BS Rookie Review Round 1

Written by Big Sexy on April 2 2013

With round 1 under the belt, I wouldn’t recommend swinging major changes just yet, but if you don’t have any of these blokes, then you might want to start hovering the cursor over the ‘T’ button.

My Top Five Rookie’s (<$200k) of the week:

1)    J Viney (Mid $109k) The son of a gun lived up to the hype he has carried for the last few years in a stellar performance.  Viney was taken at pick 26 in the 2012 draft under father-son.  As per one of the SEN presenters (who I can’t stand) summed it up, ‘Viney embarrassed the Melbourne players with a first year player leading the way and showing them how it’s done’.  Viney scored a sensational 117 points and had 22 disposals including kicking 1.1, taking 4 marks and laying 2 tackles.

2)    B Goodes (Def/Mid $128k)  Goodesy showed he’s got the goodes when it comes to playing AFL level.  He’s 28 years old and the brother of Sydney champ Adam and has finally got his chance to play and didn’t let anyone down in the doggies convincing win.  Goodes scored 113 points and had 24 disposals in addition to the 7 marks and 2 tackles.

3)    O Wines (Mid $169k)  Wines was the PA number 7 pick in the 2012 draft.  He was the highest first round rookie scorer with 125 points but with that comes a higher price tag.  He played exceptionally well in his first up run racking up 24 disposals took 7 marks, kicked 1.1 and layed 3 tackles so a very solid across the board.

4)    J Pittard (Def $128k)  Scoring a lazy 93 was a stellar effort.  Pittard played 13 games in 2011 and only manged 1 game last season with hamstring injury and cracked ribs.  He looks to be up and running now with the body looking fit and had 14 disposals, 6 marks and a goal.

5)    J O’Meara (Mid $115k) The Rock Star and favorite for the Rising Star looked pretty good in his first up run.  He was held back a year in the complex trade that saw him go to GC.  He scored a very respectable 72 and had 12 disposals, took 5 marks kicked 1.1 and layed a lazy 6 tackles.

  1. Got the top 4 and 6 others. No rush to bring any more in… unless another one cracks the hundred this week.

    Great writeup.

    Any news on KStevens yet?

  2. Wines the rising star nomination this week. Surprised it wasn’t viney. But very well deserved

  3. BS, most of us would have been dissapointed if you hadn’t used the “Goodesy showed he’s got the goodes…” line. Bravo! 😆

  4. 3 fwd eligible rookies out of 20 odd is so damn disheartening. Fingers crossed for a round 2 bolter.

  5. I’d say the those five are in most teams. Looks like there won’t be a rook like Toby Greene who jumps into relevance out of nowhere. Glass half full: at least there should be lesser round 3 rookie correction trades.

  6. Got all 5 and young Bradley Hill who I thought at quarter time was going to bring up a ton but alas, think he will get better as the season unfolds.

  7. Great analysis.

Have all but Wines and not happy with that (had Vlastuin and wasn’t near computer to swap him out before game – so big doughnut there!) Plus several others that I couldn’t get onto the park (or fully know what to do!!- I’m a rookie SC from Brisvegas, so help on this site is great!!)
My scores for Rd 1: 2044 / Jobe (dirty on not understanding the free Captain option on that first round and to get GAJ!)
Players let me down: Rutten, Heppell, Zaharakis (sub), Crouch, Ryder, Currie, Zorko, Karnezis, Hurley, Lycett (salary cap problems!)

Any help from the SC experts out there on how I can improve my side?

I’m thinking of how to get a higher price mid (Swan?) and maybe lose Ryder (Jacobs is other Ruck starter) and move Cox from forwards to ruck? Problem is then who is a decent lower price forward? And then maybe lose Zaharakis to get in Swan?
My problems at the start were being a rookie, only signing up late before Essendon match and being a bomber fan (thus too many bombers in my side i think!!)

Any help / suggestions gratefully accepted!!

  9. You left you Joel wilkinson, scored a handy 68, he’s a bit more expensive but I think he’ll improve this year.
