Frank’s Team

defenders
Enright, Duffield, Adcock, Mattner, Waite, Stewart, Ladson
em: Howard, Davis

midfield
Mitchell, Corey, Gibbs, Vince, Mundy, Connors
em: Barlow, Moles

rucks
Tippett, Naitanui
em: Warnock, Lobbe

forwards
Harvey, Johnson, Gray, Knights, Hall, Ballantyne, Wonaeamirri
em: Rockliff, Lynch

Decent structure here Frank. You’ve got a good mix of youngsters and proven performers, not too much cash sitting on your bench, and a handful of captain options. I just think you’re taking too much of a risk with guys who haven’t yet played a lot of footy who will take time to get up to speed. Waite, Vince and Wona all fall into this category. A healthy Knights is a good selection but he’s injured right now. And you’ve named a couple of blokes on your front and backline benches who could struggle to get on the park – be sure to check the list of R1 teams before setting Howard and Lynch in concrete. 7/10.

Defenders – Enright, Duffield, and Mattner are all solid selections. The reason Adcock missed 9 games last year was a fractured kneecap so for me that puts to rest any worries about a recurrence. As much as I love Waite, he only played his first game for the year last week meaning he’ll be coming into the regular season underdone. I think you should hold off on him. Paul Stewart was in and out of the side last year for a 54 average. I think there are better options available. Howard is an interesting pick. Played really well to win Glenelg the U-18 championship but the Dogs backline is pretty much settled don’t you think?

Mids – I reckon that with Sewell going down on the weekend, Sammy Mitchell’s numbers will be negatively impacted as he will now be picking up the #1 tag. Vince is a good player but hasn’t played since Feb 13 because of a sore glute and won’t play against Carlton on Friday meaning like Waite he’ll be going into the season underdone. Mundy plays every game but only averaged 80-odd last year. And I like Connors – topped Richmond’s scorers in their one NAB Cup game.

Rucks – Naitanui is a bit of a risk but the style of footy he’s playing is bloody exciting. I’d love to watch WC games where he’s going berserk knowing I had him. Everyone else is fine here.

Forwards – You’ve got some injury worries here. Knights has a foot stress fracture and is due for a return in R3 so has to go. And Wona has had a succession of hammy strains and only played his first game for the year last week in Adelaide. He recently said of season 2010: “Hopefully I can play 15-plus [matches], which would be good for me” – I know he’s cheap but you’ve got to be confident that the guy you spend your hard earned on is going to play more games than that. Hall and Ballantyne have been tearing up the NAB Cup. Gray had a good game on the weekend but that’s been his only game so far this year. If you trust Stevie J’s hips he’s a bargain. Personally, I don’t. Lynch played well in the VFL last year but like Howard, could struggle to get a game in the seniors given the strength of St Kilda’s forward line.

OK again I’m going to be quick because the backlog is really starting to pile up. The issues I have here are: Silvagni (probably won’t get a spot), Kerr and Wells (consistency), Rioli (huge risk with an OP cloud over his head), and Waite (underdone). Other than that, good structure. 7/10.

I’ll just be quick on this one Irish – it looks excellent. Highest score so far this season – 9.5/10. The issues I have with it are Silvagni in the backline – I don’t think he’s going to get much game time this year (but I could totally be proven wrong on that) and Henderson in the forward line – early indications are that he’s nowhere near the standard Blues supporters would like him to be at (but again time could prove me wrong – I REALLY hope it does). Great mix of DPP’s, you’re paying too much for GAJ but there’s your captaincy sorted, no injuries (for the moment anyway), lots of cash cows. Really, really good job.

Has Joel Corey’s days of a supercoach superstar dried up?

Big fan of Corey, but with GAJ, Bartel, Selwood, Chappy and Kelly chopping out in the middle, where does that leave him?

That line-up is no different to last year’s and the year before and he still managed to average 108 in ’09. I still see him as a viable, if somewhat expensive, option for your midfield.

Righto Matt, here goes:
Backs – all good, have most of those guys myself
Mids – as good as Armitage’s average is (97.33) he still hasn’t cemented his spot in the team (3 games last year). Risky. As is 3 first year players onfield. I know you’ve got GAJ in there but do you need 3? Brennan’s consistency has always been his downfall – grab Rich and save yourself $20k.
Rucks – Leuenberger is an injury risk. Upgrade him to Nic Nac.
Forwards – Brennan again?, Brown I want to see work with Fevola before going him myself. Rest are good.

7/10

thanks, motts. I have brennan in my forward line and he is one of my risks. As a brisbane supporter i know all about his inconsistency, but suppose this is more of heart than head decision as i know he needs to be consistent this year for us to go far. Also he is meant to be playing a lot more in the midfield, which usually helps consistently. It’s the same with Leuenberger, but i may switch him to either Nic or Seaby.

Flattery will get you everywhere, Stretch.
Backline – Moore shouldn’t be on the field. Bench him for Dare, who will struggle to get a game early, and pick someone more reliable on field.
Mids – Muphy is underdone but if you’re prepared to put up with a couple of games of substandard scores for him he’ll reward you in the end. Dalziell hasn’t impressed me yet this preseason.
Rucks – Charman is cheap but has already gone down in the pre-season. That spells danger to me. Especially when you’ve risked Hille on field.
Forwards – Waite is underdone too but like Murphy, if he remains injury free, will reward your patience. Franklin will miss the first round through suspension but should be a ripper after that. Adelaide are expecting big things out of Walker and his fitness is at the level of a midfielder. Again I wouldn’t have a first yearer on the field. Kick TDL to the bench and upgrade that last spot to a M/F DPP – someone like a Dangerfield or Ziebell.

Hope that helps champ.

Supercoach Superstar March 10, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Motts,
If this isn’t 10/10 then you need to be certified!!!!! Will score heavily and still has the cash cows to upgrade when Gaj, Goddard and others drop in value…..
Backs:
Goodwin, Enright, Hodge, Gram, Malceski, Hunt, Greenwood, Waters, Davis
Mids:
Selwood, Bartell, Mitchell, Gibbs, Masten, Martin, Barlow, Banner
Rucks:
Sandilands, Natainui, Warnock, Skipper
Fwds:
Reiwoldt, Franklin, Gray, Hall, Dangerfield, Campbell, Rohan, Rockliff, Posiadily

No Gaj because it’s fiscally impossible for his price to remain or rise unless he averages above 140 right from the first game.

With an alias like Supercoach Superstar I’m surprised you haven’t whacked yourself into your own midfield, champ. I admit its a damn good team and I can’t fault you on your structure but based solely on personal feelings about players I can only give it a 9.5/10.
Here’s why:
Greenwood only averaged 44 last year. I assume he’s one of your cash cows but he has only scored 60 and 66 in 2 games this year. His price won’t be going through the roof based on that kind of performance.
Sewell going down means Mitchell will pick up the main tag – its not a massive thing but I traded him out of mine because of it.
Campbell has had a couple of good NAB Cup games (80 & 76) but has a history of hammy injuries. If you’re a Roos fan and have the dough, get Ziebell.
Franklin will miss R1 through suspension. If you’re happy to wear that, no issue. Me? I’m going for the $50k on offer to the person with the most points for the year which means bringing him in later.

And nothing is fiscally impossible if Gazza continues playing in 2010 like he did in 2009. Grabbing him now saves you a trade (or maybe more if you need to do some shuffling to accomodate his salary) later and gives you an automatic captain. What’s $100k between friends anyway?

Supercoach Superstar March 10, 2010 at 9:21 pm

Thanks Motts,
A 9.5 from you 2 weeks out is a reasonable start.
You make fair points. I know Gaj went up last year but consider that if he has even one week below 140 early in the season, you will be looking at a price drop of around 28,000 come round 3. If he goes at an average of 140 for the entire season which is what his current price represents then even still his price will drop by about the same amount over the first 5 weeks anyway….the great dillema!!!!!
Mitchell is a fair point although pretty hard to tag the bloke at the bottom of the pack.
Greenwood and Campbell are food for thought- thanks.
Don’t see the point burning a trade for Buddy with him only being out 1 round.

Would you mind rating my team. The risky players I feel are Wona, Walker & Hille. I hope I have the right balance though. Still $175K to play around with if needed for upgrades.

Backs

Mids

Backs – I don’t know if Dempsey is going to get much better but that’s only personal opinion.
Mids – You do know Judd won’t be playing the first three games? I understand Judd-love, hell I’ve even got a bit of it, but that stretches the relationship just a little too far. Walker is looking unbelievable after a few weeks away from the team and has something to prove. They say his shoulder is good as gold. Worth a punt.
Rucks – I wouldn’t be putting Hille AND Charman in the one team.
Forwards – you already know how I feel about Wona.

$175k is a hell of a lot in the bank at the beginning of the season. I’d spend about $100k of that to upgrade one of your rucks or your last forward position.

thanks for the info Motts. Will take it on board. Re Judd, I’m in it for the league postion more so than the overall so decided not to use a trade on him later. I think I might just burn some of that cash on replacing Wona. I do however think that Charman could be a good punt on a cash cow. thanks for rating

Raines will see alot of game time at the paddle pop lions, hopefully he stays in one piece ha ha. According to Paul Roos Bradshaw should be right for round 1, if he isn’t maybe put in josh kennedy from the eagles and have 50k to play around with. But if there is a fit bradshaw watch out,cos he can easily get 80+ goals this year with no brownie getting in his way. Varcoe will be playing in the midfield so i can see him picking up alot of contested possession with his speed. As for buddy 1 week on the pine might do him some good, but there a hard road ahead with the cats then the dogs, so mabe wait till after R3 and pick him up cheap ah.

Backs – Looks good, make sure Pearce gets elevated before locking him in but that looks more and more likely (see recent Freo LTI post)
Mids – I’d move Goddard in the backline and put a specialist into your mids – will earn more points for you in the long run, otherwise good
Rucks – Its a risk but I like the 2 young guns combo, bench is a little light though.
Forwards – Reimers experienced quad tendon problems last year and only played 9 games averaging 64 – risky choice. Rockliff shouldn’t be on the field – bench him and trade Gumby up to someone not so injury prone.

Also done some wrangling to free up cash for Ziebell in the forward line instead of Gumbleton.

Nice work.

Backs – Heath or Rhyce? Either is ok but I prefer Heater. You’ve probably seen what I’ve said about HO in other posts. Interesting that you haven’t selected any of the other cash cows going around this year: Kennelly, Ladson, Hunt, Malceski but the guys you’ve got are all serviceable.
Mids – Beams AND Sidebottom? Like your Pies do you? Mitchell may get tagged out of it now Sewelly’s gone down for a few weeks.
Rucks – solid
Forwards – No issues here as long as you’re aware about Buddy not playing in R1.

Not bad news at all!

Thanks for dropping past the site, Maree. Hope this all helps:
Backs – Heath or Rhyce? Either is ok but I prefer Heater. Armfield does a great job but he’s more of a tagger and traditionally they don’t score well – trade him out for rebounding defender – Josh Hunt is a bargain. Lake averaged 92 last year because he went forward a fair bit. With Big Bad Barry joining the Dogs he’ll spend a lot more time in defence so his scores are likely to drop, trade him out for someone like Sam Fisher, Jason Gram, or if you can afford him Corey Enright. I don’t know how much game time Allen is going to get so I’d get him out and put Maguire on the bench.
Mids – Burgoyne is injured already so get rid of him – Mark McVeigh or Chris Masten are pretty good options to replace him with. Hartlett isn’t a bad option but its a perfectly good strategy to start a rookie in your midfield. I’d bring Martin on and trade HH down to one of the other rookies that has been showing a bit of flair this pre-season – think Barlow, Banner, or Shuey.
Forwards – I’m really not a fan of Gumby, think its too big a risk to include him. And Ballantyne is another bloke who’s already injured so kick TDL to the bench, grab another first year player to accompany him (Podsiadly and Rockliff are both popular choices) and choose another experienced player for your last on-field spot. Have a look at some other the other teams that have been posted for suggestions – there’s a lot to choose from and I’m not sure what you’ve got to spend.

Good luck against the blokes – hope you kick some butt!

I like your thinking re Dual Position Players (DPPs) but as some others have pointed out on the site, don’t sacrifice points just for the sake of having one. Here’s some thoughts on your team:

Backs – Carrazzo looks set to be played in a tagging role this year which will kill his numbers, I wouldn’t risk it. Its a little too early for Waite as well, I reckon his price will drop even lower than it is now as he gets back to full strength – hold off on him.
Mids – All look good
Rucks – No issues
Forwards – All good

All up its a pretty solid team. Goddard and Gram are both excellent D/M options but I’d keep both of them in your backline.

That’s an excellent team, steve. You’ll go far with it. Other than pointing out that Franklin won’t be playing R1 I can’t see any real weaknesses with it given you’ve Abletted your midfield.

Hey BB, how’s life post-Angelina?
Backs – McMahon will see a lot of it in the Richmond backline and is in the last year of his contract which provides impetus to do well, I just think he can be a little wasteful with it. Carrazzo may play a tagging role this year – be careful with him. Garland has a foot stress fracture and hasn’t played a preseason game – that rules him out of my team. Be sure Roberton gets the call up from the rookie list before choosing him.
Mids – Palmer’s injured, sub him out. You could probably use another big name here. I’d be tempted to upgrade Kerr. Wells has disappointed me every one of the last 3 years. Thank God a mate talked me out of bringing him in 2 years ago. Think you could bring Martin onto the field too.
Rucks – I’m ok with all these.
Forwards – Little light on here too. You didn’t mention whether you had any spare change but I’d like to see a couple of big names up front – take your pick from Roo, Pav, Goodes, SJ, Higgins.

Opinion on having both murphy and gibbs in midfield?

I don’t have a problem with it at all. Both have come into consideration for me. And with Judd out the first three rounds they’ll see plenty of it.

Sorry, A Walker, BBB and under potential cash cows as are the rookies for obvious reasons. Think Brett Jones has gone under the radar given his record compared to Ladson/Hunt/Greenwood/Malceski/Kennelly.
