Rookie Review – Round 3, 2020

Written by Chillo on June 23 2020

I can’t really remember a round of footy that inspired so much conversation, for good (Rowell is a freak, the Blues jag a win) and not-so-good reasons. Here’s a quick recap of round 3.

DEFENDERS
PlayerClubPriceScore (Avg)BE
Brandon STARCEVICH (MID)BRL$230 500 (+$50.8K)89 (72)-56
Jarrod BRANDER (FWD)WCE$207 300 (+$44.3K)75 (64)-17
Trent RIVERS (MID)MEL$117 300DNP (62)-17
Fischer MCASEYADE$191 100 (+$7.2K)53 (40)4
Tom WILLIAMSONCAR$146 30055 (55)4
Will HAMILLADE $123 90040 (40)8
Hayden YOUNG FRE$185 800 (+$5.5K)41 (41)24
Lachlan ASH (MID)GWS$193 80039 (39)36

I know we whined a bit about def rookies at the start of the season and justifiably so, but the combination of Brander and Brandon is keeping many teams afloat at this time. After a deathly quiet first term, Starcevich was again excellent for the Lions with 12 touches and his first career goal from a memorable roost after the quarter time siren. Brander showed good form in a beaten side, counting 8 marks in his tally, and tidier disposal would’ve seen him score even better. Williamson (8 possessions) was solid in his first game for the Blues in over a year, and is on the bubble this week if you need a downgrade option. With Newman unfortunately done for 2020, his job security looks okay.

Not much to talk about elsewhere – Rivers didn’t play but also remains a good option on the bubble for a trade this week, while the others failed to impress in their Supercoach efforts.

MIDFIELDERS

Noah ANDERSONGCS$239 600 (+$18.8K)51 (56)11
Kyron HAYDENNTH$138 200 (+$3.5K)34 (30)19
Ned MCHENRYADE$125 200 (+$1.3K)17 (26)21
Marlion PICKETTRIC$201 500 (+$39.8K)50 (60)28

He’s only three games into his career and I’ve already run out of superlatives for Rowell. He’s so good that his cash generation has become meaningless – if you’ve got him, you keep him, no questions asked.

Brown has been walking the selection tightrope but had his best game so far against the Saints, with 15 disposals at 86% and a goal. He’s playing well in a strong Pies side and it’s going to be hard for Bucks to leave him out. Pickett, on the other hand, seems to be struggling without a big crowd to play in front of, and could only manage 10 possessions in a well beaten Tigers lineup. He still has a little more cash to make, but needs to lift.

Caldwell was again okay in a disappointing Giants outfit, McInerney was omitted in favour of a second ruckman but may return soon, and Bennell will have to wait a bit longer for his second game in red and blue (but if anyone can handle waiting for an extra week for a game, it’s Harley!).

RUCKS
PlayerClubPriceScore (Avg)BE
Darcy CAMERON (FWD)COL$147 700 (+$23.8K)28 (51)-17
Archie SMITHBRL$179 20037 (37)32
Luke JACKSONMEL$198 300DNP (30)46

Normal service resumed in the rookie rucks this week, with low scores and little buzz. Cameron struggled to get into the game with only two kicks and 5 tackles, while Smith replaced the injured Stef but left most of the heavy lifting to the Big O McInerney.

FORWARDS
PlayerClubPriceScore (Avg)BE
Connor BUDARICK (MID)GCS$184 900 (+$48.5K)80 (62)-36
Sam STURTFRE$152 200 (+$28.3K)11 (56)-24
Max KINGSTK$192 600 (+$36.3K)51 (57)-18
Laitham VANDERMEER (MID)WBD$145 000 (+$21.1K)53 (48)-12
Thomas BERRYBRL$137 800 (+$13.9K)21 (40)0
Curtis TAYLORNTH$219 100 (+$45.7K)44 (67)3
Kysaiah KROPINYERI-PICKETTMEL$157 800DNP (57)4
Ben CROCKERADE$165 100 (+$13.1K)54 (44)6
Aiden BONAR (MID)NTH$202 80045 (45)34

Budarick was the standout forward of the week, ironically playing from the back pocket against the putrid Crows. 16 disposals and his maiden goal was a great return and got the thumbs up from the coaching staff. Vandermeer did some eye-catching things in the Dogs’ win, and is still cheap enough if you need a swingman. Dunkley’s absence may help him also! Taylor had a down week after two great games to start his career, while King and Crocker were quiet in sides that struggled to move the ball forward.

The rookie spud of the week unfortunately goes to Sturt, who was rarely sighted and registered donuts in the first half against Port. Most bitter for his 53,000 owners looking for some quick cash gen.

  1. We thought Walsh was a once in a decade Cash cow rookie . Rowell for sure is up there. Glad I started him. I have more doubt now about Green or others like Pickett and Sturt.
