Rate My Team – Before Final Lockout

by Duck on March 12, 2011

Well it’s only a matter of days away now and we’ll all be locked out and under competition trade rules so it’s now or never to make those final tweaks to your team.

Let us have it in the comments below, either full teams for review or player v player and even player v player v player questions if you’re tossing up several blokes for those final vital spots.

Don’t just ask, ask, ask for advice either, chip in and let the other guys know what you think of their dilemmas too …. that way we all benefit.

Not sure what your plans are (Overall or League) but watch out in R6, you’ll be without Broughton, Duffield, Puopolo, Selwood, Savage, Sandilands, Franklin, Rioli, Mzungu and I. Smith.

So PA, just to be clear. I’m going for the league win,
“watch out in R6, you’ll be without Broughton, Duffield, Puopolo, Selwood, Savage, Sandilands, Franklin, Rioli, Mzungu and I. Smith.”
So this would be a good thing? For the league win that is?

And for the overall, would I try and make a good balance from players fomr every team?
Cheers.

yeah, it’s fine b/c your R6 score wont count in your leagues and more of the players you have will be playing during your league matches.

nice team willo …only a couple of things i would like to sugest , i realy think there are better options in the midfield thomas for pav , gives you a priemum mid / forward option , and gaff for either irons ,hibberd ,schneider ,or prestia if they are a starter for round one .. and will puopolo play round one ? i am realy not sure if he would get a regular spot in the hawks back line , if he dosent get a spot for round one ,i would swap him out for maybe for .eg. brodie smith ,stanley or coad (the smokey could be ,nic lower plays round one and comes off the rookie list ) and for the forward line i would like to suggest darling out for maybe , viv michie ,schneider ,markovic and if you have the $$$ i would pick up ryan gamble …

I’m going for the leagye win:
Backs: Goddard, Deledio, Duffield, Grimes, Adcock, Otten, Heppell
(Duigan, D.Stanley, Puopolo)
Mids: Judd, Montagna, Pendles, J. Kennedy (Sydney), Higgins, D.Swallow

Rucks: Cox, Jamar
(Derickx, Z. Smith)
Forwards: Riewoldt, Buddy, Pav, Dangerfield, Yarran, Veszpremi, A.Krakouer
(C.Richardson, McKernan, Matera)
Looking for a better 2nd ruck option.
Suggestions?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

Scotty March 12, 2011 at 12:21 pm

maybe Jolly? He is less expensive than Jamar and he ended the season last year on fire. Started the preseason quite slowly though, maybe Collingwood are just wrapping him up in cotton till the first game. Another potential option if your looking to save up some cash in Robbie Warnock. I expect him to take the mantle as the No.1 ruckman at Carlton so will get alot more game time

On Robbie Warnock, another good unique could be Ben McEvoy. With Michael Gardiner and Kosi out, he will most likely play 1st ruck.

Depends on who you have already, but if you dont have Goddard there you cant go past Montagna. Swallow and Watson will go missing in SC finals due to the Byes, Boyd is good value, but has 2 byes that will affect League games and Pendles will too but you may already have Swan?

I’d be getting A. Krakouer into your team Con. He is the must have as far as value for money goes IMO, He’s had A. Krakouer of a preseason and looks like A. Krakouer of a pick up for the pies, and had A. Krakouer of a game last night! Maybe trade Corey for him and with the change get Sandilands for Ryder in the ruck.

flirting with an idea? i was thinking if i put david hale in my team and will play the first 3 games. now lets say he increases his price to about 300K, after round 3 you can trade in petrie who will still be on 216K and turning hale from a 250K cost into about an 85K profit as well as have petrie scoring at minimum the same but hopefully much more?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

Brad March 12, 2011 at 9:23 pm

What’s a trade worth? If you have Petrie from the start, yes he has a couple of zeros, but you should have bench cover at the start of the season, this amount will equal only the amount made on Hale.

Most here would say they are worth much more than $85K.

Pretty good team, but there are a few players that don’t convince me, including N Krakeour, Priddis and Higgins. This is all very subjective stuff, so feel free to disregard!

Krakeour: Yeah, he’s probably guaranteed a game, but I’m not really sure where his improvement will come from – as such I doubt he’ll go up too much in price and I’d prefer an extra premium in the back line anyway.

Priddis: I’ve heard he’s in line to be a mediator between the Israelis and the Palestinians, as he’s incapable of doing any damage. Sure, his past scoring is very good, but I’m not sure he’s really a top-notch premium, and for his price you’d expect one. Look at Boyd and A Swallow for potential replacements.

Higgins: He’s got the DPP, which is good, but I’ve had him for a few seasons now and he never seems to live up to his potential. Suppose this could be the season, but I’d downgrade him to I Smith and use the money to upgrade Krakeour to Gibbs, say. With Smith you keep the DPP as well.

I’ve also heard question marks over Atley’s ability to make the step up, so there could be better options – wait until the teams come out before making a final decision. And as long as you understand that Drummond is a risk, that’s fine, just don’t expect 22 games from him!

Dangerfield and Kennedy are two I would pick if I wasn’t trying to avoid mid-priced players, both could be very good choices.

As mentioned, good team and with a couple of tweaks could be even better. And as I also said, this is my personal view – seek a second and third opinion if you’re still not sure!

JS will be a concern once R/D options are replenished/gain fitness, but, I suspect he might be an option to leapfrog Cam Wood in the pecking order.

If you don’t have Swan, Pendlebury would easily be top of that list. But given that most teams only have three or four midfield premiums, if you had Swan and Pendlebury as two of those you’d be putting a high proportion of your eggs in the Collingwood basket, as it were.

Also, the term ‘Pendles’ makes me want to hit someone.

I checked. GWS 968. Syd 1998. Clearly lopsided, and thus inflating his average. He’s not going to get 274 every 3 weeks, is he?

But again, I still think he is a good pick, but my point was to show his average without perspective is misleading.

Really like this team, although:

See my comments on Higgins a bit earlier on. I think you could potentially get a rookie for him and use the cash elsewhere, such as an upgrade from McCauley to Z Smith.

Sylvia could explode this year, but I think that he’s more of a DT player than a SC player – had him last year, and there were some games where I thought he should have scored 120+ only to look at the scores and find he’s just cracked 80. Could well be worth it at the price, though, and certainly consistent enough if he’s over his injuries.

I’ve heard that Hurn’s horribly out of touch – you could potentially pick another premium for him (not sure who) and see how he goes, potentially getting him cheaper in the middle of the season.

And you might struggle in prelim final week with both Gibbs and Judd missing.

Generally very hard to criticise, though, top team.

Nicko March 12, 2011 at 8:29 pm

Cheers Sam.

Sylvia and Hurn are my the last 2 I put in to be honest. I think with increased time in the midfield this year (staying injury free) will allow Sylvia to get those big scores we dream of. Yeah, his clanger count hurt him last year (keeping sum scores below 100) but all in all he was good value for his restricted 15 game output last year. He wins his own ball and kicks more than he handballs which usually helps too.

Im not sold on Hurn either, I hav thought about a swap but dont hav much to choose from, with all my preffered options in my team already. I find the ‘mid-priced’ defenders range to be atrocious this year, if u dont have atleast 4 premiums in there this year u are fucked in my opinion. (Hence why I am taking Gibbs despite the Round 23 Carlton Bye)

I have enough money to upgrade a ruck option on the bench, but wana wait till the final teams are released bfor I am locking in all my bench guys.

I am confident that by Round 23 I will hav conjured up a plan to cover for the loss of 2 premiums, if I still have them both by then that is.

Thanks again for ur constructive criticism tho, keeps the mind ticking over and serves as a good reminder there is other good SC coaches out there with their own clever strategies.

B- Good backs, Johnson COULD be good as a unique. Also i dont see Batchelor being in Richmonds best 22, so watch him closely.

C- Good mids, though while Corey is cheap there are other players around that price that are greater value especially since he has a bye in the finals.

R- Fraser as a unique, if he plays a more prominent forward role i see his scores lowering, also i think Z.Smith is a must.

F- Pretty good forwards, i see Dids as a better upgrade target then a starter due to his off season surgery. Also as a personal preference for me i will not be starting a season with Higgins until he gets through a season with no (soft) injuries, but that may just be me.

Who’s the Johnson in the backline? If it’s Michael

Changes I’d make: Corey out (think he’s a gun but a bit past it, or at the very least, won’t improve), D Swallow in.
Fraser out, Cox in.
M. Johnson out, too inconsistent and might be used as the sub this year, limiting his scoring potential. Not sure who to put in his place, depends how much money you have left.
If you’ve got some spare cash, I’d get Rioli in place of Higgins, too.

You could also struggle with Gibbs and Judd coming prelim final week. Otherwise, very solid, some nice picks there.

Wouldn’t mind some advice on my own team…

Goddard, Gibbs, Deledio, Enright, Grimes, Otten, Heppell
(Toy, Puopolo, Duigan)

Swan, J. Selwood, Montagna, Krakouer, Swallow, Harris
(Hibberd, Wallis, I Smith)

Sandilands, Cox
(Z Smith, Derickx)

N. Riewoldt, Franklin, Pavlich, Goodes, S. Johnson, Prestia, Mzungu
(Richardson, Tapscott, Darling)

Alternatives for Mzungu, Tapscott and Darling particularly welcomed.
Thanks!

B- Great backs, Enright looked really under the pump against the saints and fumbled a lot dont know whether to be worried about that.

C- Great Mids, just as long as Wallis gets games.

R- Great rucks same as mine.

F- Good forwards, though Mzungu is most likely going to be out Rnd 1 and in round 6 you will have 4 forwards out.

Heres hopefully my final team- My forwards are the part that i cant seem to get right, it seems that most of them are effected by the byes at the same time(well the premiums) or they are injured or coming back from one.

Anyway would appreciate some input.

B- Gibbs, Deledio, Broughton, H.Shaw, Grimes, Otten, Heppell (Toy, Duigan, Buckley)

C- Goddard, Selwood, Pendlebury, J.P.Kennedy, D.Swallow, Harris (Irons, I.Smith, Hibberd)

R- Sandilands, Cox (Smith, Derickx)

F- N.Riewoldt, Franklin, Harvey, Sylvia, Walker/Yarran, Krakouer, Petrie (Richardson, Darling, Matera)

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

Sam March 12, 2011 at 8:17 pm

Harvey’s a bit of a unique pick (read risk), but I’m sure you’re aware of that, and see my thoughts on Sylvia a little further up (I don’t think he’s a bad pick, just make sure you know that it could be a frustrating ride).

Kennedy could be a very good pick up. Whenever I pick mid-priced players I always pick the wrong ones, so I resolved to pick as few as possible this time, but Kennedy was tempting. I’d definitely go for Yarran over Walker, too.

Thanks for your advice above, agree with you that the forwards are very difficult to get right.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Rustee March 12, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Yep Harvey has just been in sensational form in the preseason, but his age is a concern. I have had my eye on Kennedy since he became an inside midfielder last year. Yeah the forwards seem very hard to pick this year. Cheers

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Richard Crabs. March 12, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Not bad Rustee.
Backs: Very Good. Personally I’d steer clear of Shaw but thats just my opinion.
Mids: Good. Not sure about your backups for when Swallow and Harris miss out in round 1. Might cop a donut there but in the long term pretty good.
Fwds: Not great. I get what your saying about the byes and the trouble finding premiums up front, but IMO Harvey’s well past it. Could prove me wrong but I wouldn’t go there. Not convinced on Sylvia either. Too inconsistent for mine. Walker/Yarran? Could work. A unique thats for sure. I’d go for Yarran.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Rustee March 12, 2011 at 8:37 pm

Yeah the forwards are definately frustrating me.

Not set on my mid rookies as Smith and Irons may not get games.

Yeah i like Yarran as a unique picked up another 22 possies today as well. Harvey just found himself in my forward line today as he has been dominating Preseason i may upgrade Sylvia to Johnson.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Adz March 12, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Gday Rustee whats the reason behind not having Higgins or Dangerfield? Both seem to be popular picks this year..

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Rustee March 12, 2011 at 9:32 pm

My personal preference is not to have Higgins at the start of a season until he goes through a season with no (soft) injuries. So basically hes injury prone. Others have him due to him being cheap and MPP. Dangerfield for me while others think he will breakout this year, i dont see him as doing it usually breakout player show that they will in the closing games of previous years or the nab cup eg. Josh Kennedy, but the real reason is

Take a risk on a guy at 360k and he will make me 140k if he becomes a good premium, or take the risk and watch him score 65-75 ppg, so for me i am going to wait until he actually looks like breaking out and scores a couple of back to back hundreds.

Guys some constructive critisism would be appreciated:

Goddard, Delidio, Broughton, Grimes, E. Wood, Otten, Heppel
Reserves: Coad, Toy, Duigan

Selwood, Pendlebury, Boyd, Swallow, Harris, Krakouer
Reserves: Irons, Smith, Hibberd

Sandi, Cox
Reserves: Smith, Tippet ( gc dpp)

Franklin, Riewoldt, Rioli, Goodes, Higgens, Jetta, Petrie
Reserves: Prestia, Richardson, Darling

50 k left

My plan is to trade Jetta out to Ablett after his second buy. I have him because he could swap into the mids with Krakouer and Smith being dpp.
I also have petrie so he can swap with Tippet so he can back up my ruckman when they have buys.

Cheers guys

Like it. I think Jetta getting six consecutive 200s from rounds 5-10 will give you second thoughts about trading him out, but apart from that, it’s a good plan.

The other one I’m not sure about is Wood, but that’s probably because I don’t know enough about him.

To be blunt – only about 9 100+ players. You need to have 11+ IMO. I’ve seen some with 13-14.

Change your middle of the road players for premiums.

Also, your DPP looks shaky. Who will Goddard and Gibbs swap with?

It’s not like theres no other options around their price range too.
Montanga – Selwood, Judd, Pendles or Boyd.
Goddard – Whoever the fudge you want!
Riewoldt – Franklin, Pav, Rioli, Goodes etc.

I have been thinking about this for a while and my first thought agrees with Motts but am now starting to lean towards having all three. Here is why:
1. I do run a risk on rd 14 but hopefully by then I will have other guns in to cover and keep my scores consistent (ie. Pend &/or GAJ, etc).
2. Secondly I do not feel there are plenty of other choices, let me go thought them:
- GAJ (groin)
- Judd (finals bye)
- Sellwood (finals bye)
- Chappy (groin)
- Hodge (foot)
- Cross (in my team)
- Barlow (leg)
- Murphy (finals bye)
- Dal (a saint too)
- Pendle (I have Swan so covering two mids for two byes is too risky for me. Also have Krak)
- Priddis (Not confident of a gun in a struggling team)
- Watson (finals bye)
- Boyd (I already have Cross and targeting Lake as an upgrade target, so if I get Boyd too I will be in the same boat with 3 doggie guns)
- Swallow (finals bye)

So there needs to be a conprimise somewhere and perhaps R14 is where it is.

Had a little review *ahem* of my team seeing as there are a few injuries niggling around… have a question for you all, is it bad to have no players from an afl team in your team? (as in, I now have no players from Brisbane OR Port Adelaide, and only one from Ess, Melb, Syd and WB)

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

Not bad at all. I have no Brisbane players either and if Irons is out, as Barry Kraft has suggested overnight, then no Port players as well.

It appears Irons isn’t too bad, a jarred knee that will be monitored over the next couple of days. Watching Primus’ post match report he didn’t seem to concerned. Sat out the second half of yesterday’s match against Giants, however midfielder Matt Thomas sustained a footy injury which is of some concern.

Typo error on Matt Thomas footy injury, should have been foot, however the injury he sustained is called plantar fascitis.

I just worry with Nick… you gotta worry players won’t be as BOLD as before a serious injury scare.. I know he will still kick heaps but will he be as brilliant as before? aaaaagh who am I to question this? he is like a god to me…. internal termoil…. lol I just can’t kick him out I love him too much…gotta love bias.
Then there’s Jack who was amazing last year. One can only think he will get better, too. But yeah, if they were looking to play him up the ground I guess he’s got to go.
Maybe I should just rethink Buddy? He’s so hot and cold….
THIS IS TOO HARD and it hasn’t even bloody started yet :P

definetly keep Nick and take out Jack for Pav, Jack was part of a Tigers forward line against the crows that didn’t score in the last quarter, and he only kicked 2 goals for the game. But then again Nick was held by Heath Grundy and only kicked the 1. But this is only pre season and both players will improve. But look at both there stats from last year. Jack Riewoldt, 78 goals playing every game. Nick Riewoldt 39 goals, played 11 games, half the season, double his 39 goals to 78 goals and there is no difference for goal scoring. But even with N.Riewoldt’s hammy, he still kept his price high at 529,000. Also Nick gets 18+ touches a game, Jack gets around 14 touches a game. I think Nick is the way to go

I’ve got $154,800 left & looking for a bit of tweeking for a ‘league win’ only as playing for cash. Therefore tried to maximise head to head bye players (bris, syd, freo & melb) & trade Dons etc for GC players after round 9. Hopefully DPP’s will get me through rounds 1 & 2 with GC & Crows Bye then having Swallow, Harris, Prestia start & use DPP’s to improve defence & forwards in non GC bye rounds. Any assistance / comments would be greatly appreciated.

DEF: Delidio, Grimes, Adcock, Hurley, A. Otton, Duigan, Lower.

RUCKS: Sandi & Cox. + Z Smith, Derickx

FOR: N. Riewoldt, Rioli, J.Brown, Dangerfield, Yarran, Knights, A.Krakouer

*Geelong Utility Billie Smedts as DPP with Hurley would give better balance but limited news on his niggling injuries – anybody got any news. I. Smith rise from no-where worries me, any other \
*Anyone any thoughts on player switches, i’ve been looking at J.Selwood, T.Varcoe, D.Thomas, Libba, Josh Green, Darling, Polec & Gaff. Thanks, Andy

With Callinan out for the first part of the season (around 10 from memory) you could put A. Krakouer in his spot (now you will have 3 FOR/MID and 2 MID/FOR) and then add a good rookie forward.
Remember that Callinan is still rookie listed and has to a) get fit then b) get up-grated onto list after a few games in the SANFL

Grimes for me. Not sure on Broughton due to Freo’s injuries + loss of Tarrant – others would know more on whether his points / role will be affected.

Bleaver, you have picked lots of Dual Position Players (DPP’s) as backs and forwards but only Heppel to link up with them in Midfield. One of God, Gibbs or Delidio needs to be put into midfield. So that you will have 2 x DPP’s in both backs & mids. A couple of your 4 DPP’s from Forwards should go into Mids – maybe Pav & Harvey (maybe swop Harvey with Goodes?)

Players i don’t like in your team:
Drummond – too injury prone
Murphy – good footballer but doesn’t score highly enough in SC .. pick a kid instead
Dal Santo – there’s better midfield options around the same price
Watson – Essendon has a bye in Rnd 24 (SC GF) so swap him purely on that basis
Palmer – very unique pick but generally, players are unique ’cause people don’t rate them
Ruck set-up – Petrie misses Rnd 1 (suspension) & 3 (bye), Tippett isn’t assured of a game and has a bye Rnd 1 anyway, Charman’s injury is listed as indefinite. Therefore you’re definitely copping a week 1 doughnut in the R2 (ruck 2) position and quite possibly in Rnd 3 as well … i’d advise switching Tippett and Charman out and getting in Zac Smith from GC plus another cheap ruck that is listed in Rnd 1 teams.

agree … there’s lots of value at North this year

as a keen North supporter (i’m not biased .. last year i only had Harvey and Ziebell and got rid of Ziebell VERY early on) i think Harvey, Swallow, Anthony, Adams, Petrie are all going to score strongly. Then there’s Tarrant down back who i’d have snapped up but he’s a fraction over priced as a virtual rookie.

hey guys i was just wanting some opinion on this strategy that i have seen from a guy on a website.

His strategy is to have

7 premium backs

2 premium Rucks

7 premium Forwards

0 premium Mids

This means that he will only need 6 upgrades for the whole season and will end up having a great midfield because he will know who is performing since mids are the highest scoring position you want to be correct with your premiums. This will sacrifice points early but he will end up having a full premium team by about round 8 ( which is earlier than most teams have a full premium team) and all he needs for the rest of his trades are for injuries and form slumps. I think it is a great strategy and i think he will get rewarded this year.
tell me what you think since i am seriously considering this strategy,

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 4

Willo March 13, 2011 at 10:15 pm

That is actually a pretty good strategy now I think about it. The pro’s outweigh the con’s IMO.

This could work:

6 premium backs + Otten, he’s pretty much a lock-in to produce some very good coin.

2 premium Rucks

7 premium Forwards

0 premium Mids + with the money you save from getting Otten over a premium, buy a midfielder who’s around $400k or save the money.

Will consider this strategy . . .

Worth considering though.

So in saying that here is my team:

B- Gibbs, Deledio, Broughton, Grimes, Adcock, Krakouer, Otten (Duigan, Toy, Hibberd)

C- Goddard, Selwood, Pendlebury, J.P.Kennedy, D.Swallow, Heppell (Harris, Bewick, I.Smith)

R- Sandilands, Cox (Smith, Derickx)

F- N.Riewoldt, Franklin, Goodes, Gray, Yarran, Petrie, Krakouer (Darling, Richardson, Matera)

Note- While Gray was injured a lot last year, he seems to have gotten his body right this year, and also is playing mainly in the midfield under Primus.

Adcock seems to be fit again and is one of my risks, he is under priced for what he can do when fit.

N.Krakouer, he is underpriced, at Port didnt seem interested but has again found his passion at GC, and you would think that Harbrow and Bock would get the forward tag before him.

Swan and Pendlebury.. maybe just choose one. I originally had them both but didn’t like the idea of losing both come the collingwood bye. I went with Pendle’s – cheaper and good chance of becoming elite this year.

Sandi, Cox

Bold move. I am not convinced bringing Petrie in for rd 5 is good use of a trade.
Here is the problem: I assume you are lining up Knights, Darling, Richardson or Prestia to cash in.
All except Darling have one bye before rd5 which means you are going to cash in after just one round of $ increase. You wil make $20K, 30K, 40K?
If you hit the jackpot and earn $50k+ the question is: if he rose that quickly what makes you think he will not earn you another 100K a few weeks later? Why not keep him around and upgrade to a premium?
My suggestion, reconsider this strategy.

I need help its 2am and I’m still supercoaching… I also need help with my midfield:

Selwood, Judd, Foley, Montagna, Pendelebury,Higgins + Irons (PA)*, Harris(GC), Swallow(GC)

* Assuming Irons is elevated to PAs senior list.

But I need to squeeze Hibberd in for doughnut protection (as he is a DPP with DEF) but I also want to put in Shuey (WCE) as a juicy mid pricer.

I could move Higgins to the FWDs and put Prestia in the MIDs for DPP but then I would have to kill Harris or Swallow to make way for Hibberd but I’m not sure that makes good ecconomic sense.

I’m starting to think that supercoaching is a bit like txt’ing your ex – both shouldn’t be done at 2am…

Thanks RB. I agree.
I asked the question because I read many comments suggesting Boyd as a mid premium option, it is like Cross is the forgotten man.
If anybody does prefer Boyd, please tell me why because I do not understand.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Richard Crabs. March 14, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Cross had a ripper of a season in 2010, lifting his average from 103 to 114, as a result of that, his price is high.
Boyd on the other hand, was averaging 120 before breaking his hand and averaged 99 for the next 6 weeks.
I think this year, he’s been thrown the captaincy and will step up, also it’ll be tough for Cross to keep his average.
Just my opinion anyway!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Kernel March 14, 2011 at 11:52 pm

For those reasons RC I favoured Boyd, but then I looked at his last 4 weeks leading into finals where I believe he was consistently in the 80s. While cross maintained his consistent 100s. The end of the season led me to believe that it is Boyd that could not maintain high scores.

Is Josh Kennedy the real deal??

Scenario:
Hurn into Gibbs
Judd into … well Kennedy (with plenty of cash left in the coffers – $153K). Can afford anyone from Dal Santo downward. Like the idea of cash in the bank and heard rave reviews of Kennedy becoming a 100pts scorer. Feels risky though compared to Hurn and Judd.

I only want one Carlton premium ’cause of their Rnd 23 bye.

Help??

Richard Crabs. March 14, 2011 at 2:10 pm

Yes.
Tough choice.
If you want the cash, then sounds like an idea, otherwise, sticking with Judd and Hurn is probably better.
Judd will score 120PPG, Hurn 90.
Gibbs 110PPG, Kennedy 95-100.
Thats my rough estimate anway.
It’s pretty similiar, but if your putting the C on Judd, first option.

Not bad Tim. Few things I’d change though.
The backs are solid, but swap Hunt for Otten, and I’d change Shaw to Duffield. Also, get Duigan somewhere on your bench. He’s next to garunteed a game round 1.
Mids are interesting…. Not very good IMO. Cross is a bit too expensive for mine…. Selwood, Judd, or Boyd would be a better pick. I would take Swallow and Polec over Conca but if your keen on him then stick to it. Callinan has a long term injury so get him out. Schnieder is at a similiar price and DPP.
Very strong Forwards.
Personally, I’d be steering clear of Watts, but this could be the year he breaks out and proves why he’s a number 1 draft pick. Not for me. I’d be looking at Knights or Petrie over him. Chapman is on the injury list aswell. Only for a week or two but i’d be steering clear.
All in all, not great. Just make some changes and you’ll be alright.

I personally wouldn’t take a risk on Drummond, I’d rather go for Hurn who’s around the same price. If you’re going for a league win then Watson’s out for the granny so you might wanna re-think that. I reckon trade Judd for Murphy, Murphy will dominate this year and he won’t get a rough tag with Judd and Gibbs around him.

A bit too top heavy midfield. Maybe downgrade Bartel or Foley, and D Swallow is a must. And with the extra cash maybe upgrade Suban, need atleast 1 more premium in your defence. H Shaw is a little too erratic for SC, maybe a more consistent scorer like Broughton for a little extra cash could be the go.

Not sure about Moran, reckon there are better R4 options out there like Dericxk or Bailey. I’m seriously considering McCoulley (Bris) for my R4 option, if Leunenberger goes down (which is likely) McCoulley could get a game.

I do like the forward line however I feel like you are again ! premium short. Too much pressure on mid-ranges like Yarran, Knights and Petrie.

Overall a pretty good team!!

Swap J Tippett for Zac Smith, more likely to get games for GC. Injury concerns with Chappy. Keep clear of the Clarke brothers, way tooooooo injury prone!!! Swap M Watson and get on Duigan, more likely to play round 1.
Great team though!!!

Hey guys, would appreciate if you told me which of these guys on each list are the best and will get plenty of early games.

Coad/ Toy/ Stanley

Matera/ Prestia/ Both

Tapscott/ Darling

And who is the best player in the mids for under 110 k for my bench?

And what does everyone think the maximum amount of Gold Coast players i should have?

In this discussion forum we tend to try and engage with each other based on opinion and research. Hodge has a niggling achilles and thats not something easily brushed off.
I’d be getting Selwood over him.
Also, somehow find a way to get Heppell in your D7 spot rather than Puopolo. Puopolo would be good on the bench but not sure about a starting position.
Hope I could help. :D

Cheaper, less injury prone, will get games, looks to improve with the Saints.
Knights gets to many soft-tissue injuries but will improve.

Either one will be a great addition to your team as they’ll both make you a stack of money.

On the surface I agree with RC, however, the issue with Judd is he misses the first final (Selwood misses final number 3). I would tend to go Boyd and keep Joey. I have expressed this already but wanted to reiterate in case others had an opinion:

I have been thinking about this for a while and my first thought agrees with RC but am now starting to lean towards having all three Saints. Here is why:
1. I do run a risk on rd 14 but hopefully by then I will have other guns in to cover and keep my scores consistent (ie. Pend & GAJ).
2. Secondly I do not feel there are plenty of other super-gun choices without a level of compromise/risk, let me go thought them:
- GAJ (groin)
- Judd (finals bye)
- Sellwood (finals bye)
- Chappy (groin)
- Hodge (foot and many other teams will have Buddy & Rioli, maybe even Bruce)
- Cross (in my team)
- Barlow (leg)
- Murphy (finals bye)
- Dal (a saint too)
- Pendle (I have Swan so covering two mids for two byes is too risky for me. Also have Krak)
- Priddis (Not confident of picking a gun in a struggling team)
- Watson (finals bye)
- Boyd (another possible option if you do not have other doggies)
- Swallow (finals bye)

So it seems there will be a comprimise somewhere – finals or rd 14 – perhaps R14 the best place for it.

You make a valid point Kernel, but what about getting to the finals? Missing out on guns like Selwood, Judd, Bartel just because of byes is an interesting decision.
Right now, I have Selwood and Bartel in the guts.

At the moment I do have Selwood but I am resisting getting a second finals bye premium. this is the interesting part. Do I risk compromising finals by burning trades, or do I compromise one round of the regular season, or do I aim for a unique sub-500k who will star? All options wear compromise and risk.
ATM I am going joey bc he scores in the ball park of the top 5 and if I can recruit pend for rd 14 I can fill the Joey hole and have one extra trade for finals. Fingers crossed.

What are peoples thoughts on the bloke that got picked up by GC at No. 2 in draft… Harley Bennell

Is he simply been overlooked due to the fact he plays in the same team as D Swallow and is a similar price and the fact there is another cheap GC in Harris?

Would he be a worthy pick in peoples team instead of say Swallow, he can obviously play and maybe unique?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

Roo Bloke March 15, 2011 at 9:38 am

Any other year he’d be in most teams but with Swallow and Harris, plus other GC rookies that people are putting in other lines, it’s too hard to squeeze him in. I wouldn’t consider him instead of Swallow, but maybe instead of Harris or Prestia.

Personally, i just think it’s smarter to go Swallow and Harris but i do hear your conundrum.

Hey all,

Been going over and over and getting closer to a final team. Let me know what you think.

DEF: Goddard, Gibbs, Delidio, Broughton, Grimes, Otten, Duigan
RES: Coad, Smith, Puopolo

MID: Pendlebury, Boyd, Kennedy, Scully, Swallow, Heppell
RSD: Harris, Buckley, Hibberd

RCK: Sandilands, Cox
RES: Smith, Dericks

FWD: Riewoldt. Pavlich, Rioli, Goodes, O’Keefe, Krakouer, Gamble
RES: Prestia, Richardson, Matera

Money left: $4,900

I’m thinking I may have one two many stars. Maybe take out O’Keefe and put two mids priced guys in or one mid priced and save a bit of money for emergencies.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers

Twitch, my thoughts are that Gibbs is a trade off in SC finals week 3, as he has the bye,and as you have both Heppell and Hibberd in the Mids, you have no Mids that can swap to the Backline. Maybe try to get one of them into the backs and maybe try to get Deledio into the Mids? Same with the Fwds, you have Pav, Goodes, ROK and Krak who can all go to the Mids, but no one to swap them with.Dual Position players may save you a couple of trades this year when used properly and trying to prevent a doughnut due to the Byes.

I think you need another Defender. I’m not sure that Astbury is your man. From what I’ve heard, he’ll be in a defensive hold down position this year that may well affect his scoring potential.
Cheney is cheaper and may be more suitable, or Heppell-DPP-or one of your rookies may give you some extra upgrade dollars.
I like your usage of DPP Players.
I’m surprised that you’ve not gone Sandi.
F/L is strong, it doesn’t look like the byes will affect you too much.

Thanks for you’re input HGL, re: Sandi, downgraded him to Mummy and with extra cash upgraded my R4 to Petrie, it might work or not time will tell. I put in Ashbury as a cheap (D/F) option because of the byes, he’ll get games and has been given Richo’s old number so the club thinks highly of him.

Backs- Good quality, has the potential to make some coin.

Mids- Great mids, 2 players out in SC finals in seperate rounds could eb a risk but if you use your cash cows and get the right upgrades you should have sufficient cover.

Rucks- I like the rucks not too over powering and a bit of a unique this year it seems in Mummy

Forwards- Seems good Brown isnt match fit so becareful of him will be a bit of a unique though, Varcoe as a handy unique on the way back from injury so a bit of a risk.

Yeah – I’m off him and gone with McGlynn as my Fwd DPP unique however I read somewhere he broke his hand on the W/E although he’s not on the injury list and I’m back on Corey in the Mids after his blow out on the W/E at that price.

I think Petrie at R3 could be a big waste if he kills it without a DPP elsewhere to get him on the field. To me if you’re gunna have him he’s gotta be in the Fwds with JT for DPP to cover R1/R2 byes. Then if he’s reproducing the 90+ ave from 2006-2009 you can get him on the field without wasting a trade.
Like the look of thosebacks though led by the Hurnimator! (Although he hasn’t made my latest team.)

At his current price, I think his great value and I’m getting 3 Guns for the price of 2. Also If one of the MILF combo go down or have a bad match up,I can put in Petrie who is better coverage than some spud that score you 20-25 a game.

Hi there,

Here are my thoughts:

- I think Astbury’s getting a bit over-rated
- I think J. Brown is a bit too much of a risk

Other than that … great stuff.

Good luck.

P.S. Would love your feedback on my conundrum: choose 2 between Grimes, Duffield and Gilbee.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

PA March 16, 2011 at 10:18 am

Gilbee hurt his hammy on the W/E not sure how long he’s out for, so process of elimination Grimes and Duffman, that’s my way of thinking and thank you for your thoughts DJ.

Still have $357k, but not sure who to upgrade

DEF: Gibbs, Deledio, Broughton, Grimes, Otten, Toy Lower
emer Hibberd, Duigan, Puopolo (maybe one of the rookies to H Shaw?)

MID: Goddard, Selwood, Pendlebury, D Swallow, Heppell, Harris
emer Gaff, Polec, I Smith (think Swan will drop have gone for Pendlebury, maybe a rookie for Judd?)

RUC: Sandi, Cox
emer Z Smith, J Tippett (not sure on two GC rookies, but only Derickx stands out and I’m not convinced he’ll play)

FWD: Reiw, Franklin, Pavlich, Goodes, Higgins, Knights, A Krak
emer Richardson, Matera, Darling (Would like to have McKernan but have gone with these rookies, thinking about Dangerfield)

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Happy Go Lucky March 15, 2011 at 2:04 pm

You need at least 1 more defender.
J.Tippett will more than likely not play, his R4 value comes from his DPP status making him swappable with Petrie Dish in the F/L to cover the Ruck byes. Therefore, w/o Petrie, why bother with JT?
That said, you have a pretty strong team.

I have Matera, Richardson and McKernan on the bench.
Do your worst people.

oh and my reasoning is, Buddy = 100+ most weeks, Cyril close to 100 each week if stays fit with playing between forward and middle, Varcoe is the new GAJ=100 most weeks imo. Yarran gonna play across half back and be Carltons new QB, loadsa touches and easy marks playing kickabout down there!!, est 80 most weeks, Krak is just a super talent and doesnt seem to do much wrong-70-100 most weeks. HIggins has to come good, he just has to at this stage, if so 80-100 most weeks. Goodes having great pre season, seems up for a good year, 90 -110 most weeks imo this year.

PA March 15, 2011 at 9:31 pm

Backs — N. Krak, he butchers the ball which will result as clangers and decreasing his overall score, so just beware of that. As you said Adcock is a risk, but it could work in your favor because the rest of us will be steering clear of him. The rest of your backs are very solid.
Mids — Imo, I think you’re missing a gun in M4 spot, I’m not sold on JPK just yet. Rooks look good, you might want to get in a Tiger or Port rook as they don’t have a bye til R11/12, just the right time for the milking
Rucks — Solid, expect for Derickx looks like he’s not impressing Harwick as yet.
Fwds — Like your mix of Talls and Smalls and the likes of Gray and Yarran will be spending more time this year in the middle or near the action.
Nice effort WD-40, you should do well this year.

Alright folks – time to put it all out there. Going overall (can’t believe everyone isn’t having a crack from the start.) Team for Rd 1 as follows:
Goddard, Gibbs, Duffield, Grimes, Hurn, Duigan, Lower
Coad, Puopolo, Hibberd
Judd, Montagna, Pendlebury, Corey, Delidio, Krakeour
D Swallow, Harris, Bewick
Cox, Leuenberger (Sexy German meat roll combo)
Z Smith, J Tippett
N Reiwoldt, Franklin, Rioli, McGlynn, Vezspremi, Richardson, Tapscott
Petrie, Darling, I Smith
Obviously a GnR strategy. I have factored in the multi-bye and finals situation and have calculated that I will have enough trades and DPP to counter this. The obvious misses are Heppell and Otten however I’m not convinced they will be as valuable cows as others although my fall back is to downgrade Hurn to one of them and upgrade another Def rookie and Berger to Sandi.

Interesting team you have there Deano with some nice uniques. Like me you’ve got Buddy and Delicious.
Your forward line looks a lot weaker than your other lines, but, I guess that is where you see the growth potential.
I presume you’ll be looking to upgrade Judd into Swan, Ablett, or the gun midfielder somewhere around Rd 11-15. Gibbs a bit later.

I’m really not buying the “can’t have premiums for SC finals time” arguement yet HGL. Past winners have been successful not by their initial lineups only but by their astute trading strategy therefore yes if I have to revert to a leagues basis then I believe I have the trades available. Lets face it though – there’s only so many league wins you can over the years (sorry Motts and PA) before going for the major prize so my thinking is that this is an ideal year with the additional factors to attempt the win.

Thanks mate but rd 6 only sees me lose two guns from the Fwds one from mids and one from Def so with DPP and good rookies I think the damage will be minimised. My Rd 4/5 strategy is the same and why I don’t have any more than two guns that are “byeing” at the same time in each line albeit thet may come from the same team (eg: Buddy and Cyril.)

Other than that … well thought out.

Good luck.

P.S. Would love your feedback on my conundrum: choose 2 between Grimes, Duffield and Gilbee.

Nothing wrong with rating other peoples teams, or tinkering with mine at 1.20 am…….. is there? *_*
Easton Wood is a nice selection. I’ve been looking at him.
I’m not keen on ROK, but your team is sound and strong.

giving ROK a chance, 90 avg last year ok by me, and he was injured and asked to tag a bit last year, I think he may just step up.

He’s a cheap prem if he comes off. You’ll look like genius.

Nothing at all wrong about doing SC at 1:20am 8 days out from the final lockout. But look, i think i’m on SC alert 24/7 so i’m pretty sure i’m not a reliable opinion on this matter.

Hi there,

Here are my thoughts:

- I wouldn’t replace Heppell with Duigan, I’d have BOTH (get rid of Buckley)
- Not sure that McKernan will get a good run

Other than that … great stuff.

Good luck.

P.S. Would love your feedback on my conundrum: choose 2 between Grimes, Duffield and Gilbee.

Def is not bad although Wood is a risk for me as I think Gilbee will revert to the rebounder and Buckley is highly unlikely to get a game;
Mids are excellent although Gaff may be used as a sub early rds to ease him in so would consider Polec/Conca for the same price;
R1,R2 great but you have no bye coverage with both res’s unlikely to play – consider Z Smith
Fwds look well balanced with some uniques you are obviously keen on.
7.5/10 for me Gilly

thanks for feedback Deano, taken on board. I’ll stick with Wood and Gaff, Buckley and ruck spares may change.
Cheers.

Did Irons make the senior list @ Port?

Not yet – and I don’t think they have a spot so it will depend on whether they pull a LTI.
Don’t think he will get an early game anyway on my analysis HGL as he will be competing for one spot with Hartlett, Pittard and Banner. Would be nice if he was an inside mid however Port obviously don’t know how to recruit them otherwise Boak would be a gun.

Have Boak in my DT. A speculative pick.

Thats what I thought, but, I was wondering why there was no mention of Irons yesterday.

I heard an interview with an assistant coach at PA on Sunday and he said they were still considering a couple of players, one being Irons. You might say they have a couple of irons in the fire…

Good day to all,

Whilst I’m pretty comfortable with the team I’ve got, I’d love some thoughts on one last conundrum … choosing two (2) defenders from three (3):

Gilbee
Duffield
Grimes

Which two (2) of these would you all recommend? Gilbee’s got the DPP (but injury concerns), but I really like the way Duffield plays, and similarly Grimes is in GREAT form (injury concerns though).

Thanks in advance.

Are people not worried about Grimes’ injury concerns?

Is this an Agent Smith type of Motts recreating himself across the web, a fake Motts, or has Motts simply removed his photo from his profile pic?

Will the real Motts Shady please stand up?

Thanks to all who responded … seems like a bit of an easy question considering the consensus.

If you’re able to, I’d love your thoughts on my team (below in a following post).

Roo Bloke’s Mob Version 3.7

Think i’m nearly there. Feel a little underdone in the midfield this round but Swallow and Harris will beef it up next week as will Petrie up forward.
DEF: Goddard (c), Gibbs, Deledio, Broughton, Grimes, Otten, Duigan (Hibberd – emerg, McKernan, Coad)
MID: Selwood, Pendlebury, Swallow A, Kennedy, Smith, Wallis (Heppell – emerg, Swallow D, Harris)
RUCK: Sandilands, Cox (Smith, Tippett J)
FWD: Riewoldt N, Franklin, Brown J, Higgins, Knights, Krakouer, Richardson (Darling – emerg, Petrie, Matera)
$19K left

Only things concerning me are:
> Kennedy – i know there’s plenty of evidence to suggest he’s about to take a step up in SC scoring but for some reason i have this nagging suspicion.
> Brown – when he’s fit he posts consistently awesome scores (and sometimes even when he’s not fit). Originally had Dangerfield and left over cash. Thoughts??

Thanks for the comments … I’ll reciprocate:

- I think Knights is over-rated
- I can’t see J. Tippett getting a game
- As with your comment, J. Brown can’t be trusted this year.

Good luck.

DJ
> Tippett isn’t there to get a game but to offer flexibility with Petrie so he can play fwd but move into rucks to cover any missed games by Sandi and Cox
> Brown is one i will weigh up good and hard over the next week.

PA
> See what you are saying, currently think Smith will score higher than Darling, just like i think Duigan will score more than Heppell and Hibberd. Will look into these selections more closely in the next day or two.
