Reserves Rookie Review – Round 21

Written by Alza on August 11 2021

With COVID restrictions in Melbourne there was no VFL this week. Peel didn’t have any rookie priced players again and West Coast had a bye leaving the Showdown in the SANFL as the only game to go through.  This will be the last official reserves review for the year with next week being a bit of a recap on some of the players to look out for next year. Thank you all for reading over the year. Let me know who is on your radar for next year and should be in the recap next week.

SANFL

ADELAIDE
Adelaide 13.4.82 def. Port Adelaide 10.9.69

James Rowe $275k FWD – 26 disposals (12 kicks), kicked 2.0, 5 marks and had 4 clearances – 98 (98/1)
Sam Berry $192.6k MID – 19 disposals (8 kicks), 3 marks, 11 tackles and had 4 clearances – 94 (94/1)
Luke Pedlar $162.3k MID – 3 disposals (all kicks) – 10 (51/10)
Kieran Strachan $146.7k RUC/FWD – 15 disposals (11 kicks), 5 marks, 5 tackles, 6 clearances, 33 hitouts and had 4 frees against (3 for) – 100 (105/15)
Josh Worrell $123.9k DEF/FWD – 24 disposals (18 kicks), 5 marks (1 contested) and had 8 rebound 50s – 85 (68/14)
Lachlan Gollant $123.9k DEF/MID – 13 disposals (10 kicks), kicked 4.1 and took 6 marks (4 contested) – 82 (57/6)
Ronin O’Connor $123.9k MID – 19 disposals (6 kicks), 11 tackles and had 8 clearances – 89 (73/13)
James Borlase $102.4k DEF – 16 disposals (10 kicks), 7 marks and laid 4 tackles – 80 (54/15)
Patrick Parnell $102.4k DEF – 16 disposals (9 kicks), 5 marks (1 contested), 3 tackles and had 4 rebound 50s – 70 (46/7)

Verdict: Lots of good scores coming from the mini showdown. Rowe played his first game in the SANFL and was among the best with 2 goals and plenty of the ball. Berry had a great game in the middle with an equal team high 11 tackles as did O’Connor. Strachan was among the best with a great all round game. O’Brien is out this week meaning he should get a game this week as he has been performing very well in the SANFL. Worrell and Parnell were good down back. Gollant kicked 4 goals in his best game of the year with Borlase having his best of the year also. Pedlar suffered a badly rolled ankle and will miss the rest of the AFL season

PORT ADELAIDE
Adelaide 13.4.82 def. Port Adelaide 10.9.69

Joel Garner $189.9k DEF – 18 disposals (16 kicks), kicked 2.1, 8 marks (1 contested) and laid 4 tackles – 107 (62/13)
Martin Frederick $165.6k DEF – 20 disposals (7 kicks), 6 marks and laid 6 tackles – 87 (73/6)
Sam Hayes $123.9k RUC – 15 disposals (12 kicks), 8 marks (3 contested), 3 tackles and had 36 hitouts – 106 (87/14)
Jackson Mead $123.9k MID – 10 disposals (4 kicks) and laid 4 tackles – 46 (65/6)
Dylan Williams $123.9k MID/FWD – 16 disposals (15 kicks), kicked 4.1 and took 5 marks (1 contested) – 85 (58/13)
Jed McEntee $102.4k MID – 15 disposals (6 kicks) and took 3 marks – 53 (71/11)

Verdict: Garner had his best game of the year with a good all round display as did Frederick. Hayes was excellent around the ground and in the ruck just winning the hitout battle. Williams had a great game kicking 4 goals while Mead and McEntee were a bit quiet
