  1. Currently looking at:

    DEF R. Laird, L. Whitfield, C. Blakely, Z. Williams, S. Collins, J. Scrimshaw
    (M. Hore, H. Wigg)

    MID J. Macrae, P. Cripps, L. Neale, M. Crouch, Z. Merrett, A. Miles, L. Stocker, C. Constable
    (B. Bewley, B. Woodcock, N. Hind)

    RUCK B. Grundy, B. Longer
    (D. Fort)

    FWD P. Dangerfield, I. Heeney, J. Dunkley, W. Setterfield, S. McAdam, J. Corbett
    (M. Parker, B. Cavarra)

Feeling fairly content with my premos (unsure if Grundy will back it up but ownership is too high to miss if he does). A couple riskier ones and some higher priced rookies that could change, but played it safe last year and it was by far my worst run out.

    1. I like the look of this,
but that might be because its a very similar set up to my team.
only one im not really sold on is Longer.
      But the rest looks great.

      1. Cheers mate, I don’t expect a ton from Longer but I am not convinced by any rucks right now. Grundy will probably be top 2 but aside from what who knows so I’m thinking plan a trade there to whoever looks the stuff and instead have another mid/def I have more confidence in.

        6

        1. The biggest problem is not that Brodie Grundy and Maxy Gawn are both so expensive, it isn’t even that ruck history shows one or both will likely fall from their top 2 position, but that both have the same bye, the same bye as lots of other premium players.

Going Stef Martin as a substitute doesn’t help. Relying on back up 3rd rucks like Darcy Fort or Sam Naismith is pointless, because they have the same bye.

The only alternative “premium” ruckman available is Todd Goldstein.

For once, I’m tempted to just write off the whole principle of trying to structure for the byes and take the hit for one week.

          2

          0
          1. I’ve always tried to pick my rucks separate from bye structure just since there are always limited options and cover. If its a matter of deciding between a couple, byes are a great way but overall I’d rather compensate for two ruck premos with the same bye on other areas of the field.

I just have a feeling I’m going to use at least a trade this year on the rucks so rather just plan for that with a cheapy rather than trying to guess the top ruck this year.

    2. I’m not on the Miles train, he’s not a keeper so will cost a trade. Why pick him ahead of Walsh who is cheaper and probably has just as good Job security? Solid side otherwise. Will Libba back effect Dunkley and Macrae?

      3

      6
      1. Probably because Walsh will cost you a trade too, score you less pts and likely make you no more cash than Miles.

        16

        2
      2. I see him kind of in the Taranto ilk. Best case he can be an M9/10, more likely as allsaints said well he will score higher than a rookie/premium rookie and make similar cash to a Walsh, plus the extra starting money in him means less to spend on an upgrade.

        7

      3. You may be forgetting Miles history. He should average more than Walsh very easyly and play midfield all year.

        1

        0
        1. Yes, but is he a keeper? At $342 he’s in a very awkward place, which is why him, Hannebery and Roberton have all dropped out of my team.

If Miles is just for $150k cash gain, he needs to average 90, which is certainly believable, but that certainly doesn’t make him a keeper in the midfield.

To be a keeper for the midfield he’d need to be up around at least 105. Not gonna happen, imho.

For the same $150k gain, Sam Walsh only needs to average 65. If Sam Walsh averages 75 he will make $200k, which is far from impossible, and there are plenty of rookies who have managed well beyond that.

For Anthony Miles to gain $200k, he’s up at a 100 point average, at which case you’re stuck with either accepting him being at best an M8 and losing 5-10 points per round to save a trade, or bide your time for a straight swap for a fallen premo, leaking points each round.

The other issue is how long it takes a higher priced player to go up. Sam Walsh averaging 65 ppg will be ready for the culling way earlier than Miles at a 90 ppg average.

If Miles was $300k or less, the maths would be a lot more firmly in his favour. He’s not a bad option, because he will certainly score well, be a best 22 player, and go up in price. But he’s a middle of the road option that won’t go up enough to get you up the top rankings.

          1

          3
          1. Can’t help but disagree HH. Sorry.

The BEST performing premium-priced rookie last year was Ben Jacobs. He was priced at $200k because he had a missed a year, was mature-aged (25) and posted three 100+s in the first 10 rounds and still only made $173K come Rd 10.

Now I have NO DOUBT that Sam Walsh is an absolute gun and to compare him to Ben Jacobs is an insult, but NONE of the other premium-priced rookies got even close to that sort of money gain before the byes. NONE. Not Rayner, Brayshaw, Cerra etc. Even Holman who started at $102k took ten rounds to make $200k, from a starting price that is $106k cheaper than Walsh’s in 2019.

Miles on the other hand, has NEVER had an LTI, is a proven SC scorer due to his on-ball ability, likely has a key MID-role at a club lacking both depth and experience and is eager to prove what the Tigers have let go of. Now 27, he should be in his absolute prime. When he was in favour at Tigerland he averaged 95.3 over 53 consecutive games, over three seasons.

It is CONSISTENCY in scoring that leads to quick cash generation and Miles is very consistent (with only two scores under 70 in those last two seasons).

I believe he will score 20-25+more points (on average), make significantly more money (and quicker) and at worst is an M9 for the long-haul.

There are also enough cheaper, mature-aged rookies who sit plenty above Walsh for me on my MID-Rookie list, to have him nowhere near starting. I will make sure I have the cash to make a rookie correction should he turn out to be the freak everyone says he is tho! 😉

I’m just not convinced that is gonna happen. It’s a huge step-up for him, whereas Miles knows exactly what he’s gonna be up against.

            5

            1
            1. Actually, Miles probably has no more knowledge of what he’s up against than Sam Walsh has.

He’s going from a top side, a recent premiership side, to a basketcase at the bottom of the ladder which has just lost all of it’s star players, where the coach and players haven’t gelled and their playing style is a work in progress, and every possession is a rushed one under enormous pressure.

It’s also quite likely he’ll be attracting a LOT of opposition heat, with no Dusty, no Cotchin etc, and the umps will be more inclined to turn a blind eye to it as well. The Tiges have got over 100 more free kicks than the Suns during this period.

Also, the Suns have averaged 100 supercoach points *per game* less per year than the tigers between 2016 and 2018.

Only two players still on the Suns list have managed to average over 90 in the last 3 years – Lyons once and Witts twice.

All in all it adds up to players under more pressure, and getting lower scores than they would elsewhere.

Looking at all this sort of information is the reason I’ve gone off Miles. Miles will be doing very well indeed to match his best form at the Tigers at the Suns imho.

              1

              4
              1. I did a little digging and found a couple of the Suns mids started the year well in 2018.

For the first 6 rounds last year.

                Swallow scored 4 ton’s (2 x 120+) and averaged 104.

J Lyons had a couple of massive scores ( 152 and 138 ) and he managed to average 103.

With Lyons moving next door to Brisbane.

Why cant Miles walk straight into his role and start well at the very least ?

The main reason I would also look at Miles is his durability. All the other Midpriced mids still have serious question marks about their fitness.

I still may leave him out, if enough Midfield rookie option present themselves . But…Miles is my “go to option” at M6 if they don’t.

                1

                0
                1. How miles performs isn’t the issue for me. It’s how much other carnage you have to deal with before moving him on. If he averages 90 you think he can wait every week. Before long it’s round 18 and he’s still there. And the weeks you really need him to pull through he will dish up a 70.id rather a rookie you know you have to move them on asap.

                  2

                  0
                  1. I do here you TOF.

As I mentioned above . Miles is my “go to” if not enough ( less than 6) good Rookies show up round one.

In this case I will treat him as a rookie ( pricey I know ) but hopefully high scoring as far as rookies go.

As he has the late Bye he will probably need to stay until then. If I feel he hasn’t done enough. I will have no hesitation in swapping him out for any R12 or R13 Bye players, hopefully for not too many $$.

I will also have the option to downgrade him all the way to any midfield rookie “on the bubble” and afford a double upgrade forward and back.

I must say I would NOT recommend starting Miles at M5.

I must also add. I am a big believer in staring as many durable Premos as is possible. Hopefully avoiding the Carnage you speak of. There will be Injuries and unforeseen set backs,( this tends to happen more around the Byes and later in the season as players get tired ) ,but if you plan well enough and make smart picks to begin with. You should be able to miss the worst of it.

Remember to mainly pick durability over potential and you should be alright.

                    1. Actually thats my main issue, starting him at m5. He will be heavily outscored at that position.
I’m not dead set against him, far from it. I just see so many teams with him at m5, I just think to myself ok, just put a premium at m5 and i’m infront. I would happily run him at m6 to outscore a rookie.

    3. Your team looks extremely strong imho. I think Longer is your weakest link but understand what you save there with him you can invest in those strong mids.

    4. Scrimshaw just missed the cut on mine, think he’s got a lot of promise with the Hawks.

MacAdam is sounding more to be a late starter, but I think he’ll be a real goer in time.

Parker is looking like a sneaky to jump the queue on the Saints consistently woeful forward line. One to watch for sure.

  2. I think im pretty settled with this team.
Ideally id like to have Sicily instead of Witherden, but just cant find the cash anywhere to do it.
Let me know what you think.

    DEF:
    Laird, Whitfield, Witherden
    Williamson, Collins, Wilkie
    (Hore, Wigg)

    MID:
    Macrae, Cripps, Neale, Martin
    Merrett, Miles, Stocker, Constable
    (Bewley, Valante, Hind)

    RUCK:
    Grundy, Goldstein
    (Bines)

    FWD:
    Dangerfield, Heeney, Dunkley
    Setterfield, Corbett, Parker
    (McAdam, Cavarra)

-$2,500 Left in bank. (bugger all i know, but lets see what happens after JLT with rookies)

    2

    4
    1. Macrae to a Fyfe/Kelly/Oliver and Collins to a cheaper rookie should give you the funds to get Witherden up to Sicily. Hell, even dropping both Collins and Williamson to cheapies should give you enough cash.

      5

      1
    2. I like the Witherden pick actually, Sicily is a safer gun of course but think it could be a good risk. Like the team though, I’m personally on the wait and see side for Dusty but can see the rationale.

    1. Like this. If I’m being super critical, there’s a few question marks over def rookies at the moment, but with the big 2 in the rucks you have to make a cut somewhere. Good job!

      1

      1. Thanks for feed back Chillo! Going with Grundy and Gawn, then with 5 straight Premos in midfield it does leave me exposed down back. If there is a lack of rookies down back that will play rd 1 ,I maybe will be forced to take a premo midfielder out and bring Miles in to free some cash up for Possibly Roberton If he looks good in the Jlt or other option would be to go back Grundy and Goldstein and have 4 Premos + Miles and then bring another premo defender in like a Sicily or Laird.

        2

  4. $161k remaining. Gone very heavy in defence

DEF: Lloyd, Sicily, Whitfield, Blakely, Scrimshaw, Wilkie (Burgess, Wigg)

MID: Cripps, Oliver, Fyfe, Kelly, Zerrett, Stocker, Constable, Hind (Smith, Valente, Bewley)

    RUC: Grundy, Longer (Fort)

FWD: Danger, Heeney, Wingard, Setterfield, McAdam, Corbett (Cavarra, Parker)

Ideally, I’d find another $60k in order to upgrade a mid rookie to Miles. Downgrading Blakely to Zac Williams gives me these funds, however I’m bullish on Blakely this season. I also don’t believe Williams will do we enough to be a top 6 or even top 10 defender this year, so he will need to be traded out eventually. He will probably average around the 95 mark which, given the new lockout rules, will not be enough. Unless he reaches $550k at some point in the season, he won’t make enough cash to warrant the selection.

    6

    2
    1. Looks strong to me bAps!
I’d do the Blakely to Williams swap to get Miles (or Libba?).

There aren’t a whole heap of defenders who are locks to average above 100, so chances of Blakely being up there could be seen as slim, but if he did average 100-105 and you chose Williams instead then you’d only be giving up 10 points per game. Turning a mid rookie into Miles might conceivably gain you 20-30ppg…

Might cost you a trade if you felt you had to upgrade Williams later, but could by you points throughout the season…

  5. First attempt at making a squad. Can’t really se on anyone until I have a better idea about rookies, player roles and the JLT. Also Robbie Gray will probably turn into Dunkley but with Port losing Wingard I’m hoping he goes back into the midfield where we know he’s an elite scorer.

    DEF: J Lloyd, R Laird, J Sicily, Z Wiliams, S Collins, C Burgess, (H Wigg, M Hore)

    MID: P Cripps, C Oliver, J Kelly, D Martin, A Miles, L Stocker, C Constable, B Bewley, (L Valente, N Hind, L Foley)

    RUCK: Grundy, Naismith, (Fort)

    FWD: P Dangerfield, I Heeney, R Gray, C Wingard, W Setterfield, B Cavarra, (J Corbett, M Parker)

    3

    3
    1. Hey ATLfan, I hope Robbie goes back into the midfield too! As a Sydney fan, I hope Naismith has a good season but I don’t think he’s SC viable. He might make you 100K, but it’ll be slow and he probably won’t post more than about 75 ppg.

Darcy Fort sounds like he’s going well at the Cats, so if he gets the starting gig you could put him on field and stick another rook at R3. Left-field option, but it should work if Fort plays.

      3

      1
      1. Yeah that’s my exact plan. Reason for going for a midpricer like Naismith is that I see his marginal price rise impacting my team even more with a fall in price in Gawn. However, if Fort starts I’m gonna go with him as a starter instead

        2

        1
        1. Naismith sounds a long way off it.

If you don’t like Longer, which I can understand, then maybe look at English?

With Boyd out injured, Campbell and Roughead traded he might be a good interim placeholder as really the sole ruck at the doggies, unless you think Sweet is a Round 1 chance

  6. Happy New Year SCT & all the coaches that follow this amazing SC site. As usual I’ve done my research over the offseason & finally picked my 1st team.

    1. Catta,
How do you leave out zmerrit?
Surely with cover now he will have a better year than fyfe who will be beaten around?

      1

      3
      1. Bomber2018,

Fyfe is a beast, not many good enough to stop him when he’s fully fit …. he & Cripps were my first 2 picked!

I had Zac in a few times, my gut is saying the points will be shared around too much at Bomberland in the midfield ( Merrett, D Smith, Heppell, Shiel & Zahrakis )

Could still slip in before R1

        9

        1
        1. I think that right there is my fear with Fyfe, when he’s fully fit. He’s an beast of course but he’s never played a full 22, there’s a good chance you’ll need to plan at least 1 trade for him.

          5

          3
          1. Fyfe’s on my never again unless cheap list. It’s a miracle whenever he plays more than 15 games.

For all of the scoring potential, he usually costs 2 trades a year – one out and one back in.

Given I consistently struggle to keep trades up my sleeve he’s now officially only an upgrade target after the byes.

            3

            2
      2. Zerrett still not in full training, plus he has Devon Smith, Zaharakis, Hep D, and Dylan Shiel to compete with for possessions. As such, expectations of a return to his 120 scores in his lone hand season look extremely unlikely.

I only threw him back in because of the spare cash I had from the Blakely injury was not quite enough for a player I wanted.

I strongly doubt he will start the season for me.

  7. Hi All

Mids: Cripps, Oliver, Fyfe, Martin, Merrett, Miles, Bennell, Bewley. ( Stocker, Constable, Hind).

    Rucks: Grundy, Goldstein. (Fort).

  8. First attempt at a team this year, gonna be a few changes but just getting some thoughts.

    DEF – Lloyd – Laird – Whitfield – Blakely – Collins – Hore – Scrimshaw – Wigg

    MID – Fyfe – Neale – Coniglio – Brayshaw (Mel) – B.Smith – Setterfield – Constable – Valente – Stocker – Bewley – Hind

    RUCK – Grundy – Longer – Fort

    FWD – Danger – D.Smith – Heeney – Wingard – Rankine – Corbett – Parker – Cavarra

Obviously rookies will change, I’m worried 4 premiums in mid isn’t enough. What do ppl think?

    2

    1
    1. Depending on what rookies show up, you could afford lose one of Laird/Whitfield (same bye) and add a Cripps-type in the MIDs if you can scramble the extra cash from somewhere.
I reckon it’s ballsy but looks good 🙂

      2

      2
      1. Along with Kelly, Cogs and Whitfield need to be the engine room at the Giants with Smith, Shiel, Scully etc all gone.

Look also to Taranto, Hately and a few of the younger mob to get some big midfield time and points.

The Giants are a team to watch this year from a Supercoach perspective.

  9. Hey Guys,
First time I have done SC in a number of years. Here is what I have so far:

Defenders: Laird, Witherden, Z. Williams, Francis, Williamson, Scrimshaw (Wilkie, Wigg)

Mids: Dangerfield, Cripps, Kelly, D.Smith, Libba, Horlin-Smith, Setterfield, Constable (Bewley, Valente, Hind)

Hoping to get some feedback on what people reckon.
    Cheers
    Rucks: Gawn, Kruez (Fort)

Forwards: Dunkley, Wingard, De Goey, Gresham, Greene, Rankine (N.Blakey, Cavarra)

    2

    4
    1. There’s a lot of potential in this team but you will struggle to see all of it. It will be a long season unless you select at minimum 10 bona-fide keepers but aim for 12-13. Unless your playing a high risk high reward strategy. And if you are where’s zorko and worpal.

      1

      1
    2. Michael, I think you need to move Danger to the forward line. Lose DeGoey, with Beams arrival I think his midfield time will be limited. Might want to look at swapping Francis for Roberton and that might leave enough cash for Macrae or Oliver in the mids. Kreuzer is a high risk strategy that just might pay off if he stays on the park. Good luck.

      3

      0
    3. Kreuz injured knee. Out.
Francis. Frankly not worth it. Out.

If you’re determined to pick midpricers rather than a premium and a Rookie (eg Connor Rozee and Stef Martin, or Hurn/Crisp and Longer), then Lycett, English, Longer or Vardy are obvious cheaper replacements for the ruck, and Roberton, Houli, Newman and Pittard are obvious midpricers for the backline.

Danger, Smith and Setterfield should in theory be in your forward line. You can probably keep one of them (Danger) in your midfield for the swing option, and lets be honest the rookie is a cash cow so structurally not too significant where he is, as there are plenty of interesting rookie forwards as well as midfielders, but Smith will not score enough to tie up a midfield place.

Ditch Gresham and Greene (injured). Move Smith Foward for Gresham, and buy Dahlhaus to replace Greene. Sam Walsh for Smith in the midfield.

Try that and see how it looks. Because at present you have at best 10 or 11 keepers, and trying to make around 12-14 upgrades in a season is practically impossible.

  10. Had a play around with my team. All depends on JLT but happy with it so far. Still uncomfortable not having Pendlebury in my side since he started! Just can’t see him hit the heights of previous years.

    Mids:

    Bench: Constable, Hill, Woodcock

    1. Looks good. Am presuming Whitnall is actually Whitfield.
MIDs and RUCs v solid, but I’d keep an eye on McLean. I know he got the mid-time last year until he did his shoulder. Think Dunkley may just have made the role his own with Uber-impressive performances on the run-home which also coincided with significant upturn in Doggies results and competitiveness. Think Mr Magnets would be mad not to give Dunkley first dibs in 2019.

  11. Hey guys,
First time posting, so go easy. Rucks are very thin I know, hoping one of Joe or TBC doesn’t make it onto the park for the first half of the season.

    DEF: J Sicily, L Whitfield, A Witherden, D Roberton, C Wilkie, M Hore, (J Scrimshaw, H Wigg)

    MID: P Cripps, J Kelly, L Neale, D Martin, Z Merrett, A Miles, L Stocker, B Bewley (C Constable, J Atley, N Hind)

    RUC: B Grundy, Z Clark (J Sweet)

    FOR: P Dangerfield, D Smith, I Heeney, R Gray, W Setterfield, M Parker (C Burgess, B Cavarra)

I know I’m pretty light on for the R12 bye, but this is just the first cut, so not too fussed about that at this stage. I’m looking at this as 13 confirmed keepers (including Witherden here), with the hope that Roberton could be keeper number 14… let me know if I’m dreaming!

    1. Good start Tommy,
Maybe a little heavy on premos in R12, but plenty of time to trade a couple in to cover.

I’d be looking at candidate replacements for Hore and Scrimshaw – can’t see either playing R1.
Maybe Duursma, he has DPP, 19K cheaper than Scrimshaw and more likely to get a game IMO.

    2. Good start Tommy. You are right about the rucks. If I was to not have a set and forget R2 then I would look towards a cheaper option like a longer and bank the cash. Good luck.

      1. Sorry, ignore that last comment about cash, I didn’t realize that Clarke was so cheap. Still I prefer Longer a a cheap R2 option as he is almost certain to get a game.

    1. Hey Shaun, the world famous SCT Draft League is usually run by site regular Bearded Burbler. First choice goes to last year’s entrants, but there’s usually a couple of spots free, so keep an eye out on this site for an announcement over the next few weeks.

  12. Hi Guys, Hope this year we’ll crack some ceilings. Well done Schwarzwalder and team, appreciate the hard work you have put in year in year out. I love this community.

    Here we go:

    Def:
Lloyd, Whitfield, Witerden, Collins, Wilkie, McKay (Hore, Wigg)

    Mid:
Cripps, Fyfe, Martin, Yeo, A.Hall, Miles, Stocker, Constable (Butters, Hind, McHenry)

    Ruck:
    Grundy, Naismith ( Z. Clarke)

    FWD:
Dangerfield, Heeney, Smith, Setterfield, Rozee, McAdam (Burgess, Cavarra)

    $402k in the bank.

May change Ruck or rookies depending on JLT.
This year I decided to follow the byes and rookies rules for my structure.
-No Gawn bcoz of price and also rucks dont score well two years in the row and Melb got another ruck to share game time?
-No Zerrett because the points can be shared in the bombers mid,
-No Macrae bcoz he is just too expensive so a transfer target.
-No Kelly bcoz of big losses in mid and Coniglio/Taranto may take points off him.
-Hall over Liba becoz of bye structure and ceiling. May change after JLT
-No Greene and Sicily bcoz no stupid risks this year . I Rather lose 30-50 points a round and have a good night sleep than lose a rage trade or get a doughnut. (An old African proverb says that Zebra dont change their stripes ). .
-Laird may come in for Witherden if JLT are good.
A part from that I am happy with my first team/premios and As Father Dougal says they are “the keepers” and will make way for smooking rookies only except for disastrous JLT.

But what do you think? Please criticize.

    1. Hey Jeannot, welcome back for 2019! My opinion is that 400K is too much to have sitting in the bank doing nothing, so I’d use some of it to upgrade either Hall or Naismith.
Otherwise, looking good! All the best this year

        1. Hey Jeanott
I currently have Hall in my team
Like to take a few risks . will give kangas some run and average prior to 2018 was solid.
Agree 400 k too much on bench

          1. All reports have Hall doing very nicely at the Roos. He’s always had the talent, so getting him out of the Gold Coast will give him the opportunity.

He’s a death or glory shot this year, if he doesn’t perform this year, he goes on my Higgins list. But I rate him highly for 2019

  13. Words of caution 1 premo ruck selections.
I started with Maxie and Nic Nat last year and finished with Maxie and Martin.
I was always worried about duel ruck work (always worried about Coxie butting in) and we know it never happened.
Then with sudden injuries i couldn’t finally afford Grundy.
My advice is to watch JLT closely and note TOG when assessing ruck plans.
Don’t get “Coxie” disease when thinking Maxie.
Melbourne have KPP forward plans too.
Don’t let the byes poison your logic too early in the season.
Don’t get sucked in by big scores in JLT (all positions), check TOG and who’s missing…….Remember WC scores last year?
………AND DON’T PANIC!!!……I was 80th after round 1, dropped to 100 and something by round 3, panicked and made trades.
Sorry if I’ve rambled on, but hopefully this might help the 1st timers. Cheers Everyone

    2. Thanks mate. I had Maxie in and out of the team all week, Hence the large cash in the bank. I should reconsider the one premio ruck…( I started Fyfe and Danger last year and wasted trades). Maybe I am being too cautious.

  14. So iv made a couple changes and im fairly happy, but i have s couple of concerns that i wanna get some feedback on.

1 – is my ruck setup too risky? is anyone else running with Grundy,Longer and Fort? but i went with this to free up cash so i can have all the premos i want and all the higher priced rookies. but is it worth it?
2 – how many Gold Coast players is too many? i currently have 4 (Collins,Burgess,Miles and Corbet) i understand rookies are subject to change, but still just curious on what you all think.
3 – i think iv got a real addiction with supercoach and this site. i cant seem to go 24 hours without changing my team and scrolling through the comments.

    1. Many people seem to be lining up with the same ruck lineup as you are. Personally i couldn’t bring myself to start someone like Longer at R2 as i simply don’t think he makes enough cash to go all the way up to someone like Gawn and i believe it will leave you trying to make up ground. However i could be wrong and its best to trust your own instincts and make a judgement after seeing JLT.

The gold coast players shouldn’t be an issue as they are 3 rookies and miles who are all there to make cash and eventually be traded. Obviously more rookies will be seen in JLT allowing you to possibly swap one of the suns rooks anyway.

And finally i may have the addiction too!

      4

      0
      1. But if it fails you have put yourself in a position where you will be struggling to make up the ground on those that started a premium R2 and the difference between that may be enough to ruin your season.

Also curious to know why you think Grundy, Longer, Fort will be the #1 ruck combination since Gawn, Westhoff, Goldy, Mumford, Martin and Naismith all have a higher ownership % than Longer?

        0

        0
        1. How will those who went with the Grawndy combo (or any combo of Grundy/Gawn/Stef/Sinclair/Naismith/Preuss/Cameron/Vardy/Hickey/Roughead/Stanley/Abbott go in Round 13 when they have no Grundy, Sidebottom, Beams, Pendles, Treloar, Taylor, Crisp, Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw, McDonald, Danger, Selwood, Ablett, Menegola, Kelly, Duncan, Lloyd, Kennedy, Parker, Heeney, Mills, Buddy, Neale, Zorko, Witherden, Gaff, Yeo, Redden, Hurn , McGovern etc?

It’s a fairly hefty chunk of players out of 5 almost certain finals sides and a 6th that is massively improving.

That round 13 bye is a killer – 5 of the top 7 midfielders by points scored last year, All of the top 3 rucks, the top forward and top back all out at once.

You can either plan for it, or just throw your hands up in frustration and write off round 13. I may yet decide to do just that, and hope to be in with a good chance of winning a cash prize in Round 12 or 14 instead.

Most people don’t start planning for the bye rounds at this stage, they just throw in the players they think are cheap or recognize the names of as being guns. I’m currently on the 4th draft of my team, and only the first 2 have been through the bye planner yet.

Down the track, they start planning for the byes, and they start realizing they can’t have 50% or more of the cash value of their side out on the one week . Hell, just 3 players Danger Gawn and Grundy is over 20%, add in a Lloyd and a Heeney and an Oliver and that’s about 40% of your budget in 6 spots.

People can jump onboard the Hoff, but it’s only a BARELY sensible plan, if you have him in the forward line, with a swing donut like Patrick Bines (with similar levels of ownership). Ownership percentages don’t tell you WHERE a player is on the field, so a lot of people will have taken Hoff as a forward, given he’s the #2 ranked forward for points last year and #3 by average. Hoff’s 32 years old and has never averaged 100 before. You don’t “break out” at 32. He’s sure to shed almost 20 points per game this year, so he’s at least equally as bad a move as Longer as far as losing points, except Longer will go up $150k, and Hoff will shed at least $100k. Of those two options I know which one I prefer, especially at half the price.

A slightly more sensible reason for taking the Hof/Bines combo is taking him as a R2 and then shifting him to Forward and picking up Mummy if Mummy shows form at around Round 5 or 6. That would allow you to drop an injured or underperforming player, and let you suss out Mumford, who misses the first 3 rounds, AND is coming back from not playing AND a pre Christmas hamstring injury, and formerly retired due to other injuries.

Naismith still isn’t even training properly yet, and has only played 22 games IN 6 years, without even averaging 70. Even as a Swans fan, that’s an incredibly ballsy or incredibly stupid move.

In the end, I’m not worried about Joe Average who throws a team together full off big names and discounted players and no hopers, which is what the “ownership percentage” represents, it’s the 5% of players on websites like this who think and analyse teams and plan ahead. They’re the REAL competition, and if you look here at “Rate my team” threads the most common ruck lineup seems to be a Grundy/Longer/Fort one, backed up closely by a Grundy/Goldy/Bines.

So yeah, a Grundy/Longer/Fort lineup may not be the most common one in all Supercoach teams, but it seems to be the most common one here, where the serious players are, and that’s what really matters.

          1

          0
          1. Agree with what youve said in no way would i ever consider the likes of Mumford, Hoff and Naismith.

With the byes yes Gawn and Grundy means both rucks are out of action for the round 13 bye (along with all the other premiums you mention). However as long as you find a way to have 18 players fielded then it doesn’t matter if both rucks are out. Planning is key early to ensure you don’t have too many Rd 13 players.

If you did plan to just right off round 13 then you have to be confident that you will be able to make up or even come out on top from the loss in round 13 in other rounds where the likes of Gawn will leave others behind.

            1

            0
            1. True, if your goal is the 50k.

If your goal is an overall round prize you get 21 chances at it, with 2 particularly good chances in Round 12 and 14.

              horses for courses I guess.

          2. Everyone’s in the same boat. So don’t stress over it. But you will find that if you build a value pick team you can dodge it a bit. Sloan, crouch, merritt, dusty, williams, green, newman, bennell, libba, hanners, wingard rocky, roberton etc. Obviously not all these guys together but most of them are better than fielding rookies. Dusty, sloan, crouch merritt could be huge for this round as cheap picks plus there all keepers anyway.

    1. Mick, a good start. Bit different to other teams I have seen. A question for you……IYO will Higgins score more points than Libba? If yes then stay as you are but if no, or the same, then I would move Heeney to the forwards and Libba in the middle plus cash. Viney is definitely a pod. Cheers and good luck..M.

      1. Mick.

I agree with Maximus, Re Higgins and Heeney.

I would review you structure starting back.

3 top dollar defenders really stretches your Mid / Forward budget. I would consider Laird or Sicily ( I really rate Whitfield this year ) down to a Williams / Blakey / Witherden type.

This should free up enough cash to turn Higgins into Heeney and then get a better M4 . Maybe a Dusty / M Crouch / Beams.

I really think you need to start 4 Mid Premos at the least.

Midfield ( and the ruck) is where most of your points are scored.

        Happy planning.

    1. I like this side better.

I would still look at downgrading Hanners (Too likely to get injured before he makes cash) to another mid rookie like Stocker or Atley.

This would also allow you to turn one of Bont , Shiel or Beams into an uber premo ( Captain option ) like Fyfe, Oliver or J Kelly.

You could also use it to upgrade Witts to a Goldie / Stef Martin.
They will reliably out score Witts by 10/20 points for less than $100k more.

      Happy planning. 🙂

      1. Hanners is pretty tough. Injured before making cash? Doubt it.

The questions on Hanners are quite simply does he have the motivation and is he cooked? It’s only a couple of years ago he was in top 10 midfield territory and he is still young.

Quite frankly, I think most of it was mental and he didn’t want to be at the swans anymore, and with the influx of rookies like Heeney, Mills and Blakely he started seeing he had better opportunities elsewhere.

        2

        1. HH

I have to disagree. I run a cafe in Bondi and often serve Swans players including Hanners last year.

Yes Hanners is tough. Maybe too tough. I think he allowed himself to play injured too many times. re injuring and complicating his situation.

I too remember his glory days. He was a fearless bash and crash player and deserving All Australian. He averaged 113.4 in 2016 and was absolute champion. Since then though Its been a downward spiral. He just hasn’t been able to get his body right.

From what I could gather. Hanners ( late 2018 ) although going through a break up with his girlfriend, was quite happy to ( start with at least )to stay at the Swans. The Swans however weren’t willing to extend his big dollar contract due to his physical condition. The Swans also had to be very careful with the Salary cap as they were loosing the extra cap space. Although still young his body seems battered,He just seems to sustain one soft tissue injury after another.

Maybe the Saints medical staff can get him right, but I would n’t bet on it.

I’m afraid he will try to play even if he’s not %100 fit and start a whole new round of reoccurring injuries.

I know he’s a crazy low price for his potential. I just feel the chances of him actually playing enough unhindered are pretty slim.

I do hope he finds some level of fitness and can contribute to St Kilda’s season. I still won’t be starting him in my SC team this season.

    1. Hey Clair.

I like your overall structure.( as in, where you have chosen to spend your money. I think its a very risky move having so many midpriced / breakout players.

Players like Berry, Fisher, Langford, Steele,Blakey and Mills haven’t really proven themselves yet. It would be a miracle if they all turned into premium keepers in the same year. Miles is more a stepping stone player ,and should make money at his price so I feel is pretty good value.

I would be trying to limit the above list to 3 or 4 at the most. Even less if enough good rookies show up round one.Without enough good rookies in your side you will never make enough cash to grow your side into a fully premium unit.

To do this I would maybe look at downgrading a few to rookies and upgrading a few of the others to proven premiums.

      Hope that helps somewhat.

      Thanks for posting.

    2. Have to agree with FT. Maybe two of Steele, Taranto and Berry to a genuine premo and a decent rookie who is gonna play. And maybe two of Langford, Fisher and Rankine to another elite and cheaper premo.
That’ll help you focus on which one is the best to keep of the three on each line, plus give a you another proven premium AND a genuine money-maker (rookie).
Good luck. I also like the idea/structure..

I feel you may have spent up a bit big in defence.

If you drop 2 of Lloyd, Laird, Whitfield and Sicily down to a couple of value guys like Blakey,Williams, Witherden. Mills, you will still have a solid back line and it will also free up cash to improve your mid and forward lines.

You could turn B Smith into Miles, and turn either Wingard or Dunkley into the safer Heeney.

There should also be a little extra left over to allow you to get in the best available Cows for round one.

    Happy planning.

    1. thanks mate! Just gone dunkley to heeney and sicily to blakely already. 100% agree that I need a little bit left over so that I can make any rookie swaps required if I miss the boat on any before price rises etc. Thanks for the feedback and good luck this season!

      1. No worries mate.

Sicily is probably the right call. I really want Sicily at some point this year. I just feel he is most likely of that bunch to put up a couple of below par scores. This should drop his price closer to,or even below $500k. Thats when I will pounce.

        Good luck to you too.

        2

        0
        1. Lloyd has a habit of dropping a couple of poor scores, getting down sub 500k and going bang and launching to the stratosphere to be unaffordable until the end of the season.

If you feel brave, you might be able to bank on that. Good luck, and don’t hesitate once he knocks out a big one, because history shows he goes bang and keeps going.

He’ll also be a big winner of the kick in rule changes, so those “poor” 80 point games will probably be close to the ton now.

Sicily fails the no dickheads rule. He claimed during the offseason he has changed his ways but he misses far too many games for my liking.

Laird worries me this season. He was off the boil for most of the season, and Brodie Smith back and the progression of Milera could see him not returning to his previous highs. He’s one I feel cautious enough about already, but with him sharing the same bye as Whitfield who will have to be back in the guts at GWS and Zac Williams being heavily discounted yet on fire in the finals, I have got Laird as an after the bye upgrade at best.

Your midfield also has a bit of risk in Kelly and Fyfe. Both brilliant when available, Kelly if over his issues should be a lock this year. If he is, I’ll be onboard.

    1. Getting close.

I think you are still a little thin in defence.

I would look at Shiel or Miles down to a Stocker / Atley type. ( Walsh at D8 is batting very deep in the mids.)

That should turn Roberton into a better D3.

    1. Shiel is a great player but not a great SC scorer. Never averaged a ton for a season yet. Miles is 120k cheaper and should score similar to Shiel. Good luck this year, M.

Liking Cogs as a POD. With so many MIDs gone from GWS I can only see improvement yr-on-yr. Massive ceiling too. Hall could also be a great pick.
Still not sold on Libba tho … would take Hanners over him, but I won’t be starting him either!
Only other point would be, can you not squeeze another Swan in (eg Parker)? 😉

      1. Just shy of Parker, but wanted him in… if Matthew Parker or a similar rookie steps in at round 1 for Mitch Lewis, or if Harrison Wigg is finally ready, I may well be able to afford Parker for Zerrett, who I do not expect any great climb from with the extra midfield options at Essendon.

        1. Noticeable improvements Sounds a lot better. Collins, Scrimshaw, Hore and Wigg is a lot of rookies so they won’t all be there for round 1, but you would expect at least 3 will be there and change the last one for fresh meat.

  29. Could someone acquire the kickout numbers of Luke Ryan last year? Blakely out and I’m looking at Ryan in but only if he is going to be benefiting from the new rules otherwise I will find some cash and upgrade to a Lloyd or Laird. Do think in his 3rd year Ryan might be pushing triple figures and certainly with this rule – just can’t find the data.

    1. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-08-22/kings-of-the-kickin

L Ryan took 107 of Fremantle’s 261 kick ins from R1-22 with 74/107 being short effective kicks. Fremantle only played on 21 times in 2018 with Wilson playing on 17 times so I assume Ryan played on 4 times which would give him a play on percentage of 3.74%.

Averages 17.32 disposals across his current 31 game career:
      SC avg when disposals equal/exceed 18: 110.38 from 13
Sc avg when disposals below 18: 67.5 from 18

      SC Avg when disposals equal/exceed 15: 100.35 from 20
Sc Avg when disposals below 15: 58.45 from 11

Large room for improvement and is currently in my side.

      1. Is that correct?! Equals or excedes 18 disposals gets 110? Not doubting you,
he’s been in my team for a while now on the back of the kick in rule. But was the first on my cutting list if I needed funds etc. Hmmm, might have another lock.

      2. nice work as ever Adam. Have brought him in for the injured Blakely. I might also re-think Cerra as a mid-price FWD. He was already mooted for more mid-time and with Blakely now gone, might see his average increase 20-25pts rather than the 15-20 I was initially thinking.

    1. Looks great and whilst I’ve put together a decent case for Longer in past threads, I think it’s worth sacrificing a midfielder to start Gawn. He’s gotta be 90% likely to average 120+ again. Longer will likely have more than the odd stinker which is crap for $ generation.
I see that there’s a lot of understandable love for Mr Consistency, Lachie Neale, but I feel moving clubs in the off-season presents an unnecessary risk to take. Add to that he was nearly $100k cheaper come Rd6 last year after a slow start ($25k cheaper the year before), it might be a safer move. It also gives you more upgrade options in your midfield. Your SC engine room.
You can shoot me if you make the change and I’m wrong. If you’re not gonna start Gawn, then at least look at Goldie, proven, in great nick and came home like a steam-train last year after overcoming personal and niggling issues.
      Good luck whatever you decide.

      4

      2
      1. Yea I’m a bit hesitant about longer as a saints supporter I think it’s more hope than anything that he goes well now he will be pretty much flying solo. If I lose all hope then I agree downgrading a mid to be able to upgrade him is the way to go

        2. Agree with AS. Gawn or Goldy is a must. Might want to consider Bennell in the mids if he stays fit. Frees up a lot of cash to get your rucks right. Good luck…M.

          2

          2
          1. Goldy definitely deserves consideration, if no other reason for the bye structure issue and the lack of “second ruckman” threat, which we talk up a lot with Gawn/Preuss but we don’t seem to mention the Grundy/Cox/Roughead triumvirate.

Goldy started the season poorly, but from Round 9 onwards only dipped below 100 twice, although that did include a shocker against the Lions.

That 6 week patch at the start of the year when he didn’t even manage a 90 certainly helped bring his price down a long way too.

    1. Looks good but Blakely (FRE) will be out for a few months at least (same hamstring tear as Treloar last year, albeit one rather than both!).

Just feel you have WAY too many mid-pricers and premium-priced rookies.

If this were my team I’d be ditching Blakely, Scrimshaw, Rozee, Walsh, Bennell, Hipwood and Lukosius and pick two uber premos. You’d then have five players to pick, by all means pick one or two of your original list (whoever you are REALLY confident in) and then fill the rest with base-priced rookies. You should have enough $$s to do that. And it should save you a heap of trades.

Sloane could be a decent POD. Rarely seen him in this thread.

Of course it is your team, so good luck whatever you decide 😉

      1. Yep. That’s why I won’t be starting Witherden or Neale. Unlikely to be top 2 or 3 by position. The rest are highly likely to be just that. 6 premos on any single Bye has to your max. you’d think. That only leaves 7 genuine premos across the other two byes and the field.
Of course Neale is likely gonna end up a top8 MID but for me, he has to be an upgrade target because those six (by position) I feel are critical if you want a fair dinkum dash at the overall.
Some may feel Neale’s ahead of Oliver and that’s a fair call. Just a difference of opinion. For me, Oliver had a year of consolidation last year. Not a significant increase in average, but played in pain on a number of occasions. I wouldn’t be surprised if he does a Macrae in 2019. Neale on the other hand is at a new club (breeds uncertainty for mine) and while he has a huge ceiling, might just take a while to find his feet … Fallen Premium territory 🙂

        1. Was thinking of moving oliver on for mcrouch anyway. Think he’s really undervalued for what he can do. Lloyd only came in today with the blakely news. I think he could be overpriced. So him for sicily could be on the cards too

And i reckon with rookie upgrades etc i should hopefully be able to find enough players.

          1
        1. Yeah the byes are exceedingly unkind to us. It was another reason for the reduction in Grundy/Gawn ruck combos.

But I guess, if you can get 18 on the park it doesn’t really matter where they are.

  35. Any review would be much appreciated, recent change was to drop miles to a rookie – then switching mills/williams to llyod/sicily.
I don’t really want to start llyod, but the more i think about this new play on rule and the fact they have more space to do so, surely the best long kickers in each backline will hit up someone outside 50 and get a rebound 50 every time? And llyod and sicily are both excellent long kicks.

      1. Appreciate the feedback!
Will be watching JLT closely to see how Naismith goes. I just feel there is value there. Probably scrap the team and start before round 1.
Being a Richmond supporter, I just don’t think they are a friendly SC team. Dusty will go big in games and it will cost me but have gone with Yeo for the time being for some more consistency. Got a gut feeling he is only going to improve.

        1

        0
        1. Dusty seemed also to be getting caught more last year and not able to maintain his famous fend off. Change of interpretation from the umpires? Less favouritism from umpires? Players sussing him out? Injury?

He’s a player I would be approaching with caution, even though he can jump out of the starting blocks.

All I know is 2018 Dusty was not 2017 Dusty, either from an impact on game or supercoach perspective.

    1. I’d keep one (likely Williams) and get yourself another premo using Roberton to Collins.
Am looking at something similar at the other end. Just depends how and where the rookies fall come Rd1, but it doesn’t just to prepare for every eventuality.
      Good luck 😉

    2. Honestly, everyone just has to wait till the jlt to see how new rules effect scoring. If all kick out exponents get a score boost you will have to start them maby 5 deep even.
If their expected extra points take them above their starting price they may not drop in price much at all and you will find it too hard catching up to people who did.
That being said the kpp forwards may get a boost from easier contested marks and more goals. Entirely feasible to end up going all kink in kings, all kpp forwards and fallen premium mids.
But then again perhaps nothing will change.

This is all speculative lol, don’t drag me over the coals for wondering.

    1. I like the backline, I am very big on investing in it this year with the new kick in rules and think Roberton depending on JLT is a great pick. I personally rate Sicily/Kade/Laird/Lloyd ahead of Whitfield though.

That said I feel like for me the midfield is too light and mid-pricer heavy. I do like Miles but personally not keen on Andrew Brayshaw (or either really) or GHS. I’d maybe think about turning Brayshaw, GHS, Walsh into cheap rookies and another premo like Cripps, maybe even downgrade Worpel too and have a couple more proven players.

      1. Agree totally. Personally, I would upgrade one of Ryan, Witherdon, Williams to Laird as he is the most consistent defender. He and Whitfield would be my defense foundation. Must have Cripps or Macrae an$ to do this probably means downgrading Worpel and GHS and upgrading a Brayshaw. Good luck this year…M.

        1. One thing I think everyone should consider with Laird is Brodie Smith’s impact.

Look, I’d love to have Laird too, but with Zac Williams hevvily discounted and a likely move of Whitfield back into the midfield that is two premos with the same bye already.
