RIP Phil Walsh

Written by Motts on July 3 2015

It was such a shock to learn about the death of Phil Walsh this morning. The terrible news left me stunned and even now, 5 hours after learning of it I’m still in disbelief.

I don’t know if there’s anyone out there feeling the same way but I thought I’d put this post up all the same in case people wanted to share something.

Rest in peace, Phil.

  1. Such an inspirational figure; encapsulated in his reaction to his near-death experience in Peru. Thoughts with his family and friends. Tragic and senseless. RIP Walshy.

  2. Such terrible and unexpected news I heard waking up for work at 8 AM today…

    R.I.P Phil Walsh

Still really shocked personally and if the Round was to be cancelled and rescheduled because of this, it would be the most reasonalble option in respect to the great man.

Will be greatly missed, thoughts are with his family and friends.

  3. You would totally understand if the Crows couldn’t play this week. This doesn’t just affect the players, it affects everyone in the coaches box and on the support staff. I honestly don’t know how they could to be honest.

There is never a good time to reschedule the game to so I think Matteo’s right – they’d probably have to just declare it a draw.

From a SC perspective, I think the best way to do it is to effectively make this another bye round.

  4. Only knew of him from his media interviews, and he seemed to be exactly the sort of fatherly figure you would want as the coach of a football team. I don’t know what will happen next, but it should be left to the players and the club to decide, and whatever choice they make will be the right one.

  5. Totally shocked and shattered. Heard the news with no detail on the way to work, which added to the shock.

Will be sadly missed by not only the Crows community, but the community in general. My son and I have flown the Crows towel from the carport.

  6. Thoughts go out to the family, friends and wider AFL community who knew him. I think it’s wonderful that the AFL decided not to play the game in respect of the circumstances. I don’t think supercoach really matters in all of this.

  7. I went through teachers college and played footy with Phil. Really struggling to process the whole thing. He had real presence, intelligence and humor. Obviously someone who had a major impact on everyone who had dealings with him.

  9. Read it in disbelief and had to double check it was The Phil Walsh.

Most shocking was how it happened.

Condolences to all involved. Footy doesn’t even matter at times like these.

  10. It really hasn’t hit home to be honest. There’s other pages where people are attacking each other for mentioning SC points but I didn’t know Walshy, not related to him or even much of a footy fan so while it’s horrible news, it would be wrong for me to be grieving.
I would think if they award any SC points they would follow the usually standardised amount of points per game; and I wouldn’t be surprised if they divided it evenly by 44.

  11. Such a sad day, I couldn’t believe my eyes and ears when I first heard the tragic news. I never met the man but he looked like a character who loved his footy and he kinda reminded me of a young Kevin Sheedy with his wacky press conferences.
Sometimes life just isn’t fair, RIP Phillip Walsh.

  12. RIP Phil.

    Such sad news.

While reasonably new on the coaching scene to us he was one that it was worth watching the press conferences for. Obviously loved his footy and was prepared to show a bit of emotion.

A really tough time for the family and club.

I hope everyone gets the support they need.

  14. RIP Phil Walsh.

Condolences to Phil Walsh’s wife and friends.

Between this and Roughead’s diagnosis: A reminder that there is more to life than work and football. Not sure about everyone else but I’ve lost a lot of interest in tonight’s game.

  15. Such sad news, when I woke up I thought it was all a hoax but not its true

I know the 4 points won’t really matter to Adelaide but I’d like to see my cats give Adelaide the 4 points

R.I.P Walshy, my condolences go out to the family and friends

  16. Excuse my ignorance but using the loophole can I put the vc on say Dusty then if I like his score put the C on Read (Geelong) with the E on Maric and if Maric’s score is in my top 18 then his score counts.

Seem’s trivial given the circumstances but would appreciate advice.

    TU – Yes u r right
TD – No and clarity required

  17. Shocked all day.
I feel a bit weird grieving when i didn’t know him or his family.
Its amazing how big an effect this has had on the whole football community.
He seemed a great bloke and im sure his short time at the crows will leave a lasting impact.
I think cancelling this match is the right call from the afl.
The only positive that can come from this is a possible spotlight on mental health issues which is an under recourced area in our country.
Condolences to the family and friends

  18. RIP Phil, dark day for AFL indeed. Am a cats fan and absolutely respect and support Sunday’s decision. Even just a week is far from enough for the Adelaide players and staff this will unfortunately stay with them for a long time and I hope they get full support, advice, and counselling for quite some time along with all the people he has touched in our great game.
Thouht are with his family and friends.
