Here’s a topic from an Irishman
Top Irish in Supercoach….
1.HANLEY, Pearce (Lions)
$447,700
2.CLARKE, Marty (Pies)
$170,000
3.TUOHY, Zach (Blues)
$259,100
4.WALSH, Tommy (Swans)
$113,200
Each one great value in their own right and hard to leave out of any team??
Have I got my green blinkers on or what does everyones else think??

OK its early in the preseason but here are my thoughts:

Mid: Coniglio, Stevens
Ruck: Giles, Stephenson
Fwd: Zorko, Saad
Humungus asterisk next to this analysis – need to see NC form.
Hot debate. What do you think?

Koby Stevens, WC rookie…………young 20 year old, 2nd year in the system (I think).. from Gippsland way, 6’3 hard at it young midfielder. He doesn’t seem to hold back in his efforts & goes at it as hard as a cat’s head Andy.
Won’t let you down & will make great mid emg & $$$$ for an upgrade mid season IMO!

I had Saad to begin with until I read he actually only moved back to Australia when he was 16 and had never played AFL before that. He did look pretty good in the VFL last year but it’s a big step up and he’ll looking to play the same role that Milne and Schneider already fill. Sounds like a project player to me.
Word is Treloar has impressed more than any of the higher picks on the track so far.

Apparently he’s done a lot of work on his running technique over the summer RB. Hopefully it helps. Sizzle is still a risk, but one worth taking imo. He’ll be in the The Phat Side come round 1.

I am considering both.
Traditionally Rioli has been off my radar due to injuries but if he had a full pre season and is managed well I think he may be worth the risk.
Martin has a huge opportunity to improve again this year. If the Tigers play Lids in the middle Martin there is more chance of Martin running relatively free which he will love.

It seems like an easy start (GWS should be), but if you look at Goodes’ averages against those teams, he’s actually DOWN by 10 points or so against the “easy teams” he has at the start.

Got a really strong gut feeling that’s all going to change in 2012.
His 1st round v GWS might just be the perfect opportunity to elevate his traditional slow start to a SC season into GOLD… Possibly a great (C) choice R1 too. In saying that, there’s still a long long way to go till R1 Damen.
Like or Dislike:

I’m not talking about Goodes traditionally starting slowly – that’s not my concern. What I’m saying is that he doesn’t play well against the particular teams he is coming up against early in the 2012 season – even when he has faced them late in the season in previous years.
I think it would be better to make Goodes Vice Captain (at least initially) in the first round rather than Captain – that way if he doesn’t score as highly as we both believe he will, we can still change the Captain to Gazza or Pendles or someone else.
Like or Dislike:

Fair point regarding the Capt/VC choice, Will do! I keep forgetting about that bloody little loophole Grrrrr!
I’ve seen both Horse & Goodes talk at separate times on Foxtel regarding Goodsey & his ability to fall away against the not so good teams & rise to the occasion against the better teams. The other point they spoke about was how his 2nd 1/2 of the season has been traditionally better in recent times & they want to work on that as well……the fact that the club has reconized it, tells me that Goodsey clearly knows about it & as a true champion that he is….I personally think he will come to the party & do a lot better in 2012 against those not so good teams & from R1. Going out for dinner Damen, back on the site later tonight, cheers

Yeah – it’s one of those interesting things … when I saw who Goodes was playing first 6 rounds or so, I thought “Awesome, I’m on again from the start this year” and it was only by fluke I saw that he doesn’t score as well against those teams, which really surprised me. It must be like Hodge or Bartel – if they’re playing in an important game or a final you know they’re going to take it up a notch. I suspect they just “relax” a little when they’re not totally required
Like or Dislike:

Totally agree, the relax games…….the best tend to do it Damen like as you said Hodgey, Bartel, Goodes & Co.
DMac did a post a couple of days ago about Goodes, that made me look back into him again this season…. as he’s looked after me over the last few years in SC, plenty of upside (if) Goodes fires from R1 GWS, R3 Port, R5 my beloved Hawks ( and he smashes us ) ave of around 125 after that he play the Crows, Tigers & Melbourne where his ave is over 100, then backs it up v the Doggies ave 130 odd………..IMO Goodes is a proven keeper/gun.
I’ve currently got Dusty Martin in, but at the start of R1 7 NAB Cup games, Goodsey might of snuck back in the 22 for Catta’s Clan.

Except that Gunston is not capable of playing a “small forward” role – he is far closer to a key position forward. He’s 193cm (Taller than Pavlich, same height as JROO). Rioli – like most “small forwards” is under 180cm, at 177cm. Gunston also doesn’t have the agility, speed, “crumbing” nous and tackling ability that small forwards need.

Very good point. IMO the Captiancy of a team can weigh heavily on a player and the higher profile and game day importance can also add to that weight. I think this could effect Swallow and Selwood and neither will walk up start my team till I see how they handle the extra responsibility. I like what the D’s have done a lot. Huge fan of the concept and wish the Hawks were not quite so attached to the one captain policy. In their case Hodge is clearly a natural on field leader and has improved under that responsibility but he will never be the on screen captain that Sammy is. Sammy is a better player for not having to lead on field but is still one of the best spoken, intelligent and (for the press AND chicks “prettiest”) sought after speakers on the game. I dont know either of the D’s players well enough but hope that this is the kind of result they are after.

Motts,
I don’t think the captaincy will make a huge difference. Swallow will continue to rack them up but I have Trengrove in my midfield but worry about him not being able to shake a hard tag in Scully’s absence. Your thoughts? I thought he was good value

MID: Ablett, Mitchell, Hayes, Christensen, Wingard, Treloar (Kavanagh, McDonald)
RUCK: Leunenberger, Renouf (Giles, Stephenson)
FOR: Franklin, Fyfe, Gray, McGlynn, J.Brown, Porplyzia, Zorko (Saad, Walsh)

The big question Kenpiz, are Fyfe’s shoulders going to be ok? He’s pretty lean & if he hasn’t put on muscle over the pre-season he might just be eased into the season by Ross Lyon…..it’s a long season & I’m sure, Fremantle FC want him in their best 22 come the pointy end of the season. Goodes for me, although much older he’s a proven champ & a great SC scorer!
PS……I think young Nat Fyfe has got a bright future ahead of him too!

Motts, I’m now going with grimes on the back line but trengrove has a bye with Pendles, swan and selwood all who I’m considering. Swallow is an option but I’ve left the round 11 teams as my upgrade options after the bye. I hope that makes sense because I tend to confuse myself.

RATE MY CURRENT SC TEAM:
633K STILL IN BANK
BACKS: B GODDARD, B DELEDIO, M SUCKLING, B LAKE, M CLARKE,T MOHR (W SIERAKOWSKI, L BROWN)
MIDS: G ABLETT, S MITCHELL, J SELWOOD, M BARLOW, L HAYES, D PFEIFFER (D SHIEL, T MITCHELL)
RUCKS: T WEST, H MCINTOSH ( J GILES, T DERICKX)
FORWARDS: N FYFE, D MARTIN, P DANGERFIELD, J BUTCHER, A SAAD, D ZORKO, A TRELOAR ( B SMEDTS, J LAMB)
SUGGESTIONS??
I am aware i have gone pretty cheap in the forwards, but i believe that there are a few that will play consistently and grow in value.
i dont know about T WEST either, i originally had D COX but realised that i can save some money and get west because he will play due to Ottens retiring and Vardys injury

I do not mind your unique ruck structure, nice thinking.
I do think you need another captian choice in the mids. I suggest you spend some of that cash on Pendle, Swan, Murph, etc.
I think Butcher is a little expensive, there is better value out there.

i haven’t really got any mid range players around 300K in the midfield i would swap for pendles or swan. if i was to look at getting one of them all my bank will have gone. i was thinking once the few guys i have increase in value there will be room for swan and pendles perhaps around round 7 if pfeiffer and shiel’s value increase as much as i hope they will. i want to have a sensational team for finals. i will make finals with this team its all about setting up to have the stars when it counts.

How about Nicky Dal gg, speaks well on the footy show & plays in & around the guts where I think a lot of captains seem to be these days!
Release NRoo to kick goals, Lenny although amazing he’s got his knee’s to worry about & Goddard only IMO doesn’t seem to have that approacable personality that comes with the big C role ( no disrespect) I think he’s a wonderful player!

Yeah true DS, although nothing like the Matty Richardson days
( where Tigers fans would cover their eyes as he walk in to kick ). But hard not to love Matty, I think NRoo fit & with less to worry about ( C ) will be a much much better player, and we all know just how damaging he can be on his day!

LOL – Matty Richardson and Travis Cloke – the only 2 blokes who can CONSISTENTLY miss goals from 10m out directly in front. If I coached either of them, I’d be saying “even if you marked well inside the 50m, take the shot from just outside the 50m line”.

That’s a tuff one Rizy……..I might just lean towards Godd/Burgs, it may well be the loyalty speaking here, but I’m just not convinced Barlow will be back to his 2011 steller form for a while. Sorry Catta, but I’d say you’re definitely looking through your Hawthorn glasses. Burgs will turn 30 this year, which spells danger straight away from a SC perspective. He’s only averaged 16 games a season since 2008.
Barlow just turned 24 yrs old. His average last year, after coming back from a broken leg, was still four points higher than Burgs (83.7). He averaged 116 in 2010. Even if he doesn’t reach the heights he did in 2010, I’d still expect him to raise his avg by about 20 ppg. Whereas I can’t see Burgoyne doing something similar.
Hot debate. What do you think?

One of the most painful decisions im going through this year is:
Barlow, Hayes or Cooney? I reckon i have changed my mind about 50 times – but i definitely want one of them. Nicky Dal is a certainty for me – so that might be enough for me to not take Lenny because of the bye; Barlow – new coach & structures so always hesitant; and Cooney is just the worst of the lot so im hesitant to pick him up too. Im thinking if i take Lenny i’ll upgrade him later in the year so the bye may not even affect me much, but i still cant make up my damn mind!!!

Probably got the best of the bunch pretty well covered there. Personally I’m saving the coin and staying away from Coniglio and Tyson. Treloar goes straight into the FWDs. Despite a lot of talk about Stevens preseason, he is still far from a certainty to start RD1.
So that leaves Clifton, Horsley, Shiels and McDonald. For the byes I’d like to have Horsley in there but don’t forget he is still rookie listed.
A few others who might not have been talked about here as much but have plenty of buzz around them at their clubs – Clay Smith (WBD) Sebastian Ross (STK) Lachie Neale (FRE) Tom Mitchell (SYD)

Captains will come from the usual suspects. GAJ, Pendles, Swan, Joelwood, Buddy, Murphy and others like Judd, Swallow, Boyd, Goddard when they’re playing GWS.

Goddard I’d keep, and your 3 defenders at about $100,000. Gablett and Murphy I’d keep – I’d get rid of all the rest (you can keep Goodes or Pav if you slot them into your fwd line), I’d discard all your rucks and out of that fwd line, I think only Buddy and your 2 rookies are good selections (MAYBE N Riewoldt if he’s truly over his knee injuries and learns how to cope with the fwd press and having to outmark 3 opponents on a regular basis). OK. I’ll be nice and give you Cloke too.

lol the forwards are all in the list of top contested mark takers for last season. except for higgins. it was hurley but i couldnt stand to leave hurley in cause hes shit….and i hate him…..supercoach gives massive points for contested marks. if all these players fired having an above average game you could see a 2800+ round score

Higgins is too injury prone for the price. Why worry about one isolated statistic like “contested marks” ? Especially when this has already been factored into their averages from last year. Oh, I see – you are going for a “weekly win” ? Even so, J Riewolt has a tough start to the season, and all these “Key Forwards” are going to struggle more and more as teams perfect the “forward press” and flood the space. Why not look at some of the players who manage to average well AND can also get monster scores, so that you are a better chance for a league or overall win as WELL as the weekly prize ?
Stevie J will get you monster scores as will Adam Goodes (so pop him in the forward line and get a real mid to take his place in the midfield) as will D Martin (of course L Franklin will as will n Roo if he kicks goals instead of points). T Cloke doesn’t tend to nor does Josh Kennedy (notwithstanding one 11 goal haul last year). J Butcher is a high price for a largely unproven player, and for your emergencies wouldn’t you rather have a mature age midfielder (consistent) than a largely untried key position player ?
Jarryd Roughead has to be a mammoth risk coming back from his achilles and having such a minimal preseason. Renouf – value as a 1st ruck, but he’s never scored well in the past (even with adequate game time). Wingard weighs less than a leaf and Morabito is still not in full training.
The backline is the real mess though … even if you believe “contested marks” is the way to a weekly prize, players like McPharlin are far better as players than they are as candidates for Supercoach selection.

Warnock should play at GC but has never averaged above 60 ppg in about 6 seasons – and you’re not getting him cheaply. Phil Davis will be under a lot of pressure in a young team at GWS, has had injury concerns AND has only played a few good games in his entire carreer – and you’re paying almost $300,000 for him ? Jake Carlisle has only played about 10 games and is almost at the price of the fallen Premiums from last year. Brodie Martin – maybe, but can anyone say “sub vest” ? At least he’s not too expensive, but do you think he is taking Armstron’s spot in the team ? Who is he replacing in the team to get a consistent game this year ?

And if you really, REALLY just want great contested mark players in your team, why not find the extra $100,000 to upgrade Butcher to Jonathan Brown ? At least then you are buying someone cheaper than he should be, rather than someone who is expensive for a person who has only played, what, 4 AFL games in his career ?

lol its funny, i pretty much thought the same about the whole team, like why leave out j brown?? i pulled that team off allfooty.info its funny. they think that you have to pick a winning team from the start rather than build it. feel free to comment on their teams. they have 1 with all the big guns and best rookies or something, and the best 200 players to choose from for SC

Pretty sure he only played a handful of games IN 2011 gg, only 1 that I can remember that was good was at the SCG v Lions….he got 115ish but outside of that…..not reliable enough for SC IMO!

You can’t go wrond with any of them. Swan should be the best but I do like Murphy. Otherwise Thompson from the Crows has good start early and should get massive scores against GC suns Rd1, GWS and Port in the first five rounds. Plus he is a solid scorer anyway and will be a keeper.

Question for any bulldogs people here.
Will Dale Morris being out of the side for the first few months of the season open up a chance for Talia to get some games?
Will be interesting to see how that backline sets up this year.

” It will be assisted by the return of Ben Stratton and Stephen Gilham from injury and also hopefully the emergence of Jarrad Boumann, who’s another tall defender that can give some assistance”
Sounds like hawk recruit boumann might be a good upgrade target during the year.

thoughts on docherty bugg and golds (all gws) and whether they’re ahead of ellis and morris (both tigers)?
Like or Dislike:

Docherty isn’t GWS, he’s Brisbane and won’t be right until the season starts for real. Golds and Bugg seem good, but with GWS no-one knows what they will do and who will play – have to wait for preseason on that one. Ellis and Morris both good picks.

Docherty is from Brisbane, but anyway he is on a modified training program and won’t play any NAB Cup but is on track for R1 of the season proper.
The two tiger cubs are a mile in front of the GWS lads, although watch Steve Morris as he was recently in Richmond’s rehab group. Docherty is a highly touted youngster and his DPP status makes him even more appealing. It’s just a shame we won’t get a look at him before the season starts.

hes on the radar for sure.
should play most weeks.
he’s a key position player and there scores can be very inconsistent to start with. NAB cup will be his time to shine if he’s getting picked up in SC.
Avg the most marks and contested marks at the giants last year.

This is the team as it stands, upgrade plans include pendles and buddy (hopefully they cop a little price degradation), thoughts and criticisms:
Def: Scotland, Deledio, H Shaw, C Enright, Clarke, Ellis, Mohr (L Brown, C Heath)
Mid: Ablett, Murphy, Priddis, Swallow, Hayes, K Stevens (J McDonald, T Mitchell)
Ruck: Naitanui, Kreuzer (Stephenson, Giles)
Forwards: Rioli, D Martin, J Brown, A Christensen, G Rohan, A Treloar, T Walsh (Smedts and Zorko)
Probably taking a chance on some smokeys in the forward line and crossing fingers for MID to carry them. All feedback welcome. Mick

two questions here. firstly whats everyones thoughts on adam kennedy of gws? and two with lyons now head honcho at freo and his game plan of chip around in the back half, who does everyone think has the most chance of jumping in supercoach points? im thinking out of suban, diffield and ibbotson? thoughts?

Good questions! I definitely think Suban will improve this year. I also really like the way Silvagni goes about it and reckon he’ll do a lot better this year as well. Duff – not sure, he had plenty of chances to impress last year but never really took ‘em. Ibbo I’ve never considered since his rookie year – doesn’t fall into a GnR strategy.
