Rookie Review – Round 5

Written by Alza on April 18 2023

Round 5 saw the first ever Gather Round in SA and what a weekend it was! It was also the introduction of DPP’s for the 1st time of 3 for the year. There were some handy additions with Sheezel getting his DEF status with a handful of MIDs gaining FWD status to provide more flexibility. As the rookies have played a few games now some resting or sub issues may start to arise. We saw this with Mackenzie named as the sub and dropped a 14 with Ginbey starting the game but was subbed out as management although he did cop a few heavy knocks during the game.

The rookies to target this week pending selection are Roberts, Williams and Johnson. I would be waiting a week on the likes of Long, Wagner and Gould. How good was it to finally see the enigma that is Will Gould make his long awaited debut over the weekend although he has now played himself out of our pre-season starting sides.

Players on the bubble are marked with an asterisk.

The Good: New defensive option in Sheezel managed to hit the ton again for 5 in a row. He finished with 31 touches at 71% with 2 marks and 2 tackles but 8 clangers stopped him from a real big score. Buckley kept his great form going with 16 touches at 81% with 6 marks, 3 tackles and 10 intercepts.

Jack BYTELSTK$160,100 (+$1.5k)14 (32)69

The Good: Ashcroft had a decent game in a big win over North with 23 touches at 74% with 7 marks and 4 tackles. Score was held back with only 2 contested possessions. Long played well in his 1st game of the season with 10 touches, 3 marks, 6 tackles and a goal. Johnson started his first game and had a decent score from 66% TOG and a massive final quarter with the game on the line. He finished with 15 touches at 87% with 2 marks, 3 tackles and a goal and should now hold his spot in the 22.

The Bad: Bytel’s cash generation has been ruined with another game as the sub. In 12% game time he had 6 touches at 83%.

Samson RYAN (FWD)RIC$173,000 (+$16.5k)56 (50)0

Ratugolea started like a house on fire with 7 intercepts in the 1st quarter. He finished the day with 14 touches at 64% with 9 marks and 4 tackles. He also had 5 one percenters and ended with 9 intercepts for the game for back to back 88’s. Ryan was a fairly popular trade target this week but didn’t set the world on fire as he is still mainly used as a key forward. 16 hitouts, 8 touches with 2 marks and a goal gave him a respectable score. Moyle was beaten on the day by big Darcy but he ended up with 18 hitouts, 4 touches and 3 tackles but he is still the 2nd in line behind Witts.

Cam Mackenzie (MID)HAW$263,300 (-$0.1k)14 (59)89

The Good: Roberts played a full game and didn’t he show what he can do. He had 14 touches but used it extremely well with 93% efficiency as well as 4 marks and 4 tackles. A great option to trade in this week with his new FWD status. Greene kicked 3 goals from 9 touches and 7 marks to keep his cash generation ticking along as a great starting pick. Phillips played well and has rewarded coaches the got him in with 19 touches at 84% with 2 marks and a goal after attending 21 centre bounces.

The Bad: McLean returned to the side as the sub after 47 touches in the VFL last week. Unfortunately he didn’t touch the footy in this game with just the 3 tackles in 17% TOG. As mentioned earlier Mackenzie was the sub with 36% TOG he had 5 touches at 40% and sent his breakeven up to 89. You could hold him as he should make more cash in a couple weeks when this 14 is out of his 3 round average.

Time To Trade: Mackenzie, King

  1. Can we get a separate rookie of the year award where we take Sheezel out???
It is an absolute domination hahaha

    1. Johnson 66% TOG, 2 CBA. Doesn’t seem like many pushing for selection. O’Driscoll may return from injury

Williams 78% TOG, Most possessions were in the defensive half, 0 in the F50. Bonner/Dumont most disposal SANFL match

Roberts 70% TOG. Disposal mainly on the wings, 50/50 split in DEF/FWD halves.
Lots available to return from injury in defence/fwd, so unclear on how team structure will go for Roberts. Has been played 4 games though, so on edge of best 22

    2. This is a really tricky one. Roberts should be as he has been around the mark all year and with a great game should hold but they do have a heap of injuries. Johnson didn’t do heaps but was excellent in the last quarter with the game on the line. Williams is playing in defence which is a new role for him but I haven’t seen him play yet but Port have pretty much no injuries at the moment and has performed fairly well so far so he should hold.

Williams, Roberts, Johnson but it’s very tight

  2. What are ppls thoughts on Luke Edwards over Williams / Mitchell / Roberts. Didnt watch sunday but week before he seemed to be across half back and coming into the midfield at times so may score well.

I know price is high but feel he has the best JS of everyone given all the eagles LTIs so may generate some good cash if he continues to average around the 70s

    1. 2022: Played Rd 3,4
      Scores 38, 64 subbed off injured 3QT (57% TOG)

      2023
      Rd 4: 16 D, 12 CP, 2 M, 0 T, 5 CBA, 4 CL, 75% DE, 78% TOG

      Rd 5: 10 D, 6 CP, 1 M, 7 T, 0 CBA, 4 CL, 80% DE, 76% TOG
O’Neil and Yeo had CBAs removing Edwards

A lot of players with injury that are TBC

Next 3 opponents: Port, Carlton, Richmond

Not too bad of an option, but need him to get a better disposal average and even tackle count

      1. I was at the game over the weekend and must admit I didn’t notice him but I also wasn’t looking out for him but he had a decent game.
He is a decent option for sure but with his elevated price it’s a bit off putting. With his price and the fact he only played 2 games last year (think he was out for the season) and didn’t start this season the reasons why he’s probably not top of the list.
