Rare Gems – Rd3

Written by Schwarzwalder on April 6 2017

There are the popular choices in Supercoach, then come the Points Of Difference………then there’s the Rare Gems.  The players that are pumping out the big digits just for you and your team.  Every few weeks we’ll try and unearth the Rare Gems (under 3% ownership, exceptions in the RUCK) that could propel your team up the rankings……..

DEFENDERS

Lee Spurr (FRE $411 800) – Michael Johnson is struggling to string many good games together, Joel Hamling plays key-position, Garrick Ibbotson had the one good season, Timmy Sheridan can’t get a game at the minute………this has left Lee Spurr to pick up the pieces in the Freo backline.  Owned by just 0.5% of teams, he seems to be the main ball carrier coming out of defence (and they’re seeing a lot of ball down there!)  Scores of 110 & 89 to start the year.  Will be interesting to see how he develops throughout the year………

MIDFIELDERS

Ollie Wines (PTA $533 700) – Had promised so much to Supercoaches over the last few years but burnt so many in 2016.  Has always had the makings of a Supercoach-Beast with his bullocking work but clangers stopped him abruptly in his tracks (#1 in the League last year!).   Has started the season on fire with 125 & 145 in the first two weeks.  Has that dreadful Rd9 Bye which doesn’t help.  Although the 1.5% of teams with Wines would be pretty chuffed right now……….

RUCK

Stefan Martin (BRL $488 000) – After holding Stef for the entire year in 2016, I swore off him for the 2017 season.  Especially with the prospect of a dual Ruck system with Archie Smith.  Turns out that Fagan likes the sole Ruckman set-up and Smith hasn’t cracked the line-up at this stage.  Stef has pumped out 98 & 126 in the first two Rounds and at just 6.5% ownership (rare for the RUCK! Only two positions), is definitely a viable option for the remainder of the season……..

FORWARDS

Jack Gunston (HAW $502 300) – Not a great first game against the Bombers (68)but Gunston showed what he can do on the weekend with a 131 against the Crows.  With the Hawks going through somewhat of a re-structuring phase, Gunston is sure to continue pushing up the ground.  Is currently owned by just  2.1%.  Expect that to rise over the coming weeks…………

What do you make of these Rare Gems?  Did you take a punt on any of them?  Which other Rare Gems would you recommend?

  1. Had Gunston most of pre-season and felt pretty good about dropping after R1 now hmmmmm we’ll see.

Yeo has started the season brightly had 25 touches in both games had only done that in 1 game last season & 4 times in his whole career.

    1. Yeo found his way onto my team over the last two years……never again! I don’t care how well he scores, he’ll falter, he always does…….

  2. Zach Merrett. Not a forward this year, not the standout mid in his team this year, averaging 119 this year. Huge ceiling, 3.9% ownership.
re: Wines – I really don’t know what happened to him last year. Did he get concussed at some stage?

    1. Had Zerret all of last year. When he lost his Fwd status he didn’t make my team this year…hope i don’t regret it

    2. Wines just butchered the ball alot last year, similar to treloar this year without accumulating as many possessions. He would generally get 80-100 points from 20-30 posessions. He also gave away free kicks alot.

  3. I’m considering giving up my ruck coverage at least for a while to bring in Pruess. His first rd score wasn’t good but those rucks have a great ability to pump out some good scores. Might be a great money maker?

    1. I wouldnt waste the trade. He did great last week but you have to remember he was a late inclusion for the injured Goldy. As long as Goldy is fit I can’t see Preuss scoring well.

  4. There’s this bloke scoring really well. Not sure if you’ve heard of him at all. SCOTT PENDLEBURY!!!!
Probably my ballsiest and best picks this year. Also Selwood has been a solid selection too scoring 2 100+ scores. Sitting nicely around the 6K mark

    So many overlooked premiums!

  5. I swapped Goldy for Stef Martin 15 min before the Bris / Ess game, when I found out about goldy it was too late to bring in Witts or swap Nank to ruck and I couldnt afford Gawn so Martin or Ryder were my only options.
I went against my better judgement but it paid off last week, hopefully I dont regret it as the season plays out.

Im so annoyed with Wines’ form, had him in 15 and 16 and put him on the never again list.
