Its a ripper, Mitch. There’s not a lot of in-between players – for the most part they’re either superstars or rookies. You’re taking a risk with the amount of rookies you have onfield but its one worth taking. Could be a real handful for competitors. If I was going to give one piece of advice I’d say downgrade Shaw for Hunt, Malceski or Ladson and upgrade one of your forward rookies.

My understanding of dpp’s is that, whilst you need a dpp in each position to be able substistute them, they may be more useful than your first impression. ie

Ruck- Sandilands, Clark, Warnock, Lobbe

Forwards- Roo, Pav, Harvs, Tippet, Hall, Giansiracusa, Rockcliffe, Peterson, Pods.

Now lets say Clark gets injured and is expected to be out for two to three weeks. Usually you would just sit him out and hope warnock/lobbe is playing the next week so you don’t cop too much of a points loss or, gods forbid, make a trade.

With the new dpp rule you can switch Lobbe (R/D) with Tippett (D/R), have Tippett play onfield in the ruck and sit Clark on the ruck bench. With Lobbe now in your forward line have the option of whether you would prefer to play Lobbe, Peterson or Pods onfield (likely whoevers playing that week). So now instead of just having warnock or lobbe to fill the void you also have Peterson and Pods.

Simply it gives you more options as to which reserve you want to replace the injured player with (especially useful near the start of season when a lot of afl teams are still getting their rookies sorted) and saves a trade when, with Clark only being injured for 2-3 weeks, you don’t really want to make one.

Having only recently stumbled upon this site, I’ve since found myself (im)patiently awaiting the latest post. The constructive critiquing of teams submitted for rating has offered a lot of food for thought, and helped shape the current nucleus of my team.

If I had submitted my team every day over the past month or so, it would look quite different each day, and is likely to change significantly before the first ball is bounced to mark the season opening.

The constant tinkering has left me wondering if I have actually improved the team, or if I have made some terrible decisions. As such, I’d love your thoughts:

Defenders: Gilbert, Hodge, H. O’Brien, Kennelly, Malceski, Ladson, Greenwood
Emg: Maguire, P. Davis

Mids: Swan, Mitchell, Harvey, Higgins, Masten, Cotchin
Emg: Trengrove, Moles

Rucks: M. Clark, Warnock
Emg: Bellchambers, Skipper

Forwards: J. Brown, Franklin, LeCras, Tippett, T. Cloke, J. Kennedy, Medhurst
Emg: Rusling, G. Rohan

Risks: I have taken quite a few deliberate risks during selection, which could either make me look very foolish, or pay dividends nicely. Malceski, Ladson, Cotchin, Warnock and Rusling have all had their injury woes, but given their respective quality, would not be found at the bargain prices had they not. If each remain fit, it’s hard to see their stock not rising rapidly.

Weakness: The ruck department is definitely one area I have skimped on. Having said that, I’m fairly confident that each player will get game time throughout the season .

One area a team can be made or broken is with the emergencies. I have followed, with close interest, the impressive crop of young midfielders currently making names for themselves in the NAB cup/challenge matches. Any one of 4 or 5 first year players could easily slot into their respective teams come round one, and this is one area I have not completely settled on.

As a pies supporter (yes, I do realize your criticism may no longer be constructive) I believe Harry O’Brien is set for a fantastic year. At very least, his price will stay steady, barring injury. I’m not completely set on Travis Cloke as yet, but he’s fit, has a point to prove and has put some distance between himself and some off field dramas which would adversely affect anybody’s psyche. His goal kicking lets him down, so it’s a good thing that this is not the only area points can be scored. One of the best contested marks in the league should increase his average this year, I hope.

This leaves $64,300 in the bank. Where should I be spending this?
