  1. Back with a few changes, let me know what you guys think!

    DEF: S. Docherty, H. Shaw, R. Laird, C. Hampton, E. Vickers-Willis, L. Ryan (T. Stewart, Z. Guthrie)

    MID: P. Dangerfield, S. Pendlebury, D. Hannebery, A. Treloar, D. Zorko, N. Fyfe, J. O’Meara, D. Swallow (S. Powell-Pepper, J. Atley, B. Jarman)

    RUCK: M. Gawn, A. Sandilands (L. Strnadica)

    FWD: L. Dahlhaus, J. Roughead, T. Nankervanis, J. Bowes, O. Florent, J. Pickett (C. Maynard, B. Eddy)

I know my forward line is on the weak side but I’m not sold on any of the premos except Dahlhaus, and any of the potential breakout options (Wingard, Petracca, Steele etc.) will be cheap enough to trade up to when their bye comes around if they explode.

As always, any advice/criticism is more than welcome ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Looks like a pretty solid team. Only concern for me would be having too many risky options which could backfire.

    2. Great selections of Docherty, Shaw, Hannebery and Zorko but rookie selections are worrying. Maynard and Jarman are a massive longshot at being selected this year, Guthrie and Ryan are currently injured and J Atley’s job security is very low. An alternative could be to drop Zorko to Beams allowing Maynard, Jarman, Ryan and Guthrie to be changed to R Schoenmakers, J Barrett, N Newman and M Hibberd. Other than that I love your midfield structure as O’Meara and Swallow should be cashed out around RD9 for a Selwood/Rockliff/Ablett therefore finishing your midfield.

      1. While I agree with your points, could I get a source on where you heard Luke Ryan and Zac Guthrie are injured? Cos this is news to me!

        1. Sorry I meant to say Guthrie wasn’t playing this weekend as his brother (C Guthrie) is the one with the slight injury problem. Cannot find a source on Ryan but is yet to play a pre-season game, doesn’t look likely to play till maybe mid-season and from memory is still battling injury problems.

        2. Ryan ain’t playing, keeps injuring himself at match simulations and not getting full runs. Not getting any publicity because, well, hasn’t really played to get his name mentioned in the first place.

Z.Guthrie has apparently hyper extended his knee, hence not being named in this weeks JLT game, but not sure about it. Might be management given he has the body of a 14 year old and was running out of steam last match. Could also be to dim the lights on publicity as if he had a blinder it would push the media to say upgrade him.

    1. An option could be to take out Grundy for Sandilands freeing up 220,000 to bring in Hampton for L Ryan and maybe Nankervis for W Hoskin-Elliot.

    1. Very light-on in the FWD line. You might need a bit of luck at the selection table before Rd1. But if you’re confident with it, then it could prove a genius move!

      1

      0
      1. Thanks Schwarzwalder. WHE, McCarthy, Turner and Taranto all instilled a lot of faith in my strategy with all scoring 75+ this weekend and cementing their respective spots for RD1. The reasoning behind going weak is I see approximately 15-20 legitimate options that could push for a top 6-10 in the fwd line thus allowing me to gauge the best options.

        2

  4. Complete re-do of the team, looking at minimising some of the risks that I had in there before.

    DEF: H. Shaw, R. Laird, Z. Tuohy, C. Hampton, A. Otten, T. Stewart (Z. Guthrie, E. V-W)

    MID: P. Dangerfield, S. Pendlebury, JPK, L. Neale, Bont, N. Fyfe, D. Swallow, S. Powell-Pepper (J. Barrett, H. Wigg, M. Hibberd)

    RUCK: B. Grundy, A. Sandilands (L. Strnadica)

    FWD: L. Dahlhaus, L. Franklin, J. Roughead, T. Nankervis, O. Florent, A. Black (J. Begley, B. Eddy)

Had some concerns about Neale playing with Fyfe, not as much after last night now. Witts is tempting as well but a fair bit of risk there.

    1

    2
    1. Looks good Postie. Just one warning – don’t put too much weight into last night’s game, because the Blues are not providing much opposition at the moment.
Out of interest, are you picking Nankervis as a keeper, or planning to trade him?
      Good luck this year!

      1. Thanks for the reply Chillo.

For me, I’m thinking the best case for Nankervis is F6 and Ruck cover at the end of the year. At least with Hampson’s LTI he’s a good chance at solo rucking for a fair while.

Agree on the Neale point, might have jumped the gun a little there, there’s still $59k in the kitty so plenty of room to move on that one, Hanners was sitting in there yesterday.

Best of luck to you also.

        1

    2. You’ve ‘minimised risk’ yet you’ve still got Tuohy, Neale, Swallow, Sandi, Buddy, Roughy and Nank? Scary to think of what your team was before haha.

    1. What’s the point in having so much left in the warchest? You’re supposed to pick the BEST team possible with the 10mil you’re given, spend it all. There shouldn’t be a need for corrective trades if you’ve done your research! The only ‘corrective’ trades should be between rookies, which should cost next to nothing anyway (117k player to a 123k player, or vice versa).
Any large amount of cash you have left over come round 1 is just wasted points.

      2

      6
      1. This year a corrective trade could be your 123k rookie needs to be upgraded to someone like WHE who is 100k more expensive, just because rookies are looking like slim pickings in some lines.

There is merit, some people pick more expensive rookies prior to Rd1 so they can downgrade them and leave their premiums untouched as opposed to having to ruin a structure they are happy with just to fit more expensive players if cheap ones aren’t named Rd1.

  8. This is how my team is looking at the moment:

Def: Docherty, Simpson, Shaw, Hampton, Hibberd, Stewart (Otten, Ryan)

I am pretty content with how it is looking but any thoughts would be appreciated on how to make it more elite??

    Thanks!

    1. Very nice set up. 13 keepers, 2 mid pricers.

I like the couple of POD in the mids and you haven’t spared any change on going for the most expensive backs. Kudos, haven’t seen many with those top 3.

Some of those rookies won’t like up Rd1 so make sure you have some spare coin to adjust without ruining your structure,

    1. I reckon you’ve got a good team there but perhaps not as strong in the mid field as some sides going around. You’ll need a little bit of cash to cover rookies not getting a run in round 1 but 78k is overdoing it. I’d spend most of it on improving your mids.

      0

      1
          1. No way would you upgrade Trealor to Pendlebury at this stage. Trealor is flying will take his game to another level. Scott might be his dependable self but already couple little niggles is not what you want. He won’t outscore Trealor this season that upgrade does nothing.

64k left! have plenty to spend

    1

    3
    1. Interesting spend in the forward line made possible by not selecting Big Max Gawn. Jack Billings has done a full pre season for the first time and has been killing it in the practice matches. It appears he’s being groomed for Montagna’s role but I reckon Joey will be the plus one again this season. As a Saints man I’d love to think he’ll break out this year but I think Billings will most likely play half forward with a bit of time on a wing once the season gets underway. He’s going to be very, very good eventually.

      2

      1
      1. Is my team rubbish? Should I go for Grundy? Or do I go for old faithful Gawn? I will fix my defence, 3 Adelaide players is bad!

  13. Due to the Gawn/Spencer ordeal, I’ve switched up and gone with #Nankilands. Lets me go super deep in the mids (Fyfe at M7!!). Rookies subject to change, obviously.
    $57,200 remaining.

DEF: Laird, Howe, Hampton, EVW, Newman, Ryan (Stewart, Guthrie)

MID: Danger, Pendles, JPK, Hanners, Jelwood, Treloar, Fyfe, SPP (Barrett, Wigg, Hibberd)

    RUC: Nank, Sandi (Preuss)

FWD: NRoo, Dahl, Lynch [GC], Roughy, Bowes, Black (Pickett, Eddy)

Laird and Howe are the only defenders I’m happy starting with this year, everyone else is either overpriced or not a top6 lock. It also happens that the defensive line is where all the decent rookies are this year, so that works out well for me.

    3

    7
    1. I am not really sure how true that is, you would more than likely say that about the forwards then the backs:

      Docherty AVE: 108
      Simpson AVE: 106
      Shaw AVE: 105
      Boyd AVE: 103
      Rance AVE: 98
      Laird AVE: 96

      Fowards:
      Riewoldt: Ave 101
      JJ Ave: 98
      Dahlhaus Ave 95
      Deledio Ave 95

      3

      1
      1. Docherty has had ONE good season, I’m not about to drop close to $600k (top10 midfielder money) on him.
Simmo’s 2016 was a standout year, the past like 6 seasons he averaged in the 90’s and will likely go back to scoring that, hence currently overpriced.
Shaw’s output will decrease with William’s emergence (he averaged something like 88 after his bye last year from memory).
Boyd is too old for my liking, and with returning Dogs defenders his output will likely drop.
Rance is a KPP, and can be picked up plenty cheaper once he’s had a couple quiet games in a row.

I’m backing Roo to have a massive year, in his final season. A better Saints outfit, he’ll be free to roam the ground as he pleases.
JJK’s output will improve this season, with SMitch joining the Eagles midfield.
Deledio is made of glass and not sure where he’ll fit in to the Giants side, he’s not really relevant this season.

        3

        1
        1. I don’t think 2016 was an outlyimg year for Simmo, more a result of a new game plan. I will be surprised if he or Doc average much under 100.

  14. I have looked at many of these teams, however one player seems to not rate this year M Boyd, am I missing something

    1. I think Baps summed it up well above. Age factor and players returning from injury could lower his output. I’d look at him as a possible upgrade target if/when he drops in price.

    1. Mills, Gaff & Higgins are the ones that stick out. Gaff gets plenty of the ball but still hasn’t averaged more than 105 from average. With Mitchell coming in, not sure he’ll jump over that this year either.
Would only take one of Mills or Higgins at most. Higgo bound to get more midfield time this year but how long will the body hold up? Will Mills’ avg jump so high to elevate him into the Top10 DEFs? Maybe in another year or two?

    1. Pretty bad to be honest. Danger and Priddis are good picks. Viney and Barlow don’t bother with. Beams and JOM are risky, but will hopefully pay off.
Also you’ve only listed 7 players.

      1. May i ask why not Barlow he was scoreing 150 plus last 6 games at freo and goes to a team that he will get a lot of the ball snd why pick swoller over j omera omera is the better player going to a much better team also viney id a contested ball pig jusy watch the big scores he gets this year. Anc beams i am willing to take the risk knew coach he is a cap know so i think he will be a better pick then rocky and zorko

        0

        1
        1. At around $530k Viney and Barlow are not reliable enough to be spending that sort of cash. Neither averaged 100 last year. Viney only 10 x 100’s in 22 games. If your picking either of them at that price your picking them as keepers so your basically saying you think those two will be in the top 10 midfielders come season end. Would have to be a miracle for that to happen. You can spend another $100-$130k upgrade both to players that will average 20 points higher than they both will. Danger and Priddis are great and safe picks. O Meara Swallow and Beams are all risky picks if your taking all three of them you would want to make sure the rest of your midfield is very durable and very consistent scorers. Viney and Barlow aren’t either of those things.

    1. You can’t start without Danger, its suicide. Option 1 for that reason.
Some damn expensive rookies you’ve got forward too. I wouldn’t feel comfortable starting that many on field. I’d drop Thurlow and one or more expensive FWD rookies and upgrade another to a premium forward.

    2. opt.2 Danger,s a lock for mine . Maybe try downgrade Simpson to Otten or simular price rookie down back, upgrade McCarthy or Turner too Dalhaus or Mccrae.

  23. As mentioned previously Jack Steven is my dark horse to be pushing for top 6 Mid. With all the speculation about Max Gawn sharing the ruck role, it’s thrown me off his price tag and I decided to have 7 premium mids instead. I understand my forward lacks depth but forwards over the last few years haven’t averaged as high as other positions. Tell me what you think, cheers!

    DEF: S. Docherty, H. Shaw, R. Laird, C. Hampton, E. Vickers-Willis, A, Otten (Hibberd, T. Stewart)

      1. Disagree. Sandy didn’t miss a game through injury for the two previous years before last and averaged 108 in both those years. Martin 7/20 for Supercoach toms last year is not a good conversion for a “premium” ruck. I’d rather spend the $180k less on Sandy even if he breaks down after 6-8 games he will have outscored most rucks and made you enough money to upgrade if you don’t think he will get through the season. I wouldn’t touch Martin โŒโŒโŒ

    1. Interesting selections… quite a few mid pricers in there. You’ve got a lot of certain starters in most departments but I’m not too sure about JS of Ottens or Newman in your back line. A very different set up to a lot of teams. Hope you go well.

Note: I understand my forward line is light on/risky, but I am not sold on many forward premiums this year. I could wriggle a few things around and possibly get Nankervis up to J.Kennedy, but I do like the insurance Nankervis provides for the Sandilands punt.

        1. I’m well aware of the bye situation. Luckily, the week that my backline is out, most of the rest of my team is in. I know it might look problematic at first glance, but if you run it through the SCT Bye Planner, as I did, then you’ll see it’s actually not so bad.

Moreover, two of the Crows in question are rookies, and so will hopefully not be needed by the time time their bye comes around.

        1. Personally I feel that Nick has worked on his grammar in the off season even though there is work yet to be done – trust me some of the posts from last season would have taken longer to read than write. Or perhaps I have become more accustomed to his style of writing.

I also find his posts entertaining in an odd way even though some the factual info needs to be taken in with a grain of salt.

    7
    1. Finally, some love for Hickey! You’re right about PODs – I forget why a team FULL of PODs is a good thing?

I like a lot of the selections
JJK, Lynch – both have been in and out of my side, but not at the same time, and not as the only FWDs I’d be relying on (while Greene did ok for me, I don’t trust him). Having said that, they’re just as likely to score well as Franklin and NRoo (also a combo I considered but dropped)
Hickey, Nankervis – could both have great years, but if either doesn’t, you could be in trouble

      Selections I don’t like
Relying way too much on 2 DEF that aren’t good enough to do that. Add 1 more (Shaw/Doc/Silk) and just be watchful of Round 1 that both Stewart and Ryan are actually playing
Wines burnt me badly, I cannot trust him again. T Mitchell could be anything, but I’m leaning towards the other Mitchell.

Overall – every line looks like it was set up on a budget, I can’t see where the money went. Sorry if that seems harsh. Too many midpriced players maybe?

    1. The most impressive part of this is that you got it to exactly $10 million.
      Well played sir.
      But seriously… nice team!

The only thing I would ask is: is it risky starting without a ‘G’ in your ruck combo? Gawn, Goldy or Grundy?
But that would require a big change to find the money. The risk could pay off.

    1. If you want the link, trade out Wigg (relying on injuries to get a run), swing Hibberd to the MIDs and bring in another rookie defender.

      1

      0
      1. Ok sounds good thought Wigg was a sure starter. All of sudden seems to be less depth in rookie defenders after JLT any ideas for another rookie? Also how’s the look of the team more generally?

        0

        0
        1. Def & Mids solid. Going in with all of Fyfe, Beams, O’Meara & Swallow returning from injury could be a bit risky, although Fyfe and Beams are obviously hard to ignore.

          Rucks – exceptional.

Forwards – Roughead, Steele & Taranto have their own associated risks but could pay off if they all fire. I’d consider trying to upgrade one of them to a premo but that may affect your other lines.

          1

          0
          1. I’m just finding there are no sure things to upgrade to in fwd line, so I’m investing it on other lines. I know mids are risky but can’t ignore prices like o’meara swallow and beams :). Who were you thing of forward? Just very reluctant for a kpp

            0

            0
            1. Yes not many premos in the fwd line if you are staying away from KPPs although Buddy might be the safest bet given that he seems to be playing more through the wing as well and looked great in the JLT games but you never know with Horse.

              0

              0
        2. The amount of decent rookies certainly subdued as JLT went on.

Overall structure is good although Goldy/Gawn in the rucks is certainly limiting what can be improved. Might be something to look at come team announcements if you need money to upgrade a couple of rookies to the more expensive ones.

  44. Hey folks

Only recently started putting a team together over the last 2-3 weeks. Any feedback would be awesome:

DEF: Shaw, Montagna, Hampton, Otten, Vickers-Willis, Chol. Bench: (Melican, Stewart).

MID: Danger, Parker, Treloar, Ward, Fyfe, Beams, O Meara, SPP. Bench: (Pickett, Hibberd, Freeman).

    Ruck: Martin, 211. Bench: (Strnadica).

FWD: Kennedy, Dahlhaus, Franklin, Greene, Ryder, Turner. Bench: (Uebergang, Eddy).

    Remaining $7,600

P.S – If Montagna isn’t fit for Rd1, he’ll be replaced by Laird. Similarly any non-playing rookies will most likely be replaced, except for Uebergang who I’m planning to use as a loophole for the first couple of rounds.

    Thoughts?

    0

    0
    1. Having two floating donuts (Uebergang, Strnadica) is crazy talk. Will waste a trade and generate no cash. Just pick Strnadica as he’s useful for Sandi/Ryder.

      2

      0
      1. Hmm – perhaps you are correct. Although it seemed to work OK in previous years with M Cox & H Goddard from memory. I’ll take the feedback on board.

        1

        0
        1. Cox and Goddard were likely to play though, neither of the freo rookies will.

If you are looking for someone, B.Long (StK) could be your best bet.

  45. What’s everyone think:
DEF: Simpson, Shaw, Laird, Hampton, Vickers-Willis, Stewart (Newman, Guthrie)

    0

    1
    1. Overall don’t mind the set up. Personally not sure if Zorko with Beams back is worthy of a starting premo mid spot? Especially with the likes of Treloar around the same price. Could even go cheaper and grab Mitchell, Heppell or Beams and use that extra coin to upgrade Ruck.

    1. Overall I like it. Nice semi-PODs. Only suggestion, you may be better off dropping some of the more expensive rookie-type options to allow you to upgrade the likes of Howe or maybe grab JOM? Although really just depends if you think Howe will be top 6 DEF or if you can trust JOM.

    1. A bit of nonsensical reasoning.

Missy on current form (or 2015 form where he also had a preseason flyer) is a top 10 forward. Ignore this weeks score it was on half a game.

Mills is a similar scenario, half a game for that 38.

Gawn with Spencer in the team worries me. If Gawn and Spencer line up together in Rnd 1 then I need to seriously consider Martin, Hickey or Witts, or just running a Nankilands ruck line up, NRoo up forward and ditching Ottens for Marchbank.

  55. Couple of different strategies this year to my normal each year not going with the set and forget rucks with Melb possibly playing 2 rucks Gawn may not score big early and i think ryder is a good chance for a great year . And im loading right up in the midfield which i normally dont do .

Shaw Adams Laird Marchbank Hampton Otten (Newman Vickers/willis) .
Dangerfield Pendlebury Kennedy Treloar Fyfe Beams Omeara Powell/pepper (Pickett Barrett Hibberd ) .
    Ryder Sandilands (Strnadica).
    Dahlhaus Mccrae J Roughead Nankervis
    Hoskin/Elliott Eddy (Butler Parfitt ) .
    Good luck to all supercoachers
