Its the final countdown. You’ve been mulling over it for close to 2 months, made countless changes, and maybe even thrown it up on here a couple of times already.

Or maybe you’ve always been a little nervous about unveiling your team in such a public place.

Either way, if you’re looking for last minute advice on your team structure, who you’ve named or your bye strategy, throw the boys in here and let the helpful and charmingly witty SCT community run the specs over ‘em.

Backs: Your premiums are top quality and should be in the highest averaging defenders at years end, though i personally am a little concerned with Scotland’s age and potential role this year but dont let that scare you off from pickign him. I think that even a that price there are better options around than Bower, coming off a year from hell and a possibly bigger lockdown role.

Mids: Great line can’t fault it.

Rucks: Another good line, my only concern with the three rookie lineup now is that Stephenson hasnt been all that impressive this pre-season.

Forwards: Another good line, 3 starting rookies is a little conerning but i understand it as there isn’t much value in mid priced forwards this year. Your rookies are all good choices.

Your forwards look a bit thin… Pfeiffer is a rookie listed player and neither Saad nor Smedts are guaranteed a start in round one. You could be left scrambling at the last minute to get a side on the park. In addition Dylan Shiel is a great pick but he is very unlikely to start in round one and I’d be looking at Miles or McDonald and maybe picking up Shiel later on.

Backs – A fairly unique backline, without Goddard and includes Suckling, Broughts and Hargrave all together, could work. I think there may be better options for rookies than Townsend however.

Mids – Parker is a good smoky depending on the role he plays. Nice to see someone with A.Kennedy, Sheeds loves him at GWS and apparently he will play a similar role to Enright. All good premo’s with a unique in Watson.

Rucks – I dont mind the 3 rookie rucks but the risk is there with Stephenson under performing in the pre-season.

Forwards – All great premo options, (i actually have the same first 5), your rookie choices are good also though i worry Kerridge may be wearing the vest early.

Mids are excellent, obviously. I reckon Watson will end up to 5 mids this year so I think he is well under at 570k. I think your choice of mid priced players is pretty good (Parker, Sidebottom, Porps), however, I reckon if you can get Malceski in for Hargrave & Clarke and find a $113,200 def you like + the $40,000 you have left, you’ll have a very nice side.

Does anyone have any info on Tory Dickson from Bulldogs. Mature aged player and coach said should play round 1.

15 disposals, 5 marks, 6 tackles and 1 goal 1 against a good Geelong team with a DT score of 89.

Will he get early games and score reasonably??

I’ve been waiting to see Parker put in a team, I really think he will do pretty well this year, although he’s not in my team, I’ve decided to go with no risks this year. I’ve had plenty of mid pricers going in and out of my team all preseason but finally come to a decision to go strict guns and rookies. I also am just picking the guns who I think will get the best scores for the first half of the season, with the byes having no impact on my choices, I’ll beable to find a way to work around the byes when they come around

Have got Goddard in the midfield so as have a Mid/Def DPP available with Deledio and S Burgoyne in the backs. Not sure if this is the right move or not? Maybe should move God back to Def in place of Burgoyne and look for another premium mid?

Concerned about Koby Stevens (will he get enough game time), is Parker the right M5 choice and do I need another premium forward?

Also considering Rowe as a DPP Ruck with Hale, though concerned with Rowe’s NAB cup form!

I think D Smith is better choice then Smedts/Saad.

And Waters too injury prone and for that price I would want him to become a keeper which IMO he wont be in the top 10 defenders by years end. Waters to Lake would be good swap and yes Lake is injury worry but for his price he doesn’t need to become a keeper therefore come the byes Lake should have gone up roughly $200K sell him of for either rookie or premium. Also Lake has possiblity of becoming a keeper at least more of a chance then Waters.

Im not a fan of HMac don’t think your going to get enough points or price rise from him unless Goldy gets injured.

I like your choice of Davis could be very good move. And apart from that your team is pretty good.

Well from what i hear they are very happy with Magner and Couch’s progress through NAB and the pre-season. I had him pinned in as a possible starting 21/sub but with Sylvia down for the first few weeks, i wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing the role of marking half forward/midfielder.

Got a Backline dillema. Currently
Deledio, Broughton, Lake, ????, Ellis, Bugg, Mohr (Smedts & Morris)

Planning on sacrifising the backline at the start of the year.

Have $522,400 current thoughts are:
Bock (suck up the first 2 weeks then have a good P.O.D afterwards)

Hargrave (leaves $242,400 in kitty allows for porps to be upgraded rnd 5-7 to a premium Mid with Fyfe going forward. Basing on the shoulder will go at some stage)

Tomlinson/another rookie (Gives more cash for later)

Rest of team
Mid: Ablett, Selwood, Watson, Fyfe, Gray, Clifton (D Smith & Magnet)

Rucks Mummy, Redden (Giles, Big O)

Forwards: Franklin, Johnson, Pav, Martin, Porps, Couch (Weedon & Hall)

Or any other ideas?

With my strict G’n'R strategy I think I will need that extra cash to maybe use around Round 5 to grab the best gun I can get without having to watse a trade downgrading AND upgrading.

Not sure you need so much cash on hand Ollie. A key strength of the GnR strategy is to make $ on your rookies. I’d spend some of that in DEF.

I dunno about cox though. Hes getting on in age. Nic nat is young and improving by the minite, and I have a feeling the eagles will try and get a little more from the fijian this year and put him in the ruck more. This will force coxy down to full forward where he is less likely to rack up the points he usually gets from the midfield…. But i dont know.

Cox is still pretty good forward takes massive marks and kicks quite well. So yes less points in midfield but more goals and marks means big scores anyway. He looks fit and is playing as well as any year so I’m starting with him.

Mummy Sandi/Cox
Mummy top, Cox I think will be strong early mid season but Mummy & Sandi will pass late season (Sandi pending turf toe issues)
I haven’t selected Cox on this basis as I am more looking towards league win & with my gut feel Cox won’t be in the top couple of rucks for the last quater of the season.
but that’s my opinion & come finals if West Coast will make them he will be rested as opposed to other younger players.

Love your midfield premiums IMO top 5 midfielders come season end wll be Pendl, Swan, Ablett, Murphy and Selwood with Watson being a big chance to round off top 6 if his hammies stay strong.

Morris would have played against Geelong but had a family wedding if he played that game everyone would say he is a lock with Ellis. Morris has been labeled more of a shut down roll player while Ellis having kicking duty out of backline but what Morris has is a mature body. I don’t mind having both either as they have the last of the three byes which is perfect as after first or second bye you can trade both/either for a rookie/premium that has already had there bye therefore saving you a possible donut.

Yagmoor seems to have lots of competition with Clarke and Buckley for that backline position IMO.

Good honest team that should score consistently across the season. Not sure I agree with your selection of premium midfielders.. IMO Watson are upgrade M5 and M6 targets. Watson has injury issues and Priddis rarely scores those really big numbers. I’d be thinking Murphy or Swan would be more certain choices as keepers that pump the odd 150 into your total.

Like the look of it. Goodes is one i’ve been tossing up about. Started with him in previous years and traded him out, then he’s come good again! Scotland is one i’m not sure about – had a good year last year, just not sure if he’ll repeat given his age – could be a candiate for a bit of resting. James McD is a conundrum for me too – will he get regular full games or be a candidate for the sub type roles?

solid team mate, not sure about hurn, someone like Heppel might be a better choice at that price.. mcqualter could also be a risk, gary rohan is a good bet for a break-out year for about 50k more.. goodes might have a slow start (yet again) so would suggest getting dustin martin in for him then maybe rory sloane from the crowns in ur midfield.

also i would downgrade scotland to shaw

McQualter is an interesting choice. At St.Kilda he was dominant at VFL level but was never able to make a big impact in the top grade. In his best year, 2009, he was a regular in the side as a defensive forward but was very rarely a good scorer as he never got a lot of the ball and tends to choke in front of goals. While I think he might get games at GC in the midfield as a replacement for Harris I’m not so sure he’ll score enough points to be a keeper or even a good cash cow. I’d switch D Smith into the forwards and load up with another rookie midfielder. By the way I think Miles is a really good pick… he and Shiel are ball magnets.

I know people love dangerfield and yes he can be explosive, but i just dont think he will avg enough. One of the big disapointments from last year i reckon. Apart from that a very good forward ling.
Backline – excellent,
Mids – Boyd and Mitchell a very similar players and their kicking eff can let them both down, which means 35 poss for only 100-110 points

agree completely. ive had danger in and out all preseason, its him or gary rohan, but rohan has been quiet and danger impressive so far. thinking of downgrading to either porps or rohan and upgrading hargrave.

ive also liked the look of malceski again this year, he was a gun before his injuries and will most likely make his way into my team before thursday ;)

The whisper is that Dangerfield will play more as an outside midfielder this year and could be finally about to fulfill his potential. IMO he’s a very good F5 selection in a season that is pretty light on for reliable forwards. This is a good opening round side as long as at least one of your rookie forwards gets selected.

Backline a little light I would downgrade one of Watson/Boyd and upgrade Smedts to premium defender maybe Goddard/Scotland.

Big O to Redden

Dell’Olio still needs to be elevated so keep eye on that.

Otherwise good team very strong premiums and good rookies.

No Goddard? You’re dropping around 30 points a week average in your backline. Only two guaranteed premium defenders in the line up. Maybe you’ll make the points up with Cox/Mumford… or maybe Cox is overpriced and will be cheaper by round 5… only time will tell but IMO Goddard is a lock.

No worries mate.

Few too many mid pricers for me but its a popular strategy.
I’d go Lake/Magner/Kreuzer from those options. You could also downgrade the expensive mid rookies and try to squeeze one more gun in.

P.S. Its a slash, not a lash

The slash goes back to the days of ancient Rome. In the early modern period, in the Fraktur script, which was widespread through Europe in the Middle Ages, one slash (/) represented a comma (,) while two slashes (//) represented a dash, but neither should be confused for a hash (#) and certainly never a lash (?) #justsayin

Slash, not hash, or not lash!

Taken the advice on board with Kruzer, Magner only if elevated in but I want to take a risk on Hargrave he looks to good at that price since everyone is going for lake I will take Hargrave.

$176 000 in bank with Magner in the team
$157500 in the bank with Ledger currently in the team

Anything else now Omen?

$229,500 left in the bank. I really think I need at least $100k-$150k in the bank to upgrade when the season starts. Im a bit uneasy about the GWS choices, and the amount of them. Also, whats your opinion on getting Rowe in the foward line?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 3

The round 11 bye is going to kill your forward line. You’ve got too many GWS and too many rookies who are borderline selections. Trying to hang onto your cash is counterproductive if you are going guns/rookies. IMO you need to buy one more viable forward as a bare minimum.

IMO you have too many trades to make before this side will be competitive by which time a couple of injuries may well kill off your season. You could end up very rich, 10th in your league and out of trades. IMO you need to buy about 6 more premiums now as keepers to stabilize this team.

Either Pav or Boyd. Probably Pav just for that M/F but would still prefer him in the forward line.

Way too many midpricers and injury worries. If thats your stratergy then thats fine. IMO midpricers either need to become keepers if they are priced above $300K or be good cash cows if they are priced below $300K.

So Grimes, Lake, Davis, Hunt, Masten, Sloane, Smith, Christensen and Dahlhouse need to be considered.

Grimes and Sloane could become keepers. Grimes too much of an injury risk though.
Lake, Davis could be good cash cows and possible keepers.

Daulhouse, Masten, Hunt get rid of not much upside, and maybe put Smith in this catergory but ppl have a difference of opinon.

Christensen has had injury problems this preseason so a bit of a risk IMO. Patton is injured so get rid of him for D Smith.

So trade out Hunt, Grimes, Masten, Smith, Christensen, Daulhouse and Patton and get some rookies and top of the line premiums. Ie Broughton/Shaw in backline, Selwood/Murphy in midfield, Fyfe/Pavlich in forward line.

Rookies: Morris in backline.
MacDonald, Shiel, Coniglio in midfield
Big O in rucks (maybe??? I question myself)
Couch in forward line.

Good forward midpricer IMO is Porps doesn’t need to become keeper and should be a massive cash cow with crows having good early run.

Try get Martin into your forward line as well.

A lot more than 3 rookies isn’t there… Magner Bugg, Ellis, Coniglio, Miles, Tomlinson, D Smith Kennedy. POD seems to be mostly your backline and your selections will have to play to their fullest potential if you’re planning on upgrading any of them. Good luck with it but IMO it’s a bit of a hotch potch compromise guns/rookies/mid-pricers and I think you’ll find other teams going past you later in the season. Still I hope you do well as there are a lot of cookie cutter teams out there.

I see where you are going with this, and I’ve been tempted aswell. To break it down, you have 2 Prem Def, 3 Prem Mids, 1 Prem Ruc and 3 Prem Fwds, so 9 in total. Maybe a bit light on. Perhaps you can get another Elite Prem in somewhere. At least you might be a bit better balanced and still have the Points of Difference you are after.

i think the point im trying to make here is that do you think the rookies are better than those mid priced players who have performed well in the NAB cup. Who do you think will score more H.Shaw and Smedts or Malceski and Waters?? I just feel like the rookies have not shown much during the NAB.

No doubtthe mid pricers are better, but I think its more about will they generate the same value for money (and cash) to allow you to upgrade later. With the side you have got, I reckon i’d look at the following:

Coniglio to Clifton – 60,900 banked
Tomlinson to Smedts* – 43,400 banked
Waters to Darley* – 267,400 banked
Clarke to Morris* – 56,800 banked
* interchangeable with any rookie @ 113,200

Now you’d have 428,500 to upgrade Caddy to Murphy, Dal Santo etc.

I think the example you brought up is line ball, possibley in Waters/Malc favour, but I dont think you’d lose all that much in the swaps i suggested, but you gain an absolute elite mid who will bang out huge number all season, and will most likely be top 5 in their position. I don’t think you can say the same of Waters, Malceski, Lake, Golby, Clarke, Caddy, Coniglio. One of even 2 of them might have stellar seasons, but for all of them to I think is a bit of a stretch.

Then the next line of thinking is, if they arent all going to be top performers, is there better value out there that will allow you to upgrade later, but still earn points. There is no question, your team will score well early, but you want your side earning consistently through the season without burning too many trades along the way.

My point is that if you go for slightly more balanced setup initially, you will get the best of both worlds. I hold your concerns for an number of rookies aswell, but they only need to do a certain job for 5 or 6 weeks and they will have served their purpose and you can burn them. Its a very interesting strategy, but not without massive risk.

hey dansmen, glad you saw the lighter side of my comment which is how I intended it. Seriously, I salute you for putting your own stamp on your team not simply following the SCT crowd. Once things are locked in you’ll discover most of us are hiding or keeping some trick up the sleeve ;)

However, there is one main point of criticism with regards a Mid Pricer strategy which goes something like this… Basically, you’re goal is to get a team full of guns, as soon as possible (if you’re going for overall glory), but at least in time for the league finals (to compete against your mates).

While mid pricers will, on average, probably outscore rookies in the early season, their potential to earn you money is diminished. Therefore, making it more difficult to move them on (sell them for a decent profit). At the margin, this makes it more difficult to level up your overall team to highest scoring Premiums.

The fewer rookies you have, the fewer cash cows you have, the longer it takes you to replace your 2nd stringers with guns.

I think you’re wrong as there are a number of GWS boys who will rack up decent scores this year, including defenders like Bugg, Darley, Buntine, Mohr and Frost…. I’ve seen a number of these boys at close hand coming up through the juniors and there are some real ball magnets amongst them. Shiel, Miles, Devon-Smith, Sumner, Clifton, Coniglio and Greene will play a lot of games this year and will get plenty of the footy. Next year will be tough when we don’t have a whole new franchise team to pick from. This year is like shooting fish in a barrel by comparison which I guess makes you ahead of your time.

Very strong midfield personally I don’t like it because this is where your best rookies are going to be. The best scoring and best cash cows. It is a catch 22 as midfield premiums score better then all others. So thats why you need to balance them out and IMO its the hardest thing. Im going 3 premiums but have contemplated 2 being very risky and 4 very safe. Also the DPP link into midfield isn’t the biggest necessity IMO this year spech with the new trading rules therefore would get Pav into forward line I think alot of people will disagree with that but whatever.

Ryder? I don’t have the balls to get him but 1 year he’ll explode with so much potential but in certain games he doesn’t wanna be there. There is better midprice rucks ie Kreuz, HMac and maybe Maric.

Cloke good POD I was contemplating him as well. And Dell’olio needs to be elevated still I don’t see him in our best 22 either though.

Otherwise pretty solid team.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

Yeah, the intent is Pav to Fwds really.
I’m going with the 2 best in Pendles and GAJ, Thompson is so tempting with his early draw, and Watson is a top 5 mid for mine (hammies permitting).
I agree the best rookies are in the mids aswell, but in reality my side will be a 4-0-4 MID and a 5-0-3 FWD. (also, alot of the more promising mids (Neale, Shiel) are injured and are downgrade targets at best right now.

I reckon Cory Dell will be elevated, was very surprised he didnt play yesterday, and I reckon he is exactly what we need. May not play round 1, but I expect him to be in the side early.

Ryder. The way I see it is that he averaged 90 in a very up and down year. He looks so much stronger and fitter this year, and its my hunch that this is the year he arrives. I’m classing him as a borderline Prem who will cement himself as a genuine star/Prem this year. My option was Ryder and Pav, or Mumford and Dangerfield. In fact:

If you are going guns/rookies the easiest money is made in the midfield where they naturally score more points so their price goes higher quicker. My advice would be to shore up your backline because that is the hardest spot to generate cash and find upgrade targets. All the good teams will have 6 guns in the midfield pumping out 700+ points per round by about round 15 . The trick is to find points up forward and down back… my suggestion… make your backline stronger and more settled and let the midfield evolve over the course of the season.

Cooney is an interesting choice. He hasn’t done any good since his brownlow year but he’s got talent to burn so maybe this is the year. I’d like to see him do well. Just a suggestion for your rookies… Ledger is the man at St.Kilda and is a gun in the making. Saad is a small forward and will release Schneider into the midfield but it’s unlikely he’ll score big points as Riewoldt and Milne will be the target men again in a side that just doesn’t kick a lot of goals. There is absolutely nothing wrong with most of your selections but Zorko has had an injury interupted pre season, I don’t even remember Treloar playing and the word on the street is that Smedts is unlikely to see any action for a little while yet as his disposal is shonky so I’d suggest maybe look at MIles-GWS, Morris- Rich and Hall at GC as they look hot to trot for Round 1. I could be wrong but they are the ones the coaches seem to be pushing up.

As sung to Europe’s ‘the final countdown’

We’re researching seperately, yet together
But it’s farewell to the NAB cup
And we all come back
To our fave banter on SCT, cash cows, who can tell?
GAJ, I guess there is no one the same
We’re leaving deteriorated grounds,
back to Etihad Stadium
Carlton FC/insert a team that hasn’t won a game…
Will things ever be the same again?

It’s the final countdown
The final countdown

Ohh
We’re heading for round one and still we’re all standing tall
‘Cause maybe we’ll get our great teams seen & rated by us all, yea
With 6 days ’till lockout, seems like light years to go
Gems of players to be found
(To be found)
Disgraceful coverage of footy we won’t miss you, so…

It’s the final countdown
(The final countdown)
Ohh ho ohh

Riewoldt is really struggling. He’s been a star but his practice match form hasn’t shown that the spark is back and Watters is playing him further up the ground to try and avoid the constant third man up opposition sides use against him. To my knowledge he hasn’t kicked a single goal so far in 2012 but he’s a fantastic prospect as an upgrade target as if he does fire he’s a 100+ per week player so he’ll be worth shelling out for. Imo he’s too expensive for 70-80 points per week when there are break out prospects like Dangerfield and Christiansen floating around.

hi all,
playing around with it still and need to see who’s named before i lock in my rookies.
b:godds, lids, ???, malceski,lake,ellis,bugg (smedts,darley)

m:ablett,murphy,selwood,thompson,coniglio,stevens (couch,treloar)

r:cox,giles (redden,orren)

f:franklin,goodes,fyfe,martin,dangerfield,D.smith,saad (paine,pfieffer)

just some notes:
-ive got scott thompson because he plays gold coast, giants, port and bulldogs in the first 5 weeks of the year. he racks up against poor teams like this and is also very good historically against the dogs. ill be looking to upgrade him to a star midfielder (if thompson isnt one already) after round 5 for someone who has had a tough first 5 rounds like mitchell.
-paine is on my bench to be able to switch with smedts in defence.
-D.smith and pfieffer in my forward line are interchangeable with couch and treloar in my midfield for upgrading and bye purposes.

-i have a blank position in my backline. i have only 415k left in the kitty to fill that position. ideally would like scotland shaw which is an extra 150k or so. any ideas of how i can get the money to get one of them in that spot?? for example downgrading a forward who i can pick up later when price drops etc.
the reason is i can’t have malceski in my d3 position.

really need ideas, thanks
if you rate my side and comment with ideas ill do the same for your team.

If you seriously want money to upgrade to Shaw/Scotland you could take a punt on Lenny Hayes as M4 with the idea of hanging onto him as M6 down the track. Need more… swap Couch for Magner… if you still need more cash sell Treloar for Kerridge.

Forwards – Not sure about Lynch and Skinner, a little risky for me.

Been thinking about this one today:

got rid of lake and shifted my ruck /fwdsituation around..

Goddard, Scotland, Shaw, Broughton, Ellis, Smedts, Darley (Morris, Bugg)

Pendles, Ablett, Priddis, Fyfe, Wingard, Ledger (Miles, Magner)

Cox, Mumford (Giles, Redden)

Buddy, Martin, Hurley, Hale, Cripps, D. Smith, J. Cameron (Hall, Couch)
$6300 left

* considering downgrading Morris to yagmoor to enable Priddis to Boyd
* also Hurley to Jack Riewoldt I just thought he turned it on, on the weekend and would be a POD. Not sold on him yet though.
Money left then? $20, 300
Also thinking maybe Morris, Smedts or Bugg to Spurr/Yags

Get rid of one of your back or mid premiums for a cash cow, get a better second ruck. You can pick up the other premium down the track

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

jimbo March 18, 2012 at 9:12 pm

Good team premiums are all top notch and going to be in the top 7-10 in there respective positions. Very safe and I see alot of upside. Can’t really critize besides Duffield but thats just personal cause he burnt me so much last year. New coach new role means he could be good pick. Don’t listen to Bazza the 1 premo 3 rookie rucks is a solid option with both Redden and Giles being very good rookies compared to others out there. No one really uses there forth ruck, maybe during byes, but they would have changed by then anyway and everyone will prob get a donut anyway.

Who is the top rated midfield rookie this year?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

guru bob March 18, 2012 at 5:45 pm

This is only my opinion of course but having watched a number of these kids come up throught the system I have no doubt that Dylan Shiel will play 200+ games barring injury. He plays a bit like Daniel Kerr and has an enormous tank. He is quick over the ground, hard at the ball, reads the play well and is a great distributor of the ball. His kicking for goal is a bit shonky and he does need to work on the defensive side of his game. He lacks the silky skills of David Swallow but is a natural ball magnet and already has an AFL ready body. He has been injured throughout the NAB Cup but will slot straight into the GWS side when fit and will make an immediate impact this season. He has been a gun at every level since the Under 10′s but has gone under the radar as he was never in the national draft having been picked up as a GWS under 17 selection. Trade him in after a couple of games and watch the cash roll in.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

Jackson Ferguson will be a star but it would be close to a miracle if it happened in 2012. He was a NSW scholarship rookie and is still learning the game. He might sneak in a game or two if the Saints are a write off by mid-season but he is not really physically ready atm. He is a genuine talent and will be a great pick for next season. Cripps, Sipposs and Ledger are the most likely break outs at the Saints this year with Seb Ross and Winmar likely to play a few games later in the year. I’d take Bugg, Darley or use Tomlinson to switch with Smedts in the forward line.

Thumbs down- Sandi

Note that I already have mummy in the rucks as well.

Im a huge eagles supporter but i dont want to make my desicion bias. I know cox is the AFLs premium ruckman, but with nic nat coming in I think cox won’t have as big of an impact this year, on the other hand I have a feeling sandi is going to have a bid dominating year and get his form from previous years back.

Midfield is way too heavy. Get Deledio in backline, get Goodes and Dangerfield in forward line. Maybe keep Danger in there if you like to keep the link. IMO the link isn’t the that important.

Get Magner and Macdonald, possible Shiel if named or Wingard. Best rookies are in midfield. Get rid of Dempsy he is not a good SC player turns the ball over too much and doesn’t take marks from turn overs. I would rather either Lake or Hargrave take your pick.

And I think you need one premium ruckman ie Cox or Mumford.

mids-good midfield ive got watson too IMO risky but if his hammys hold up he will be a bargain pick up. shiel hasnt playe a nab cup game so i doubt if he will play rd 1 and i would downgrade ledger to a rookie to save some $
rucks-good ruck lineup i would keep krooz
fwds-good premos porps could be a good pickup and ya got some good rookiies.

Great feedback Daz…
When you say downgrade Ledger to save some $$$ , he is the rookie from St Kilda(worth 113k)…Saints have made him a lock for Rd 1 and he is a nuggety in and under with great pre season form( any sainters out there shed some light??/)…
I’ll take you point on Shiel…Perhaps J McDonald instead..
Hale is tempting now that Bailey is gone. and rough not ready to ruck yet…Hawks will win lots of games and score plenty of points…
Cheers Daz

Shiel wouldn’t be out for too much longer and he is going to be the best rookie IMO. So starting with him isn’t too much of a risk. The ultimate thing would be for Shiel to come in round 5-6 ready to milk say a Magner/Ledger round 8 but thats wishful thinking. If I here whispers this week that he is close ill start with him without seeing him.

Wouldn’t be concerned about the lack of MID/DEF. If I counted correctly, there are only 12 of them in total and most of them haven’t rated a mention on this site. This is compared to 42 MID/FWD options!! Does anyone else find that a bit strange?
In any case Pablo, I don’t think you’ll be alone there.

While I have spent most of the season committed to a pure GnR strategy, I’ve decided to mix it up in the defence. So here is my squad:

B: Goddard, Deledio, Malceski, Lake, Dempsey, Ellis, Bugg (Darley, Morris)

M: Pendlebury, Ablett, Murphy, Selwood, D Smith, Ledger (McDonald, Magner)

R: Cox, Mumford (Giles, Redden)

F: Franklin, Fyfe, Chapman, Martin, Cameron, Kennedy, Hampton (Hall, Dickson)

Cash: $35,200

Happy to take any feedback. If you don’t like my backline strategy, I’m happy to hear better ideas, but I can’t find another rookie that has good JS.

Cheers!

Too many midpricers. Ask yourself, what is your aim? If its to win the league then come the finals you want a full 22 premium team meaning that you get the top 7-10 players in each position. If you go midpricers your going to have to trade them out eventually therefore your wasting trades. Additionally they make you little money so there is really no bonus.

So is Heppel, Grimes, Lake and Dempsey going to end up being a top 10 defender? No

Is Nit Nat going to be top 5 ruck? (Possible)

Is Hurley going to be top 10? No and you can even throw in Zaha, Sidebottom and Danger, however I think one or two of these will be.

Currently I have 14 top of the line premiums which means I need 8 more to get to 22. In a best case scenerio I will use 16 trades to get to that 22. Most likely 20 trades leaving four for injuries.

With your team you have 8 top premiums with 2-3 that could become top premiums. Therefore best case scenerio you are using 20 trades to get to a full 22 premium team. Most likely using 24 trades easily and not having enough to cover injuries so you’ll be stuck with say Dempsey who will score an average of say 80 whereas I’ll have Broughton averaging 95. Your bleeding points through your team with this stratergy.

I would get rid of Hurley, Nit Nat, Dempsey, Grimes and Heppel. And one of Sidebum, Danger and Zaha. Trade one down and upgrade two to those elite premiums.

i know this is meant to be teams, but what are peoples thoughts on this.

SAM REID (sydney fwd)

im a teeny bit biased, having grown up with reidy. but i think this is worth a reid.. :P

so, i looked at reidy’s pre season, he has been taking a lot better marks this year, over the jitters from last season, and he seems to be a lot higher on the midfielders list of blokes to kick to, he has become a target.

now to sydneys start of season, they play, in order, gws, freo, port, n melb, hawks, adelaide, rich, melb…

by the time these matches are completed, i honestly reckon his price tag of $339,700 and average of 62 will be a lot higher, perfect time to downgrade a rookie thats peaked, and grab yourself a fyfe or chapman or someone else u havent got from the start.

Hi All!
I’ve never done supercoach before so I’ve been trawling through everything I can so I can learn. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Be critical as possible, otherwise I won’t learn :)

Defenders:
B Goddard, B Deledio, H Shaw, B Lake, S Fisher, H O’Brien, N Malceski, (M Clarke, T Bugg)

Midfielders:
G Ablett, D Swan, M Murphy, A Goodes, S Sidebottom, C Wingard, (A Kennedy, S Kerridge)

Ruck:
S Mumford, J Giles, (J Redden, O Stephenson)

Forwards:
L Franklin, N Fyfe, A Tomlinson, D Smith, B Smedts, J Cameron, C Hampton, (A Hall, T Couch)

I look forward to your feedback!

Too many rookies in your forward line. Trade out Malceski & O’brien from defense for two rookies then use that cash to upgrade your forwards. Maybe get rid of sidebum from the mids to free up a bit more cash cuz theres plenty of quality rookie midfielders (some with Dual position also) who can score highly. Good Luck.

Greeny, too heavy in MID, too light in RUC.

Omen’s 3 Simple Steps Completion:
1. Drop one of Watson/Boyd and make a careful choice for a cash cow MID rook instead.
2. Rethink Lake + Hargrave – toss a coin and pick one. Get someone like Morris or Darley to replace.
3. With all of your spare cash, upgrade your R1. Kreuzer is a happy chappy at R2 but not enough to support a 1:0:3 ruck strategy on his own.

Not a bad side. I would look at replacing Bower > say Darley / Clarkeor another starting Rookie. James McDonald has got me worried with his game time and role, however, he will probably score 70+ because he is a great tackler. If Dylan Shiel is named for round 1 he should have preference over JMac. I have no confidence in Darren Pfeiffer. I think McCarthy, Wingard and Rodan are first in line for the final midfield rotation at Port.

Here is a team that I have thrown together for my daughter to have some fun with for the year. It has a set and forget forward line, banking on Palmer, Ebert, Yarran and Kreuzer to explode. Rookies plenty of money of course.
Its amazing how much cash is available with no premium ruck choices.

Goddard – Deledio – Shaw – Yarran – Dempsey – Ellis – Darley
(Bugg and Morris)
Murphy – Selwood – Palmer – Ebert – Smith – Magner
(Shiel and Neale)
Kruezer – Giles (Redden – Stephenson)
Franklin – Fyfe – Chapman – Martin – Cloke – Sidebottom – Dangerfield
(Smith and Kennedy)
$12900 in the bank.

My intended starting midfield since day dot has been Ablett, Murphy, Selwood, Swallow, plus rookies.

Reading all these comments about Swan and Pendles has got me thinking about merit behind leaving them out.

* Ablett is obvious
* Murphy’s a gun about to become a perma captain option
* Selwood is waaaaay under priced and too good a value to ignore
* Swallow is on the up and up. This one probably comes back to my love for NM but IMO he’ll be top 10 in SC this season and therefore at his current starting price, a steal.

Thumbs Up: Pick up Pendles and Swan later on
Thumbs Down: Change the team and get Pendles or Swan into the mids

Pretty much my thinking there RB. I’ve run with Ablett, Murphy, Boyd and Watson. I chose Boyd as opposed to Selwood because of the Nab Cup form and I reckon that boyd has had a little more time to adjust to the captaincy. Watson cos of my Red and Black blood and I also think that he is unders this year as he was leading the comp after 7 rounds or so till he did his hammy and I’m hoping that they are now good to go.

I would be doing plenty of homework on the rookies as I cannot see Yagmoor, Baguley, Pfeiffer, Saad, Weedon, Zorko and possibly Couch and Smedts as starters for round 1. I cannot see Kerr averaging a solid 100 over a full year and playing 22 games. Also I dont think he will appreciate in value greater than a rookie. Possibly upgrade Kerr and Hayes to premium and rookie (Cogniglio/Shiel.) Just make sure the one selected is named for round one. Both are capable of holding down M5/M6 until reaching their cash level and have great job security. You will also free up around $100,000 in cash.

Good luck.

Also considered not having McIntosh and going for a rookie ruck on field giving me cash to get Lake and Porps instead of 2 rookies but decide with a more Guns and Rookies approach.

- Put Goddard in Mids so can have a Fwd/Def DPP available? Right move, or should I just leave him in Defence and not be concerned with a DPP
- Hall and Couch as Fwd reserves? Will the get enough game time?

IMO I would suggest changing Stephenson to Giles as your 3rd ruck option…..Giles will make you much much more money over the season & Boumann to Morris from the Tigers (better job security in Morris). I know that makes 3 tigers in your defence but when the bye’s come around, I’m sure you’ve made plenty of $$$$$ from them by then & you’ll be able to upgrade on 1 or both rookies!

Great balance across all lines Leesa, well done…12 premiums, 3 mid prices & 15 rookies! Solid potential!

If Nic Nat takes the step you think he will & becomes a prem, then you only need to u/g 1 ruck and are well placed on other lines. I was employing this tactic with Kruiz @ one point before abandoning it.
I see the choice to have the extra prem on the Def line as opposed to the Fwds as a stylistic one.
With your rookies, I am not convinced that Mac is going to be as good as D.Smith/Shiel & Miles. I’ve got Kennedy, don’t know Dickson, but, feel the rest are fine.
You only need to make trades for 8, maybe 9 if you u/g Nic Nat for finals to have an all prem side. It’s a strong side.

If you want that R/F DPP and cheap get Rowe least he’ll play a couple games. Get rid of NRoo and one or two of Malceski, Lake and HArgrave. Don’t like midprice stratergy your going to run out of trades before you get a full 22 premium team.

If you can get the money go NRoo to Fyfe. Otherwise someone who is playing more midfield and a bit of a POD like Robinson or Zaha or even Sidebum.

Personally I would get rid of Malceski as he costs more and I see all three ending up at the same price anyway so more upside in Lake and Hargrave. You could downgrade to a Morris or Darley.

Juddy but not THE Juddy March 20, 2012 at 8:46 am

I have finally made up my mind and settled on my premium and mid-priced setup and I am running 1/3 ruck setup but would like to put it out there for approval/criticism for my rookie choices.

D6- Bugg D7- Morris EM- Smedts, Darley
M5- Coniglio M6- Magner EM- Ledger, Shiel
F6- D.Smith F7- Kennedy EM- Cameron, Hall.

Magner will maybe miss R1 and the same with Shiel but I am willing to cop that and not have to waste an early trade to get them in as I think they will be in the top ranked rookies. Ledger only came on when it was lights out for Lenny but did very well and Watters has been qouted as saying that the Saints will mix youth in but will they vest him? Hall reportedly has a hammy issue but he is cheap and unless someone of his price or less (T.Couch?) gets picked for R1 and he doesn’t then he will stay for the minute. Not so sure on Smedts js but with the injuries at Catland may get a run early then phased out when the rest come back unless he tears it up. Morris is MAR and played well last week but will he go into a backline that supposedly has their rookie in Ellis?

I have the same three mids and the rest rookies. To me the mids are quite overpriced and you have more hope of them coming down in value than the other positions

flip side of that is that they score the most so we could find ourselves behind over the first few weeks

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

remps March 20, 2012 at 3:59 pm

yeah i keep looking and thinking the same thing with the mids.. but i think there are that many rookies to choose from in there, its silly to load up with premiums that score well, when i can do that in my fwds and backs. then i can upgrade my rucks to set and forget, and change the rookies up to better premiums and work out my byes strategy. :)

so.. apart from my mids maybe lacking a tad (made up for in other lines)… any thoughts or problems??

its a tough one isnt it. Had scotland in this year as a lock but have now changed my mind and have him out. Think you are right though Big Fella definitely feel rookies off the backline have more scoring potential than the FWDs. depends though i guess if small forward or running fwd flanker.

PS – my team is currently doing my head in! just shuffled everything to bring in Mummy and feel like i have ruined everything! :(

Omen has been ringing the changes down at Evil Rd.

Amazingly, this outfit spends every last cent. That’s right, exactly $O salary cap remaining. Is it a good omen? You decide…

Goddard, Deledio, Shaw, Broughton, Ellis, Smedts, Darley, \
Bugg, Morris

Ablett, Swan, Murphy, Selwood, Coniglio, Smith D,
Shiel, Magner

Cox, Mumford,
Giles, Redden

Franklin, Fyfe, Martin, Porplyzia, Tomlinson, Pfeiffer, Saad,
Kennedy, Hall

Main changes:
OUT: Scotland, Priddis, Kreuzer (capsized), Goodes
IN: Shaw, Swan, Cox, Porplyzia, Coniglio

Obvious focus will be upgrading the FWD line in the short term but something has to give if you want Cox and Mumford at R1/R2 and 5 other 600K+ Premiums at the get go!

This is my first time playing SC.

Normally DT.

After mucking around for an hour i have as follows with 400k in the bank.

I am thnking of upgrading a mid to the 400k mark and using the other 100k to upgrade a FWD.

Anyhoo some feedback would be nice in case there are some startling errors.

DEF: Goddard, Broughton, Lake, Hargrave, Golby, Bugg, Darley, Ellis, Morris

MID: Pendles, Swan, Murphy, Sloane, Miles, Magner, Coniglio, Pfeiffer

RUC: Cox, Kreuzer, Giles, Redden

FWD: Franklin, Goodes, Sidebottom, Dangerfield, Walker, Saad, Kerridge, Smedts, Hall

I know ppl like Walker, Sloane, Kreuzer and Lake might raise some eyebrows… but i am keen on punting on them.

Your back looks a bit weak, 6 rookies is a bit much. Push Deledio into the back, take a rookie back out and put a mid rookie in (or just switch a dpp). The Midfield is where rookies will score the highest naturally and there is plenty of talent in there. I would suggest looking at C. Smith (guessing you got D. Smith), Ledger or Clifton. Watch out for Enright as well, there’s been injury worries about him. Geelong were confident he’d play r1, but still keep an eye out.

Mid: G. Ablett (C), Boyd, Sloane, Masten, Parker, Clifton (Shiel, Ledger)

Ruck: Mummy (VC), Redden (Giles, Stepheson)

Forward: Goodes, Fyfe, Martin, Gray, Dangerfield, Porplyzia, D.Smith (Pfeiffer, A. Hall)

It should slide a bit once the play lists come up. Please give me some critism, etc

Not a bad looking team mate, but i think you’ve got a few too many mid pricers. Maybe downgrade Gray to a rookie, and seeing as you’ve got the 1-3 ruck set up you should have enough to the upgrade mastern and/or sloane to premiums.

Backline: Looking good. M.Clarke a risk, maybe think about smedts or darley.
Mids: As mentioned above, sloane and mastern > premiums, 2 premium midfielders isn’t enough.
Rucks: Popular set up now with Mumfords weekend performance. Solid.
Fwds: Not bad at all. Gray to a rook is the only thing i’d suggest IMO.

Hey SCT coaches, Not sure where to post this, so i’ll just chuck it in here.

I know we have already had a poll for this, but that turned out 50/50 and was before NAB Cup. Many many changes have occured during then and now. Winner of this is locked in for my premium ruck in a 1:3 set-up.

Just some quick info for you before you vote -

Dean Cox : ($662,600) (AV. 122)

Great year once again for the Big Cox, Averaging an amazing 18 disposals and 29 hitouts a game. Not only does he take the stoppages as a ruckmen but follows them up by racking up possesions around the ground like an extra midfielder. He has been dominating the ruck for years now, but at 30 years of age is his run of dominance coming to an end? With competition for rucking time from Nic Nat his hit outs will surely decrease, but this may be made up for by a surge in goals whilst resting up forward.

Shane Mumford ($610,300) (AV 112)

Like himself, it was a massive year for Mummy. Averaging 13 disposals, 39 hitouts and 5 tackles a game, he had oppositions teams shaking in there boots from the word go. His giant figure allows him to flick the oppositions ruck to the side allowing him to rack up ridiculous numbers in the hitouts column. Even though he doesn’t cover the ground as well as Cox he still manages to find the football around the packs. His aggresions for the game shows in his tackle count, often topping the chart at the end of the game. With no competition for the number 1 ruck spot Mummy looks the goods this year.

Your call coaches, this will be interesting…

Dean Cox – Thumbs Up

Shane Mumford – Thumbs Down

Cheers :)

The Big Fella March 20, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Just casting an eye over these sides posted, and noticed that all the ones with helpful comments on them point to “Think you need one or two more Prem’s in FWD” or “Backline is looking a bit thin, maybe try this”
Keeping in mind that all sides are going to be thin in at least one line depending on tactic, and considering ALOT of players named in all these sides are becoming common – Was wondering if anyone had a crack at a POD side. With a definate POD in strategy? – 14yo Nephew (Loves Footy/Stats/SC) gave me his side to look at, and I don’t mind it

DEF: Deledio, Shaw, Broughton, Morris, Boumann, Bugg (Darley, Yagmoor)
MID: Ablett, Murphy, Boyd, Watson, Mitchell, Kennedy (Ledger, Magner)
RUC: Kreuzer, Giles (Redden, Rowe)
FWD: Franklin, B.Harvey, Martin, Cloke, Hale, Porplyzia, D.Smith (Hall, Couch)

Not being fussed with Overall, just his Junior Footy Club Comp. Thoughts?
I don’t mind the approach actually. Told him to burn Porp for a rookie and pump Kreuzer up to a Prem. He laughed…. Kids.

Your team looks great as it stands, but of you are concern about your 3 premium 3 rookie strategy then I recommend that you downgrade Enright and Dangerfield into rookies which should allow you to get another premium in the mids.

OK. Other than a question I have to pose at the end of this, I think this is IT.

Backs: Goddard, Shaw, Broughton, Lake, Ellis, Spurr, Darley // Bugg, Morris

Mids: Pendlebury, Ablett, *Nick Dal Santo* CAPT (scored 174 last year against Port at AAMI), Martin, Coniglio, Ledger // Shiel, Magner

Rucks: Cox, Hale // Giles, Redden

Fwds: Franklin, Goodes, Fyfe, Cloke, Porplezia, Cripps, D. Smith // Kennedy, Hall

$55, 900 in the kitty – by my reasoning a projected average score of around 2000-2050

My thoughts: Backs too weak. I could trade Goodes for Pavlich. Enabling Spurr to Marty Clarke. I just keep remembering everyone saying Goodes warms up later in the year. I think I started with him last year but might look to him as an upgrade target.
Not sure on VC as yet. Will look closer to lockout. I’d probably put Mumford if I had him. Maybe Goddard.
====================================================

Thumbs up: Do the trade as mentioned, would mean $16, 100 left to spend.
Thumbs down: looks ok, leave it alone. No more fiddling.

Just occured to me that in those few hrs when Sydney is knocking up a cricket score against the GWS witches hats, SC is in lockout mode. That means that if you are mega keen you can actually jump in and look at people’s teams. Most people are at a stage where they are set in their structure and know which elites they’ve committed to and it’s just a few rookies that they are waiting to confirm. Could be handy to know if your main rival in a cash league is taking a chance on a risk/reward mid-pricers strategy, is rolling the dice like i am with the 1 and 3 ruck theory, which premiums they’ve gone ….. this info could be of particular value to you.

Thumbs up: i’ll be sticky beaking at my rival’s teams

I dont think you will be able to see there team as quote from the SC website “You’ll play ‘head-to-head’ between rounds 3-19 and receive 4 points for a win in your league. The Finals Series follow for the Top 8 and 9th-16th during rounds 20-23 (the bottom two miss out on finals).” So you’re not playing them round 1 and I would believe they wouldn’t show up anyway until full lock out.
