Its so close you can taste it. Have you thought about a strategy yet? Maybe you’ve got a player or two in mind?

Throw your team in here and let the punters critique it.

Believe me, they know what they’re talking about.

Don’t know if I’m allowed to do this MR but I am anyway. I found this over at DTT. I thought it might amuse.

‘Twas the night before Dreamteam, when all through the house
Not a creature was clicking, not even a mouse;
The excel spread sheets were researched with care,
In hopes that Dream team would soon be there;

The coaches were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of 100’s danced in their heads;
And donuts in bye weeks, and the salary cap,
And big Sandi’s just racked up his 100th tap.

Dreaming of watching the fan footy scores,
seeing plus 3’s and plus 6’s and golden plus 4’s.
When suddenly outside a noise could be heard
I jumped up to peer out at what was that stirred.

The moon shone through on the new-fallen snow
gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
when, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
I saw visions; my car winning team did appear.

With a forgotten key forward, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than Juddythe rest they did come,
and he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

“Now, Cyril! Now, Jelwood! Now, Swanny and Barlow!
On, Luey! On Martin! On, Zaka and Trengove!
To the top of the list! To the top of the league!
Now dash away! Dash away! Take home that car!”

And then, in a twinkling, I saw my future again
my captain got injured, my cash cow got banned.
As I drew in my breath, and was turning around,
Saw the same old story, as last year coming around.

Petrie was layed up, something up with his arm,
andbuddy was rubbed out, he refused to disarm
A bundle of mid pricers stunk up my team,
Will I learn this time, From this foretold night dream?

Guns and rookies must be the only way,
Mid pricers will come at you don’t hear what they say.
If you think you can find the guy ripe to break out,
He’ll stink up and stuff you beginning the rout.

I woke that morning and Dream team was here,
I sat there all eager and cracked open a beer;
This time will be different, I’ll learn mistakes made
Who am I kidding, I already want to trade……..

Omen January 31, 2012 at 8:57 pm

I’ve missed you PA

Considering there are over 500 players overall to choose from that cuts it down a bit, especially for any first time punters or for time-poor people who just want to cut to the chase.

But wait, that’s not all. The numbers in brackets suggest a number of players to select from any given category. So, if you follow this, you’ll end up with a solid Guns n Rookies strategy with a few gap fillers to make your team flexible and affordable and still have the odd POD.

2. Do you need Coniglio and Wingard in the one team? Only if they are both brilliant in the NAB. Best to downgrade at least one for a cheaper rookie.
3. I think you need Giles in the ruck
4. Which Roo? Be very careful of JRoo in particular I do not fancy the Tigers draw for the first 10 which could spell trouble for forward scores.
5. I do not think Pattinson will play

Two too many mid-pricers down back.
Morabito’s injured and still not training with the main group – replace him.
Reckon you’re paying a bit much for Pav.
Jacobs definitely worth a shot and could be a good POD.

Nice. I like the mid change, not sure on Harry it is hard to pick mid pricers that will improve. If you need a mid-pricer Duffield is worth a look around that price. Zaha might be a good choice, watch the NAB.

Big punt there Jester with the both the old men limping around your forward line. Even with a good NAB Cup are they going to last the year.

Brown is tempting and I think having most of last year off would have done his body good. With the young Teddy Bears looking at a bit of a resurgence this year the kids might just put an extra spark in the Old Brown Dog’s legs. If he is fit he should get better service than has received over the last couple of years as well.

Personally I’m staying well away from the Llama though. Dodging strings and dodgy knees don’t bode well. Tough year ahead for the Saints too.

Cookie cutter

Meaning

Originally, a utensil for cutting shaped pieces out of dough. More recently, characterising a lack of originality.

Origin

The phrase ‘cookie cutter’, which is intended to epitomise a conformist attitude, lacking in originality, is of fairly recent American origin. An early example of its use in print comes from The Chicago Sunday Tribune, February 1922:

“There are always ‘cookie cutter’ tendencies among us. One of these this year is the caracul trimmed coat which every other woman in New York wears.”

I’d use some of that money you’ve got left to upgrade your ruck-

* Salary Cap + Kreuz= $574, 300 –> Nic Nat -$508, 800 = BAL $65, 500

* Salary Cap + Kreuz= $574, 300 –> Roughead $550, 000= BAL $24, 300

* Salary Cap + Kreuz= $574, 300 and downgrade Tomlinson in your defence, say + $40k = $614, 300 –> Goldstein or Sandilands

HTH :-)

I like his ruck set up. The only one I’d really want to swap Kruez for is McEvoy.
There are too many question marks surrounding Massive/211/Nic Nat/Mummy/Goldstein & McIntosh to take the risk.
Trading out Tomlinson means losing his D/F DPP link with Smedts.

I’d be taking Beams before Steele.
Probably better options than Siera up back.
Track Barlow through the NAB Cup. I like Priddis as a P.O.D

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Spiffo February 1, 2012 at 12:31 pm

Priddis is a must have not POD. Like Gibbs he ALWAYS plays, in fact last year he did not miss a game & did not score below 80, that is SC gold. Expect him to average 110+ this year, on top of him being a great chance to play all 22 games. Lock

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Happy Go Lucky February 2, 2012 at 12:57 pm

I never said that he was/wasn’t a must have in anyone’s team. I said that he is not in most midfield’s that I have read so far. Thus my comment about him being a p.o.d.
If you think he is a lock that’s your opinion and you are welcome to it.
My opinion is that Pendlebury/Ablett are locks with Swan/Murphy being not far behind and Dal being just behind them. Barlow becomes a lock if he fires up in the NAB.
I have Priddis/Judd/Boyd/Rockliff & Mitchell just behind Dal. All are premium’s, though none of them are ‘locks’ i.m.o.

my advice would be to trade early, so that you can upgrade your team asap, and reap the benefits earlier, even if it means you don;t maximise the amount of cash you get from your cash cows. there is no point saving your trades for the end of the year because by then everyone who started trading earlier will be averaging 100-200 points per round more than you

And like me, you sound reluctant to do sideways trades but pulling the trigger early can save you many more points than if you kept the trade for later. example Alan Didak last year,

as for your team I cant fault the premiums you have selected, they are all proven performers, however maybe try and get some really cheap midfield rookies so that you could turn squeeze another gun into your backline, or upgrade christensen to fyfe

Thanks zaharaharakis.
Last year had a trigger finger on trades and burned them early.
was waiting too see how Fyfe recovers from surgery.
The rookies I have chosen are pricey, and were chosen based on probabliity of being ready for rd 1. Am happy to revise. Looking forward to NAB cup to see how things pan out.
Mid rookies still considering Woodward(Hawks), Mitchell (Syd), Horsely(GC), Shiel (GWS).

Backline: Don’t rate Touey in a SC sense, I’d be downgrading him to a rookie… Astbury maybe? Lake is very risky, I’m waiting to see his NAB cup preformances. Karmichael is more than an interesting choice too… Best of luck with that.
Mids: Solid. I personally wouldn’t have Gaff (second year blues looming), downgrading him to a rookie would be a good move IMO. Tom Mitchell perhaps. Good luck with Bastinac. Can see how you’d justify it, will be a massive POD for you.
Rucks: Set and forget. Nice.
Forwards: Very Ballsy with Voldt, Brown and Winderlich… Would get rid of one of them, probably Jason… I also doubt Gunstons gametime and scoring potential… Maybe upgrade him with the cash you’ve got from downgrading Gaff… Or Downgrade him and upgrade Gaff.

Hope I helped, good luck mate.

It’s a classic post. Its still relevant this year. In fact, it’s even more relevant because we know the GnR strategy works after trying it last year.

And how many of those guns are still getting named this year? Class doesn’t fade.

I think we are getting a bit in front of ourselves with all this “why is he posting multiple teams every second day” and “why can’t he choose his own players” and “we’ll all end up with the same teams” bullshit.

G’day boys, I’m back for another year of Supercoach!
My 1st team

DEF
Goddard, Shaw, Newman, Birchall, M. Clark, B. Ellis, Mohr
Smedts, Wilkes
MID
Swan, Selwood, Deledio, Barlow, Hayes, Coniglio
Docherty, Pfeiffer
RUCK
Sandi, McIntosh
Giles, Stephenson

What do you guys think? Winderlich good option? Strengths and Weaknesses?

My first effort, The Casserole Kids for 2012:

DEF: God, Lids, Shaw, Grimes, M Clarke, Ellis, Mohr
(Wilkes, Smedts)
MID: GAJ, J Selwood, A Swallow, Barlow, Shiel, Mitchell
(Kavanagh, Zorko M/F)
RUCKS: 211, Nic-Nat
(Orren, Giles)
FWD: Buddy, Pavlova, Dusty, Zaharakis, J Brown, Walsh, Treolar
(Saad, Hampton)

$76k in the bank.
Gone with one mid-ranged player on each line (Grimes, Barlow, Naitanui and Brown) as uniques. 211 should also be a bit of a POD.
Tear it to pieces, but keep it honest ;) What do you think?

jeeebus a late one for me, again. Least I got some housework done. Only started looking at my SC team at 1am. Where is that elusive “me time” hiding?? ok anyway my team is as follows (at this very early stage):

NEW-SAINTSATIONS

Backs: Deledio, Shaw, Fisher, Dochety, Mohr, Smedts, Darley.
Inter: Winmar/Redpath

MIds: G.Ablett-V/C, Goddard CAPT, Hodge, Montagna, Barlow, (Christensen-didn’t realise he was a fwd/c- yay! *SOLD*)
Inter: Sumner/K. Stevens

Rucks: Mumford, McEvoy
Inter: Giles, Stephensen

FWD: Franklin, R’OK, A.Walker, J. Brown, A. Siposs, Tomlinson, Zorko
Inter: Cameron, Walsh (hope he plays well this year, good luck to him!)

in the bank? $17, 600.

I think Siposs is expensive considering how many games he played last year, but I think he will improve greatly this year so I’m taking a punt!

g’night all -slightly weary!

Hey Stev, a few points:
- Seems to be a lot of mid-pricers. Maybe look at getting rid of two and putting in 1 premium and 1 rookie. i.e. Lake and Russell out for Delidio and a rookie. Too much $$ to be made from good rookies at the start of the year. We’ll get a clearer view as to who are the best rookie options when NAB Cup begins.
- I’m a big believer in set and forget rucks. For that you need premium ruckmen. HMac and Nic Nat are great players, but not proven SC guns. I’d look at trying to squeeze in Sandi or Mumford.
- Forwards are good, not sure on Didak but who knows how he’ll go. I like the multiple c/f players you have.
- Make sure you get J Giles in the ruck as a rookie. I think he’ll be one of the most picked players this year for good reason. Basement price and will be doing the majority of the ruck work for GWS.

Hope this helps!

Hey guys! Great to be back!

DEFENDERS – Brendon Goddard, Brett Deledio, Sam Fisher, Tim Mohr, Billie Smedts, Will Sierakowski, Nick Winmar, Nathan Blee, Beau Wilkes

MIDFIELDERS – Scott Pendlebury, Gary Ablett, Dane Swan, Chris Judd, Anthony Morabito, Darren Pfeiffer, Dayne Zorko, Dylan Shiel

RUCKS – Shane Mumford, Jonathan Giles, Tom Derickx, Sam Rowe

FORWARDS – Lance Franklin, Adam Goodes, Nathan Fyfe, Jordan Roughead, Ahmed Saad, Adam Treloar, Tommy Walsh, Hayden Crozier, Simon Tunbridge

Salary Cap Left – $600,600

As you can see, I’m leaving a bit in the bank for later use. I’m going all G’n’R, no mid pricers. And in the midfield I’m staying with the popular ones who will get me the points no matter what, and getting the POD’s when I see what they can do. Haven’t done much work into this team but thought I would get one up.

Thanks guys

You need 1 more defender & forward gun.
If you want to run the 1/3 ruck strategy then your premium should be more reliable than Mummy. Look @ Louie or McEvoy.
Jordan Roughead?? Am I missing something here?
Track Rowe’s, Morabito’s & Fyfe’s fitness
Is Winmar & Siera likely to play senior footy in the early rounds this year?
My gut says probably not, but, they may impress enough in the NAB Cup to warrant selection.
Have you factored byes into your team selection?

Yep. JPK has some pretty big wraps on him in swan land. A clearance king, suits our style of play. Not sure I’d have him this year though. At a pretty awkward price range where proven scores like Barlow and Hayes could be selected for a similar price. Can’t see him pushin to top 10-15 mids this year which is what you want for that price. My tip would be that he maintains his average this year, then goes bang next season ;)

Fyfe’s shoulders worry me, as does his roll with Lyon at the helms. As for Pav, you always know he’s going to deliver. So durable. Should be back to playing as a key forward which spells big points in an improving Fremantle side. I’m going with Pav ATM.

Depends how Fyfe comes back from injury. ATM I like Pavlich better, better pre-season. Plus I suspect him to play more of a forward role so he could quite easily kick 50+ goals this year

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

Fishtopher February 1, 2012 at 2:02 pm

There’s a lot of talk about Pav moving to more of a permanent forward role. Personally that rings big warning bells. Might kick a few extra goals but will lose a lot of points not being on the ball.

As long as Fyfe doesn’t have any hiccups from now until RD 1 and looks 100% in the NAB he’ll be in my starting line up and cranking the average up to 120.

Juddy but not THE Juddy February 1, 2012 at 12:53 pm

team change number 4 seeing as HS opened up today.

Backs
Godd, Lids, Enright, Suckling, Lake, Mohr, Morris (S) Blee, Wilkes
Mids
Gaz, Swan, Watson, Barlow, Bastinac, McDonald (S) Treolar, Mitchell
Rucks
McEvoy, West (S) Giles, Stephenson
Fwds
Franklin, Martin, Beams, Brown, Winderlich, Saad, Zorko (S) Smedts, Walsh

I can see that my mids are not as strong as others but I don’t think that I have as many rookies as they do to then try and bridge the gaps to a premium. It will be easier to upgrade Lake, Bastinac, West, Brown and Winders to a premy rather than starting from pure rookie $$. I do expect the players mentioned above to score better than they did last year providing they stay healthy.
I will change this at least 5-10 times after NAB but until then there is little or no point.

Brandon Ellis is a great pick down back. A round 1 start is on the cards. Marty Clarke, Nathan Blee and Beau Wilkes all look solid. Keep an eye out on Tim Mohr.
As for the forward rookies, I’m a huge fan of Adam Treloar. He is all class. Zorko looks ripe for a round 1 start and Tommy Walsh could be a revalation up forward for the Swannies. Plenty of options, Stoney. Watch the NC closely.

Gutsy team, Nickroo! The biggest concern is that you only have one bonafide premium in your foward line (Buddy). You need to add 1 or more premiums into your forward line.
I would stay away from Dylan Grimes, the Tiges have earmarked him for a KPP role, which means low scores. I like Yarren has a unique pick.
Hmac and Sandi have durability clouds over them. Perhaps go for the Berger or McEvoy. Mids look solid, Basty my only concern. Could pay off though.

I wouldn’t get Ballantyne, Brown is probably better choice or anyone else. Apart from that some possible PODs with Bastinac and Sidebottom that have had the possibility to step it up to become good supercoach scorers. And definantly wouldn’t have Daw he is rookie listed and probably won’t play start of season and will only get games when either Goldstein, McIntosh get a season ending injury which is unlikely. Yes he is a good player but he isn’t on there list to even play at the moment. Also fyfe has injure concerns def an upgrade target of mine later in season best to go with Pav.

replace pattison with same rowe, find another rookie for your fwd line.
the fact your running 3 rook rucks means you need 3 reliable rooks that hopefully play plenty of games between them so you dont cop donuts

I initially tried to get a 10/10/10 balance in Prems, Mids & Rookies, but in the end I have tried to get balance in the bye rounds. I can cover the outs by using swingers, and a trade or two, by converting cash cows into guns. My concerns are Fyfe and Carazzo who are there for the swinging ability not nescessarily the best in their positions.

Any comments greatfully received.

Your structure is sound enough and I am happy to see a team with a different philosophy to the Guns/Rookies teams that seems to be the populist choice. You’ve given me some food for thought in the structure of my team. Cheers.

Backline is full of injury concerns with Johncock, Grimes and Lake I would take one maybe two of them and upgrade the others to Broughton or Scotland. Choose which of them to keep when watching the NAB cup. I wouldn’t have Winderlich he’s hardly in the best 22 at Essendon let alone a good supercoach scorer. Maybe upgrade him to Brown who is having a massive preseason.

I dont really want to take any chances in the mids and rucks so no messing around in there. Backs and fwds are the most unreliable point scoring wise. Thats where I will take my chances with 3 in the back and 3 in the fwds. All have potential to score big or flop.

Rucks: Mumford, Berger (Giles, Stephenson)

G’n’R stratergy with only Brown the concern. I count 14 players that will stay in my team throughout the year, and possible 1 more with Brown. That means I only need to upgrade 7 players to get the team I want.

Two defenders, three midfielders, and two/three forwards, which means I should use approximately 14-18 trades to do that leaving me with 6 trades to cover injuries and other problems that arise.

Any comments will be welcomed.

Only a couple of things you’d worry about.
A) How much Wilkes is going to play
B) If that is James McDonald on your pine, burn him. You’d be better off going with a rookie.
C) Keep an eye on Petrie, think he may still not be on all cylinders yet

NAB Cup Will sort all them out though.

Chappy is getting old prob look at someone else. And get Franklin and get rid of Goodes. Goodes is always a good upgrade target midyear as he always has slow starts but finishes strong, if you keep him he will still get pretty good scores.

Also Patton is injured prob won’t play for at least half the year maybe go with Brown. Fyfe has injury concerns maybe go with the proven performer of Pav. Everything else is good.

Secondly, bit worried about going in with one decent ruckman.
My aim is to use extra cash from rookies on trades to one ruck and a couple of forwards. But which 1st/2nd year & Mature aged rookies are going to play?

LIKE your def line & I have recently abandoned a 1/3 ruck strategy in favour of a more conservative 1/1/2–Louie/Kruezer/Giles/The Big O–my logic being that I (theoretically) will have 2 rucks available throughout the byes at all times.
You may want to consider your bye splits and whether this team conforms to your bye strategy.

Backs – Goddard (mid), Deledio (Mid), Heppell, M. Johnson (Fwd) Guthrie, Docherty, Mohr, (S) J. Ferguson (Fwd), T. Curran (Fwd)

Mids – GAJ, Swan, Selwood, I. Smith, Christensen (Fwd), Coniglio, (S) D. Pfeiffer (Fwd), B. Harvey (Def)

Forwards – Buddy, Fyfe (Mid), D.Martin (Mid), Butcher, Tomlinson (Def), Saad, Treloar (Mid) (S) Zorko (Mid), Smedts (def).

Obviously there is some work to do on the team. There is 52 days to go, so I will probably make about 495 changes. Any comments on the existing team would be appreciated.

Also sold Sandi and bought McEvoy. Pretty sure that I will overrule that decision prior to round 1.

Also sold I Smith and bought Gibbs. I think that it may be worthwhile.

IMO, unless your going for overall & yes….we all think we may be good enough, the bye rounds are going to affect everyone hard in at lease 1 of the 3 rounds. Unless you use 6-9 trades in those rounds to try & ovoid 0′s…..trades are to important come finals time.

$50,000 is awesome but bragging rights to ya mates for 12 months about whipping their arse’s in SC is worth way more……especially my mates!!!!!!

The 3 backman coming back from big injuries in 2011… Lake, Stratton & Grimes would personally worry me! I’d maybe pop Deledio back in defence, get rid of at lease one of those 3 & look at what money you have left for another resonable mid!

The rest looks pretty solid SP

Stratts will be okay, he played against the suns and our finals series.

“Given that Ben had missed so much footy, he certainly wasn’t at his most stellar best, however with a consistent summer and pre-season training we’re sure he will be a key plank in our back-half once again.”

Brown (90-100 on average) + Christensen (70-80) + Rockliff (110-120)

What is everyone’s premium structure for their teams? (e.g. 4 Defense prems, 3 Mid prems, 1 Ruck prem and 4 Forward prems)… I’m having trouble deciding whether or not my forward line needs 4 prems. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Ollie February 2, 2012 at 12:03 pm

Backline – 3 prems, 2 mids, 2 rooks

Midfield – 3 prems, 3 mids

Rucks – 1 prem, 1 rook

Forward – 3 prems, 3 rooks

But the mid-priced players I have are Brian Lake, Phil Davis, Michael Barlow, Adam Cooney, Alan Didak and Jonathan Brown so by the middle of the season, they could all be premiums … but they could also not be. Got to take the risk!

Not Pav. Goodes is getting old, but can still pull out big scores but a little inconsistently. Fyfe is still young so we don’t know exactly how he is going to perform week in week out. He also has a bit of a shoulder injury. Johnson is a bit like Goodes. Getting a bit older. Can pull out huge scores but sometimes down in the 50-70 mark.

In my mind I would go Goodes or Fyfe.

Pavlova!
Personally steering clear of Swan premiums because of there finals run, (Collingwood, WB, Hawthorn and Geelong. Ouch!) so that rules Goodes out for me.
Fyfe’s shoulders are concerning, and until I see him play a few NAB cup games I’m steering clear.
Johnson barley ever plays 22 games and is mighty inconsistent… Ageing body doesn’t help the way he plays football either.
Pav is so consistent (averages of 111, 108,115, 110, 99, 99 and 105 over the last 7 years) and surely once again he’s going to average 100+.

i dont think goodes will be to slow rnd 1 against the giants, or port in rnd 3..plenty of upside.
rnd 5 they have the hawks – he avg’s 125 against them
after that they have crows,tigers & melbourne – avg’s 106 against them.
then the doggies…he avg’s 131 against them.

goodes is a proven keeper/gun

everyone is hoping martin takes his game to new a level…in theory he may, but he may not…then you have to make a decision on whether to trade him or hold on and hope he finds form etc etc

bring in goodes, let him do his thing.

Dids might be worth the risk just keep an eye on him in NAB and see whats Bucks does with him coz he may go for young blood and weed out Dids. Otherwise get J Brown should kill it with a full preseason under his belt.

And yep those rucks are good maybe Giles instead of Witts coz it seems like Giles will play most weeks.

Try get Goodes in your forward line and get rid of Harlett for Barlow you know Barlow can get some really good scores while Port are just hopeless.

You’ll need to put one of either Dochety/Goddard/Deledio/Burg into your mids so they can swap with your defence- you’ve got ‘em all in your defence. Or put two of these guys into your mids because then they can both swap. Or just BJ into your mids because he’s better than all of the rest of the other 3… haha

MID: Abblet, Murphy, Mitchell, Barlow, Coniglio, Sheil (Pfeiffer, McDonald J)

Not a bad team. I would probably take out Lake and trade him for Billie Smedts from Geelong. I would also trade Phil Davis, he has some shoulder problems which will hinder him. Sidebottm is a concern but it’s a risk you could be willing to take

Overall a pretty good team, just needs a little bit of tweaking

Okay, heres the winning team ;)

by winning team i mean the foundation because its obviously going to be tweaked

DEF – Goddard, S.Fisher, Houli, J.Grimes, Lake, Conners, Clarke Emerg. Smedts, Wilkes

MIDS- GAJ, Mitchell, Selwood, Deledio, Hayes, Zorko, Emerg. Wingard, Shiel

RUCKS – Naitanui, Big O Stephensen, Giles, Derickx

FORWARDS – Franklin, NRoo, JBrown, Didak, Rohan, Porplyzia, Treloar Emerg. Dick , TWalsh

the game plan is a mixture of prems surrounded by rookies and blokes who I feel will be worth more then what they are now, either from coming back through injury whatever.

Rioli has bad hammies wouldn’t trust them. Chappy the same and getting old. Grimes also injury prone but probably the only one I would risk having in my team. The hammies constantly cause problems. Don’t know who Campbell is but Giles is sure to play most weeks.

Otherwise good team.

Hows everybody going?
There are a few players i am considering and i would love to hear your thoughts on them if thats possible.

Kieran Jack- about 430k
Always loved him as a player, my favourite player outside of my beloved bombers. But very cheap and still young. I think he is suited to SC because of his contested possesions. I wonder if he will be used as a tagger or not, anyone hear any news on his role for this year?

Jason Winderlich- 302,000k
Cheap for a guy that used to average high 90′s, maybe the injury could stunt his scoring capabilities or maybe he could get back to his best?

Watson- 574,000k

Steve Johnson- 581,000k

Thanks guys, your help would be priceless!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Jonesy February 2, 2012 at 9:08 pm

G’day mate.
Haven’t heard much at all about Jack since last season. You’d have to watch NAB.
I’ve currently got Winderlich as well, thinking he’s a good pick up this year.
Watson might be a bit expensive and I think there’s better players around his price.
Stevie J is a good choice for your 2nd or 3rd Premium in your forward line.

Decided to load up on backs and forwards as they are less likely to have cash cows where as all the money is in the midfield. So have have only picked a couple of guns in midfield for captains roll and then just loaded up.

You could do with 1 more mid prem. Swan or Penders.
Alternatively, you may get Barlow instead and use the rest of your cash to upgrade Lake into Heater, Suckling or someone of that ilk.
If you can’t go prem, then look @ Grimes, who admittedly, has durability issues.

It seems like you have a set and forget midfield personally don’t like it. Yes thats where you get the most points but i think you should get two rookies in there and upgrade one ruck and one defender. Reason why is because midfield rookies can be the best rookies gaing the most points and increasing in price the fastest ie Curnow, Libba and a few others (Barlow). Whereas forward and back rookies don’t increase in price as fast or get those good scores.

My plan is to start with three rookies in midfield (yes probably a bit light) but after a couple rounds il jump on those rookies that are going to sky rocket and get me a good amount of money plus get me good scores 90+ points. Now there may not be any good midfield rookies but you never know.

Yeah you make some good points Jimbo , I do think 13 rookies are enough . plus i wanted to set my midfield up from the get go , and to sacrifice my ruck to get a jammed pack midfield is a price i willing to pay . It all could change before round 1 .

Backline full of injury concerns (Lake, Grimes and Drummond) especially Drummond. Dump one or two. Prob best risk might be Grimes but im not getting him.

Probably better choices out there besides Folau.

Also weak ruck setup but each to there own could work just fine.

It’s probably a bit too hard to have an informed opinion at this point – wait until the pre-season games start and we get to see how and where McDonald is used. Coniglio will play and play on the ball, but McDonald is much cheaper and has experience on his side. It really will depend on how the Giants use McDonald – if they are using him off the bench in short bursts or tucking him into a fwd/back pocket then go with Coniglio. If they are using him in a more productive role, go for him.

I must admit Scatts I was very surprised by the overwhelmning support for Lenny over a browlow medalist in Coon-dog, but I trust the SCT coaches as they help me to my highest ever position in SC last year & that trust is going to continue in 2012!

LOL – they both have long-term dodgy knees … but Lenny also has a HEART :) A Brownlow undeserved is a woe-woe-din-full event. Controversial, but honest … and true. Lenny Hayes will come out on a wooden peg-leg in his last year if it helps the Saints – take that to the bank, and I’m a Richmond supporter !!

DOWNSIDE: Only played 11, 14 and 6 games in the last three years
UPSIDE: When has played he’s scored over 90 in 17 of his 31 career games (yes he is captain after only 31 career games) and has a career average of 86.6.

Thoughts??

Thumbs up – worth considering

G’day fellas, any feedback at all would be appreciated, bit unsure on a fair few areas.

Backs: Deledio, H Shaw, Carrazzo, Grimes, Malceski, Suban, Clarke (Morris, Schade)

Mids: Ablett (Capt), Swan (V/Capt), Mitchell, Selwood, Wingard, James McDonald (Shiel, T Mitchell)

Rucks: Sandi, Stephenson (Giles, Daw)

Forwards: Buddy, Martin, Robinson, McGlynn, Winderlich, Porplyzia, Saad (Walsh, A Hall)

Obviously taking a bit of a risk with Stephenson on the ground in the ruck, but he will play, and at 29, having been a gun in the VFL for a few years should score ok from the get-go. Willing to lose 50-60 points here to gain 150 from around the ground with more cash. Not sure about Malceski, Winderlich or the porpoise either.

Unless their name is Fyfe or Selwood or Dustin Martin or Tom Rockcliff or Scott Pendlebury. Essentially if a player is shit, don’t put them in your team in their second year (but I’m gonna go further now – if a player is shit, don’t EVER put them in your team, whether it’s their 2nd OR their 6th year) !!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

DamenS February 5, 2012 at 12:12 am

Anyway – who are you talking about ? Smedts and Duigan ? Seriously ? Smedts at base price and injured all of last year and is an absolute gun. You must have meant only Duigan – fair enough, he might not dramatically improve, but I know a lot about football and I wouldn’t be saying Duigan is a certainty not to improve a lot from last year … you’re REALLY going out on a limb there. Even if Duigan stayed at his current level, he would still be OK – a safe if uninspired choice.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

DamenS February 5, 2012 at 12:22 am

And if you’re thinking that David Swallow is not in the league of the aforementioned superstars (especially with the advantage of training and playing seniors an extra year in the AFL system) I think you’re wrong … I would agree that H. Bennell is a crap choice (but that’s not because he is a 2nd year player, it’s because he is a crap choice). I wouldn’t choose J Darling myself, but nor would I be surprised if he made me eat those words by the end of the season, and S Reid is just … OK … you’ve won me over BEAS – I should have looked at the WHOLE team before my drunken rant.

I SAID that good 2nd year players are fine, but Reid and Darling and Bennell ?? They’re not CRAP players, but give them some time, let’s say that second year MIDFIELDERS are fine (even if they are listed as forwards) – which is NOT an excuse to ask about Luke Tapscott as a back !!…

with all reports coming through it seems that sizzle needs to be considered. So in light of that I now have a dillema.

Dayne Beams or Cyril Rioli

further to that I am also tossing up between

Jobe Watson and Joel Selwood.

I feel that Watson was well on his way to a Brownlow last year till he did his hammies and his average was as good as any others till he did it but…well….Joelwood.

Come on SC world, give me a little advice here.

If only it was that easy. Love Sizzle and all advice points to a very good pre season and a lot of confidence in a good FULL year. Beams, allegedly, not one of Bucks’ favorites and still, IMO, has a bit to prove. So Cyril SO FAR…
Watson went berserk early last year until injury. IF he can get the injury management right I have seen nothing in the Bombers that would detract from him doing that again. Can Selwood cope with the captaincy AND the responsibility of being No 1 Mid? I figure there has to be an adjustment period for him to settle so Watson, then if injured, Selwood after a settling period? More growth in Watson as well (fiscally).

G’day punters… My 3rd SC season and after the previous two seasons I’m hoping to prove myself as a competitor. Rate my team and provide me with some advice as these days I’m struggling to find sound advice from people who know the game.

Deledio, Yarran, J Russell, Weller, Tambling, Hansen, Conca, M Clarke (sub) & Ellis (sub)

Abblett, Judd, Goddard, Watson, D Swallow, J McDonald, C Smith (sub) & E Kavanagh (sub)

Kreuzer, Giles, Derickx (sub) & Big O (sub)

Franklin, Martin, Watts, J Brown, Reid, Rohan, Porplyzia, Zorko (sub) & Smedts (sub)

I think at this stage my question I have to ask (other than any useful feedback) is whether I should replace Ellis with Sierakowski?
Thanks for any useful advice and good luck to all in 2012.

Ok first not to be mean, backline is worst i have seen, where are the stars lids is the only one?? keep tambling as he will go better this year he cant get any worse. Mids is alright but d.swallow? there is better options out there.
Rucks are weak you need a cox or sandi or mummy etc…
Forward i read the first 2 names and thought this is alright and then WATTS???? you dont mean that dud melbourne little boy jack watts do you ?
and reid is not a good sc scorer and porps is injury prone and then rohan yes he will be alright this year but he wont go up in price and will only average 60-80 this year there is better value out there,What i would do it swap porps and watts and get some one better around the 400k mark and downgrade rohan to a rookie who will make you more money and will average around the same as rohan 50-70 mark…… its all up to you big fella good luck 2012

No that’s not mean at all as I said it’s just what I need so thank you. My logic in picking the team I have is… I believe that the mid’s in the backline are all capable of increasing in value. I can understand that Watts is a gamble but he showed good signs towards the end of last year and he’s put a bit of size on over the past 12 months so it’s time he consistantly produced rather than just show glimmers of hope.

yeah and i mean thats what SC is all about luck and praying that players go good and you never know this might be the year watts shines, but yeah as i said just downgrade some of those mid ranged players into potential cash cows and upgrade some mid rangers to some guns, i would probes be looking at swapping swallow out for, hayes, barlow or cooney mate

I think I have come up with a pretty good team here and also have considered the byes not choosing more than 2 prems in each position. I think its a pretty good team. I finished in the 300`s last year and looking to improve. Main side is there but rookies are subject to change during NAB.

B: Goddard Deledio Broughton Grimes Lake Clarke Smedts
Wilkes Morris
M: Ablett Swan Selwood Murphy Clifton Shiel
Horsely McDonald
R: Sandi HMac
Big O Giles
F: Franklin Goodes Martin Sidebottom Porpas Pfeiffer Zorko
Treloar Walsh

Looking forward to hearing what people think

Cheers for the comment Catta, hopefully they put in strong performances in the NAB and are upgraded!!! If not Horsely out for Mitchell and Pfeiffer out for Rowe

I like it – I like it a lot. Grimes and Hmac are both risks – but you already knew that and they are cheap for their potential (Porpas is also a risk but he’s so cheap there’s nothing to think about).

ok backs are alright but broughton was used more as a stopping/ kick back defender last year but new coach could see him new role, wouldnt be suprised if he moved up the wing or small forward this year,
Mids:All good
Ruck: Sandi cant go wrong but mcintosh?? really think north can go with 3 big men. Goldstein will hold down the ruck and petrie up forward will have a spell in the ruck as well but never know.
fwd: Good but F#ck porps off, every year i always get him and say nah this year he will go good, every year im head butting a brick wall !!! other then that good team

Cheers Rizy, was tossing up between broughton and shaw???? McIntosh at that price must be looked at carefully and he will be used as an upgrade not a keeper. I want Sandi and mummy but both have the bye in rd12. Hello upgrade in rd 12 and I have used the money I saved by choosing HMac to be able to get my 4 prem mids. Im actually a crows fan and I know he good porpas can be…. but at this price its worth the punt hoping that his shoulder can last half a season for a decent price rise and be upgraded mid season.

I would go with shaw, leon gone they will use shaw more as that running attacking defenders and thats good for sc. I love porps as a player but i just think he will never get those shoulders right but you never know good luck mate

B: I think Goddard must be in the backs. not sure about tambling. Burgoyne is an interesting one.
M: I think you need the true SC stars in the mids.
R: Renouf is risky but could be good
F: No didak, franklin over rioli goodes over okeefe, but once again thats just my opinion.

choosing the proven prems especially in the mids is important!!!

I went with goddard in the middle to provide that DPP and i think tambling will prove something this year.
mids i went with players that will get me the ave 100 but can also shoot out high 100+. I was thinking franklin over riloi but then looked at hawks draw and it dont look good for buddy. and rioli is going to fire this year bar injury. didak is my main concern might just prove to be the risk that pays off or not. and goodes was just a little to high in price for me when rok will get the same score and lil cheaper cheers for help

Josh I would use deledio in you backline to free up another spot in your midfield and bring in a mid/def rookie or up grade bastinac into a murphy.

Sick of the questions yet and want some actual feedback?

Looks really solid PA. Injury would be my biggest worry for your forward line. Brown is risky but he should stand up. Sizzle and The Llama I’m not so sure about. So they’ve changed Sizz’s running (and please, please Football Gods let that fix the problem) but I still think they will nurse him through at stages. The Llama’s knees are gone and his hammy was ripped apart. I think at his age, with those issues and the style of game he relies on his best has past him by.

Heard some talk about Shaw being injured for the start of the year too but not 100% on that one.

Thanks for the feedback Fishy,
- Brown just had bad luck last year and at his price I think he’s a steal.
- NRoo just has a higher scoring ceiling than most of the other gun fwds imo, a risk I’m willing to take.
-Sizzle has been flying so far this pre-season, get on.
- Haven’t heard anything about Heater thus far, guess we’ll just have to wait till the NAB.

Docherty was the other one I forgot to mention. I want him in as well but his preseason has been limited so might be a late starter. Another for the NAB watchlist.

I heard Docherty is out of the NAB but should be fit for round 1, so you’ll have to show a bit of faith if you want him in your side.

Looks good mate. Notice no Brake in there – all reports I’ve seen say he hasn’t even made it back on the track so far which makes it hard to see him playing Rd 1.
i still have a ? over Broughton. Read that he was training with the forward group which scares me with Rossy’s history.

Needs a bit work to be blunt mate.

First off get some genuine guns in your midfield. Always the best scorers so you want the best going.

Dump the following – Higgins (injuries burn coaches every year) Tippet (dud) Falou (wrong game) Dick (won’t play until later in then year if at all, worth keeping an eye on though) Dawson (MASSIVE dud – especially in SC terms).

Try losing some of your mid-price players (Rohan, Porplyzia, Watts, Kruezer, Davis, Dangerfield, Waters, Vince). Turn two or three of them into instant cash with taking a punt on rookies. With the extra coin you will be able to turn a few into true guns.

You’ll be loving the look of your team once you lose the middle-of-the-roaders, get in some kids (who are golden to watch grow and bring in the big coin through the year) and get in some superstars.

Any one considering looking at Jarrod Harrow (GCS) as their fourth defender. Has hit the 80 game barrier and turns 24 this year. This may be the year to knuckle down following a years holiday on the coast. His average dropped 10 points from the previous two years so an increase of 15 ppg will be 90+ average. Played all 22 games last year and although GCS have not recruited heavily they have been togther for a full season and two pre seasons.
