  1. Been messing around with the team heaps and it’ll change heaps after jlt, especially rookies. Nothing too risky here.

Mid: Macrae Cripps Dunkley Danger Oliver Rowell McHenry Pickett (Robertson Mead Hibbard)

    Rucks: Grundy Gawn (Comden)

    1. That forward line made me throw up a little bit in my mouth. 2 rookies and 2 injury prone players. A lot of risk to get the extra premo mid.

  3. What’s everyone’s thoughts on Jack Martin as a potential F3? Interesting as there’s not many great options and he is moving to a better club and situation for him, maybe he breaks out?

    3

    1. Thinking about Jack at F3 myself, his an outside player who has now learnt how to win inside thanks to GC getting flogged each week,
Carlton have the biggest bull in the comp, pair with immensely talented forwards i think his in for a good year.

  4. Would it be bizarre to start without Dusty? Currently have him at f2
    My thinking is the following;

    – Trade dusty out, swing S Hill fwd… Leaving my fwd line
    (Whitfield, D Smith, A Bonar, S Hill, N Cockatoo, I Rankine)
Swing Rivers down back to cover for Hill, then that leaves me enough funds to go 6 deep in the mids and bring Dangerfield in my team.

Mids; Macrae, Fyfe, Cripps, Dunkley. Dangerfield, Oliver, Rowell, Pickett

Hope that makes sense to the community. I made the bold decision not to start Martin last season and it paid off i felt. I know he has fwd status this year, however I fee like he is overs. Does anyone agree with me or am i being ludicrous????

Tu; Good idea, start without dusty and go 6 deep in the mids

Td; Dusty is a must start

    1. Hey Olie, nice work mate. I have flirted with starting with the 6 premium mids, but am a little concerned that I may not be able to jump on an extra fallen premo when the time is right. I feel like it limited me a bit. But the big scores come from the mids and you will certainly have some firepower in there. I currently have Smith as F3 (Gawn still my R2 atm) but have heard that he may not be spending too much time in the mids. If true it worries me having him at F3. It’s going to be a bit of a POD move not starting Dusty, so love the fact you are looking to go against the grain and think outside the box. What is your backline looking like mate?
      Edit: just saw it below!

      1. Hey DR, cheers for the feedback. What is your backline looking like?
Fair effort if you managed 6 premos in the middle and have Smith at f3 with the twin towers in the ruck.

      1. Yeah Rancy, thought it better to have a solid midfielder than a flakey forward. Will wait and pick up Dusty later but the rest of the forward line is a wait and see who breaks out. Thanks for your comments…..M

    2. Nice work Maxy and a great first post for the year! I would hate coming up against that midfield in round 1! Only main concern is Walters at F2. Had a great season last year, but there’s something in my gut that says don’t pick him. Probably just a personal thing, as he has let me down on a couple of occasions in the past! Loving your work mate.

    1. M, if you backline stays healthy it’s ok but, for me, it’s too risky. I wouldn’t have both Doedee and Roberton in the same side. One or the other, paired with Doc is risky enough. I haven’t gone for Whitfield either, although I can see why some coaches have. He has only managed 20+ games in a season once over the past 4 years. Good luck…..M(ax).

      1. Dont really know all the stats like some others do. Had a quick look online (hopefully from somewhere reputable haha) and what I saw backed up my thoughts of him that I had in my head.
        – rarely misses a game (0 in the past 2 seasons if you take out that suspension I believe)

        – has a decent ceiling with a number of scores 130+

        – has a good basement. Only 2 scores under 80 in the past 2 seasons

Just consistent and you know what you’re going to get. I dont think the acquisition of TK will have a negative impact on him either.

    1. I like the structure, but think you’ll need a back-up plan for Jacobs going down. He’s too big a risk for me, simply because he may leave you stranded unless you’re willing to use two trades should it occur.

      1

      1
      1. Jacobs has been bullet proof for years, last year was an out of the box injury – plus the environment around the club was shite- Jacobs is a down hill skier- you can’t be a bad ruck with that midfield under you.

    1. It looks great apart from MID-strength.

The downside for me is that you’ll likely want a min. 5 MID premos. And I can’t see there being 7 mid rookies worth having this year, so it’s likely important.

That’ll obviously mean compromising other lines if your bank is minimal, but think you should do it. Maybe clear your D3&D8, your M11 and your F3&F8.

Pick another über MID and then try and refill the holes you have left, making sure you’re happy.

      Good luck

    First of many – thoughts?????
This is a first for me to only go 4 premo’s , in the midfield generally a minimum of 5.

Stacked the back (set and forget)

Forwards 3 risky selections in most eyes- I only see the one though.

Big sauce with freakish midfield should get a few/lot token tap to advantages….

    1. I’ve seen that going with 3 premium defenders, 6 premium mids, 2 premium rucks and 2 premium forwards with the remainder as rookies as a tactic that seems to get strong upvote support. It allows you to focus on upgrading your back and forward lines as the best scorers reveal themselves through the season. The highest predicted scorers for midfield and rucks are more certain, so you lock with much more confidence. Hope this helps.

    1. Hey, Hynsi. Good to see you around again.

Nothing wrong with your structure or most of you picks, but I’d be a bit concerned with the FWD line. A bit too much risk with Lynch and Greenwood imo.

Lynch being a KPP is always going to rely on goals to score decently, having only ever tonned up when he bags 4+ goals (with the exception of two 3 goal games in R17 and 18).

Plenty of people on this site are bullish on him, saying he doesn’t play as deep FWD with Riedwoldt back but consider that he only averaged 71.4 last year. Even being generous and only looking at his patch of hot form at the end of the year, he still put up scores of 71 and 47.

If you think he is going to boot 88+ goals in 2020 (4 goals a game for 100+ SC), then start him- but I don’t think that’s realistic given the range of FWD talent at Richmond and the more attention he’s gonna cop. Jack Darling 2.0, mark my words…

As for Greenwood, I’m not as averse to starting him compared to Lynch because we just don’t have a lot of intel on him rn. However banking on him to shred it in the Gold Coast midfield is tenuous; it’s not certain that he’s going to have a solid midfield role (inside or otherwise) and might end up as a HF with midfield bursts like Stringer.

Let’s say for arguments sake that he does get that midfield role, would you still start him? The Suns rank the worst for SC points, notorious for feeding opponents and they’ll be coming up against the midfields of Geelong, Sydney and GWS within the first 6 rounds. Not to mention, he was brought to the Suns for leadership and development rather than elite midfield capacity.

That said, his pre-season will be telling. Will need a clear midfield role and the Suns will need to show some structure and improvement through the middle.

For now though, Hynsi, I’d be looking at a combination of Whitfield, Walters, Dusty and Heeney in your FWD line. If you’re not convinced, at least don’t start BOTH Lynch and Greenwood- only roll the dice with one.

      Best of luck.

  21. First of many most likely

Def- Sicily, DBJ, Doch, Young, Gould, Bianco, ( McLennan, Worrel)

Mid- Macrae, Dunkley, Danger, Bont, Oliver, Rowell, Pickett, McHenry (Mead, Rivers, Ely Smith)

    Rucks- Grundy, Gawn (Comben)

Fwds- Whitfield, Dusty, Ablett, Hill, Cockatoo, Rankine (Cameron, Cavarra)

I see everyone picking dan Houston for his avg after the byes but I feel as though DBJ was the one that benefited the most, 102.7 avg excluding the 7 against north when Houston moved into the mids.

Once Dunkley moved into the mids all 3 of them tonned up 8 of 15 times, bont scored 99 in 2 of the other 7 macrae and Dunkley went 130+ in 7 of the 15 while the bont did it in 6.

And the Ablett pick I just see Geelong having a big year and Ablett and danger being a big reason to why.

    2

    0
    1. Jake, Ablett manager expects him to only play 18 games this year and be rested often, in preparation for a finals tilt. Don’t know if that changes your thinking. Pairing Ablett with Whitfield who only averages around 18 games per season could be bit risky. Cheers and good luck…….M

  23. Here we go again.
I’ve tried a different structure with Goldie instead of Gawn and a 4 Uber 4 rookie on field mid set up. I felt more comfortable adding in Dusty at F2 (he will be a top 6 forward) at his price point, than T Kelly or Cogs at M5 ( less likely to be top 8 mids)
Doedee and Stevens are there as “Cow like objects” I would prefer to down grade one, and upgrade the other . It’s dependent on Marsh form and rookie availability.

    Laird Sicily Doc
    Doedee Young Gould
    McLennan Bianci

    Macrae Neale Cripps
    Oliver Rowell Bonnar
    Pickett Bytel
    McHenry Rivers Williams

    Grundy Goldie Comben

    Whit Dusty Greene
    Stevens S Hill Cockatoo
    Rankine King

    I have just over a $100k left.
This is to Allow for getting Big Max back in, or depending on the Rookies I may need to turn Dusty into Dunkley / Danger at M6.

    1. Michael, nothing wrong with your backline, just keep it as-is and wait for rookie selection for rd1. I am more worried about your forward line. Whitfield is expensive and rarely sees out a full year without injury. Gray is past his best and almost certain to spend most game time up forward. Also the forwards have more scope for good rookies, so I would downgrade Gray and upgrade a mid to a premium you have the cash. Up to you on Whitfield. Good luck…..M

      1

      2
      1. Lolololol. Start with whitfield. If he is injured use a trade to get ANY other player. I can’t believe people are telling you to not go near whitfield, when he will most likely be the top fwd by 10+ points.

He has a point with gray – he is 31 and on a downhill slide. 85 average at best, so unless you want a big gamble, look at the cheaper options.

        Good luck this year mate

      1

      2
      1. I disagree. People are getting them in as stepping stones – all they need in reality is five to six decent games from them. If they play more and score well then they are keepers until they are injured. One trade is not the end of the world, especially if it was anticipated.

        2

        0
        1. Name one midfielder below 300k that will average anywhere near what the top will, and you see the importance of saving as much money for the ‘big’ lines as you can.

People said kast year that having both williams and smith was too much injury risk. They were wrong. Happens every year

Take your risk on the defence.

Im not the biggest fan on anything other than G&G rucks, but take the risj their too if you want. If the ruck works out, your team has nothing but potential, and maybe it is that difference that gets you ahead.

    2. Williams in 2019 –

      when Whitfield misses: 124 avg
      when Whitfield plays: 94 avg

If you aren’t happy with Lairds 95 average, then Williams might not be your answer.

      2

      1
    3. Laird has proven for a number of years he is a reliable and solid premo defender. Daniel has had 3/4 of a year where he looks good to average 95-100. Daniel is also more expensive for what i consider will be a similar output for the two.

Laird has a new coach now meaning i am expecting Adelaide as a team to improve this year. Laird scores better when the team scores better. Last year was seen as a somewhat disappointing season and he still averaged 96.8. Most see upside in him but if he doesn’t improve you still take that 95-100 every day.

Also B.Smith is expecting to play more of a wing role this season and Milera is expected to get more midfield time. This may make Laird the main man across half back again. Only question is what the impact of Gibbs at HB will be.

  29. Hi Jess,
Sicily is more than likely spending more time in defence this season and going back to his role of intercepting kicks. Daniels is solid but I worry he will get shut down and not allowed to run off. Williams is a gun and I have seen quite a few people include him. I think the majority of scers are placing more emphasis on the 5-6 mids and that means Williams may not be included with his high price tag.

  30. Usually I run at least 1 mid price risk on each line, currently have only Jacobs between $463k & $273k (Greenwood & Doedee). I’m not confident on any Def premos to maintain starting value over first half of season, so running thin there and gone deeper in the Mids/Fwds. Would look to upgrade any fallen premos there first.
I’m hoping/risking Naismith or a similar priced ruck plays and Grawndy put a couple of sub par scores in the first half of the year. Obviously starting them likely saves some trades, but I can’t see them going up in value or burning me badly at that price point. The set and forget plus captaincy confidence is nice to have though!
$75k in bank, pondering if I should turn Walters into Sicily.

  31. With $100 in the bank and Jackson Mead out, I had to dig into my side, yet I have persevered. Ignore the 8 premiums missing in Round 13. At M4, Dangerfield is switched to Oliver. Mahony goes from FWD bench to MID bench. Rankine goes from F6 to FWD bench. Jackson Mead is traded to Nakia Cockatoo who slots in at F6.

    $800 remaining.

  32. Am I in the vast minority thinking Docherty isn’t a great pick, unless he dominates the pre season matches?

$436k for someone coming off 2 ACL’s, and hasn’t played the past 2 seasons.

    Currently in 52% of teams.

I see way more risk than reward, if he dominates, worst case you pick him up mid season having increased $100k-150 (an amount you want rookies to have increased at a minimum). Surely there is a decent chance he gets rested/injured/doesn’t average 100 in the 1st half of the year as he hasn’t played in 2 years, with the game and team changing vastly. Plus some concerns how he fits back into the team and his role? IMO too risky that you end up burning a trade and possibly cash at a time you want to be improving other areas of your team.

He’s simply at too awkward a price for me. I can see the potential him becoming a premo sub $500k (eg Williams last year at $408k), but I felt way more comfortable picking him last year due to natural improvement, having a defined role, and having shown plenty in a couple of games late in the year prior coming back from the Achilles injury.

    1. Docherty is the #1 lock of 2020. Like second selected behind Charlie Comben. In that scenario, you’re basically a trade behind everyone else. He’s priced like 30 below his peak season so far. He was the standout #1 defender. He doesn’t even need to reach that level again. And if it goes wrong, half the comp (and 95% of serious players, are in the same boat.) Likelihood of something going wrong is moderate, true, with the ACL. The risk is non-existent. If he was $200k, even $100k more expensive, I’d definitely see the argument. But at his price, and with his potential, and the amount of coaches selecting him, the potential reward makes selecting him an absolute no brainer.

Having said all that, back yourself in and trust your research.

      2

      0
    2. Don’t forget Docherty is the captian and did a mountain of coaching work whilst injured and was still a big presence at the club. There is absolutely no concern with how he will fit back into the team. He would have been working with the defensive group even when not playing. They all would have so much trust and belief in him. I can’t see them not feeding the ball to him off half back. He slots straight back in as the main leader.

Docherty is also priced at 80 for a guy who has gone 115! Obviously he wont go 115 but even if he goes 90-95 thats still a success. Worst case scenario he is still 10 points underpriced.

If you don’t start him and he dominates like you said and goes 110 you are wasting a trade to bring him in (if you bring him in early as a corrective trade), have missed out on incredible value and can’t recover the points (because if Docherty dominates he will outscore who you pick ahead of him. What other defender can go / has gone 110?)

I don’t see the risk. Absolute lock

    1. Thanks to the mystery that is how the AFL do their fixture Bont could get two Deboar tags and 1 Jacob Tag before his bye.

      Round 3,4 and 13.

      Upgrade target for me.

  34. Thoughts on DBJ?
Not getting much attention at all. Really liked him towards the back end of last season. Am I missing something here?

    2

    2
    1. DBJ and Houston are both in my backline at the moment. Houston running through the midfield (more so now Wines is out) will leave more points for DBJ in the backline. Both set for a breakout. And I’m not even a Port supporter.

      6

      2
    2. Need to see how much midtime Houston is getting before I think of including DBJ but agree that he will score well and could be a good POD.

  38. Trying a slightly different formation this year (3-6-2-2 premo structure). DBJ, T Kelly and Greenwood are my PODs in starting line-up. I’m backing Greenwood to be a top 10 forward this year. Zerk-Thatcher has potential as a high flying intercept marker for the Bombers – will track him closely in JLT.

    1. Not sure you will find enough cheap backline rooks to go that light in defence. Your forward line isn’t going to provide too many points. That’s the trade off for going with a 6 deep premium midfield I guess.

      1. Hanners finished his last three rounds last year at a ave 106 and the word is he is fit and ready to go . He is only 28 so he may have a big year and the saints will improve too. Stevens is a risk but he is at Geelong this year i really only want him to play six games and same goes for S,hill. Lets hope they play in one of the pre season games so we can get a look.

Titch might start a bit slow.
I would look at another mid with a full pre-season.

The whole Smith or Stevens debate should get decided in the Marsh series.

The rest of your side looks great.

      Best of luck in 2020.

        1. Thats great Tommy.

Oliver is very good value,he always plays 22 games, is young enough to get better. Now with a solid preseason and favourable draw he is a very safe pick.

          Danger is Danger. Safe pick.

I wouldn’t start the other guys.
I can’t see them top 8 MID at years end.

    1. Let me know how that goes for you.

If anything, pick the gun midfielders.

Contrary to the belief of some, you dont need a completely POD team to win.

I wish you good luck but would consider revising your m2-4

      7

      1. Yep. Jess is exactly right.

The one line you want to avoid too many PODs is the MID. At most, maybe only go for one at M5-6 and even then they should be proven performers.

Eg. Lots of us have T. Kelly at M5/6.

    1. I had both Smith and Steven in my first cut but most will recommend having one or other – let’s see what happens during Marsh but I’m likely to go Steven over Smith given Geelong needs to plug the T Kelly gap and you have remember Smith scored really well before the Bombers had Shiel.

      1

      1. On of these lads Narkle Constable Cockatoo Parfitt, will inherit Tim Kelly role in the team.

Steven, and also Smith if they do not average over 90+ is a risky selection.

Smith has been in and out of my team a thousand times. Hard to ignore at his price.

Steven I have not even considered.

        Good Luck.

  46. Genuine question –
    Jack Crisp or Dan Houston

Crisp is now 26 coming into the prime of his career and hasn’t missed a game in 4 years or Houston who potentially will get minutes in the midfield and potentially can score 100+ weekly.

Is Houston the real deal or the 2020 SC version of Alex Witherden?

Can Crisp go to another level and sit next to SC DEF royalty Liard Lloyd and co?

    1

    2
    1. I had Crisp all last year expecting a breakout season and whilst he did improve, he doesn’t use the ball as well as he might and it hurts his scoring potential.

I am on the Houston train this year and might even start him at M6 since he will definitely be playing up the ground more, especially early in the season with Wines being out.

      1

      0
    2. Don’t know if Houston is the real deal or not, but he has a much better chance than Crisp. All things considered, Crisp looks highly likely to average a lot less than his best season of 95ppg -most likely in the 80s somewhere. Out of the two i’d pick Houston, but he is far from a certainty himself. Highly consider neither

  49. Probably not for this thread but how much are people taking the byes into account? It seems I’m fine for Rounds 12 and 14 but I am a few players short in Round 13. What’s the plan from everyone else?

    1. Some plan heavily, some plan a bit and some wing it. It’s your season, ask how you plan on approaching them and people will provide help.

    1. Nah. He’s a good player IRL, but like a lot of good midfielders, he will just be stuck in that 100-105 average no-man’s-land. Not bad enough to drop, but not good enough to keep you competitive.
