K

The beauty of this idea is that you are a good chance to win your leauge in rounds 11 and 12 when others have guns on the pine.

    Crazy or worth consideration?

  17. I’m going with a GnFnR strategy this year. 15 Guns – Jason Akermanis – Brendon Fevola – 15 Rookies. Guns n’ Flogs n’ Rookies.

On a more serious note though I’ve dusted off the crystal ball and was scratching out some kind of plan to approach the three byes. Are my calculations a bit skewiff or is it literally impossible to get through the three weeks without a donut? I can’t see a way to do it without copping at least 2.

Has anyone found a way around it? Don’t have to give up the intel but if anyone does think it’s possible then I’ll have another crack.

  18. Quick question. With 18 teams for the first time in SC, does anyone know how finals work this year? Top 8 and bottom 10, yeah? If so, do the bottom 10 still have their own finals system? How does that work now? Just trying to organize prizes for one of my cash leagues.

  19. Hey guys! Great to be back for another season.

This year I’m thinking I’m going to get the guns that I know are going to do what I need them to do… Score points e.g. Judd, Ablett, Franklin, Goddard. And then later in the year grab those other guns that could be risky going at the start of the year e.g. Rockliff, Priddis, Mundy, Martin, Brown. Fill the rest of the team with rookies. This could leave me with maybe 1 million in the bank to spend layer on.

    What do you guys think?

  20. IMO there are two very tasty mid pricers. Davis from GWS and Warnock GCS, here’s why.

Had a look at the GWS backline players last night. Given there is a complete lack of developed mature bodies to protect the kids, they could have a truly horrific start to the year!

That said I think Phil Davis as the most expensive GWS back at $280k is almost a must have. Also Cornes is listed as a forward but must almost certainly play at half back as must Brogan unless Sheeds is willing to concede 200+ every week. These 3 guys will see a helluva of lot of football, & as long as the clangers don’t mount too severely should score 60-100 week in week out, as they kids look to them to move the ball sideways and out of defence.

I know there are a multitude of mid-pricers floating about and all at clubs with more promise of success, but ones like these that are guaranteed a game each week and will be a focal point for developing attacks look very tasty indeed.

Davis only needs to score an ave of 60 (I think he’ll be closer to 80) to rise in value by over $100k, perfect for any coach looking to jump on a cash cow mid season when the GWS round 11 bye hits. Cornes is more of a gamble requiring an ave. over 75 to gain any value, and Brogan…. lets wait & see.

Similarly, Warnocks move from Melbourne to the Gold Coast should see him play most games as a 2nd or 3rd defender and he is a strong mark and likes to rebound, and at $260k he offers a similar upside to Davis. Low risk for decent points return (better than 95% of rookies), & good cash return in first qtr of season.

    Worth consideration I reckon!
