Rookie Review – Round 7

Written by Alza on May 2 2023

A bit of a rookie crisis seems to be upon us with a lot of popular rookies injured/suspended or just not picked currently. We have a few options but they are limited, thankfully we have DPP additions to help us swing players around these days.

Cincotta will be heavily traded in this week and rightfully so with Angwin and Simpson if selected the next best options. Wagner may return to the side but he seems risky now after being dropped after 2 games same with Gould.

Players on the bubble are marked with an asterisk.

Harry SHEEZEL (FWD)NTH$443,200 (+$4.4k)107 (103)93

The Good: Sheezel returned to his best with another 30 touch game going at 80% with 10 contested possessions and 11 marks with 8 intercepts. Buckley stepped up in the absence of Taylor with another great game. He had 17 touches at 82% although 5 clangers with 5 marks, 8 intercepts and huge 14 one percenters. Cincotta had a great 2nd game against the Eagles. He had 17 touches at 82% with 4 marks and 5 tackles, he should hold his spot and be a nice option for us this week.

The Bad: Kelly was the sub but he managed 52% TOG for his 8 touches at 38% with 4 clangers and 4 marks, desperate times…

Time To Trade: Michalanney, Ginbey

The Good: Ashcroft had his 2nd 100 of his career and also probably kicked the goal of the year. He finished with 28 touches, 7 marks and 2 goals and should be our last rookie upgraded at this stage.

Esava RATUGOLEA (FWD)GEE$320,000 (+$14.3k)43 (61)65

Ryan played well even with Soldo returning to the team. He kicked 2 goals from 11 touches with 5 marks and 12 hitouts. Ratugolea had a quieter game after a few good ones with just 5 touches but at 100% with 2 marks and 12 one percenters. Teakle continued as the main man in the middle, he had 18 hitouts with 7 tackles and 8 handballs. Ramsden made his debut and had 6 touches, 2 marks and 9 hitouts and will probably get another game.

Time To Trade: Ratugolea

Nathan KREUGER*COL$192,3008 (9)93

The Good: Chandler kicked 3 goals again, this time from 21 touches at 86%, 8 marks and 3 tackles. 8 score involvements also was a nice boost. King has gone back to back 100’s here after kicking 4 goals from 10 touches at 90% with 5 marks, started slow but has found some form at a decent time. Williams had his best game with 17 touches at a great 94% with 5 marks and 6 intercepts. I would have loved to have selected him but he wasn’t selected for his 3rd game but was the sub and was too risky but in his role he is a great pick for just 2.9% of coaches.

The Bad: Humphrey had a poor game and was subbed out in the 3rd quarter after 1 handball, 1 tackle and 3 clangers. Kreuger was injured after a knee knock very early on after 2 touches and a tackle. Comben suffered a fractured ankle in the 1st quarter and will be out indefinitely.

Time To Trade: Phillips, Clarke, Menzie, Mackenzie, Comben, Greene

  1. How do we feel about Teakle as an option? I usually like to have Ruck rookies as they can score well, but his JS and price point are cons.

    1. Lycett had 6 touches and 7 hitouts for the game in the SANFL. Seemed to favour Visentini (another Port ruckman). Hoping for some feedback from Port/SANFL fans to provide more info though? I actually think they may give Teak a good string of games, especially if Lycett is putting up numbers like that in the magoo’s…

      1. FnC,
I would be wary of Lycett’s stats from that game as he crashed to ground onto his back during a contest. He left the ground and didn’t return. (He has recovered well and may play this week in the SANFL. )

That being said he has to prove his form to be able return to AFL and Port should continue with young Teakle with support from Finlayson and Dixon.
That looks the most logical scenario.

Teakle’s Ruck Contest Percentage did drop from rd 6 to rd 7 from 81 to 64% with Finlayson going from 12 to 21% and Dixon resuming in rd 7 with 11%. Small sample base of only two games.

    2. I agree with FnC here.
Teakle will probably get a decent crack at the ruck role with Finlayson. Remember Teakle debuted the same week he was drafted in the mid-season draft last year but was injured early on which shows they like him.

At 200k and a Ruck only he is slightly expensive to only be a bench option. He should make decent money but as you’d be using a trade to get him and trade him out you would like him to increase by 150k to make it worth the trades.

If he was Ruck/Forward then he would be much more appealing as he could be used on field.
People with Grundy may look at it but that would mean another trade used on the Rucks as you wouldn’t want him in your side at the end of the year.

      1. I think it begs the question “How much money will Teakle realistically generate?”

I am not sure he will make 150k, certainly not scoring 60-70, but a random tonne changes the argument right away.

I’m still in 2 minds myself..

        1. I’m leaning towards yes, am playing with a boost and bringing in Simpson, Cincotta and Teakle. Rucks are one of the best scoring positions so the chance of Teakle having a good score and spiking is better than say a fwd or def rookie. As you say, all it takes is one and we’re off!

Also, not great rookies on the horizon. Probably worth the risk for me.
